"This energetic and informative book tackles head-on the knotty issue of what ADHD in adults really means. It includes helpful answers to such vital problems as what modifications to diagnostic criteria are appropriate, and what are the inferential biases to which clinicians are prone when seeing self-referred cases in their offices. This is the most definitive work to date on the difficult task of generalizing from children with ADHD to adults with ADHD. The authors break new ground in addressing these issues with comprehensive data from their own well-regarded samples. This timely book thus provides a fresh and needed perspective to help resolve longstanding difficulties in understanding ADHD in adults. It will be helpful to DSM-V committee deliberations and to those planning future scientific studies, as well as to clinicians needing a clearer picture of what to expect in adults with ADHD."--Joel T. Nigg, PhD, Department of Psychology, Michigan State University

"A veritable tour de force. This work will be equally useful to researchers seeking innovative hypotheses about ADHD, to clinicians seeking to understand the course of ADHD into adulthood, and to students at all levels of training. Readers have access to a unified and systematic view of the results from two notable, methodologically rigorous research studies. The book addresses a wide range of clinically urgent issues, such as psychiatric comorbidity, drug use, life impairments, educational attainment, and neuropsychological impairment. The discussions of diagnostic criteria not only provide clinically useful information for adult assessment, but also should strongly influence the evolution of the DSM-V."--Stephen V. Faraone, PhD, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Director, Medical Genetics Research; and Director, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Research, SUNY Upstate Medical University

"The single best source of scientific information on adult ADHD available to date. The results of two major research investigations are thoroughly reviewed to explicate important similarities and differences between children with ADHD followed into adulthood and individuals first referred for ADHD symptoms as adults. This is the first text to make this important and clinically relevant distinction. It is sure to be an indispensable resource for both clinicians and researchers. In addition, graduate students in clinical psychology, counseling, social work, and school psychology will find this text helpful both for the data it provides about adult ADHD and for its insights into how to establish a coherent research agenda."--George J. DuPaul, PhD, Department of Education and Human Services, Lehigh University

It was to be a structure like no other - the largest and tallest skyscraper in the world. Initial plans for the Empire State Building called for an Art Deco masterwork to rise 1,000 feet, with 80 stories of rental space. The high-rise was to completely fill the 84,000-square-foot site of the former Waldorf-Astoria, then New York's most opulent hotel. The Empire State Building would, hopefully, accelerate Midtown's stride toward commercial prominence, pulling more business uptown. Built in the early years of the Great Depression, during which one out of four New Yorkers was out of work, the Empire State Building's construction was thought by many to be a foolish undertaking. Yet, it was completed under budget and ahead of schedule, and the new commercial colossus would stand to see a new day dawning - for New York, for America, and for the world.

The fascinating story of the most powerful source of energy the earth can yield

Uranium is a common element in the earth’s crust and the only naturally occurring mineral with the power to end all life on the planet. After World War II, it reshaped the global order—whoever could master uranium could master the world.

Marie Curie gave us hope that uranium would be a miracle panacea, but the Manhattan Project gave us reason to believe that civilization would end with apocalypse. Slave labor camps in Africa and Eastern Europe were built around mine shafts and America would knowingly send more than six hundred uranium miners to their graves in the name of national security.

Fortunes have been made from this yellow dirt; massive energy grids have been run from it. Fear of it panicked the American people into supporting a questionable war with Iraq and its specter threatens to create another conflict in Iran. Now, some are hoping it can help avoid a global warming catastrophe.

In Uranium, Tom Zoellner takes readers around the globe in this intriguing look at the mineral that can sustain life or destroy it.

In "Unsolved Crimes", famous, unresolved cases from the past 120 years are examined to review what police and experts in forensic science did (or failed to do) while trying to resolve each crime. For each case covered, the key theories and suspects are described. Though technology is much improved since the time of Jack the Ripper in 1888, some recent crimes defy the best equipment and best scientists, leaving open-ended mysteries to occupy the minds of amateur sleuths everywhere. Still, it may not be too late to solve these riddles. By reexamining old evidence with modern techniques, police can often breathe new life into a cold case. This book includes such chapters as: Red Jack; The Black Dahlia; The Boy in the Box; JFK: Case Closed?; and, Deadly Medicine. Cases covered include: Jack the Ripper, unidentified serial killer; the murder of Elizabeth Short, aka 'The Black Dahlia'; the assassination of John F. Kennedy, officially solved but often disputed; the disappearance of Teamsters' leader Jimmy Hoffa; the Tylenol poisoning murders and related cases; Lizzie Borden, accused then acquitted of murdering her parents with an axe; Harry and Harriette Moore, murdered during the early days of the Civil Rights movement; and, the murder of JonBenet Ramsey.

The primary objective of this book is to disseminate information on the latest concepts, techniques, and design data to structural engineers engaged in the design of wind- and seismic-resistant buildings. Integral to the book are recent advances in seismic design, particularly those related to buildings in zones of low and moderate seismicity. These stipulations, reflected in the latest provisions of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7-02, International Building Code (IBC)-03, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 5000, are likely to be adopted as a design standard by local code agencies. There now exists the unprecedented possibility of a single standard becoming a basis for earthquake-resistant design virtually in the entire United States, as well as in other nations that base their codes on U.S. practices. By incorporating these and the latest provisions of American Concrete Institute (ACI) 318-02, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) 341-02, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 356 and 350 series, this book equips designers with up-to-date information to execute safe designs, in accordance with the latest regulations.

