How has design changed through the use of computers? Is it still valid to assume that a designer is in control of a design concept? What if there is a lack of predictability over what was intended by the designer and what came out on the computer’s screen? Is computer programming necessary in design today?

This book is about computer programming. Programming is a way of conceiving and embracing the unknown. At its best, programming goes beyond developing commercial applications. It becomes a way of exploring and mapping other ways of thinking. It is the means by which one can simulate, extend, and experiment with principles, rules, and methods of traditionally humandefined theories. In developing computer programs, the programmer has to question how people think and how mental processes develop and to map them into different dimensions through the aid of computers. Computers should be acknowledged not only as machines for imitating and appropriating what is understood but also as vehicles for exploring and visualizing what is not (yet) understood. The entire sequence of specifying computer operations is similar (albeit not equal) to that of human thinking. When designing software, one is actually codifying processes of human thinking to a machine. The computer becomes a mirror of the human mind, and as such, reflects to a certain level our own way of thinking.

The late imam was the greatest political and military analyst and a great politician. Imam Khomeini was the best possible pattern for all people in all ages and eras,” declared President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2008.1 It is rare for a revolutionary leader to exercise such infl uence over the imagination of his successors two decades after his passing. However, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was no ordinary leader, as his vision and words continue to resonate with generations of Iranian politicians. All of this raises the following questions: What kind of a state is the Islamic Republic of Iran? Is it still a revolutionary regime bent on upending the prevailing order, or is it prepared to accommodate the mandates of the international community? The truth lies somewhere in between. More than any other Middle Eastern country, Iran defi es easy characterization. The best way of understanding the Islamic Republic’s priorities is to expand the canvass and assess its foreign policy over the entire duration of its existence. Only through such an exercise can we come to terms with the complexities and contradictions that have shaped Iran’s approach to the world.

Why do people become extremists? What makes people become so dismissive of opposing views? Why is political and cultural polarization so pervasive in America? Why do groups of teenagers, investors, and corporations take unnecessary risks? What leads groups to engage in such destructive acts as terrorism and ethic cleansing?

In Going to Extremes, renowned legal scholar and best-selling author Cass Sunstein offers startling insights into why and when people gravitate toward extremism. Sunstein marshals an abundance of evidence that shows that when like-minded people talk to one another, they tend to become more extreme in their views than they were before. This point applies to such diverse groups as religious organizations, corporate boards, investment clubs, and White House officials. Sunstein introduces original research to show that when liberals are brought together to debate affirmative action, they end up more supportive of it, while conservatives brought together to discuss same-sex unions become skeptical about same-sex unions. In courtrooms, radio stations, and chatrooms, enclaves of like-minded people are breeding ground for extreme movements.

Sunstein shows that a good way to create an extremist group, or a cult of any kind, is to separate members from the rest of society, either physically or psychologically. This disturbing finding casts new light on the dangers that arise whenever people self-select into niche groups of the like-minded. Sunstein's findings help to explain such diverse phenomena as political outrage on the Internet, unanticipated "blockbusters" in the film and music industry, the success of the disability rights movement, ethnic conflict in Iraq and former Yugoslavia, and Islamic terrorism.

Providing a wealth of real-world examples--sometimes entertaining, sometimes alarming-- Sunstein offers a fresh explanation of why partisanship has become so bitter and debate so rancorous in America and abroad--and of what concrete steps citizens and nations might take to halt the drift towards unjustified extremism.

About the Author

Cass R. Sunstein is the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard University and the author of many books, including Nudge (with Richard Thaler), Infotopia, Republic 2.0, Worst-Case Scenarios, Radicals in Robes, Why Societies Need Dissent, and Democracy and the Problem of Free Speech.

'Avery Kolers has written a terrific book on the idea of land and territory in political disputes. This is an incredibly important subject that has been largely ignored in political philosophy and legal theory. Kolers' book is the best writing of its kind: plausibly argued, lucidly written, and richly informed with empirical material. I learned an enormous amount and so will others interested in international justice.'

Larry May, Professor of Philosophy, Washington University in St. Louis; Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, Canberra; and author of Aggression and Crimes Against Peace (Cambridge, 2008), War Crimes and Just War (Cambridge, 2007) and Crimes Against Humanity: A Normative Account (Cambridge, 2005)

Territorial disputes have defined modern politics, but political theorists and philosophers have said little about how to resolve such disputes fairly. Is it even possible to do so? If historical attachments or divine promises are decisive, it may not be. More significant than these largely subjective claims are the ways in which people interact with land over time. Building from this insight, Avery Kolers re-evaluates existing political theories and develops an attractive alternative. He presents a novel link between political legitimacy and environmental stewardship, and applies these new ideas in an extended and balanced discussion of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. The result is the first systematic normative theory of territory, and an impressive example of applied philosophy. In addition to political theorists and philosophers, scholars and students of sociology, international relations, and human geography will find this book rewarding, as will anyone with wider interests in territory and justice.

