With the Fedora Linux operating system and the instructions in this book, you can transform your PC into a safe, powerful, and free computer system. Starting with Fedora, you can simply replace (or coexist with) Microsoft Windows on your everyday desktop computer. You can also configure your computer to share your files, printers, Web pages, or directory services to other computers. Then, if you choose, you can transition your skills to manage anything from a small office to a large, corporate Red Hat Enterprise Linux computer installation.

This book tells you how and gives you the software to do it.

You don’t need to be a programmer to use this book. You may be someone who just wants to use Linux (to run programs, access the Internet, and so on). Or you may simply want to know how to administer a Linux system in a workgroup or on a network.

I assume that you are somewhat computer literate but have little or no experience with Linux (or UNIX). You may be migrating from Microsoft operating systems to Linux because of its networking and multiuser features. You may be looking to start a career as a computer technician or network administrator and find that spending a few dollars for an entire operating system and book is more economical than taking those technical classes offered on late-night television. Or you might just think a “free” operating system is cool.

In any case, after you peruse this book you should have a good idea of how to run applications, set up a small network, connect to the Internet, and configure a variety of server types (Web servers, print servers, file servers, and so on). This book represents a great first few steps toward your becoming someone who can set up a home network or a small office network and maintain a group of computers.

This IBM Redbook considers an enterprise and describes some of the procedures and documentation that need to be developed to secure WebSphere MQ on the z/OS (zSeries), OS/400 (iSeries), IBM AIX (pSeries) and Windows 2000 (xSeries) platforms. This Redbook also documents the before and after configurations needed to take advantage of the recent functional improvements to WebSphere MQ, such as the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).

Security is a complex subject. The first part of this Redbook is intended to help the reader understand it. The second part lays out a business case scenario where the technology is implemented to secure WebSphere MQ.

The book incorporates:

  • Cross-platform security, ascertaining the responsibility of identification and authentication.
  • Security issues when using WebSphere MQ over the Internet.
  • Securing of messages, taking advantage of the functional improvements to WebSphere MQ such as PKI and SSL.
  • Maintenance of message integrity by means of authentication and encryption.
  • Use of technologies external to WebSphere MQ, such as PKI, DCE, and RACF to solve the security concerns.

The appendixes provide additional information, scripts, sample code and JCL related to the chapters in the book.

Programming Microsoft Visual C# 2008: The Language is for developers seeking a comprehensive explanation of Visual C# 2008 or who want to explore a specific aspect of the language. The chapters are sequenced to provide a rational and complete review of the language. Each chapter also is reviewable as an independent unit that encapsulates a specific topic.

This book targets both professional and casual developers. Readers should have a basic understanding of programming concepts and object oriented programming. There is no other expectation. Practical and in-depth explanations are provided. Where beneficial, sample code is provided to complement explanations. Sample code often provides the clearest explanation of in-depth concepts. For this reason, this book contains a large number of code examples.

It's hard to remember a world without the Internet. We now take for granted that we can access our bank accounts and health records, get driving directions, talk to friends, and shop, all on the Internet. Many companies couldn't survive without it because it is their link to their customers.

But the Internet doesn't just give businesses access to customers, doctors access to health records, and friends access to each other, it also gives attackers access to your system and to the systems you want to reach.

The systems were built in a much more innocent time, which assumed a collegial environment for honest researchers to share information, or a single-user, home machine used for word processing or playing games. The Internet, along with the idea of people attacking systems for fun or to make a political point, developed so quickly that the systems have not had time to evolve into the completely hardened systems they need to be. In the meantime, it is a constant struggle to try to stay ahead of the attackers.

It would be easy to give up, declare the situation hopeless, and move to Vermont to raise rabbits. But just when dealing with thousands of rabbits starts sounding like the easy way out, along comes Ed Skoudis, with his boundless energy, enthusiasm, and optimism.

Ed is a rare individual. He knows the innards of all the various systems, as well as all the latest exploits and defenses, and yet he is able to explain everything at just the right level. The first edition of Counter Hack was a fascinating read. It's technically intriguing and very clear. It's also, of course, scary, but Ed's basic optimism shines through and is somehow reassuring and empowering.

A book on vulnerabilities will get out of date, though, and so we definitely needed this updated and significantly rewritten second edition. This book is a wonderful overview of the field. (For those wanting to do a deep dive into the details of malicious code, I strongly recommend Ed's other book, Malware [Prentice Hall, 2004].)