'Structure and Architecture' is an essential textbook for students and practitioners of architecture and structural engineering. MacDonald explains the basic principles of structure and describes the ranges of structure types in current use. Furthermore, the book links these topics directly with the activity of architectural design and criticism. An update of the first edition, 'Structure and Architecture 2ed' includes a revised opening chapter, and a new section that discusses prominent buildings constructed since the last edition was published in 1994.

Angus MacDonald deals with structures holistically, relating detailed topics back to the whole structure and building. He aims to answer the questions: What are architectural structures? How does one define the difference between the structure of a building and all of the other components and elements of which it consists? What are the requirements of structures? What is involved in their design? An understanding of the concepts involved in answering these questions and an appreciation of how the structure of a building functions enhances the ability of an individual to appreciate its architectural quality. This book is unique in that it discusses the structural component of architectural design in the context of visual and stylistic issues.

Enables the reader to develop an understanding of how architectural structures function
Allows students to acquire a vocabulary covering the entire range of structure types and their appropriate use
Generously illustrated with many examples taken from contemporary buildings giving tips on how to evaluate architectural structures

Our daily lives are filled with little sayings and habits that we don't think much about. Many of them have their roots in history and were passed down from our ancestors, and though the reasons for them have often been forgotten, they linger still. Have you ever wondered:
- Why is there a best man at weddings and why are brides carried over the threshold?
- Why is an eager person "gung ho" and a coward "yellow"?
- Why is football played on a "gridiron" and a leg injury called a "charley horse"?
- Why do the British drive on the left and North Americans on the right?

The answers to these questions and the origins of hundreds of other expressions and customs are brought together in this fascinating collection based on the nationally-syndicated radio feature "Now You Know," which reaches a daily audience of over a million Canadians. With all the conciseness of the original radio scripts, Doug Lennox tells you the things you always wanted to know.

About the Author

Dougn Lennox is best known through his 35 years as a freelance writer, producer, and host in Canadian radio and television. His work at the CBC with such legends as Anne Murray, Sylvia Tyson, Oscar Peterson, Anton Kuerti and Ronnie Hawkins, among a host of others, has won him acclaim and international recognition. As an actor, he has been featured in many movies and television dramas, including X-Men, The Herd, Nero Wolfe, Odyssey 5, and Against the Ropes.

SharePoint Designer is Microsoft’s premier offering for Web designers, information workers, and business users to be able to interactively design collaborative SharePoint-based Web applications. It has its roots in FrontPage technologies and is considered the product of choice for users who want to work specifically on SharePoint Web applications.

This book tries to align its content to the development life cycle of a Web site or application. From the initial decisions about the server technologies to be used for Web site development to the actual Web application design and implementation and finally to the Web site maintenance and housekeeping, all facets of SharePoint Designer are covered in simple and easy-to-follow chapters. This book strives to introduce readers to most of the server-side aspects of SharePoint Designer. Because SharePoint Designer relies on a number of server technologies, such as Internet Information Services (IIS), FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE), and SharePoint, a substantial portion of this book is devoted to helping develop understanding on how these technologies work individually and in relation to SharePoint Designer. Before the book starts to explore the SharePoint Designer functionality, it offers insight into the server products that SharePoint Designer can interact with.

Throughout the book, you find notes and tips about features provided by the server technologies that SharePoint Designer either relies on or interacts with. Overall, one of the intentions of this book is to simplify understanding of SharePoint Designer’s interaction with the server technologies to help troubleshoot common issues with remote authoring and publishing.

I joined an e-commerce company in 2000, nothing unusual I suppose. We were quite annoyed by the quality of Amazon’s search engine results compared to ours. A few years later, we reimplemented our search engine from scratch using Lucene. That’s where I learned that a good search engine is 50% kick-ass technology and 50% deep understanding of the business and the users you serve. Then I sailed different seas and joined the Hibernate team and, later on, JBoss Inc.

It must be Destiny that a few years later I worked on unifying Hibernate and Lucene. Hibernate Search’s design has been influenced by the work on Java Persistence and JBoss Seam: ease of use, domain model-centric, annotation-driven and focused on providing a unified experience to the developer. Hibernate Search brings full-text search to Hibernate application without programmatic shift or infrastructural code.

Search is now a key component of our digital life (Google, Spotlight, Amazon, Facebook). Virtually every website, every application, has to provide a human-friendly, word-centric search. While Google addresses the internet, Spotlight searches your desktop files, Amazon focuses on products, and Facebook finds people. I firmly believe Lucene’s flexibility is a key differentiator for developers building business-centric search engines. This has also influenced the design on Hibernate Search: While Hibernate Search relieves you of the burdens of indexing and retrieving objects, we made sure that all the flexibility of Lucene is accessible to you, especially when you build queries.

'The publication of every new volume in The Dolciani Mathematical Expositions of the Mathematical Association of America is an important event ... This book is recommended to teachers, students and everyone, who enjoy the fun and games of problem solving and have the opinion that asking and answering problems is what keeps a mathematician young in spirit.' Acta. Sci. Math.

