"The material presented here is largely accessible to anyone interested in nuclear energy. This book is the best of its kind in providing a well-written survey of the science, technology, safety, and economics of the full range of nuclear issues, including power, waste, weapons, terrorism, biological effects, and the future of the nuclear industry. This book is highly recommended both for its content and its accuracy, and should be ready by everyone interested in our nuclear future."

-CHOICE

As energy resources, particularly fossil fuels, become strained, nuclear energy (despite its known shortcomings) must be considered as an alternative. This book presents an objective view of nuclear energy as an important source for future energy needs. It discusses various types of reactors, the nuclear fuel cycle, the problem of nuclear waste disposal, reactor accidents, safety and new types of reactors that are being considered, and the cost of electricity from nuclear power. Additional themes include the problem of nuclear weapons, their storage, and, very important, their disposal as nuclear arsenals are pared down.

This new edition has been brought up to date throughout, with new data, figures, and tables added.  The chapter on costs of electricity has been shortened, simplified, and revised to make reference to the changes caused by the electricity deregulation. A motivating introductory chapter, and a new chapter on nuclear waste disposal at Yucca Mountain have been added.

While there are many books on knowledge management, knowledge governance is a concept that has not been so well explored, and is much less understood. Knowledge governance refers to choosing structures and mechanisms that can influence the processes of sharing and creating knowledge.

The book argues that knowledge governance is a distinct issue in management and organization because knowledge processes differ on several dimensions from routine and more traditional processes. The relationship between governance issues and knowledge processes is under-researched, theoretically as well as empirically. Thematically, knowledge governance cuts across fields such as general management, human resource management, the management of intellectual capital, innovation theory, strategic management, technology strategy, and international business. Not surprisingly, existing ideas are developed from the perspectives of different fields and from different underlying disciplinary foundations; however, it often remains unclear how these ideas relate together and how they differ in terms of unit of analysis, mode of analysis, underlying logic and assumptions, etc.

This book is an important step towards overcoming the existing fragmentation in the field by providing a multi-disciplinary collection of chapters on knowledge governance. While the single chapters accentuate the pluralism in the field, they all examine issues that constitute the essence of knowledge governance.

"FreeBSD has been the secret weapon of serious network administrators for many years now and this book should provide a welcome introduction to those who have yet to discover it for themselves."
--Jordan Hubbard, Co-founder, The FreeBSD Project

FreeBSD is the engine that runs on some of today's largest Internet servers, such as Yahoo!, Microsoft's Hotmail, and Walnut Creek. The power, flexibility, and cost effectiveness of FreeBSD make it the preferred server platform of many corporate networks, including networks in which the Windows OS predominates.

The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide provides practical instructions for using FreeBSD to serve a largely Windows corporate network. Written for network managers and administrators, this book shows how FreeBSD and Windows can coexist and interoperate on the same network with few problems, and it reveals how to maximize FreeBSD's many advantages for optimal network performance.

The book contains an overview of FreeBSD serving a Windows network and a step-by-step FreeBSD installation guide. Key network server topics--system administration, Internet connectivity, Web servers, fileserving, printserving, and e-mail--are addressed in depth. You will read about specific topics, such as:

  • The FreeBSD user interface versus the Windows user interface
  • Dual booting of Windows NT and FreeBSD
  • DNS, DHCP, and TCP/IP on the corporate LAN
  • FreeBSD installation phases, X installation, PPP installation, and disk configuration
  • FreeBSD environment setup, backups, logs, and other system administrative tasks
  • Migrating password files, UNIX equivalents of DOS commands, and some Windows-to-UNIX issues
  • Internet security, proxy serving, and FreeBSD routers
  • The Apache Web server, Windows Web publishing tools, and the vi HTML tool
  • Fileserving with Samba-SMB and NetBIOS protocols, browsing, and passwords
  • Setting up LPR on Windows clients and FreeBSD
  • Managing the UNIX printserver queue
  • Installing Sendmail on FreeBSD
  • Connecting a mailserver to the Internet

In addition, The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide highlights FreeBSD's many technical advantages, the history and rationale behind its development, and its relationship to Linux. The author's Web site for this book, which includes sample code, working examples, and a Q&A forum, is located at www.freebsd-corp-net-guide.com. The CD that comes with this book contains the base FreeBSD 4.2 operating system for the Intel i386 platform, including installer and bootable CD-ROM support. The disk also contains XFree86 3.3.6 for FreeBSD, and several hundred of the most popular third-party packages for FreeBSD.

This is the first volume in a series of books on selected topics in Nanoscale Science and Technology based on lectures given at the well-known INFN schools of the same name. The aim of this collection is to provide a reference corpus of suitable, introductory material to relevant subfields, as they mature over time, by gathering the significantly expanded and edited versions of tutorial lectures, given over the years by internationally known experts.

