Comentário AM:
Leave it to the archivists at Strut to uncover another facet of the near-legendary New York dance scene of the '70s and '80s. After releases from Larry Levan and Danny Krivit shedding light on what it meant to go clubbing in the late '70s, the label moved to hip-hop — that other musical phenomenon of the era — with The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash. Half mix album and half history lesson, the compilation cuts back and forth between interviews, vintage or newly recorded turntable sessions, and a few old-school standalones — Babe Ruth's "The Mexican," Kraftwerk's "Trans Europe Express," Yellow Magic Orchestra's "Computer Games" — to get listeners in the mood. Only two of the seven mix sessions are old, though the new mixes were apparently done the same way they would've if he'd been allowed his own mix album in 1982 instead of 2002. (It's a fact obviously hard to prove, but the closest he got at the time, 1981's seven-minutes-of-madness single "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel," is still breathtaking.) The new mixes sound just as good, with the master flashing across the spectrum of '70s dance — from Parliament to Thin Lizzy to Cerrone to Spoonie Gee to the Eagles — with deft flicks of the wrist serving as all the transition he needs. The 20-page color liners, produced with Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster (of the mixing history lesson Last Night a DJ Saved My Life), are the next best thing to a full video documentary. It's just slightly less revelatory than Strut's crown jewel, Larry Levan's Live at the Paradise Garage (mostly because few knew that one existed), but The Official Adventures of Grandmaster Flash is still the best look at the best DJ in history.

Música: Funk/R&B/Disco/High Energy/Electro/Dance Rock
Comentário AM:
Despite being known globally for its two top ten hits as per the U.S. Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1983, Freeez was initially known for its emergence as one of the UK's first and leading Jazz Funk bands of the very early eighties. Founded by John Rocca, Freeez gained considerable respect from the industry, DJs and the Jazz Funk and Dance public as a dance music group from London, England. Freeez is perhaps best remembered for its youthful style of British Funk especially the UK top ten eighties hit Southern Freeez and other UK and European hits. Much of the band's early work, including the track Southern Freeez became part of the Jazz-funk scene in the UK, in the early 1980s. The band were signed to the record label Beggars Banquet Records. The song "I.O.U.", written, produced and mixed by Arthur Baker, (then known for his work with New Order and Afrika Bambaatta), was also used on the 80's Breakdance movie Beat Street. It spent two weeks at number one in the US Billboard dance chart, sandwiched between the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson and David Bowie, and was number 2 in the national United Kingdom Gallup charts through the summer of 83. It was followed by other releases from the album such as "Pop Goes My Love" / "Scratch Goes My Dub," which hit the US top five. In 1987 a new remix of "I.O.U." showed the strength of the 80's anthem by climbing back up to number eighteen on the U.S. dance chart, plus number twenty-three in the national United Kingdom Gallup charts. The original group consisted of various musicians depending on the year but always with founder John Rocca and key members such as Andy Stennet - keyboards, Peter Maas - bass, and Paul Morgan or Everton Mcalla - drums. Freeez's first record, Keep in Touch, included guitarist Jean Paul Bluey Maunick founder of Incognito. Southern Freez incuded vocals by Ingrid Mansfield Alman. John Rocca and Stennet also recorded as Pictures and under other pseudo names such Pink Rhythm in 1985.

