Intelligence quotient (IQ) is an age-related measure of intelligence and is defined as 100 times the mental age. The word ‘quotient’ means the result of dividing one quantity by another, and intelligence can be defined as mental ability or quickness of mind.

An intelligence test (IQ test) is, by definition, any test that purports to measure intelligence. Generally such tests consist of a graded series of tasks, each of which has been standardized using a large, representative population of individuals. This procedure establishes the average IQ as 100.

It is generally believed that a person’s IQ rating is hereditary and that the rate of development of a person’s mental age remains constant until about the age of 13 years, after which it slows up. Beyond the age of 18 little or no improvement is found.

When it comes to bad news, we’ve never had it so good.

Laurence Shorter is feeling anxious. Every time he opens a newspaper or turns on the radio he finds another reason to be tearful. It’s time to make a change. It’s time to be optimistic!

His plan is simple:
1. Learn how to jump out of bed in the morning.
2. Secure personal happiness.
3. Save the world.

The Optimist charts Shorter’s ambitious, year-long, international quest to seek out the world’s most positive thinkers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Jung Chang, Matthieu Ricard, California’s renowned Surfing Rabbi, and Bill Clinton. But optimism doesn’t come easy, and Shorter’s resolve is tested at every corner: by a flagging career, a troubled love affair, and his ever-pessimistic dad.

The Optimist is a hilarious and ultimately life-affirming stand against the grind of everyday strife, packed with reasons to be cheerful.

About the Author

Laurence Shorter is a stand-up comedian and writer. He has been writing and performing since 2001, when he was selected for the Old Vic Theatre’s noted "New Voices" programme. We believe that God created us with seven basic, universal desires. Each of us desires to be heard and understood, to be affirmed, to be blessed, to be safe, to be touched, to be chosen, and to be included. Having and fulfilling these desires validates our very existence. If these basic desires are fulfilled, we will enjoy a deeper and richer relationship with God and with others.

God put the seven desires deep inside our souls for good reasons. When we understand our desires and realize that they are the same for everyone, we can live in deeper and more meaningful community. Finding our commonalities draws us toward one another. Giving and receiving these desires allows us to connect with each other in truly intimate ways. Understanding our desires also helps us discover our true need for God. He is the only One who can truly satisfy our desires at the deepest level of our soul.

This book represents an effort to select and present certain aspects of the theory of matrices that are most useful in developing and appraising computational methods for solving systems of linear equations (including the inversion of matrices) and for finding characteristic roots. The solution of linear inequalities and the problems of linear programing are not explicitly considered since there are special difficulties inherent in these problems that are largely combinatorial in character and require a quite different approach.

The list of titles at the end of the book should provide convincing evidence that the problems that are treated here are of considerable interest to numerical analysts, and also to mathematicians. This list is culled from perhaps twice as many titles contained in the author's files: these files are certainly not complete, and the number of publications grows at an accelerating rate. The reason is clear. A finite digital computer can be applied to the solution of functional equations and infinite systems only when finite approximations have been made; and usually the first step toward solving a nonlinear system is to linearize. Thus finite linear systems stand at the heart of all mathematical computation. Moreover as science and technology develop, and computers become more powerful, systems to be handled become larger and require techniques that are more refined and efficient.

Ultrasound continues to be one of the most important diagnostic tools at our disposal. It is used by a wide range of healthcare professionals across many applications. This book is intended as a practical, easily accessible guide to sonographers and those learning and developing in the field of abdominal ultrasound. The most obvious drawbacks of ultrasound diagnosis are the physical limitations of sound in tissue and its tremendous dependence upon the skill of the operator. This book seeks to enable the operator to maximize the diagnostic information and to recognize the limitations of the scan.

Where possible it presents a wider, more holistic approach to the patient, including presenting symptoms, complementary imaging procedures and further management options. It is not a comprehensive account of all the pathological processes likely to be encountered, but is intended as a springboard from which practical skills and clinical knowledge can develop further.

This book aims to increase the sonographer’s awareness of the contribution of ultrasound within the general clinical picture, and introduce the sonographer to its enormous potential.

The author gratefully acknowledges the help and support of the staff of the Ultrasound Department at St James’s University Hospital, Leeds.

Are you a programmer looking for a new challenge? Does the thought of building your very own iPhone app make your heart race and your pulse quicken? If so, Beginning iPhone 3 Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK is just the book for you. Updated and revised for iPhone SDK 3, many of the discussions in the original book have been clarified to make some of the more complex topics easier to understand. In addition, all of the projects have been rebuilt from scratch using the SDK 3 templates.

Assuming only a minimal working knowledge of Objective-C, and written in a friendly, easy-to-follow style, this book offers a complete soup-to-nuts course in iPhone and iPod touch programming. The book starts with the basics, walking you through the process of downloading and installing Apple's free iPhone SDK, and then stepping you though the creation of your first simple iPhone application. From there, you'll learn to integrate all the interface elements iPhone users have come to know and love, such as buttons, switches, pickers, toolbars, and sliders. You'll master a variety of design patterns, from the simplest single view to complex hierarchical drill-downs. The confusing art of table building will be demystified, and you'll see how to save your data using the iPhone file system. You'll also learn how to save and retrieve your data using SQLite, iPhone's built-in database management system. In addition, you'll also learn about Core Data, an important persistence mechanism that has just been added with SDK 3.
