This book investigates the portrait of management as value-free ‘technicality’ and challenges the image of managers as the selfless pursuer of an organization’s survival and development. It explains that individual interests and careers of managers are only part of a wider picture with managers as the new ruling class using and misusing organizations for their own personal and group interests.

When it is about organisations then it is about management. The organisations of our time are in essence managerial organisations (e.g. Grey 1999, Jacques 1996, Rosen 1984, Burnham 1941); even our societies are managerial societies. Our businesses and companies, both private and public sectors, our whole economy and society, even our private lives haven been conquered by yet another ideology—the ideology of management. As Thrift (2002, p. 19) put it: ‘The awful thing about modern management discourse is that you can’t escape it. It is on the walls, in people’s mouths, creeping into every moment of human interaction.’

This title presents a collection of contributions from internationally renowned researchers in the field of the Science and Technology of micro and mesoporous materials.

Crystalline solids with highly structured micro-scale pores are called zeolites. Their well-defined structure and large contact surface make them extremely useful as catalysts. Their most common use is in washing powders. Different features are caused by the shape and size of the pores and the presence of different metals in the crystal structure. Research is conducted both towards better understanding of the relations between form and function and towards identifying new possible uses.

This title presents a collection of contributions from internationally renowned researchers in the field of the Science and Technology of micro and mesoporous materials. The aim of the conference is to create an international forum where researchers from academia as well as from industry can discuss ideas and evaluate the impact of zeolites, and other porous materials, on new technologies at the beginning of the new millennium.

Gives the most recent developments in the origin, synthesis and characterisation of zeolitic materials
Outlines the impact and application of zeolites in various industrial processes
An adjourned state of art in the field of zeolites and other porous materials

Innovative Algorithms and Techniques in Automation, Industrial Electronics and Telecommunications includes a set of rigorously reviewed world-class manuscripts addressing and detailing state-of-the-art research projects in the areas of Industrial Electronics, Technology & Automation, Telecommunications and Networking.

Innovative Algorithms and Techniques in Automation, Industrial Electronics and Telecommunications includes selected papers form the conference proceedings of the International Conference on Industrial Electronics, Technology & Automation (IETA 2006) and International Conference on Telecommunications and Networking (TeNe 06) which were part of the International Joint Conferences on Computer, Information and Systems Sciences and Engineering (CISSE 2006).

All aspects of the conference were managed on-line; not only the reviewing, submissions and registration processes; but also the actual conference. Conference participants - authors, presenters and attendees - only needed an internet connection and sound available on their computers in order to be able to contribute and participate in this international ground-breaking conference. The on-line structure of this high-quality event allowed academic professionals and industry participants to contribute work and attend world-class technical presentations based on rigorously refereed submissions, live, without the need for investing significant travel funds or time out of the office. Suffice to say that CISSE received submissions from more than 70 countries, for whose researchers, this opportunity presented a much more affordable, dynamic and well-planned event to attend and submit their work to, versus a classic, on-the-ground conference.

The CISSE conference audio room provided superb audio even over low speed internet connections, the ability to display PowerPoint presentations, and cross-platform compatibility (the conferencing software runs on Windows, Mac, and any other operating system that supports Java). In addition, the conferencing system allowed for an unlimited number of participants, which in turn granted CISSE the opportunity to allow all participants to attend all presentations, as opposed to limiting the number of available seats for each session.

Research interest in inorganic membrane materials and processes has significantly increased in recent years due to novel, potentially low-cost energy and fuel production applications. This book documents the recent progress in membrane science, especially in advanced materials and novel reaction and separation concepts. The book classifies membranes based on the mechanism of operation, i.e., size exclusion filtration, solution-diffusion, and mixed ion-electron conduction of the permeate streams.

This volume is an updated reference book for medical dosimetry. It evolved from the book Radiation Dosimetry Instrumentation and Methods (CRC Press, 1991) published 10 years ago, which contains many of the basic  facts of radiation dosimetry techniques. The present book contains developments in the last decade, mainly for medical dosimetry. The two books are complementary.

Radiation dosimetry has made great progress in the last decade, mainly because radiation therapy is more widely used. Every medium to large sized hospital has an oncology department with at least one, generally more, linear accelerators for tumor treatment. Radiation dosimetry has become a common need in the medical world. Medical physicist is now a certified profession and is required by the law in every hospital where radiation treatment is given to patients. One of the main tasks of the medical physicist is to provide the physician with an accurate measurement of the dose delivered to the patient. Several measurement methods were developed together with improved calculation methods, correction factors, and Monte Carlo simulation.

Comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of UV-radiation and low energy electron induced phenomena in nucleic acid bases (NABs) and base assemblies are presented in this book. NABs are highly photostable; the absorbed energy is dissipated in the form of ultrafast nonradiative decay.

This book highlights the possible mechanisms of these phenomena which is important for all living species and discusses technical challenges in exploration of these processes. This volume will be of particular interest for those involved in understanding the photophysical/photochemical properties of nucleic acids. All chapters are written by the world's leading experts, both from the experimental and computational areas.

The IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on "Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism" was held in Il Ciocco (Italia) during the week September 3-8, 2006. It was the fourth within the series of so-called SML conferences, which are the major scientific forum for addressing kinetic and mechanistic aspects of free-radical polymerization and of ontrolled radical polymerization. Top international authors like K. Matyjaszewski, T. P. Davis, T. Fukuda and others present their latest research.

The five major themes covered were: Fundamentals of Free-Radical Polymerization, Heterogeneous Polymerization, Controlled Radical Polymerization, Polymer Reaction Engineering, and Polymer Characterization. SML IV again marked an important step forward toward the better understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of radical polymerization, which is extremely relevant for both conventional and controlled radical polymerization and for people in academia as well as in industry.

This work treats the essential elements of radio wave propagation without requiring recourse to advanced electromagnetic concepts and equations; however it provides sufficient detail to allow those concerned with wireless systems to acquire quickly a practical working knowledge of the important concepts.

The treatment commences with an analysis of how energy (and power) is conveyed in free space, taking essentially a radiative transfer approach and thus avoiding the need to understand electric and magnetic field propagation at the outset. It then examines in some detail how the proximity of the earth and the atmosphere cause the radiation travelling from a transmitter to a receiver to follow one or more of three mechanisms – the surface, sky and space waves. Most attention is given to the space wave since it is the mechanism most commonly encountered in contemporary applications.

Radio wave propagation is placed in a practical context by considering the design aspects of communications systems at microwave frequencies. That requires an understanding of noise and its importance in systems design.

The author takes the unusual step of including a fuller consideration of the electromagnetic properties of materials late in the book rather than as an introductory chapter as found in more theoretical treatments. It is placed here so that the contexts in which the knowledge of material properties is important have already been established.

The material is based on a single semester overview course suitable for later year undergraduate students in engineering or science.