DC Comics, like most of the comic book industry, owed a great deal of its early success to superheroes. But the long underwear guys were falling out of public favor by the mid-1940s, and DC, which had pioneered in that genre, was, like most other comics publishers, trying various types of comics, hoping for something to replace the costumed characters with. They brought out two new funny animal anthologies in the early part of 1946. Nutsy Squirrel starred in one of them. The other, Animal Antics (first issue dated March-April of that year) introduced The Raccoon Kids. The kids started out in the back pages, with the cover and lead story featuring a rabbit prestidigitator named Presto Pete. The Raccoons replaced Pete for one issue in #3 (July), then took over the cover and lead spot permanently, starting with #6 (January, 1947). The artist who handled them, not just at first but almost exclusively throughout their run, was Otto Feuer (The Dodo & the Frog). The writing credit is less certain, but they're believed to have been co-created by Sy Reit (Casper the Friendly Ghost). The same team (definitely Feuer on the art, probably Reit on the script) was also responsible for Peter Porkchops.Rudy and Rollo Raccoon were typical boys, only raccoons instead of humans, about 8 years old. They were twins, like Heckle & Jeckle or Dover & Clover, but few if any story points were made of their twinhood. They didn't even dress alike. In early stories, their nemesis was Uncle Percy, who frequently played mean tricks on them — but of course, they always managed to avenge themselves with even meaner tricks of their own. Tho supposedly related, Percy didn't look like a raccoon. Maybe he was a short-haired weasel. Later, Percy was dropped from the cast, and the stars were played against a guy closer to their own age, named Muggsy Mole. From the late 1940s to the mid '50s, the DC funny animal anthologies all seemed to follow a similar arc. First, most modified their titles to suggest (without outright claiming) a connection to theatrical animation. Animal Antics became Movietown's Animal Antics with its 24th issue (February, 1950). Then all were re-titled after their lead features. Movietown's Animal Antics became Raccoon Kids with its 52nd issue (October, 1954).Then they all began faltering. Raccoon Kids was published only a couple of times in 1957. Then they all ended. The last issue was #64 (November of that year). After that, it's been as close to oblivion for them as most DC characters ever get. Like the majority of DC's funny animals, the Raccoon Kids appeared in the Funny Stuff Stocking Stuffer special (1985). That, and sporadic reprints are about the extent of their post-series existence.

Channing C. Ahn “Transmission Electron Energy Loss Spectrometry in Materials Science and the EELS Atlas"
Wiley-VCH | 2005-01-04 | ISBN: 3527405658 | PDF | 472 pages | 11,3 Mb
This book package provides a reference on electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS) with the transmission electron microscope, an established technique for chemical and structural analysis of thin specimens in a transmission electron microscope. Describing the issues of instrumentation, data acquisition, and data analysis, the authors apply this technique to several classes of materials, namely ceramics, metals, polymers, minerals, semiconductors, and magnetic materials.
Transmission electron microscopy is a workhorse for characterizing the microstructure of materials that range from polymers to superconductors. Electron energy loss spectrometry is a relatively new addition to the group of diffraction, imaging and spectroscopic techniques available for the study of materials with the transmission electron microscope. Many of themethods that are required to convert from an understanding of electron scattering physics to a new understanding of a material can be daunting. Transmission Electron Energy Loss Spectrometry in Materials Science is the result of a growing demand from materials scientists to combine analytical tools and problem-solving approaches. We hope that this emphasis on applications can help to shorten the learning curve necessary to achieve productive EELS experiments Rapid changes in instrumentation and the associated analytical methods require
an update for even the seasoned veterans of energy-loss studies. These changes include high quantum efficiency parallel detection systems, powerful analysis algorithms, and advanced spectroscopic imaging techniques.

The Cambridge Companion to Arabic Philosophy
Cambridge University Press | 2005-01-17 | ISBN: 052152069X | 468 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This collection of essays, by some of the leading scholars in Arabic philosophy, provides an introduction to the field by way of chapters devoted to individual thinkers (such as al-Farabi, Avicenna and Averroes) or groups, especially during the 'classical' period from the ninth to the twelfth centuries.
The history of philosophy in Arabic goes back almost as far as Islam itself. Philosophically interesting theological disputes were underway within two centuries of the founding of Islam in 622 C.E. At the same time some important scientific, medical, and philosophical texts from the Greek tradition were being studied and used in the Syriac tradition, with Aristotelian logic being employed in theological debates. By the third century of the Muslim calendar (the ninth
century C.E.), a great translation movement centered inBaghdad was in full bloom. In response, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish philosophers writing in Arabic began to make important contributions to a tradition of philosophizing that continues alive to the present day.
Debates and contests on logic, grammar, theology, and philosophy by Muslims, Christians, and Jews took place at the caliphal court.
The structure and foundation of the cosmos, the natures of entities in the physical world, the relation of human beings to the transcendent divine, the principles of metaphysics, the nature of logic and the foundations of epistemology, and the pursuit of the good life in ethics – in sum, the traditional issues of philosophy, old wine, albeit in new skins – were debated with intensity, originality, and penetrating insight.

