The revised edition of this book is designed with a greater emphasis on text and collocation, in keeping with recent trends in the world of English as a Foreign Language. It also incorporates the many changes to the revised proficiency examination from December 2002, such as word formation and multiple word meaning. The book is also intended for use at the level of CAE, and includes new exercises practising the formal/informal register transfer task.

Most of the practice sections in the Grammar and Vocabulary sections reflect such changes, and where texts are retained from the first edition, they have been given more of an exam focus.

However, the core of this highly successful book remains the same. The grammar section now includes some additional revision and more subtle advanced points. Units on phrasal verbs, prepositions and linking devices are also included. The grammatical information provided can be used for reference when needed, or worked through systematically.

The vocabulary section includes topic-based vocabulary, collocations and idiomatic phrases. It also recycles work on prepositions, and phrasal verbs.

The book can be used as a self-study reference grammar and practice book or as supplementary material in classes preparing for the CAE and Proficiency exams. If used for classwork, activities can be done individually or co-operatively in pairs or small groups.

There are regular consolidation units which include forms of testing commonly used in both exams and the material covers a range of difficulty appropriate to both exams.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of open-source developers, Cocoon has quickly gained visibility as the preeminent XML-based Web publishing framework. Unfortunately, its documentation remains a significant shortcoming. If you’re new to Cocoon, gaining a sense of exactly what you can do with it can be difficult, and actually getting started can be even harder.

Cocoon 2 Programming: Web Publishing with XML and Java clearly explains the value of Cocoon and helps you build on your familiarity with XML and Java Servlets as you design, build, and implement a range of Cocoon applications. You’ll begin by learning to control presentation for various platforms, both wired and wireless. Then you’ll move on to Cocoon’s capabilities for logic control and content management, using both sitemaps and XSP to create a site dynamically generated from a variety of data sources and types.

As you’ll see, Cocoon also supports powerful organizing techniques known as design patterns, and you’ll master their use in both presentation and content generation. These are essential tools for the planning of your site; for after it’s implemented, you’ll command powerful techniques for site management and optimization.

The Web’s dependence on XML is growing rapidly—and with it the list of companies that have adopted Cocoon. Is Cocoon for you? Cocoon 2 Programming will guide you through your decision and far beyond, providing all the assistance you need to build a dynamic, XML-based site—and keep moving into the future.

The world's first photograph was taken in 1826 using a pinhole camera, known as camera obscura. The camera obscura, the basic projection model of pinhole cameras, was already known in China more than 2500 years ago. Cameras used since this first photograph are basically following the pinhole camera principle. The quality of projected images improved due to progress in optical lenses and silver-based film, the latter one replaced today by digital technologies. Pinhole-type cameras are still the dominating brands and are also used in computer vision for understanding 3D scenes based on captured images or videos. However, different applications have pushed for designing alternative architectures of cameras. For example, in photogrammetry, cameras are installed in planes or satellites, and a continuing stream of image data can also be created by capturing images just line by line, one line at a time. As a second example, robots are required to understand scenery in full 360 degrees to be able to react to obstacles or events; a camera looking upward into a parabolic or hyperbolic mirror allows this type of omnidirectional viewing. The development of alternative camera architectures results in a need to understand related projective geometries for the purpose of camera calibration, binocular stereo, static or dynamic scene understanding. Written by leading researchers in the field, this book elucidates on these topics as well as some of the applications of alternative camera architectures.
