Making music is a challenge. Setting up a recording studio—no matter how small—takes hard work and thought. Learning how to use an advanced computer application like Pro Tools is tough. Deciding what to buy is daunting. Even when you figure out where all the menus and buttons are and what they theoretically do, you’ve got to put that into practice by using Pro Tools to record, edit, mix, and produce music. Whether you’re making music as hobby, part-time gig, or profession, your goal should be to create a professional-sounding product that appeals to people.

Using Pro Tools is not the same as launching a text editor and learning how to write a letter. Music and audio production require a distinct and specialized set of skills and knowledge that most people don’t have. Learning how to put together and run your Pro Tools studio will set you apart from the crowd.

Your Pro Tools Studio is a thorough, practical guide that walks you through the steps of starting your own small home or project studio and using Pro Tools as your centerpiece digital audio workstation. You’ll learn about the different Pro Tools LE and M-Powered systems, which one is best for you, and how to install and get it running smoothly. You’ll learn how to set up your studio for recording and mixing. You’ll learn how to use Pro Tools to produce a professional audio product.

Your Pro Tools Studio approaches this daunting task by breaking it into manageable chunks that are easy to digest. Each chapter is focused and gives you perspective on what you’re learning as you learn it. Your Pro Tools Studio is for the beginning to intermediate user.

One of the biggest buzzwords in the IT industry for the past few years, virtualization has matured into a practical requirement for many best-practice business scenarios, becoming an invaluable tool for security professionals at companies of every size. In addition to saving time and other resources, virtualization affords unprecedented means for intrusion and malware detection, prevention, recovery, and analysis. Taking a practical approach in a growing market underserved by books, this hands-on title is the first to combine in one place the most important and sought-after uses of virtualization for enhanced security, including sandboxing, disaster recovery and high availability, forensic analysis, and honeypotting.

Already gaining buzz and traction in actual usage at an impressive rate, Gartner research indicates that virtualization will be the most significant trend in IT infrastructure and operations over the next four years. A recent report by IT research firm IDC predicts the virtualization services market will grow from $5.5 billion in 2006 to $11.7 billion in 2011. With this growth in adoption, becoming increasingly common even for small and midsize businesses, security is becoming a much more serious concern, both in terms of how to secure virtualization and how virtualization can serve critical security objectives.

Titles exist and are on the way to fill the need for securing virtualization, but security professionals do not yet have a book outlining the many security applications of virtualization that will become increasingly important in their job requirements. This book is the first to fill that need, covering tactics such as isolating a virtual environment on the desktop for application testing, creating virtualized storage solutions for immediate disaster recovery and high availability across a network, migrating physical systems to virtual systems for analysis, and creating complete virtual systems to entice hackers and expose potential threats to actual production systems.

This book is about archiving database data. It is not a general purpose book about archiving. It is also not a book about archiving any or all kinds of data. It is about archiving data in traditional IT databases (e.g., relational databases, hierarchical databases, and structured data in computer files). Examples of source data for archiving are data in DB2 DBMS systems on IBM mainframe systems, data stored in VSAM KSDS databases on IBM mainframes, and data stored in Oracle DBMS systems on Unix servers. It does not include data in spreadsheets or smaller relational systems such as Microsoft Access databases on desktop computers.

This perspective might seem narrow; however, this is a critically important emerging topic in IT departments worldwide. Actually I should say that the topic has emerged. The need to archive database data is showing up everywhere, although the database tools industry has been slow to provide tools, methodologies, and services to effectively accomplish it. Most IT departments know that they need to have an effective database archiving practice and are trying to figure out how to build one.