Unfortunately, the battle for understanding and defending against exploits is not ever going to be won. As the Red Queen said in Through the Looking Glass, "Now here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place." That's such a discouraging thought, but at least Counter Hack Reloaded will make us enjoy learning what we need to know to do our best.

"This book's broad overview can help an organization choose a set of processes, policies, and techniques that are appropriate for its security maturity, risk tolerance, and development style. This book will help you understand how to incorporate practical security techniques into all phases of the development lifecycle."

—Steve Riley, senior security strategist, Microsoft Corporation

"There are books written on some of the topics addressed in this book, and there are other books on secure systems engineering. Few address the entire life cycle with a comprehensive overview and discussion of emerging trends and topics as well as this one."

—Ronda Henning, senior scientist-software/security queen, Harris Corporation

Software that is developed from the beginning with security in mind will resist, tolerate, and recover from attacks more effectively than would otherwise be possible. While there may be no silver bullet for security, there are practices that project managers will find beneficial. With this management guide, you can select from a number of sound practices likely to increase the security and dependability of your software, both during its development and subsequently in its operation.

Software Security Engineering draws extensively on the systematic approach developed for the Build Security In (BSI) Web site. Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security Software Assurance Program, the BSI site offers a host of tools, guidelines, rules, principles, and other resources to help project managers address security issues in every phase of the software development life cycle (SDLC). The book's expert authors, themselves frequent contributors to the BSI site, represent two well-known resources in the security world: the CERT Program at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and Cigital, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in software security.

This book will help you understand why

  • Software security is about more than just eliminating vulnerabilities and conducting penetration tests

  • Network security mechanisms and IT infrastructure security services do not sufficiently protect application software from security risks

  • Software security initiatives should follow a risk-management approach to identify priorities and to define what is "good enough"—understanding that software security risks will change throughout the SDLC

  • Project managers and software engineers need to learn to think like an attacker in order to address the range of functions that software should not do, and how software can better resist, tolerate, and recover when under attack

In an effort to make the field of robotics accessible to a larger group of developers, Microsoft has released Microsoft Robotics Studio (MSRS). MSRS is based on the popular .NET Framework. It offers developers a standard and consistent way to develop applications for an almost limitless variety of robotic platforms. Currently, version 1.5 of MSRS is available for download from the MSRS Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/robotics).

MSRS, along with four affordable and easy-to-work-with robots, will be featured in this book. The robots used in this book include the following:

  • Boe-Bot by Parallax This three-wheeled robot is small, but it offers valuable experience for those new to electronic kits. In addition to the Boe-Bot kit, readers wanting to use this robot will need to purchase the eb500 Bluetooth module. The configuration steps required make the Boe-Bot the most time-consuming robot to assemble and configure.

  • Create by iRobot This pre-assembled robot was built with developers in mind. It is based on the highly popular Roomba vacuum, but this model does not vacuum floors. Instead, you have the convenience of a pre-assembled and sturdy robot. Additionally, the payload capacity and expandability of this robot allows it to be used for several useful purposes.

  • Mindstorms NXT by LEGO This surprisingly sturdy and useful robot is small, expandable, and easy to work with. The robot comes with five sensors, which can be easily attached to the base. Even though the robot is made with small LEGO bricks, this is not to be confused with a child's toy.

  • ARobot by Arrick Robotics This three-wheeled robot features a large metal chassis, which makes it easy to expand. The robot was included as a means of demonstrating how new hardware can be supported (this is done in Chapter 7). In chapter 8, the ARobot is expanded to include an onboard laptop, which allows it to capture images using a USB Web camera.

One of the things that make this book particularly special is that all the chapters were reviewed by members of the MSRS product group team. The reviews were meant to ensure content accuracy, and, thus, I feel confident that the material covered is beneficial to the reader.

This book makes the assumption that the reader has no prior knowledge of computing. It uses everyday language and tries to describe procedures and terms in the simplest way possible. The emphasis is on action and success without wasting time in long technical explanations or terms. Each section is divided up into separate sections that contain essential information about each topic. These are followed by a series of actions designed to lead to successful use of computer applications. These easy steps introduce and develop some of the most useful areas of the computer, including using the Internet and e-mail. It also covers the basic word processing elements common to Office 97, Office 2000 and Works 2000. We have included a Jargon Buster at the back of the book to explain any unfamiliar terms.

People who are busy, with little patience, or who simply cannot face anything more technical than a pencil sharpener, will find that this book helps them key into one of the world’s most widely-used pieces of technology.