Ross Honsberger's love of mathematics comes through very clearly in From Erdös to Kiev. He presents intriguing, stimulating problems that can be solved with elementary mathematical techniques. It will give pleasure to motivated students and their teachers, but it will also appeal to anyone who enjoys a mathematical challenge. Most of the problems in the collection have appeared on national or international Olympiads or other contests. Thus, they are quite challenging (with solutions that are all the more rewarding). The solutions use straightforward arguments from elementary mathematics (often not very technical arguments) with only the occasional foray into sophisticated or advanced ideas. Anyone familiar with elementary mathematics can appreciate a large part of the book. The problems included in this collection are taken from geometry, number theory, probability, and combinatorics. Solutions to the problems are included.

How to solve security issues and problems arising in distributed systems.

Security is one of the leading concerns in developing dependable distributed systems of today, since the integration of different components in a distributed manner creates new security problems and issues. Service oriented architectures, the Web, grid computing and virtualization – form the backbone of today’s distributed systems. A lens to security issues in distributed systems is best provided via deeper exploration of security concerns and solutions in these technologies.

Distributed Systems Security provides a holistic insight into current security issues, processes, and solutions, and maps out future directions in the context of today’s distributed systems.  This insight is elucidated by modeling of modern day distributed systems using a four-tier logical model –host layer, infrastructure layer, application layer, and service layer (bottom to top). The authors provide an in-depth coverage of security threats and issues across these tiers. Additionally the authors describe the approaches required for efficient security engineering, alongside exploring how existing solutions can be leveraged or enhanced to proactively meet the dynamic needs of security for the next-generation distributed systems. The practical issues thereof are reinforced via practical case studies.

Distributed Systems Security:

  • Presents an overview of distributed systems security issues, including threats, trends, standards and solutions.
  • Discusses threats and vulnerabilities in different layers namely the host, infrastructure, application, and service layer to provide a holistic and practical, contemporary view of enterprise architectures.
  • Provides practical insights into developing current-day distributed systems security using realistic case studies.

This book will be of invaluable interest to software engineers, developers, network professionals and technical/enterprise architects working in the field of distributed systems security. Managers and CIOs, researchers and advanced students will also find this book insightful.

MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

"The present book gives a concise treatment of the area, aiming to show the relevance in particular of new developments in nonsmooth analysis to optimization theory…The book is of a manageable size and as such should appeal to the student. Further, the proofs are generally short and snappy, revealing the power of the abstract structural approach and fruitful interplay of geometrical and topological ideas. However, considerable ground is covered and, as a graduate text should, it develops the subject up to the frontiers of current research, giving an idea of areas for further exploration…This text will give impetus to the teaching of analysis because it makes evident its significant applications in optimization. But it will also bring added attraction to the study of optimization because it reveals so much of its abstract structural base."

"The book is divided into 11 chapters and provides a comprehensive presentation of the main features of convex analysis and nonlinear optimisation. Each result is sustained by a set of theorems, propositions and corollaries and includes rigorous proofs and clarifying discussions. They are complemented by a series of theoretical exercises. … This book is warmly recommended for an advanced course in analysis for mathematicians or as a first graduate course for students involved with optimization theory." (Carlos Narciso Bouza Herrera, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1116 (18), 2007)

This book is a concise account of convex analysis, its applications and extensions, for a broad audience. Blurring as it does the distinctions between mathematical optimization and modern analysis, the elegant language of convexity and duality is indispensible both in computational optimization and for understanding variational properties of functions and multifunctions. Primarily aimed at first-year graduate students, the text consists of short, self-contained sections, each followed by an extensive set of exercises, many of which are guided. The book is thus appropriate either as a class text or for self-study.

The purpose of writing this book is to produce a text suitable for students in Further and/or Higher Education who are required to learn how to use the CAD software package AutoCAD® 2009. Students taking examinations based on computer-aided design will fi nd the contents of the book of great assistance. The book is also suitable for those in industry wishing to learn how to construct technical drawings with the aid of AutoCAD 2009 and those who, having used previous releases of AutoCAD, wish to update their skills to AutoCAD 2009.

The contents of this book are basically a graded course of work, consisting of chapters giving explanations and examples of methods of constructions, followed by exercises which allow the reader to practise what has been learned in each chapter. The fi rst 11 chapters are concerned with constructing technical drawing in two dimensions. These are followed by chapters detailing the construction of three-dimensional (3D) solid drawings and rendering them. The two fi nal chapters describe the Internet tools of AutoCAD 2009 and the place of AutoCAD in the design process. The book fi nishes with three appendices: printing and plotting; a list of tools with their abbreviations; and a list of some of the set variables upon which AutoCAD 2009 is based.

AutoCAD 2009 is very complex computer-aided design (CAD) software package. A book of this size cannot possibly cover the complexities of all the methods for constructing 2D and 3D drawings available when working with AutoCAD 2009. However, it is hoped that by the time the reader has worked through the contents of the book, he/she will be suffi ciently skilled in methods of producing drawing with the software to be able to go on to more advanced constructions with its use and will have gained an interest in the more advanced possibilities available when using AutoCAD.