The present set of notes results in particular from the participation and dedication of prestigious lecturers, such as Vincenzo Balzani, Santina Carnazza, Andrea Salis Barbara Panessa-Warren and Stefano Bellucci. As usual, the lectures were subsequently carefully edited and reworked, taking into account the extensive follow-up discussions.

A tutorial lecture by Vincenzo Balzani and collaborators (Univ. Bologna, Italy) introduces the reader to the topic of molecular devices and machines, seen as a journey into the nano world. Santina Carnazza (Univ. of Messina, Italy) contribution deals with surface bio-functionalization aimed to enhance promonocytic cells adhesion and spatial confinement, and micro-patterning of polymer surfaces. Andrea Salis and co-workers (Univ. Cagliari, Italy) go about biotechnological applications of lipases immobilized onto porous materials, i.e. biodiesel production and biosensors.

Understanding the biological effects of nanoparticles at the mesoscopic (microPET) and microscopic levels (light and electron microscopy) is essential to predict nanoparticle processing, degradation and excretion in cells, and mammalian systems in general. In this respect, Barbara Panessa-Warren (BNL, USA) in her lecture provides the reader with an overview of the types of phenomena occuring with living cells and tissues exposed to nanoparticles, as well as new experimental data on the biological cell and tissue responses in vitro and in vivo to nanoparticles designed for bio-medical use. An extensive contribution to review recent results about the toxicity of nanomaterials, concentrating in particular on carbon nanotubes, is the subject of the tutorial by Stefano Bellucci (INFN-LNF, Italy).

In recent years, the need for help in understanding project behaviour has been exacerbated, as projects have become more complex while time-scales have tightened, adding to project complexity. Project teams however, rarely pay sufficient attention to modelling the behaviour of projects and this can lead to inadequate risk analysis, ineffective project control, and uninformed "lessons learned".

Because the behaviour of complex projects is often puzzling, or counter-intuitive, we need models. This book presents a structured toolkit of techniques, developed gradually from the simple to the more complex, and provides examples to show where, when and why the techniques should be used. It looks at what causes project complexity, describes various aspects of project behaviour and develops modelling tools.

Starting with more traditional techniques modelling individual effects on projects, giving a full treatment (including some novel network concepts) the book enables readers to build breakdown - and network - type models. It also considers some of the more difficult aspects of modelling by moving into the "softer", more subjective, effects and then looking at systemic models of the effects as they come together. Finally, it looks at various methods of developing hybrid tools, to utilise the benefits of combinations of techniques.

Based on a wealth of practical experience and bringing together a range of tried and tested techniques, this book explains where the use of modelling can help estimate, monitor, control and analyse projects and thus lead to successful implementation.

What is an 'all-IP' network? What difference will IP networking make to 3G services?

Third Generation (3G) mobile offers access to broadband multimedia services - and in the future most of these, even voice and video, will be IP-based. However 3G networks are not based on IP technologies, rather they are an evolution from existing 2G networks. Much work needs to be done to IP QoS and mobility protocols and architectures for them to be able to provide the functionality 3G requires.

IP for 3G gives a comprehensive overview of 3G networking functionality and examines how IP protocols can be developed to provide some of the basic building blocks of a mobile system (mobility, QoS and call control)

Features:

  • Clear explanation of how 3G works at the network level.
  • Review of IP protocol and architectural principles.
  • Extensive review, classification and analysis of IP mobility protocols - macro and micro- including IPv6.
  • Analysis of IP QoS protocols and proposed solutions for mobile networks.
  • Tutorial on SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and how SIP can be used for multimedia session control.
  • Description of latest UMTS developments - including Release 5.
  • Discussion of 4G networks - what does 4G mean?
IP for 3G will appeal to mobile telecommunications and network engineers who want to know about future developments as well as system designers and developers. Students and academics on postgraduate courses related to telecommunications, especially 3G networking or IP protocols, will find this text ideal supplementary reading, only assuming a general knowledge of GSM and general networking principles.

A self-contained approach to DSP techniques and applications in radar imaging

The processing of radar images, in general, consists of three major fields: Digital Signal Processing (DSP); antenna and radar operation; and algorithms used to process the radar images. This book brings together material from these different areas to allow readers to gain a thorough understanding of how radar images are processed.

The book is divided into three main parts and covers:

  • DSP principles and signal characteristics in both analog and digital domains, advanced signal sampling, and interpolation techniques
  • Antenna theory (Maxwell equation, radiation field from dipole, and linear phased array), radar fundamentals, radar modulation, and target-detection techniques (continuous wave, pulsed Linear Frequency Modulation, and stepped Frequency Modulation)

  • Properties of radar images, algorithms used for radar image processing, simulation examples, and results of satellite image files processed by Range-Doppler and Stolt interpolation algorithms

The book fully utilizes the computing and graphical capability of MATLAB® to display the signals at various processing stages in 3D and/or cross-sectional views. Additionally, the text is complemented with flowcharts and system block diagrams to aid in readers' comprehension.
