In defining the scope of our subject, we have to establish the genealogy of robotic mechanical systems. These are, obviously, a subclass of the much broader class of mechanical systems. Mechanical systems, in turn, constitute a subset of the more general concept of dynamic systems. In the end, we must have an idea of what, in general, a system is.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines system as a "complex whole, set of connected things or parts, organized body of material or immaterial things," whereas the Random House College Dictionary defines the same as "an assemblage or combination of things or parts forming a complex or unitary whole." Le Petit Robert, in turn, defines system as "Ensemble possedant une structure, constituant un tout organique," which can be loosely translated as "A structured assemblage constituting an organic whole." In the foregoing definitions, we note that the underlying idea is that of a set of elements interacting as a whole.

About the Author
Ramez A. Elmasri is a professor in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Stanford University, and a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Alexandria University.
Shamkant Navathe is a professor and the head of the database research group at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. He is well-known for his work on database modeling, database conversion, database design, distributed database allocation, and database integration. He has worked with IBM and Siemens in their research divisions and has been a consultant to various companies including Digital,CCA, HP and Equifax. He was the General Co-chairman of the 1996 International VLDB (Very Large Data Base) conference in Bombay, India.
He was also program co-chair of SIGMOD 1985 and General Co-chair of the IFIP WG 2.6 Data Semantics Workshop in 1995. He has been an associate editor of ACM Computing Surveys, and IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering. He is also on the editorial boards of Information Systems

The human genome project is set to revolutionise health care and medicine in the near future. The genetic make up of each individual gives clues as to the genetic factors that predispose one to a particular genetic disease. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), single base changes in the nucleotide DNA sequence of individuals, are thought to be the main cause of genetic variation. By comparing patterns of SNP allele frequencies between disease affected and control populations, disease associated SNPs can be identified and potential disease gene(s) located. These types of study necessitate genotyping of thousands of SNPs which requires the use of powerful, high throughput, systems of analysis. Mass spectrometry is fast becoming the preferred technology for this type of high throughput analysis. This book contains a collection of descriptions of some of the most outstanding advances in the field of mass spectrometry from which, I hope, the reader will be able to learn both the principles and the most up to date methods for its use in genomic analysis. The control unit is one of the most important parts of any digital system. As a rule, control units have an irregular structure, which makes the processing of their logic circuits design very sophisticated. One possible way to optimise such characteristics as the size or performance of control units is to adapt their structures to the particular properties of interpreted control algorithms. In this book control algorithms are represented by the linear graph-schemes of algorithms (GSA), where the number of operator vertices is not less than 75% of the total number of all algorithm vertices. A special class of control units named as compositional microprogram control units (CMCU) is proposed as the best way for interpretation of linear control algorithms. The CMCU includes a finite state machine, which addresses microinstructions of interpreted microprogram, and a microprogram control unit including control memory, which keeps only microoperations of initial GSA. The microprogram control unit uses the principle of natural addressing of microinstructions. Organization of the control unit proposed in the book increases regularity of the circuit, because the system of microoperations is implemented using standard blocks, such as PROM or RAM. At the same time, an irregular part of the system described by means of Boolean functions is reduced. It permits a decrease in the total number of logical elements (PAL, GAL, PLA, FPGA) in comparison with other models of finite state machines. The main goal of all proposed methods is reduction of the number of field-programmable logic devices used for implementation of logic circuit of the addressing FSM.
This book will be interesting and useful for students and postgraduates in the area of Computer Science and for designers of modern digital devices. Compositional microprogram control units enlarge the class of models applied for implementation of control units with modern field-programmable logic devices.