Since you’re reading this, I’m guessing you have made an exciting decision: You want a telescope. Specifically, you want a telescope for looking at the sky, a telescope that will open the depths of space to your gaze and allow you to visit the Moon, the planets, and all the strange and distant wonders of our magnificent universe. And you are not looking for just any telescope, either, but for a Schmidt Cassegrain telescope (SCT), whose full-color advertisements fill the pages of astronomy magazines.

In our consumer culture, most of us have become wary of high-pressure ads from manufacturers who promise the Moon and deliver little. Luckily, that is not the case when it comes to SCTs. Sometimes, the advertising does contain hyperbole, but Schmidt Cassegrains really can deliver the Moon—and the stars, too.

SCTs, like anything else, are not perfect, but when all is said and done, the Schmidt Cassegrain may be the most versatile, technologically advanced, and easy-to-use telescope ever sold to amateur astronomers. Since SCTs were first offered at prices the average person could afford way back in 1970, they have dominated the amateur astronomy telescope market. Don’t believe that? Take a stroll around the observing field of a local astronomy club during the next star party. Chances are a majority of the telescopes there will be SCTs. Fancy advertisements alone simply could not account for the enduring popularity of Schmidt Cassegrains. Something good is going on.

An engaging and accessible introduction to Christianity’s relationship with other world religions, addressing the questions of why the reality, and vitality, of other religions has become a challenge, and showing how Christianity is equipped to deal with religious plurality at both the doctrinal and social level.

    • Timely and accessible, this book tackles the question of why the reality, and vitality, of other religions has become a challenge for Christianity
    • Makes a decisive contribution to debates about the clash between Islam and the West, arguing that the major threat to religious freedoms come from secularism, and that Islam and Christianity both have the resources to develop a vibrant and pluralist public square; one informed by intellectual rigor and debate
    • Considers the wider issue of how modernity has defined ‘religion’, and provides a substantial critique of secular ways of controlling religions
    • Shows how Christianity is very well suited to deal with religious plurality at the doctrinal and social level
    • Addresses the core issues and describes the various answers that have been proposed in recent years – making it an ideal introduction to the field, and one which will stimulate ideas and discussions
Why has the reality of other religions become a big problem for Christianity? In the past, Christianity has been able to largely ignore other religions but in recent decades, not just the reality, but the vitality of other religions has become a challenge. This accessible book tackles a number of questions arising from these changes: is belonging to one religion rather than another merely a matter of cultural preference?; is salvation the same among all religions?; and what can be learned from other religions? Considering wider issues of how modernity has defined “religion,” Gavin D’Costa provides a substantial critique of secular ways of controlling religions, and shows how Christianity is very well suited to deal with religious plurality at the doctrinal and social level.

The book makes a decisive contribution to debates about the clash between Islam and the West, arguing that the major threat to religious freedoms come from secularism, and that Islam and Christianity both have the resources to develop a vibrant and pluralist “public square” informed by intellectual debate. By engaging with the core questions and suggesting a pathway through the various answers that have been proposed in recent years, this is an ideal introduction to the field, and one which will help stimulate ideas and discussions.

    About the Author

Gavin D’Costa is Professor of Christian Theology at Bristol University. He also works with the Church of England and Roman Catholic Committees on Other Faiths, and the Pontifical Council for Other Faiths, Vatican City, advising these communities on theological issues. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Theology and the Public Square (Wiley-Blackwell, 2005), Sexing the Trinity (2000), and The Meeting of Religions and the Trinity (2000).

Welcome to the world of Transact - Structured Query Language programming with SQL Server 2005 and 2008. Transact - SQL, or T - SQL, is Microsoft Corporation ’ s powerful implementation of the ANSI standard SQL database query language, which was designed to retrieve, manipulate, and add data to relational database management systems (RDBMS).

You may already have a basic idea of what SQL is used for, but you may not have a good understanding of the concepts behind relational databases and the purpose of SQL. This book will help you build a solid foundation of understanding, beginning with core relational database concepts and continuing to reinforce those concepts with real - world T - SQL query applications.

If you are familiar with relational database concepts but are new to Microsoft SQL Server or the T - SQL language, this book will teach you the basics from the ground up. If you ’ re familiar with earlier versions of SQL Server, it will get you up to speed on the newest features. And if you know SQL Server 2005, you ’ ll learn about some exciting new capabilities in SQL Server 2008.

A popular online encyclopedia lists about 800 distinct programming languages in use today. These languages are used to develop different types of applications for different types of computer systems and specialized devices. Needless to say, we have a lot of software in our information - rich society. Programming languages rapidly evolve and come and go, but one of few constants in the industry is that most business applications read, store, and manipulate data — data stored in relational databases. If you use Microsoft SQL Server in any capacity, the need to learn and use T - SQL is inescapable. Amazing things are possible with just a few keystrokes of powerful SQL script.

Indeed, SQL is one of the few standard languages in the industry that doesn ’ t come and go and has remained constant over the decades. The capabilities of T - SQL expand as features are added to each version of the SQL Server product. The concepts and exercises in this book will help you to understand and use the core language and its latest features.