Robert Lafore “Data Structures and Algorithms in Java (2nd Edition) "
Sams | 2002-11-16 | ISBN: 0672324539 | PDF | 800 pages | 3,5 Mb
Data Structures and Algorithms in Java, Second Edition is designed to be easy to read and understand although the topic itself is complicated. Algorithms are the procedures that software programs use to manipulate data structures. Besides clear and simple example programs, the author includes a workshop as a small demonstration program executable on a Web browser. The programs demonstrate in graphical form what data structures look like and how they operate. In the second edition, the program is rewritten to improve operation and clarify the algorithms, the example programs are revised to work with the latest version of the Java JDK, and questions and exercises will be added at the end of each chapter making the book even more useful.
Educational Supplement
Suggested solutions to the programming projects found at the end of each chapter are made available to instructors at recognized educational institutions. This educational supplement can be found in the Instructor Resource Center.
This section is intended for teachers and others who want a quick overview of the contents of the book. It assumes you’re already familiar with the topics and terms involved in a study of data structures and algorithms.
The first two chapters are intended to ease the reader into data structures and algorithms as painlessly as possible.
Chapter 1, “Overview,” presents an overview of the topics to be discussed and introduces a small number of terms that will be needed later on. For readers unfamiliar with object-oriented programming, it summarizes those aspects of this discipline that will be needed in the balance of the book, and for programmers who know C++ but not Java, the key differences between these languages are reviewed.
Chapter 2, “Arrays,” focuses on arrays. However, there are two subtexts: the use of classes to encapsulate data storage structures and the class interface. Searching, insertion, and deletion in arrays and ordered arrays are covered. Linear searching and binary searching are explained. Workshop applets demonstrate these algorithms with unordered and ordered arrays.
In Chapter 3, “Simple Sorting,” we introduce three simple (but slow) sorting techniques: the bubble sort, selection sort, and insertion sort. Each is demonstrated by a Workshop applet.
Chapter 4, “Stacks and Queues,” covers three data structures that can be thought of as Abstract Data Types (ADTs): the stack, queue, and priority queue. These structures reappear later in the book, embedded in various algorithms. Each is demonstrated by