Can territorial disputes be resolved fairly? This groundbreaking book argues that they can, through attention to ways in which people interact with land. The author offers a new theory of territory linking political legitimacy and environmental stewardship, and provides a novel application of his ideas to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

About the Author

Avery Kolers is Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Louisville.

The Summa Theologiae is Thomas Aquinas' undisputed masterwork, and it includes his thoughts on the elemental forces in human life. Feelings such as love, hatred, pleasure, pain, hope and despair were described by Aquinas as 'passions', representing the different ways in which happiness could be affected. But what causes the passions? What impact do they have on the person who suffers them? Can they be shaped and reshaped in order to better promote human flourishing? The aim of this book is to provide a better understanding of Aquinas' account of the passions. It identifies the Aristotelian influences that lie at the heart of the Summa Theologiae, and it enters into a dialogue with contemporary thinking about the nature of emotion. The study argues that Aquinas' work is still important today, and shows why for Aquinas both the understanding and attainment of happiness requires prolonged reflection on the passions.

The Summa Theologiae contains Thomas Aquinas' thoughts on the passions, the elemental forces that affect human happiness. The aim of this book is to provide a better understanding of Aquinas' account of the passions, and it argues that his masterwork is still highly relevant today.

Today technology has created a world of dazzling progress, growing disparities of wealth and poverty, and looming threats to the environment. Technology: A World History offers an illuminating backdrop to our present moment--a brilliant history of invention around the globe. Historian Daniel R. Headrick ranges from the Stone Age and the beginnings of agriculture to the Industrial Revolution and the electronic revolution of the recent past. In tracing the growing power of humans over nature through increasingly powerful innovations, he compares the evolution of technology in different parts of the world, providing a much broader account than is found in other histories of technology. We also discover how small changes sometimes have dramatic results--how, for instance, the stirrup revolutionized war and gave the Mongols a deadly advantage over the Chinese. And how the nailed horseshoe was a pivotal breakthrough for western farmers. Enlivened with many illustrations, Technology offers a fascinating look at the spread of inventions around the world, both as boons for humanity and as weapons of destruction.

Ruby in Practice increases your productivity by showing you specific Ruby techniques you can use in your projects. The book offers detailed strategies for using Ruby in a large-scale environment. You'll see concrete examples of integration, messaging, web development, and databases, all presented in a clear Problem/Solution format. This book won't help you push your deadline back, but it will help you get the job done in less time.

Above all, Ruby in Practice is a practical book for developers who want an in depth understanding of the Ruby language and its toolset. The book is divided into three major parts.

The first part concentrates on issues that developers face both from within their organizations and from their peers. The authors weigh the costs and benefits of using Ruby in enterprise development projects, the over-riding theme being that every developer should always aim to use the right tool for any particular job. The authors then examine the pros and cons of developing with Ruby, and where appropriate, compare Ruby to other languages, both conceptually and in code.

The second part discusses techniques for communication and integration of systems. The authors describe how libraries and techniques are used to facilitate messaging, web development and communication automation. They also focus on how the strategies in the first section can be used with these libraries to make development more flexible and efficient.

The last part shows how to manage data and integrate with existing data using Ruby. The authors describe techniques for using existing Ruby libraries that either replace popular Java libraries or can interface with existing data in a different way. They go on to show you how strategies covered in the first section can be used to enable Ruby to interact with existing assets or to build new data systems.

About the Author

Jeremy McAnally has been programming for about eight years and doing graphic design for four years. He is curerntly a freelance Ruby and Rails developer, consultant, and author. He has over three years' experience with Ruby and two years' with Rails; in that time has has developed a number of small, localized intranet systems and mediumt- large-scale systems in Ruby.

Assaf Arkin got bitten by the business software bug in '89, back when client-servers were the thing and C was a reasonable language for writing business logic. In '96 he switched to Java, and gave us client-servers for web apps. In '99 he discovered the beauty of XML and the appeal of open source, and was a founding member of XML Apache. In '05 he fell for Ruby's charms and has been using it since for development and for plugging holes that Java left behind.