“Physicist and Ig Nobel Prize–winner Fisher explores how game theory illuminates social behavior in this lively study…. Fisher does succeed in making the complex nature of game theory accessible and relevant, showing how mathematics applies to the dilemmas we face on a daily basis.”

A FRIEND CALLED ME RECENTLY with the news that a group of scientists had just published a study on how teaspoons gradually disappear from the communal areas of offices. “Game theory!” he screamed triumphantly. I thanked him profusely, and added yet another example to my already thick file.

Game theory is all around us. Despite its name, it is not just about games—it is about the strategies that we use every day in our interactions with other people. My friends have been sending me examples from newspaper stories and their own personal experience ever since I announced my intention to write a book about it. I wanted to find out whether its surprising new insights could help us develop fresh strategies for cooperation, and to try them out for myself in environments that ranged from the polite confines of an English dinner party to baseball games, crowded sidewalks, shopping centers, congested Indian roads, and Australian outback pubs.

This book presents in a single volume the basic essentials of the properties and processing behaviour of plastics and composites. The aim is to give engineers and technologists a sound understanding of basic principles without the introduction of unduly complex levels of mathematics or chemistry and thereby set plastics in their proper context as engineering materials.

This textbook pioneered the approach whereby both properties and processing of reinforced and unreinforced plastics are covered in a single volume. It assumes no prior knowledge of plastics, and emphasizes the practical aspects of the subject. In this third edition, over half the book has been re-written and the remainder has been updated and re-organized. Early chapters give an introduction to the types of plastics that are currently available and describe how a designer goes about the selection of a plastic for a particular application. Later chapters lead the reader into more advanced aspects of mechanical design and analysis of polymer melt flow. All techniques developed are illustrated by numerous worked examples, and problems are given at the end of each chapter - the solutions to which form one of the appendices.

In the late 1960s, the Soviet Union became aware that the U.S. was developing a new generation of jet fighters that had an exceptional range, heavy armor, and great agility in the air. These U.S. aircraft, the F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Hornet, and F/A-18 Hornet dominated U.S. air power for three decades. In the context of the Cold War, the Soviets could not be seen to be lagging behind the Americans. Their response to these new U.S. aircraft was the Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker, which was designed as a long-range air superiority aircraft and interceptor.

The first of the modified pre-production aircraft appeared in 1981, but it was not until 1984 that significant numbers of the Su-27 started to enter service. Eventually some 680 Su-27 were built for the Soviets, of which 400 remain in service with the Russian Tactical Air Force today. Outside of Russia, the Su-27 is also in service with the Chinese, and on the inventories of the air forces of Vietnam, Malaysia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Syria, and Angola.

This book describes in depth the development, operational career, history, and variants within the Su-27 family. The book incorporates color and black and white photos to portray some of the various camouflage schemes carried by the type in Soviet, Russian, and other air forces over the past two decades.

The MiG-31 Foxhound long-range interceptor flew in prototype form as the Ye-155MP in 1975 and entered production in 1979, with the first regiments becoming operational in 1982. It has also been sold to China, and it remains in service in significant numbers. Yefim Gordon, the doyen of Russian aviation writers, continues to amass an outstanding archive of previously unpublished materials. Though the MiG-31 was covered to some extent in the now out-of- print and sought-after Aerofax on the MiG-25 and -31, this new book will be close to a definitive work on this important aircraft and include an enormous amount of newly released and acquired information and a splendid array of unpublished photographs (including detailed walk-around shots) and drawings. The narrative of course includes detailed discussion of the background to the project, its development, versions, service, weaponry, and comparisons with its contemporaries such as the F-14 Tomcat. The aircraft is a favorite with enthusiasts and modelers, and the extensive coverage, both technical and operational, backed up by high-quality images and drawings, will have wide appeal. This book is intended as the first of an occasional series of in-depth monographs on major Russian types.

The Sun provides amateur astronomers with one of the few opportunities for daytime astronomy.

In order to see the major features of our nearest star, special telescopes that have a very narrow visible bandwidth are essential. The bandwidth has to be as narrow as 1 × 10-10 m (1 Angstrom) and centred on the absorption line of neutral hydrogen. This makes many major features of the Sun’s chromosphere visible to the observer. Such narrow-band "Fabry-Perot etalon filters" are high technology, and until the introduction of the Coronado range of solar telescopes, were too expensive for amateur use. The entry-level Coronado telescope, the PST (Personal Solar Telescope) costs under $500.

Solar prominences (vast columns of plasma, best seen at the edge of the solar disk), filaments, flares, sunspots, plage and active regions are all visible and can be imaged to produce spectacular solar photographs. Philip Pugh has assembled a team of contributors who show just how much solar work can be done with Coronado telescopes, and explain how to get the best from these marvellous instruments.

You want to write professional-grade applications: Rails is a full-stack, open-source web framework, with integrated support for unit, functional, and integration testing. It enforces good design principles, consistency of code across your team (and across your organization), and proper release management.

But Rails is more than a set of best practices. Rails makes it both fun and easy to turn out very cool web applications. Need Ajax support, so your web applications are highly interactive? Rails has it built in. Want an application that sends and receives e-mail? Built in. Supports internationalization and localization? Built in. Do you need applications with a REST-based interface (so they can interact with other RESTful applications with almost no effort on your part)? All built-in.