John J. Amoss, Dan Minoli “Handbook of IPv4 to IPv6 Transition: Methodologies for Institutional and Corporate Networks "
AUERBACH (December 6, 2007) | ISBN: 0849385164 | PDF | 248 pages | 3,5 Mb
In 2005, the U.S. Government Accountability Office recommended that all agencies begin planning a coherent transition to IPv6. IPv6 will solve the problem of limited IP addresses and improve internetworking capabilities. This promising protocol is gaining momentum and it is only a matter of time before the transition will have to occur globally. The problem is that during the three-to-six year transition period, IPv6 and its predecessor, IPv4, will have to successfully coexist in order to ensure service continuity.
Not only federal agencies, but corporations and institutions must start planning the transition to IPv6 now to maintain the operation, security, and interoperability of their networks.
The implementation of IPv6 is essential to the continued growth of the internet and the development of new applications. The Handbook of IPv4 to IPv6 Transition Methodologies provides a wealth of best practices and procedures that will help corporations plan and implement a smooth transition to IPv6.
The Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is now gaining momentum as an improved network layer protocol. There is much commercial interest and activity in Europe and Asia, and as of press time, there also was some traction in the United States. For example, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) announced that from October 1, 2003, all new developments and procurements needed to be IPv6-capable; the DoD’s goal was to complete the transition to IPv6 for all intra- and internetworking across the agency by 2008. In 2005, the U.S. General Accountability Office
(GAO) recommended that all agencies become proactive in planning a coherent transition to IPv6. The expectation is that in the next few years a transition to this new protocol will occur worldwide.
IPv6 is considered to be the next-generation Internet Protocol [HUI199701], [HAG200201], [MUR200501], [SOL200401], [ITO200401], [MIL199701], [MIL200001], [GRA200001], [DAV200201], [LOS200301], [LEE200501], [GON199801], [DEM200301], [GOS200301], [MIN200601], and [WEG199901]. was released. In the first scene of the movie, Ant Z 4195 is talking to his psychoanalyst and saying: “…and my job, don’t get me started on, cause it really annoys me…I feel physically inadequate, I, I, my whole life I’ve never been able to lift 10 times my own body weight and when you get down to it, handling dirt is…yuck, you know is not my idea of a rewarding career. It’s this whole gung-ho super-organism thing that I, I, you know I can’t get, I try but I
can’t get it. I mean you know, what is it, I’m supposed to do everything for the colony, and what about my needs, what about me? I mean I gotta believe there’s someplace out there that’s better than this! Otherwise I’d just curl up in a larva position and weep! The whole system out there just makes me feel...insignificant!”
Z 4195 is striving to reconcile his own individuality with the communal work of the ant colony. Our unhappy and depressed ant is working for a traditional hierarchical organization, where people are not treated as valuable assets and IT systems are not yet implemented. Even worse, he is currently working for an organization that may have neither examined people management practices, nor made a real connection between people and organizational performance.
While this behavior is still prevalent in many of today’s companies, we are presenting a book about e-HRM, about how IT is changing traditional HRM functions, about how e-HRM practices are implemented. Could this be a paradox? We hope so, because as Junipier (1996) pointed out: “Paradox is

Douglas B. Reeves “The Daily Disciplines of Leadership: How to Improve Student Achievement, Staff Motivation, and Personal Organization"
Jossey-Bass | 2002-11-04 | ISBN: 0787964034 | PDF | 272 pages | 2 Mb
The Daily Disciplines of Leadership is a comprehensive and down-to-earth manual for school leaders that addresses the daunting challenges that today's principals, superintendents, and teacher-leaders face on a daily basis. Written by Douglas Reeves— a leading authority on academic standards, performance assessment, and accountability— the information in this book is based on his extensive experience working with educators, administrators, and school board members from across the country and internationally. Reeves discusses the basic purpose of leadership, presents four key leadership archetypes, and offers practical recommendations for action. Covering a wide range of topics— from accountability systems to personal communications— this book will serve as the 'go to' resource for novice and seasoned school leaders alike
Here is what I know about you. Your time is limited; each day you face competing demands not only for scarce financial resources but also for one of the most important resources of all, the time and attention of leadership. Moreover, your choices are rarely clear-cut
and you must confront the fog of ambiguity regularly. You are weary of the hype and tripe that masquerades as educational policy analysis, and you are intolerant of one more fact-free debate. You know that the worlds of education, business, government, and nonprofit organizatio ns can all contribute wisdom to one another, even while you acknowledge that the challenges of all these sectors differ. Youare frustrated and sometimes angry at the pabulum that passes for
educational research, and you get very, very cranky with the patronizing sophistry of the purveyors of doom as well as with bland reassurances that all is well. You can handle the truth, and you prefer it with unvarnished complexity and ambiguity. You know, in sum, that Einstein was right when he said that things should be made as simple as possible, but not more so.
How can this book help you? You will learn five critical insights that every senior leader and policy maker must have. First, you will learn how to create change even if there is initially no consensus in favor of change. Second, you will create a leadership profile of yourself, using the Leadership and Learning (L2) Matrix. In this way, you systematically analyze the decisions that you and other leaders make so that you focus your energies and those of your organization
on the practices with the greatest impact on success. In this way,

