This volume brings together new and important research from the top experts in hominid diets across multiple fields. The objective of the volume is to explore if there is a consensus between the different methods, allowing us to better understand the nature of hominin dietary strategies through time. Contributions focus on modern studies, faunal studies, physical anthropology, archaeological studies, and isotopic studies, all aimed at answering the major questions of the evolution of hominid diets, such as: meat-eating emergence, hunting vs. scavenging, hunting technologies, and resource intensification in later humans.

‘Assembling a rich blend from the realms of archaeology, paleoanthropology and isotopic analysis, this excellent text confronts the perennial question: what was our ancestral diet?’ Henry Schwarcz, McMaster University, Ontario, Canada

'This masterful multidisciplinary synthesis of human dietary evolution is simply a must-have reference for all biological anthropologists, archaeologists and palaeoanthropologists interested in our past.' Leslie Aiello, Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research

About the Author

Jean-Jacques, Hublin, Ph.D., is currently a Professor at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig (Germany), where he also serves as the Director of the Department of Human Evolution. Initially his research focuses on the origin and evolution of Neanderthals and he has proposed an accretion model for the emergence of the Neandertal lineage that roots it in time in the middle of the middle Pleistocene. He also worked on the processes associated with the emergence of Homo sapiens and on the interactions between Neanderthals and anatomically modern humans in Europe. He developed the use of medical and virtual imaging in the reconstruction and study of fossil hominids and paid attention to the growth and development issues. He has led field operations in North Africa, Spain and France. In addition to his scientific papers, he has regularly published popular books (with translations in English, Italian, Spanish and Chinese) and articles on the subjects of Neanderthal and early modern human evolution. Significant past research and teaching appointments include: Deputy Director for Anthropology, Prehistory and Paleo-environmental Sciences, Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (2000-2003), Researcher, Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (1981-2000), Visiting Professor, University of California at Berkeley (1992), Harvard University (1997) and Stanford University (1999), Elected member of the French National Committee of Scientific Research (1991-2000).

Michael P. Richards is a Professor at the Department of Human Evolution where he runs the archaeological science group. His research interests primarily involve isotope analysis in archaeology, palaeoanthropology and palaeontology, especially for reconstructing past diets and migration patterns. Most of his research has involved the application of stable isotope analysis (C and N) of bone collagen to determine human and animal diets, and especially diet shifts, in Prehistoric and Historic Europe. Particular areas of interest are the shift in diet between the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods in Europe, associated with the adoption of agriculture, and contrasting the diets of Neanderthals and modern humans in Europe. Mike’s current research involves the use of other isotopes to reconstruct climate and migration patterns, as well as the extraction and isotopic analysis of proteins preserved in old or poorly preserved bone and teeth. Mike studied at the Department of Archaeology, Simon Fraser University, Canada (BA and MA), and the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, UK (Ph.D.). He held post-doctoral positions at both institutions. He was a Lecturer, Reader and Professor at the Department of Archaeological Sciences, University of Bradford, UK, a position mainly funded by the Wellcome Trust Bioarchaeology programme. In addition to his current post as Professor at the MPI in Leipzig, he also holds a part-time post at the University of Durham, UK, as Professor of Archaeology. Mike’s research has been published in journals such as Nature, PNAS, AJPA, JAS, and Current Anthropology.

This Festschrift volume contains the proceedings of the conference Mathematical Methods in Computer Science, MMICS 2008, which was held during December 17-19, 2008, in Karlsruhe, Germany, in memory of Thomas Beth.

The themes of the conference reflected the many interests of Thomas Beth. Although, these interests might seem diverse, mathematical methods and especially algebra as a language constituted the common denominator of all of his scientific achievements.

The 12 contributed talks presented were carefully selected from 30 submissions and cover the topics cryptography, designs, quantum computing, algorithms, and coding theory. Furthermore, this volume contains two invited talks held at the conference. One focuses on the area of coding theory and symbolic computation, an area especially appreciated by Thomas Beth, because it combines algebra and algorithmics. The other one discusses quantum information, which again was a focus of Thomas Beth’s research.

Mechanical reliability analysis is no longer limited to a small collection of classical statistical analyses. The speed of the present generation of microcomputers makes it possible to program and evaluate alternative computerintensive analyses for each mechanical reliability application of specific interest. Thus computer-intensive analyses are now an indispensable part of improving mechanical reliability.

This is a self-contained mechanical reliability reference/text book. It covers the probability and statistics background required to plan, conduct, and analyze mechanical reliability experiment test programs. Unfortunately this background is not adequately conveyed by a traditional probability and statistics course for engineers because it (1) does not provide adequate information regarding test planning and the associated details of test conduct, (2) does not employ vector and matrix concepts in stating conceptual statistical models, (3) does not exploit direct analogies between engineering mechanics concepts and probability and statistics concepts, (4) does not exploit the use of microcomputers to perform computer-intensive simulation-based, randomization-based, and enumeration-based statistical analyses, and (5) is woefully inept relative to practical mechanical reliability models. This book attempts to overcome each of these fundamental deficiencies.

The machine tool has been, is and no doubt will be, a key factor in industrial and equipment evolution, and as such, improving man’s quality of life. Both its evolution and perfectioning have come about due to the sectors where used and have likewise improved their products due to machinery improvements.

Machines have changed greatly in the last 30 years, particularly with the incorporation of numerical control. They have gone from being mechanical machines to real mechatronic systems, where control, drives and sensorisation are key elements. This trend is unstoppable since, thanks to the combination of improvements in materials and mechanical design with control and algorithms executed by the same, better precision, greater speed and worker-friendly inter-relations have been achieved.

When Hannibal crossed the Alps into Italy, it was no longer as simple to respond to a Roman naval threat in Spain as it was before crossing the Alps. Had Hannibal known the entire future Roman strategy before crossing the Alps then (assuming appropriate computational ability) he could have computed an optimal strategy to deal with the Rome/Cartago crisis. Classical computational complexity of algorithms deals with the questions as to what computational resources would Hannibal have needed to perform this computation. Competitive analysis of algorithms deals with the question as to whether Hannibal's decisions were reasonable given his partial understanding of Roman strategy.

Decision making can be considered in two different contexts: making decisions with complete information, and making decisions based on partial information. A major reason for the study of algorithms is to try to answer the question "which is the better algorithm". The study of the computational complexity of algorithms is useful for distinguishing the quality of algorithms based on the computational resources used and the quality of the solution they compute. However, the computational complexity of algorithms may be irrelevant or a secondary issue when dealing with algorithms that operate in a state of uncertainty. Competitive analysis of algorithms has been found useful in the study of such algorithms.
