“Bill’s original Cert Prep guides were used throughout Sun’s service organization as the SEs studied for Certification. This was not mandated by Sun management but happened through word-of-mouth by those software engineers who had successfully passed the exam. In this new edition, Bill adds a chapter to explain the boot process (from POST to service initialization through SMF) on both SPARC and x86 systems. All chapters have been updated to reflect the Solaris 05/08 updates including detailed coverage of the x86 platform. This new guide is still the best source I know of to study for the exam.  –Brian Howard, Systems Engineer / Solaris Ambassador

WRITTEN BY A LEADING SOLARIS EXPERT!

Bill Calkins is owner and president of Pyramid Consulting, a computer training and consulting firm specializing in the implementation and administration of open systems. The complexity of current computer control systems arises from the engineering requirement to integrate computers, actuators and sensors for control, signal processing and data networks, visualisation and display with the technology of the application domain. Further, real-time control systems, employing embedded and distributed computing, as compared with central supervisory computers, have the added difficulty of correct task computation to time deadlines and associated reliability specifications.

The breadth of the technologies involved, combined with the range of applications which encompasses aerospace, manufacturing, robotics, environmental, chemical production, electric power generation and economic systems, for example, presents difficulties in presenting the latest research developments. For this reason it has been decided to initiate a series of Special Issues in relevant journals, one of which appeared recently [ 1 ]. The four papers in this Special Issue are all concerned with the common theme of complex, real-time computer control.

Functional safety involves identifying specific hazardous failures which lead to serious consequences (e.g. death) and then establishing maximum tolerable frequency targets for each mode of failure. Equipment whose failure contributes to each of these hazards is identified and usually referred to as ‘safetyrelated’. Examples are industrial process control systems, process shutdown systems, rail signalling equipment, auto-motive controls, medical treatment equipment etc. In other words, any equipment (with or without software) whose failure can contribute to a hazard is likely to be safety-related.

Since the publication of the first edition of this book, in 2001, the application of IEC 61508 has spread rapidly through most sectors of industry. Also, the process sector IEC 61511 has been published. The opportunity has therefore been taken to update and enhance this book in the light of the authors’ recent experience. Chapter 5 is now devoted to IEC 61511 and Chapters 13 and 14 have been added to provide even more examples.

The idea and the scope for the book emerged from my own experience in attempting to acquire a good understanding of the rapidly evolving field of mobile and personal communication systems and standards, at a reasonable level of detail and breadth of coverage. Generally, one comes across either books that cover a range of technologies with very high-level descriptions suitable for a very broad, almost nontechnical audience, or books that address a specific technology or topic at a level of detail suitable only for a narrow audience of specialists. The book attempts to bridge this divide, with the text targeted at telecommunications professionals who are looking for a clear understanding of the basic technology, architecture, and applications associated with the current and future mobile communication systems, services, and standards. In terms of the depth and breadth of coverage, the book is therefore aimed to serve the following purposes and audiences as:

• a technical training text and guide for scientists, who expect to engage in planning and design of mobile and personal communication systems and networks for equipment vendors and network operators.
• a reference text for technical managers in areas of planning, engineering, and marketing of mobile and personal communication products and services.
• an introductory text for senior engineering and science students at the university and technical college level.

Thus, the primary objective of the book is to provide a systems engineering view of mobile and personal communication systems and services, and their evolution toward next-generation systems.

Real-time computer systems are very often subject to dependability requirements because of their application areas. Fly-by-wire airplane control systems, control of power plants, industrial process control systems and others are required to continue their function despite faults. Fault-tolerance and real-time requirements thus constitute a kind of natural combination in process control applications. Systematic fault-tolerance is based on redundancy, which is used to mask failures of individual components. The problem of replica determinism is thereby to ensure that replicated components show consistent behavior in the absence of faults. It might seem trivial that, given an identical sequence of inputs, replicated computer systems will produce consistent outputs. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The problem of replica non-determinism and the presentation of its possible solutions is the subject of Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems: The Problem of Replica Determinism.

The field of automotive electronics is an important application area of fault-tolerant real-time systems. Systems like anti-lock braking, engine control, active suspension or vehicle dynamics control have demanding real-time and fault-tolerance requirements. These requirements have to be met even in the presence of very limited resources since cost is extremely important. Because of its interesting properties Fault-Tolerant Real-Time Systems gives an introduction to the application area of automotive electronics. The requirements of automotive electronics are a topic of discussion in the remainder of this work and are used as a benchmark to evaluate solutions to the problem of replica determinism.

This book will introduce the reader to SOAP and serve as a comprehensive reference to both experienced and new developers in the area. Only one other book completely dedicated to SOAP is currently on the market, and it has strong sales because no other information is available. SE Using SOAP will capture more readers than the competition because it provides real-world examples and troubleshooting with complete data conversion information. The emphasis will be on getting started fast instead of reading through white paper-style theory in hopes of finding applicable information. By reading this book and working through the examples, the reader will be well versed in SOAP and its applications immediately. SE Using SOAP includes difficult to find information on how SOAP works with different languages and protocols including Visual Basic.NET, Visual Basic 6, C#, XML, HTTP, SDL, DISCO, COM, SQL Server, plus much more. Also covers how to work with PDAs, an ever-growing need in the data transfer market.

Ithink that running, or working in, a small business is one of the coolest things a person can do. Really. I mean it. Sure, sometimes the environment is dangerous. Kind of like the Old West. But it’s also an environment in which you have the opportunity to make tons of money. And it’s an environment in which you can build a company or a job that fits you. In comparison, many brothers and sisters working in big-company corporate America are furiously trying to fit their round pegs into painfully square holes. Yuck.

You’re wondering, of course, what any of this has to do with this book or with QuickBooks Simple Start. Quite a lot, actually. The whole purpose of this book is to make it easier for you to run or work in a small business by using QuickBooks.