Organizational and Educational Change
Lawrence Erlbaum | 2002-07-01 | ISBN: 0805834095 | 312 pages | PDF | 16,5 MB
Jean M. Bartunek, the 2001-2002 President of the Academy of Management, has written an excellent scholarly book on organizational and educational change. Using a joint insider/outsider approach, this book tells the story of a change agent group--a group of teachers--that was creating change in its organization setting, a Network of Independent Schools. The group's focus was on empowerment and professional development for teachers in the Network. The book describes virtually everything that happened in the group over its first seven years and summarizes what happened during its final two years. It explores the identity, work, and evolution of change agent groups in organizations, with particular emphasis on teachers and educational change. Through the book's extensive quotations and narrative account, the reader is enabled to enter into the world of the teacher group studied over the course of its nine-year history.
In addition, the book includes analysis of the underlying processes involved in the change, focusing on the change agent group's identity, its actions and relationships with stakeholders as they jointly evolved over time, and their impacts on the vitality of the change effort. It contributes a new understanding of fundamental processes involved in organizational change, especially when viewed from the perspective of change agents. In addition, the book provides practical implications for change agents, specifically change agents in schools. As such, this account will be useful for graduate students and researchers in organizational change, educational leadership, and professional development. It is a part of Lawrence Erlbaum Associates growing series in organization management.
Organizational change initiatives are frequently led by small groups of organization members. In Quality of Work Life and similar organizational involvement initiatives, for example, task forces composed of managers and hourly employees have typically led the change initiative (Moch &
Bartunek, 1990). In schools, small leadership teams help create professional communities and school improvement initiatives (Scribner, Cockrell, Cockrell, & Valentine, 1999). Organizational transformation efforts are typically led by groups of top managers (Nutt & Backoff, 1997). Organizational task forces play a leadership role in reengineering efforts (Hammer & Champy, 1994). In shared governance initiatives in hospitals, groups of nurses typically lead the change project (Rousseau & Tijoriwala, 1999). Small groups lead diversity initiatives in organizations (Alderfer, Tucker, Alderfer, & Tucker, 1988; Friedman, 1996).
Small pilot groups typically lead organizational learning initiatives (Roth & Kleiner, 2000; Senge et al., 1999). Small groups of organization members even lead large group interventions
(Bunker & Alban, 1996). Small groups that initiate and lead organizational change efforts are often in existence for several years, including rotation and replacement of their membership.
The experiences of groups of organizational members leading change efforts, especially groups that endure over several years, have received almost no scholarly attention. Rather, attention typically is paid primarily to the overall outcomes of change efforts, without specific attention to the change agents. This is problematic. Change agent groups' understandings of the

Richard Barrett "Building a Values-Driven Organization: A Whole System Approach to Cultural Transformation"
Butterworth-Heinemann (2006-03-15) | ISBN 0750679743 | 280 Pages | PDF | 1.1 Mb
Richard Barrett, author of the best-selling book Liberating the Corporate Soul, presents his new thinking Based on his experience working with over 1,000 organizations in 32 countries on cultural transformation for the values-driven organization. He presents a whole system approach to cultural transformation, showing organizations how they can change their culture to become values-driven organizations that support their employees, their customers, their partners, their leaders, and ultimately drive effectiveness and profit.
*New thinking from best-selling author on the value-driven organization
*Integrates cutting-edge technologies available to companies on the web
*Integrates many methodologies into a whole system approach to cultural transformation
One of the many things that impressed me about Richard’s last book, Liberating the Corporate Soul: Building a Visionary Organization, was the epigraph written by the late Willis Harman, who was co-founder of the World Business Academy.Willis wrote:
Business has become the most powerful institution on the planet. The dominant institution in any society needs to take responsibility for the whole. But business has not had such a tradition. This is a new role, not well understood or accepted. Built on the concept of capitalism and free
enterprise from the beginning was the assumption that the actions of the many units of individual enterprise, responding to market forces and guided by the “invisible hand” of Adam Smith, would somehow add up to desirable outcomes. But in the last decade of the twentieth century, it has become clear that the “invisible hand” is faltering. It depended on a
consensus of overarching meanings and values that is no longer present.
So business now has to adopt a tradition it has never had throughout the entire history of capitalism: to share responsibility for the whole. Every decision that is made, every action that is taken, must be viewed in light