With this book, you'll learn how to use ActiveRecord to connect business objects and database tables. No more painful object-relational mapping. Just create your business objects and let Rails do the rest. Need to create and modify your schema? Migrations make it painless (and they're versioned, so you can roll changes backward and forward). You'll learn how to use the Action Pack framework to route incoming requests and render pages using easy-to-write templates and components. See how to exploit the Rails service frameworks to send emails, implement web services, and create dynamic, user-centric web-pages using built-in Javascript and Ajax support. There is extensive coverage of testing, and the rewritten Deployment chapter now covers Phusion Passenger.

As with the previous editions of the book, we start with an extended tutorial that builds parts of an online store. And, of course, the application has been rewritten to show the best of Rails V2.

Behind our most beloved hymn is a fascinating story spanning continents, cultures, and centuries. Inspired by the way "Amazing Grace" continues to change and grow in popularity, acclaimed music writer Steve Turner embarks on a journey to trace the life of the hymn, from Olney, England, where it was written by former slave trader John Newton, to tiny Plantain Island off the coast of Africa, where Newton was held captive for almost a year, to the Kentucky-Tennessee border and other parts of the South, where the hymn first began to spread.

Newton had been rescued from Africa by a merchant ship when, during an eleven-hour storm on the Atlantic, he converted to Christianity. Years later, as a minister, he wrote the hymn for use among his congregation. Through the nineteenth century, "Amazing Grace" appeared in more and more hymn books, and in the twentieth century it rose to a gospel and folk standard before exploding into pop music. It has been recorded by artists as varied as Elvis Presley, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Tiny Tim, Al Green, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, Chet Baker, and Destiny's Child. Amazing Grace closely examines this modern history of the hymn through personal interviews with recording artists.

From John Newton's incredible life story to the hymn's role in American spirituality and culture, Amazing Grace is an illuminating, thorough, and unprecedented musical history.

A few years ago, after having meandered around the Web's nooks and crannies for quite a while, I got this sudden urge to have my own home page. "Sheesh," I thought to myself, "All these people are doing this wild Web stuff that just seems so, well, cool. I want in!" So I scoured the Web and bookstores for information on creating a Web page. What I found were a bunch of highfalutin manuals written in a turgid style that made Web page creation sound like some esoteric business best left to people with advanced engineering degrees.

When I was done, however, one thing was blindingly obvious: creating a Web page is actually pretty easy! So why were there no books out there shouting this from the rooftops? I resolved to take matters into my own hands and write just such a book. The result was the first edition of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Web Page, which saw the light of day back in 1996. I must have struck some kind of chord because the book has sold an unbelievable number of copies and the latest version -- the fourth edition -- has been the best yet.

If you're looking to build your own home page on the Web, my book will show you that it's easy and fun to do.

Solutions manual to the classic textbook Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics. The exercises in the book are integral to the text. This manual provides detailed answers to the problems in Recursive Methods. Softcover.

Over the years we have received many requests for an answer book for the exercises in Recursive Methods in Economic Dynamics. These requests have come not from inept teachers or lazy students, but from serious readers who have wanted to make sure their time was being well spent.

For a student trying to master the material in Recursive Methods, the exercises are critical, and some of them are quite hard. Thus it is useful for the reader to be reassured along the way that he or she is on the right track, and to have misconceptions corrected quickly when they occur. In addition, some of the problems need more specific guidelines or sharper formulations, and a few (not too many, we like to think) contain errors — commands to prove assertions that, under the stated assumptions, are just not true.

This book walks you through your first steps in T-SQL (also known as Transact-SQL), which is Microsoft SQL Server s dialect of the standard ANSI-SQL language. You ll learn the theory behind T-SQL querying and programming, how to develop T-SQL code to query and modify data, and get an overview of programmable objects. Although this book is intended for beginners, it is not merely a step-by-step book. It goes beyond the syntactical elements of T-SQL and explains the logic behind the language and its elements. Many aspects of SQL are unique to the language, and are very different from other programming languages. This book helps you adopt the right state of mind and gain a true understanding of the language elements. You learn how to think in terms of sets and follow good SQL programming practices. The book is not version-specific; it does, however, cover language elements that were introduced in recent versions of SQL Server, including SQL Server 2008. To complement the learning experience, the book provides exercises that enable you to practice what you ve learned. The book starts with a theoretical background to T-SQL querying and programming (Chapter 1) laying the foundations for the rest of the book, and also coverage of creating tables and defining data integrity. The book moves on to various aspects of querying and modifying data (Chapters 2 through 8), then to a discussion of concurrency and transactions (Chapter 9), and finally provides an overview of programmable objects (Chapter 10). This book features a companion Web site that makes available to you all the code used in the book, the errata, additional resources, and more.

While their basic principles and ideas are well understood and cogent from a conceptual perspective, the realization of interorganizational workflows and applications based on service-oriented architectures (SOAs) remains a complex task, and, especially when it comes to security, the implementation is still bound to low-level technical knowledge and hence inherently error-prone.

