*A complete course in understanding and designing RF circuits
*Practical design knowhow from a world-class author

A comprehensive introduction to designing and understanding RF circuits

RF Components and Circuits covers the practicalities of designing and building circuits, including fault-finding and use of test equipment.

The RF circuits covered in this book are the heart of the electronic design of TV sets, personal mobile radio, remote control systems, mobile phones, and digital TV and radio, making it essential reading for radio and electronics engineers, students and advanced electronics hobbyists.

Joe Carr demystifies the RF design process, presenting real-world design principles, tips and rules-of-thumb with a minimum of mathematics. By explaining how different circuit types work, and how they can be modified Joe provides a master-class that is essential reading for electronics experts and newcomers to RF design alike.

Some basic knowledge of electronics is assumed, but the essential features of RF are fully described, including the important topic of receiver dynamic which is often overlooked in basic textbooks. The theory and circuit descriptions are geared towards genuine design applications rather than the oversimiplifications and skeleton circuits of many college texts.

During his career, the late Joe Carr was one of the world's leading writers on electronics and radio, and an authority on the design and use of RF systems. Whether you are looking for a complete self-study course in RF technology, or a concise reference text to dip into, this book has the solution.

The aim of this popular science text is to explain aerodynamic and astrodynamic flight without the use of mathematics, in an informal style, for non-technical readers who are interested in spaceflight and spacecraft.

The book will open with a concise introductory chapter, chronicling the ‘space age’ up to the present, and a brief ‘forward look’ into near-future developments. Chapter 2 provides the historical context upon which the current developments in spaceflight have been built. Orbital motion will be introduced in Chapter 3, and how to get there using launch vehicles is addressed in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 look at how spacecraft are designed, and Chapter 7 addresses the additional design constraints imposed if the spacecraft has a human crew on board. Chapter 8 gives examples of current and proposed spacecraft missions, both Earth orbiting and interplanetary. Chapter 9 will look at near future manned flight developments – for example, a mission to Mars and/or space tourism. The book closes with a concluding chapter, which reflects on prospects for the future of robotic and manned space exploration.

About the Author

Graham Swinerd has over thirty years of experience in spacecraft orbit design and analysis and in the design of spacecraft. He also has many years of experience as an engineer, both in industry, working for a number of years at British Aerospace Space Systems, and as a lecturer of spacecraft engineering at Southampton University, supervising project undergraduate and postgraduate research students. He has some 60 technical papers published in refereed journals, and numerous conference papers. He is also principal editor, and contributing author, of an award winning standard textbook in spacecraft design - 'Spacecraft Systems Engineering (3rd Edition)', Fortescue, Stark and Swinerd, Wiley & Sons, 2003. Graham Swinerd is therefore ideally suited to author a book on the subject of the design and operation of spacecraft.

Award: Luigi Napolitano Literature Award, presented by the International Academy of Astronautics, at the 55th International Astronautics Congress, Vancouver, 3 October 2004.

The authors have written a rigorous yet elementary and self-contained book to present, in a unified framework, generalized convex functions, which are the many non-convex functions that share at least one of the valuable properties of convex functions and which are often more suitable for describing real-world problems. The book will be a useful tool not only for researchers, but also for graduates and advanced students working in economics, mathematical programming, the management sciences and operations research. It begins with a review of convex analysis and the fundamental theoretical findings on generalized convexity and on optimization, including their applications. The text continues with an introductory chapter devoted to generalized monotonicity and its relationship to generalized convexity, with the characterizations of important classes of fractional programming, and with theoretical properties and sequential methods. The book also includes numerous exercises and two appendices which list the findings consulted.

Computational Fluid Dynamics: An Introduction grew out of a von Karman Institute (VKI) Lecture Series by the same title first presented in 1985 and repeated with modifications every year since that time.

The objective, then and now, was to present the subject of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to an audience unfamiliar with all but the most basic numerical techniques and to do so in such a way that the practical application of CFD would become clear to everyone.

A second edition appeared in 1995 with updates to all the chapters and when that printing came to an end, the publisher requested that the editor and authors consider the preparation of a third edition. Happily, the authors received the request with enthusiasm.

The third edition has the goal of presenting additional updates and clarifications while preserving the introductory nature of the material.

Two seemingly contradictory tendencies have accompanied the development of the natural sciences in the past 150 years. On the one hand, the natural sciences have been instrumental in effecting a thoroughgoing transformation of social structures and have made a permanent impact on the conceptual world of human beings. This historical period has, on the other hand, also brought to light the merely hypothetical validity of scientific knowledge. As late as the middle of the 19th century the truth-pathos in the natural sciences was still unbroken. Yet in the succeeding years these claims to certain knowledge underwent a fundamental crisis. For scientists today, of course, the fact that their knowledge can possess only relative validity is a matter of self-evidence.

The present analysis investigates the early phase of this fundamental change in the concept of science through an examination of Hermann von Helmholtz's conception of science and his mechanistic interpretation of nature. Helmholtz (1821-1894) was one of the most important natural scientists in Germany. The development of this thoughts offers an impressive but, until now, relatively little considered report from the field of the experimental sciences chronicling the erosion of certainty.

The aspect I still enjoy most about working on vehicles is being able to diagnose a fault that has beaten others! This skill takes a few years to develop but it is worth the effort. Diagnostic work is much like that of a detective solving a difficult crime, all the clues are usually there – if you know where to look. I think it was Sherlock Holmes (a fictional detective if you have never heard of him!) who said:

When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.
This is a great thought for a diagnostic technician to keep in mind.

To help you learn ‘where to look’ for the clues and to eliminate the impossible, this book combines some aspects of automotive technology covered in my other books. However, it goes much further with a new approach to the art of diagnostics as a science.

The skills needed to be a good diagnostic technician are many and varied. For one job you may need to listen to a rumbling noise as the car corners, for another you may need to interpret an oscilloscope waveform or a diagnostic trouble code.

Vehicles continue to become more complicated, particularly in the area of electronics. The need for technicians with good diagnostic skills therefore remains. This could be you and you should be paid well!

Look on the bright side of having complicated technology on vehicles – fewer ‘home mechanics’ and more work for you and me!

In the first expose of unjust medical experimentation since David Rothman's Willowbrook's Wars, Allen M. Hornblum releases devastating stories from within the walls of Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison. For more than two decades, from the mid-1950s through the mid-1970s, inmates were used, in exchange for a few dollars, as guinea pigs in a host of medical experiments.

An array of doctors, in conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania and prison officials, established Holmesburg as a laboratory testing ground. Hundreds of prisoners were used to test products from facial creams to far more hazardous, even potentially lethal, substances such chemical warfare agents.

Based on in-depth interviews with dozens of prisoners as well as the doctors and prison officials who performed or enforced these experimental tests, Hornblum paints a disturbing portrait of abuse, moral indifference, and greed. Central to this account are the millions of dollars many of America's leading drug and consumer goods companies made available for the all too eager doctors seeking fame and fortune through their medical experiments.

Acres of Skin is rigorously researched and shocking in its depiction of men treated as laboratory animals.

About the Author

For the last 25 years Allen M. Hornblum has served on numerous criminal justice organizations and has also served as the Chief of Staff of Philadelphia's Sheriff's Office. He currently teaches courses in urban studies, criminal justice and political science at Temple University. He is interviewed frequently by the media on various subjects pertaining to prison reform.
