Photographic

Living organisms manage to solve all kinds of deviously complex problems with a natural simplicity that leaves programmers speechless. Incorporating techniques based on principles elaborated by Darwin and his intellectual descendents, a new generation of hackers has tackled hairy challenges with surprising success. Christian Jacob introduces interested programmers and scientists to these tools in Illustrating Evolutionary Computation with Mathematica, translated from German by the author. The basics of biological evolution through mutation and adaptation are covered quickly before they are adapted themselves to the purposes of computer-aided problem solving. Jacob then explores the fundamentals of evolutionary computing through well-illustrated examples and a good balance of text, formulae, and code. Genetic algorithms, evolutionary strategies, and finite state automata each get their share of attention and integration with Evolvica, Jacob's Mathematica-based genetic programming system. The system and Web enhancements to the book are available through the University of Calgary's site and are essential for getting the most from the text. The last few chapters cover advanced applications like the classic "hungry ants" programs, cellular automata, and artificial plant evolution, suggesting further possibilities for this programming frontier. Illustrating Evolutionary Computation with Mathematica is an excellent introduction and handbook for those wishing to harness the Read more...

Software for complex problem solving can dazzle people with advanced features and alluring visuals, but when actually put to use it often disappoints and even frustrates users. This software rarely follows the user's own work methods, nor does it give people the degree of control and choice that they truly need.
This book presents a groundbreaking approach to interaction design for complex problem solving applications. The author uses her vast field experience to present a new way of looking at the whole process, and treats complex problem solving software and web applications as a distinct class with its own set of usefulness demands and design criteria. This approach highlights integrated interactions rather than discrete actions, clearly defines what makes problem solving complex, and explores strategies for analyzing, modeling, and designing for exploratory inquiries.
In depth case studies ranging from IT troubleshooting to marketing analysis to risk assessments in healthcare show exactly where and what goes wrong in real world activities and how to improve them.
Presents a system and framework for analyzing complex work and takes the mystery out of eliciting patterns of work and their meanings.
Offers new perspectives for support and new design strategies for building the right models into programs so that they effectively address users' dynamic work.
Allows designers to turn findings into useful designs for problems that require users to create new knowledge but w Read more...
This volume, like so many in the Dummies series, does a good job of assuming that the reader is a raw beginner and meeting him/her at that level, leading them through the basic knowledge of the skill or topic in a laid-back, understandable way.
This is especially helpful to those of us too old to have grown up with computers (I graduated high school in '84, just as the Apple 2E was coming out - what a machine! Dot Matrix term papers and endless games of "Pong")! Bravo to the authors and to the entire Dummies team. Highly recommended! Read more...
Integrated circuits are fundamental electronic components in biomedical, automotive and many other technical systems. A small, yet crucial part of a chip consists of analog circuitry. This part is still in large part designed by hand and therefore represents not only a bottleneck in the design flow, but also a permanent source of design errors responsible for re-designs, costly in terms of wasted test chips and in terms of lost time-to-market. Layout design is the step of the analog design flow with the least support by commercially available, computer-aided design tools. This book provides a survey of promising new approaches to automated, analog layout design, which have been described recently and are rapidly being adopted in industry. Read more...

Since Lightroom first launched, Scott Kelby's The Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers has been the world's #1 best-selling Lightroom book. In this latest version for Lightroom 3, Scott uses his same step-by-step, plain-English style and layout to make learning Lightroom easy and fun. Scott doesn't just show you which sliders do what. Instead, by using the following three simple, yet brilliant, techniques that make it just an incredible learning tool, this book shows you how to create your own photography workflow using Lightroom:

1) Scott shares his own personal settings and studio-tested techniques. He trains thousands of Lightroom users at his "Lightroom Live!" tour and knows first hand what really works and what doesn't.
2) The entire book is laid out in a real workflow order with everything step by step, so you can begin using Lightroom like a pro from the start.
3) What really sets this book apart are the last two chapters. This is where Scott dramatically answers his #1 most-asked Lightroom question, which is: "Exactly what order am I supposed to do things in, and where does Photoshop fit in?" Plus, this is the first version of the book that includes his famous "7-Point System for Lightroom," which lets you focus on mastering just the seven most important editing techniques.
The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book for Digital Photographers is the first and only book to bring the whole process together in such a clear, concise, and visual way. Read more...

In the early 1960s, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was a small, multi-racial company of dancers that performed the works of its founding choreographer and other emerging artists. By the late 1960s, the company had become a well-known African American artistic group closely tied to the Civil Rights struggle. In Dancing Revelations, Thomas DeFrantz chronicles the troupe’s journey from a small modern dance company to one of the premier institutions of African American culture.
