Stringent industrial requirements for sophisticated performance and circumstantial control of microdevices or nanotechnology manufacturing, and other types of machinery at multiple scales, require complex materials. The adjective 'complex' indicates that the substructure influences gross mechanical behaviour in a prominent way and interactions due to substructural changes are represented directly. Examples are liquid crystals, quasi-periodic alloys, polymeric bodies, spin glasses, magnetostrictive materials and ferroelectrics, suspensions, in particular liquids with gas bubbles, polarizable fluids, etc.
The mechanical behaviour of complex bodies described in this book gives rise to a wide variety of challenging problems from the macroscopic- to the nano-world. The chapters composing this book explore various aspects of these problems, giving rise to new areas of discussion together with specific solutions.
Contributors are Carlo Cercignani, Gianfranco Capriz, Pierre Degond, Antonio Fasano, Harley T. Johnson, Sukky Jun, Krishna Kannan, Wing Kam Liu, Alberto Mancini, Paolo Maria Mariano, Ingo Müller, Kumbakonan R. Rajagopal, Jan Jerzy Slawianowski.
The book will be a useful tool for researchers and students working on the basic mathematical and physical problems accruing from the mechanics of materials.
* Leading scientific competence of contributors.
* Clear writing style linking solutions and open problems.
* Suggestions for direct technological applications and new research work.
* Mathematical models for nanotechnology devices.
The book can be a useful tool for Scholars and PhD students addressing their research activity toward basic mathematical and physical problems accruing from the mechanics of materials.
About the Author

When someone presents a bone (or series of bones) to a forensic anthropologist for identification, deciding whether or not the bone is human is one of the first steps in determining its importance in a medicolegal investigation. Almost every forensic anthropologist has been asked to drop everything and go to a scene that has been secured by law enforcement because someone believes that the skeleton in the bushes is human, only to discover that those remains are from a deer. The inconvenience and expense associated with an exercise such as this is one reason why human/nonhuman bone identification is one of the most popular subjects in seminars I present to law enforcement.
This book is intended to give law enforcement, medicolegal investigators, forensic anthropologists, and even the general public an atlas with photographs and other information necessary for bone identification. Admittedly, it is difficult to create a reference book such as this for such a large audience. Some professionals will be able to skim or skip certain sections of the book that are designed for the novice reader, while some readers will find it necessary to study the initial osteology section to learn the basic terminology used in bone identification.

Photographic images play a key role in defining global fashion culture and in charting its discursive space. They are seen by many as the driving force behind the fashion system, with cultural pundits and industry creatives heralding the photograph as fashion’s ‘ultimate signifier’ (Saville in Burgoyne 2002: 36). Since the early 1990s, fashion photography has commanded an increasing share of public consciousness, as well as a growing amount of wall space in museums, galleries and auction houses. It has engaged with new technologies and challenged ideals of beauty, it has proved politically and aesthetically provocative, economically lucrative, and ideologically potent. Despite this, fashion photography has been paid little attention by the scholarly and critical community.
Printed media on fashion photography are everywhere these days: accounts of photographers, designers and trends, volumes of portraiture and street chic, magazines and themed collections, exhibition catalogues, monographs, limitededition folios and bookworks. Critical accounts of fashion photography are much less easy to find. The limited number that exist are scattered throughout exhibition catalogues, magazines, journals, anthologies, newspapers and other media. For its part, photographic criticism has yet to engage with fashion photography in a sustained way, sharing with other forms of cultural criticism a kind of unspoken aversion to the medium. Fashion photography’s coupling with industry and commerce, its flirtation with the frivolous and the ephemeral, its role in the marketing and selling of garments, the questionable part it plays in the construction of feminine identity – none of these have helped it to gain status in the eyes of visual and cultural studies. Lumped in with other forms of advertising, fashion images have too often been subjected to a limited range of analytical tools, most of them inherited from other discourses.

And so the journey continues, and, as I’ve said before, what a long, strange trip it’s been. When I first wrote Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming in early 1999, the landscape of both books and the development world was much different than it is today. At the time, .NET was as yet unheard of, and while Visual Studio 98 ruled the day as the most popular development environment, Java was coming on strong and alternative development tools, such as Delphi, were still more competitive than they typically are today. The so-called “dot com” era was booming, and the use of database management systems (DBMS), such as SQL Server, was growing exponentially.
There was, however, a problem. While one could find quite a few books on SQL Server, they were all oriented toward the administrator. They spent tremendous amounts of time and energy on things that the average developer did not give a proverbial hoot about. Something had to give, and as my development editor and I pondered the needs of the world, we realized that we could not solve world hunger or arms proliferation ourselves, but we could solve the unrealized need for a new kind of SQL book — one aimed specifically at developers.
