Increasingly, designers need to present information in ways that aid their audience's thinking process. Fortunately, results from the relatively new science of human visual perception provide valuable guidance.
In Visual Thinking for Design, Colin Ware takes what we now know about perception, cognition, and attention and transforms it into concrete advice that designers can directly apply. He demonstrates how designs can be considered as tools for cognition - extensions of the viewer's brain in much the same way that a hammer is an extension of the user's hand.
Experienced professional designers and students alike will learn how to maximize the power of the information tools they design for the people who use them.
. Presents visual thinking as a complex process that can be supported in every stage using specific design techniques.
. Provides practical, task-oriented information for designers and software developers charged with design responsibilities.
. Includes hundreds of examples, many in the form of integrated text and full-color diagrams.
. Steeped in the principles of "active vision," which views graphic designs as cognitive tools.
About the Author
The author takes the "visual" in visualization very seriously. Colin Ware has advanced degrees in both computer science (MMath, Waterloo) and the psychology of perception (Ph.D., Toronto). He has published over a hundred articles in scientific and technical journals and at leading conferences, many of which relate to the use of color, texture, motion, and 3D in information visualization. In addition to his research, Professor Ware also builds useful visualization software systems. He has been involved in developing 3D interactive visualization systems for ocean mapping for over twelve years, and he directed the development of the NestedVision3D system for visualizing very large networks of information. Both of these projects led to commercial spin-offs. Professor. Ware recently moved from the University of New Brunswick in Canada to direct the Data Visualization Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire.

Windows XP is the latest version of Microsoft’s world-beating operating system. It is strongly biased towards the Internet. In fact Windows XP comes complete with all the navigation and communication tools required for the most effective use of the World Wide Web. This system marks a significant distinction, just as that between Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. The Windows 98/Me working platform may be retained for users who wish to continue using it, but the styles will be seized upon by those who wish to combine their PC operating methods with those of the Web facilities on offer.
Absolute beginners, or those who have just bought their first PC, do not need to know about the history of the software. They will be able to catch up with the Internet and enjoy the full benefits of all the new system features.
In fact, Windows XP has all the winning cards in terms of meeting consumer expectations; it contains all the features that made Windows 98/Me such a success. With Windows XP, computing is a real pleasure.

Welcome to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 PC For Dummies. What a mouthful! But each word is important, nay, critical! This book is about Microsoft’s next generation of operating system, Windows XP. But this is not an ordinary piece of software — Media Center 2004 is Microsoft’s major push to merge the computing and entertainment domains in your home. In other words, Microsoft is getting involved in something called convergence — where two previously separate worlds (computing and entertainment) become one.
But wait, there’s more — it’s not just about the software, because this software comes matched with purpose-built PC hardware platforms: souped-up, totallywired (and wireless), processor-rich computers that can drive your television and stereo as easily as they can download your e-mail.
This book tells you everything you want to know about these Media Center PCs. We’re truly on the verge of a new revolution in the home, in which the power of your stereo, home theater, TV, VCR, CD/DVD player, radio receiver, satellite/ cable receiver, and other entertainment devices are sucked into a powerful computing platform that can sit beside your TV.

Hey! I know you!
Well, I don’t know you personally, but I know the type of person you are. After all, I’m a trained observer and I’ve already observed a few things. First off, I observed that you’re the type of personwho likes to read a quality book. And, while you might appreciate a book about a dashing anthropology professor who discovers a mysterious code in the back of an ancient script that leads him on a globetrotting adventure that endangers his family and starts to topple the world’s secret power brokers, you’ve chosen to pick up a book called Handbook of Usability Testing, Second Edition. I’m betting you’re going to enjoy it just as much. (Sorry, there is no secret code hidden in these pages— that I’ve found — and I’ve read it four times so far.)
You’re also the type of person who wonders how frustrating and hard to use products become that way. I’m also betting that you’re a person who would really like to help your organization produce designs that delight its customers and users.
How do I know all these things? Because, well, I’m just like you; and I have been for almost 30 years. I conductedmyfirst usability test in 1981. Iwas testing one of the world’s first word processors, which my team had developed. We’d been working on the design for a while, growing increasingly uncomfortable with how complex it had become. Our fear was that we’d created a design that nobody would figure out.

There are a couple of reasons why SQL Server, the system that comprises Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services and Integration Services is the best choice for a broad spectrum of end users and database programmers building business applications:
SQL Server is certainly the best system for Windows operating systems, because of its tight integration (and low pricing). Because the number of installed Windows systems is enormous and still increasing rapidly, SQL Server is a widely used system.
Database Engine, as the relational database system component, is the easiest database system to use. In addition to the well-known user interface, Microsoft offers several different tools to help you create database objects, tune your database applications, and manage system administration tasks.
Generally, SQL Server isn’t only a database system. It is a platform that not only manages structured, semistructured, and unstructured data but also offers comprehensive, integrated operational and analysis software that enables organizations to reliably manage mission-critical information.

This book is primarily intended for first semester engineering students who are looking for an introduction to the MATLAB and Simulink environment oriented toward the knowledge and requirements of beginning students. Thus, only a few basic ideas from mathematics, in particular ordinary differential equations, programming, and physics are required to understand the contents of this book. This knowledge is usually acquired in the first two or three semesters of a technical engineering degree program.
Under these conditions, this book should also be of interest for practicing engineers who are looking for a brief introduction to MATLAB and Simulink. In the case of this book, engineers will have the knowledge required to understand it years after they have finished their studies.
The MathWorks periodically updates MATLAB and Simulink software. See Appendix C for information about R2007b, the release made in September, 2007. The examples in this book are compatible with the new version.