Hafner and Breu set a different focus. Based on the paradigm of model-driven security, they show how to systematically design and realize security-critical applications for SOAs. In their presentation, they first detail how systems and security engineering go hand in hand and are integrated from the very start in the requirements elicitation and the design phase. In a second step, they apply the principles of model-driven security to SOAs. Model-driven security is an engineering paradigm that aims at the automatic generation of security-critical executable software for target architectures. Based on the general principles of model-driven software development, the automation of security engineering through proven and reliable mechanisms guarantees correctness and facilitates an agile and flexible approach to the implementation and high-level management of security-critical systems.

Their book addresses IT professionals interested in the design and realization of modern security-critical applications. It presents a synthesis of various best practices, standards and technologies from model-driven software development, security engineering, and SOAs. As a reader, you will learn how to design and realize SOA security using the framework of an extensible domain architecture for model-driven security.

Silverlight is a framework for building rich, browser-hosted applications that run on a variety of operating systems. Silverlight works its magic through a browser plug-in. When you surf to a web page that includes some Silverlight content, this browser plug-in runs, executes the code, and renders that content in a specifically designated region of the page. The important part is that the Silverlight plug-in provides a far richer environment than the traditional blend of HTML and JavaScript that powers ordinary web pages. Used carefully and artfully, you can create Silverlight pages that have interactive graphics, use vector animations, and play video and sound files.

If this all sounds eerily familiar, it’s because the same trick has been tried before. Several other technologies use a plug-in to stretch the bounds of the browser, including Java, ActiveX, Shockwave, and (most successfully) Adobe Flash. Although all these alternatives are still in use, none of them has become the single, dominant platform for rich web development. Many of them suffer from a number of problems, including installation headaches, poor development tools, and insufficient compatibility with the full range of browsers and operating systems. The only technology that’s been able to avoid these pitfalls is Flash, which boasts excellent cross-platform support and widespread adoption. However, Flash has only recently evolved from a spunky multimedia player into a set of dynamic programming tools. It still offers far less than a modern programming environment like .NET.

That’s where Silverlight fits into the picture. Silverlight aims to combine the raw power and cross-platform support of Flash with a first-class programming platform that incorporates the fundamental concepts of .NET. At the moment, Flash has the edge over Silverlight because of its widespread adoption and its maturity. However, Silverlight boasts a few architectural features that Flash can’t match—most importantly, the fact that it’s based on a scaled-down version of .NET’s common language runtime (CLR) and allows developers to write client-side code using pure VB.

Application Express, or APEX, is one of the most innovative products to come out of Oracle in years. APEX is an application development framework for developing database–backed applications. It’s easy enough to get started in that power users can quit storing data in random spreadsheets and instead centralize their data in the powerful Oracle database, all without developer help. Developers arent left out, however. Those who choose to can go deep and leverage the full power and flexibility of Oracles database engine.

Getting started with APEX is easy. Learning how to take full advantage of APEX is the problem. It was the problem, that is, until this book came along. In Pro Oracle Application Express, authors John Scott and Scott Spendolini open the “hood” of APEX and expose the full power behind its easy–to–use GUI interface. They show you what you need to know to produce powerful, professionally polished applications, things such as user-authentication models, approaches to layout and navigation, how to integrate Ajax, how to deal with localization issues such as time zones and translations, how to customize the look and feel of an APEX web site, and much, much more.

The authors are well–qualified to write on APEX. John Scott runs ShellPrompt, a hosting service that handles many large-scale APEX applications, some of which he is paid to develop. John is a hard–core APEX developer. His coauthor, Scott Spendolini, is one of the original creators of APEX. Both John and Scott now base their fulltime careers on developing APEX applications. Pro Oracle APEX is your opportunity to learn APEX from the very best.

    About the Author

John Edward Scott has been using Oracle since version 7 (around 1993) and has used pretty much every release since then. He has had the good fortune to work on a wide range of projects for a varied group of clients. He was lucky enough to start working with Oracle Application Express when it was first publicly released, and has worked with it nearly every day since (and loves it).

Scott Spendolini is President and Founder of Sumner Technologies, LLC (http://sumnertech.com), a small consulting firm which specializes in Oracle Application Express training and consulting services. Spendolini has assisted a number of clients from various verticals with their Application Express development and training needs. He has presented at a number of conferences, including Oracle OpenWorld, ODTUG, and IOUG and is a regular contributor to the APEX Forums on OTN.

Previously to founding Sumner Technologies, LLC, he worked for Oracle Corporation for almost 10 years, the last three of which he was a Senior Product Manager for Oracle Application Express. Prior to working with Oracle APEX, Spendolini assisted customers with the Oracle eBusiness Suite and its related technologies. Spendolini holds a dual bachelors degree from Syracuse University in Management Information Systems and Telecommunications Management.

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is unusual in receiving on-going interest in both industrial and academic circles. Issues such as plant optimization and constrained control which are critical to industrial engineers are naturally embedded in its designs.

Model Predictive Control System Design and Implementation Using MATLAB® proposes methods for design and implementation of MPC systems using basis functions that confer the following advantages:

    continuous- and discrete-time MPC problems solved in similar design frameworks;

a parsimonious parametric representation of the control trajectory gives rise to computationally efficient algorithms and better on-line performance; and

a more general discrete-time representation of MPC design that becomes identical to the traditional approach for an appropriate choice of parameters.