At the height of its power in the summer of 1942, Hitlerite Germany had enslaved four hundred million people; its empire stretched from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, from the English Channel to the Black Sea and almost to the Caspian. Between the Ukrainian steppes and the Pyrenees only Switzerland remained free. Even Mussolini, whom Hitler once called “the leading statesman in the world,” 1 had been reduced to a pathetic pawn. Far from the turmoil in Europe, Hitler’s U–boats were carrying the Nazi offensive to the New World, engaging enemy forces off the Atlantic coast of North America and in the Caribbean Sea.

The enormity of Hitler’s ambitions and Nazi brutality had by this time provoked the formation of a global counter-coalition solely aimed at defeating Germany and its Axis partners. All that was asked of any available ally was that it should share faithfully this one major purpose. Among the members of the Allied coalition, however, only the Soviet Union, which had already suffered serious losses the year before, was actively fighting German land forces in Europe. And unlike in 1941, when the Wehrmacht had stalled in the snow outside Moscow and Leningrad, the renewed German offensive of 1942 had carried the spearheads of Hitler’s panzer armies to Stalingrad and deep into the Caucasus, where they threatened Russia’s richest oil fields and, by extension, the Red Army’s ability to continue the struggle against Germany.

Developments in cognitive science indicate that human and nonhuman primates share a range of behavioral and physiological characteristics that speak to the issue of language origins. This volume has three major themes, woven throughout the chapters. First, it is argued that scientists in animal behavior and anthropology need to move beyond theoretical debate to a more empirically focused and comparative approach to language. Second, those empirical and comparative methods are described, revealing underpinnings of language, some of which are shared by humans and other primates and others of which are unique to humans. New insights are discussed, and several hypotheses emerge concerning the evolutionary forces that led to the "design" of language. Third, evolutionary challenges that led to adaptive changes in communication over time are considered with an eye toward understanding various constraints that channeled the process.

This book is for people who want to learn about diverse energy sources and technologies without taking a formal course. It can serve as a classroom supplement, tutorial aid, self-teaching guide, or home-schooling text.

As you take this course, you’ll encounter multiple-choice quizzes and a fi nal exam to help you measure your progress. All quiz and exam questions are composed like those in standardized tests. The quizzes are “open-book.” You may refer to the chapter text when taking them. The fi nal exam contains questions drawn uniformly from all the chapters. It is a “closed-book” test. Don’t look back at the text when taking it. Answers to all quiz and exam questions are listed at the back of the book.

You don’t need a mathematical or scientifi c background for this course. Middleschool algebra, geometry, and physics will suffi ce. I recommend that you complete one chapter a week. That way, in a few months, you’ll fi nish the course. You can then use this book, with its comprehensive index, as a permanent reference.

This book offers ideas for consumers, experimenters, and hobbyists, as well as outlining the technical basics of energy generation, transport, and utilization.

However, this is not a design guide! If you want to install, modify, upgrade, or use any of the systems discussed here, consult the appropriate professionals, and adhere to all applicable laws, codes, and insurance requirements.

This is an entry-level science nonfi ction book for students and lay people. It is not intended to promote or condemn any particular energy source, ideology, agenda, or economic interest. I have done my best to objectively present the advantages and limitations of various technologies from conventional to exotic. I invite input from innovators, producers, and distributors concerning developments for possible inclusion in future editions.

After decades of research activity, Chinese spoken language processing (CSLP) has advanced considerably both in practical technology and theoretical discovery. In this book, the editors provide both an introduction to the field as well as unique research problems with their solutions in various areas of CSLP. The contributions represent pioneering efforts ranging from CSLP principles to technologies and applications, with each chapter encapsulating a single problem and its solutions.

It is generally agreed that speech will play a major role in defining next-generation human-machine interfaces because it is the most natural means of communication among humans. To push forward this vision, speech research has enjoyed a long and glorious history spanning the entire twentieth century. As a result in the last three decades we have witnessed an intensive technology progress spurred on by recent advances in speech modeling, coordinated efforts between government funding agencies and speech communities for data collection and benchmark performance evaluation, and easy accesses to fast and affordable computing machineries. In the context of spoken language processing, we consider a collection of technical topics ranging over all aspects of speech communication, including production, perception, recognition, verification, synthesis, coding, analysis, and modeling. We have also seen quite a few spoken language system concepts moving out of research laboratories, and being deployed into real-life services and applications.
