A revision of the leading textbook on personality disorders by renowned expert Theodore Millon

"Personalities are like impressionistic paintings. At a distance, each person is ‘all of a piece’; up close, each is a bewildering complexity of moods, cognitions, and motives."
–Theodore Millon

Exploring the continuum from normal personality traits to the diagnosis and treatment of severe cases of personality disorders, Personality Disorders in Modern Life, Second Edition is unique in its coverage of both important historical figures and contemporary theorists in the field. Its content spans all the major disorders–Antisocial, Avoidant, Depressive, Compulsive, Histrionic, Narcissistic, Paranoid, Schizoid, and Borderline–as well as their many subtypes. Attention to detail and in-depth discussion of the subtleties involved in these debilitating personality disorders make this book an ideal companion to the DSM-IV™.

Fully updated with the latest research and theory, this important text features:

  • Discussion of the distinctive clinical features and developmental roots of personality disorders
  • Balanced coverage of the major theoretical perspectives–biological, psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive, and evolutionary
  • Individual chapters on all DSM-IV™ personality disorders and their several subtypes and mixtures
  • Case studies throughout the text that bring to life the many faces of these disorders

Including a new assessment section that singles out behavioral indicators considered to have positive predictive power for the disorders, this Second Edition also includes a special focus on developmental, gender, and cultural issues specific to each disorder. A comprehensive reference suitable for today’s practitioners, Personality Disorders in Modern Life, Second Edition features a clear style that also makes it a valuable resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students. New, unexpected and largely unexplored physical phenomena occur in systems cooled to very low temperatures. The background temperature in the universe is approximately 2.7 K, but much lower temperatures have now been obtained in the laboratory. This book reviews the progress in a number of related fields in which the common themes are low temperatures and molecules, not atoms.

This book brings together, for the first time, the results of recent research in areas ranging from the chemistry of cold interstellar clouds (10 20 K), through laboratory studies of the spectroscopy and kinetics of ions, radicals and molecules, to studies of molecules in liquid helium droplets, to attempts to create molecular (as distinct from atomic) Bose Einstein condensates.

The chapters fall into two parts, the first one dealing with low-temperature experiments and environments (ca. 1 20 K). In the context of this book, these chapters can be said to deal with relatively mature fields. The second part deals with very low temperatures and very cold molecules. Here, more emphasis is placed on the methods employed to generate samples of molecules at extremely low (<1 K) temperatures.

Contents: The Chemistry of Cold Interstellar Cloud Cores (E Herbst & T J Millar); Gas-Phase Reactive Collisions at Very Low Temperature: Recent Experimental Advances and Perspectives (A Canosa et al.); The Study of Cold Collisions Using Ion Guides and Traps (D Gerlich); Theory of Low Temperature Gas-Phase Reactions (S J Klippenstein & Y Georgievskii); Molecular Spectroscopy at Low Temperatures: A High-Resolution Infrared Perspective (S Davis et al.); The Production and Study of Ultra-Cold Molecular Ions (D Gerlich); Chemical Dynamics Inside Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets at 0.37 K (A Slenczka & J P Toennies); Kinematic Cooling of Molecules (K E Strecker & D W Chandler); Manipulation of Molecules with Electric Fields (S Y T van de Meerakker et al.); Cold Collisions, Quantum Degenerate Gases, Photoassociation, and Cold Molecules (J Weiner).

This volume is based on a series of lectures on matrix calculus and tensor calculus, and their applications, given under the sponsorship of the Engineering, Science, and Management War Training (ESMWT) program, from August 1942 to March 1943. The group taking the course included a considerable number of outstanding research engineers and directors of engineering research and development. I am very grateful to these men who welcomed me and by their interest in my lectures encouraged me.

The purpose of this book is to give the reader a working knowledge of the fundamentals of matrix calculus and tensor calculus, which he may apply to his own field. Mathematicians, physicists, meteorologists, and electrical en~eers, as well as mechaiucal and aeronautical e~gineers, will discover principles applicable to their respective fields. The last group, for instance, will find material on vibrations, aircraft flutter, elasticity, hydrodynamics, and fluid mechanics.

According to Einstein, nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. Of all the mind-bending theories in modern physics, that, at least, seemed a rule the universe–let alone mankind–could never break.

But in 1994 Professor Gunter Nimtz sent a recording of Mozart’s 40th Symphony through a physical barrier at four times the speed of light. Once again, light had surprised and confounded those who sought to understand it.

Light Years and Time Travel tells the stories of the cultures and individuals determined to unlock the secrets of this mysterious force.

Neolithic man worshipped light at Stonehenge. The ancient Egyptians believed it was the sight of the great god Ra. The Greeks thought it a fire that pours from the eyes to illuminate all we behold. The revolutionary use of light in art by Brunelleschi, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, and, more recently, the Impressionists has only furthered our awe of it.

From the first scientific grapplings with light by the ancient Chinese sage Mo Ti and the Greek philosopher Empedocles through the Renaissance and down to our own time, the revelations of the true nature of light are equally astounding. We have moved from Bacon’s studies of optics–according to legend, he invented the first pair of glasses–and Newton’s dissection of light into the colors of the spectrum to Faraday and Maxwell’s revelation of light’s basis in electricity and magnetism and quantum theory’s study of light’s strangest, most unexpected properties. Light is also the force behind our most state-of-the-art technology, such as lasers and optical computers.

Now, in this new millennium, we are realizing the possibility that light may allow us to send messages backward in time.

Even this is just the beginning of our understanding of light’s true power, but Brian Clegg’s odyssey through the wonder and study of light is no less compelling for it.

The General Graduate Record Exam (GRE), or GRE General Test, is the primary standardized test for admission to graduate-level academic programs in the United States. The exam is designed and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the same company that produces the SAT. Since 2002, the GRE has been administered by computer only (except in certain remote locations outside the United States, where a paper-based version is offered instead).

Your GRE prep begins with an overview of the test. In this chapter, you’ll look at the overall structure of the GRE and find out how the exam is scored and evaluated. This chapter concludes with GRE registration information and a need-to-know list of GRE test-taking tips.

Increasingly, scientific evidence tells us that our minds don’t have to deteriorate as we age—there are things we can do now to dramatically increase the probability of staying mentally and physically fit throughout our lives. This is good news indeed, because mental fitness and agility are so directly connected to a good quality of life. Physical exercise, good nutrition, social connection with others, and mental stimulation all play important parts in ensuring that our brains remain sharp and agile.

Over the past 25 years, scientists and physicians affiliated with medical schools and universities all over the world have followed and tested large groups of people to try to understand why some people stay mentally sharp over the span of their lives and other people don’t. As a result, we now have a significant body of scientific research in an area called “cognitive reserve.” Cognitive reserve involves the brain’s ability to create new neural pathways and connections that can be used as a mental savings account, a reserve to be drawn upon in times of need. The research supports the hypothesis that many people continue to operate at a high mental level throughout their lives by building these brain reserves.