After the theoretical presentation, detailed coverage is given to three industrial applications: a food extruder, a motor and a magnetic bearing system. The subject of quadratic programming, often associated with the core optimization algorithms of MPC is also introduced and explained.

The technical contents of this book, mainly based on advances in MPC using state-space models and basis functions to which the author is a major contributor, will be of interest to control researchers and practitioners, especially of process control. From a pedagogical standpoint, this volume includes numerous simple analytical examples and every chapter contains problems and MATLAB® programs and exercises to assist the student.

The future direction of game development is towards more flexible, realistic, and interactive game worlds. However, current methods of game design do not allow for anything other than pre-scripted player exchanges and static objects and environments. An emergent approach to game development involves the creation of a globally designed game system that provides rules and boundaries for player interactions, rather than prescribed paths. Emergence in Games provides a detailed foundation for applying the theory and practice of emergence in games to game design. Emergent narrative, characters and agents, and game worlds are covered and a hands-on tutorial and case study allow the reader to the put the skills and ideas presented into practice.

Systematic Design for Optimisation of Pipelined ADCs proposes and develops new strategies, methodologies and tools for designing low-power and low-area CMOS pipelined A/D converters. The task is tackled by following a scientifically-consistent approach. First of all, the state of the art in pipeline A/D converters is analysed with a double purpose: a) to identify the best suited among different strategies reported in literature and taking into account the objectives pursued; b) to identify the drawbacks of these strategies as a basic first step to improve them. Then, the book proposes a top-down design approach for implementing high-performance low-power and low-area CMOS pipelined A/D converters through:

    - The conception, development and implementation of self-calibrated techniques to extend the linearity of some critical stages in the architecture of pipelined ADCs.

    - The detailed analysis and modelling of some major non-idealities that limit the physical realisation of pipelined ADCs and the proposal, development and implementation of design methodologies to support systematic design of optimised instances of these converters which combine maximum performance with minimum power dissipation and minimum area occupation.

Several implementations together with consistent measured results are presented. In particular, a practical realisation of a low-power 14-bit 5MS/s CMOS pipelined ADC with background analogue self-calibration is fully described.

The proposed approach is fully in line with the best practice regarding the design of mixed-signal integrated circuits. On the one hand, drawbacks of currently existing solutions are overcame through innovative strategies and, on the other hand, the expert knowledge is packaged and made available for re-usability by the community of circuit designers. Finally, feasibility of the strategies and the associated encapsulated knowledge is granted through experimental validation of working silicon.

Systematic Design for Optimisation of Pipelined ADCs serves as an excellent reference for analogue design engineers especially designers of low-power CMOS A/D converters. The book may also be used as a text for advanced reading on the subject.

An innovative and analytical approach to Power Electronics!

This book introduces an innovative, highly analytical approach to symbolic, closed-form solutions for switched-mode power converter circuits. This is a highly relevant topic to power electronics students and professionals who are involved in the design and analysis of electrical power converters. The author uses extensive equations to explain how solid-state switches convert electrical voltages from one level to another, so that electronic devices (e.g., audio speakers, CD players, DVD players, etc.) can use different voltages more effectively to perform their various functions. Most existing comparable books published as recently as 2002 do not discuss closed-loop operations, nor do they provide either DC closed-loop regulation equations or AC loop gain (stability) formulae. The author Wu, a leading engineer at Lockheed Martin, fills this gap and provides among the first descriptions of how error amplifiers are designed in conjunction with closed-loop bandwidth selection.

    BENEFIT TO THE READER:
Readers will gain a mathematically rigorous introduction to numerous, closed-form solutions that are readily applicable to the design and development of various switch-mode power converters.

    * Provides symbolic, closed-form solutions for DC and AC studies
    * Provides techniques for expressing close-loop operation
    * Gives readers the ability to perform closed-loop regulation and sensitivity studies
    * Gives readers the ability to design error amplifiers with precision
    * Employs the concept of the continuity of states in matrix form
    * Gives accelerated time-domain, steady-state studies using Laplace transform
    * Gives accelerated time-domain studies using state transition
    * Extensive use of matrix, linear algebra, implicit functions, and Jacobian determinants
    * Enables the determination of power stage gain that otherwise could not be obtained

    About the Author

Keng Wu is currently a Lead Member of the engineering staff at Lockheed Martin, Maritime Systems & Sensors, where he is responsible for various innovations in high reliability analog and digital circuit design in power electronics & systems for satellites and radar. He is highly experienced in analytical circuit design, system modeling, large-scale system dynamic study, test and integration for power electronics. If you are new to Windows Vista or to Windows in general, this is the book for you. In easy-to-understand language and with step-by-step explanations, this book examines all the key tasks for using Windows Vista.

Windows is an operating system. You don’t need to know the hows and whys of an operating system. You just need to know there is one, and that the operating system is like the behind-the-scenes manager who takes care of all the basic computing tasks, such as saving your work, printing a document, starting a program, and so on.

Therefore, you need only to learn how to perform these basic actions once. That is, after you learn how to print, you follow the same basic steps to print in all Windows programs. After you learn how to start a program, you can start any program. After you learn how to move or resize a window, you can perform this action for any window.

You’ll find that learning how to use Windows is the same thing as learning how to use your computer.
