There is perhaps no more compelling discipline in the behavioral and brain sciences today than cognitive neuroscience. This book provides a systematic examination of the cognitive neuroscience of attention, taking as its thesis that attention is not a unitary function of the brain. To fully understand attention, therefore, requires examination of the components of attention, an undertaking first begun in my previous book Varieties of Attention, published in 1 984. More than a decade later, the startling advances made in cognitive neuroscience now make possible an understanding of the neural events that are associated with the different forms of attentive behavior.

The Attentive Brain discusses the maj or cognitive neuroscience techniques used for examining attention, the mechanisms of the different varieties of attention, and the influence of development and pathology on attention. My attempt in the coverage of topics was to be as broad as possible and to discuss areas in which the most progress has been made in research. It is no longer possible for any book in cognition or neuroscience to be comprehensive, and this book is no exception. Nevertheless, several of the major areas of modern attention research are discussed.

Computer animation, for many people, is synonymous with big-screen events such as Star Wars, Toy Story, and Titanic . But not all, or arguably even most, computer animation is done in Hollywood. It is not unusual for Saturday morning cartoons to be entirely computer generated. Computer games take advantage of state-of-the-art computer graphics techniques and have become a major motivating force driving research in computer animation. Real-time performance-driven computer animation has appeared at SIGGRAPH 1 and on Sesame Street. Desktop computer animation is now possible at a reasonable cost. Computer animation on the web is routine. Digital simulators for training pilots, SWAT teams, and nuclear reactor operators are commonplace. The distinguishing characteristics of these various venues are the cost, the image quality desired, and the amount and type of interaction allowed. This book does not address the issues concerned with a particular venue, but it does present algorithms and techniques used to do computer animation in all of them.

This book is designed to teach you how to write useful programs in Visual Basic 2010 as quickly and easily as possible.

There are two kinds of beginners for whom this book is ideal:

  • You’re a beginner to programming and you’ve chosen Visual Basic 2010 as the place to start. That’s a great choice! Visual Basic 2010 is not only easy to learn, it’s also fun to use and very powerful.

  • You can program in another language but you’re a beginner to .NET programming. Again, you’ve made a great choice! Whether you’ve come from Fortran or Visual Basic 6, you’ll find that this book quickly gets you up to speed on what you need to know to get the most from Visual Basic 2010.

Visual Basic 2010 offers a great deal of functionality in both tools and language. No one book could ever cover Visual Basic 2010 in its entirety—you would need a library of books. What this book aims to do is to get you started as quickly and easily as possible. It shows you the roadmap, so to speak, of what there is and where to go. Once we’ve taught you the basics of creating working applications (creating the windows and controls, how your code should handle unexpected events, what object-oriented programming is, how to use it in your applications, and so on) we’ll show you some of the areas you might want to try your hand at next:

For more than a millennium, the ancient Olympics captured the imaginations of the Greeks, until a Christianized Rome terminated the competitions in the fourth century AD. But the Olympic ideal did not die and this book is a succinct history of the ancient Olympics and their modern resurgence.

Classics professor David Young, who has researched the subject for over 25 years, reveals how the ancient Olympics evolved from modest beginnings into a grand festival, attracting hundreds of highly trained athletes, tens of thousands of spectators, and the finest artists and poets.

The concept of selling recorded music has been around for more than a century. While the actual storage medium for music has evolved, from cylinders to vinyl discs, magnetic tape, digital discs, and now downloads, the basic notion has remained the same: a musical performance is captured to be played back at a later time, at the convenience of the consumer. Music fans continue to enjoy the ability to develop music collections, whether in physical compact disc format or in collections of digital fi les on their computer hard drives. Consumers also enjoy the portability afforded by contemporary music listening devices, allowing the convenience of determining the time and place for listening to music. The ways consumers select to access music have been undergoing changes in the past few years, as physical sales have diminished and the industry scrambles to fi nd new business models for underwriting the cost of developing new creative products.

Music consumption should not be confused with music purchases. The consumption of music by consumers has increased ( Heffl inger, 2008 ), despite the fact that sales of recorded music albums have decreased over the past decade from 785 billion units in the United States in 2000 to 535 billion units in 2008 (SoundScan). In response to the decline in sales of recorded music, record labels are experimenting with new ways to monetize the consumption of their music. For example, new services like LastFM, Pandora, and MySpace Music offer music fans the opportunity to listen to music without actually purchasing it. Record labels are compensated through advertisement revenue sharing.

A continually evolving discipline, Human Reliability Assessment (HRA) has elements of controversy from the definition of terms to the application of appropriate methods for the representation of human failure probability. The idea that human error is a random event is falling out of favor and the concept that humans can be set up to fail or succeed depending on context is gaining credibility. An in-depth exploration of current theories, Human Reliability Assessment Theory and Practice demonstrates how to model, change, and apply new approaches to a number of different high-risk industries.

The book covers data and data sources, choice of methods, training of individuals, use of simulators for HRA purposes, and the relationship between psychology, human factors, accident analyses, and human reliability. Author Anthony Spurgin has been in the forefront of HRA development for the past 20 years and has contributed to developing Human Reliability methods and tools that have been applied to the enhancement of nuclear power plant and space vehicle safety. He explores reactor performance and the demands it makes on operators to ensure plant safety. He also covers the roles of plant management in the decision-making applied to both design and operation. The book includes a number of accident studies that illustrate the key roles of operators and managers in accident mitigation and control.

The heart of HRA will always be to find creative ways of helping designers, management, operators, and authorities increase the safety and profitability of technological systems. Drawing on his personal experience, Spurgin reviews HRA from the viewpoint of the operator. The book uses examples from the nuclear industry, always on the forefront of safety, and translates how to apply the concepts to other high risk industries.

This established textbook is didactically excellent and it unifies intuitiveness with extraordinary precision of its terminology and their derivation. It was developed as manuscript to teach students in electrical engineering, and has served to do so for thousands of students over 2 decades.

Discussed is the electromagnetic field theory and its mathematical methods. Maxwell’s equations are presented and explained. It follows a detailed discussion of electrostatics, flux, magnetostatics, quasi stationary fields and electromagnetic fields.

The author presents how to apply numerical methods like finite differences, finite elements, boundary elements, image charge methods, and Monte-Carlo methods to field theory problems. He offers an outlook on fundamental issues in physics including quantum mechanics. Some of these issues are still unanswered questions. A chapter dedicated to the theory of special relativity, which allows to simplify a number of field theory problems, complements this book.

A book whose usefulness is not limited to engineering students, but can be very helpful for physicists and other branches of science.