This is a big issue. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to interview a number of job applicants for open positions in my organization. I learned early on that you can’t rely on the Skills and Knowledge section of an applicant’s résumé to get an accurate picture of what they can and can’t do. Case in point: Back in the late 1990s my group had a position open that required an exceptionally strong background in computer hardware and networking. The job posting listed “extensive background with computers and networking” as one of the requirements for the position.
One of the candidates I interviewed claimed in her résumé to have an extensive background in these areas. In fact, during the interview she claimed to be an expert in the field. I have to admit, her résumé did look impressive.
However, as the interview progressed I began to have some doubts. This person just didn’t speak or act like a true techie, so I decided to give a little test. I asked her to connect an Iomega Jazz drive to the external SCSI port on a workstation. A pretty easy task for an expert, right? Well, she couldn’t do it. In fact, she didn’t even know where to begin.
To make a long story short, upper management eventually hired this applicant in spite of my objections. It wasn’t a good situation. She didn’t have the background required and subsequently performed very poorly on the job and eventually quit after only a year. The key problem in this situation was conflicting definitions of a “computer and networking expert.” We define this as someone who could install expansion cards, hard drives, and operating systems as well as set up a computer network.

Carl Cavanagh Hodge “Encyclopedia of the Age of Imperialism, 1800-1914 (Two Volumes)"
Greenwood Press | 2007-11-30 | ISBN:0313334048 | PDF | 1016 pages | 3,6 Mb
In 1800, Europeans governed about one-third of the world's land surface; by the start of World War I in 1914, Europeans had imposed some form of political or economic ascendancy on over 80 percent of the globe. The basic structure of global and European politics in the twentieth century was fashioned in the previous century out of the clash of competing imperial interests and the effects, both beneficial and harmful, of the imperial powers on the societies they dominated. This encyclopedia offers current, detailed information on the major world powers of the nineteenth century and their global empires, as well as on the people, events, and ideas, both European and non-European, that shaped the Age of Imperialism. Besides detailed entries that describe the formation, structure, and influence of the economic and territorial empires built by Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Japan, the Ottoman Turks, and the United States prior to World War I, the encyclopedia also offers entries on such important figures as: BLJoseph Chamberlain BLGeorges Clemenceau BLMustapha Kemal BLAlexander Kerensky BLRudyard Kipling BLHirobumi Ito BLHelmuth von Moltke BLIbn Saud Other entries cover such important events as the following: BLBattle of Blood River BLBoxer Insurrection BLCongress of Berlin BLFashoda Incident BLItalo-Turkish War of 1911-12 BLJameson Raid And still other entries cover such countries, treaties, alliances, and movements as: BLEgypt BLEntente Cordiale BLGerman Confederation BLGuinea BLJadidism BLIndia BLTreaty of Inkiar Skelessi Besides over 800 clearly written and highly informative entries, the encyclopedia includes primary documents, a chronology, and extensive introductory essay, a bibliography, a guide to related topics, and a series of useful maps.

Games For Windows March 2008
PDF | English | 18 MB
Games for Windows: The Official Magazine is a monthly computer game magazine published by Ziff Davis Media and the Microsoft Corporation. It is the successor to Computer Gaming World. The publication date of its first issue was released in November 2006. According to Ziff Davis, the magazine is to be a "rebirth" of the Computer Gaming World magazine, which has lost news stand presence over the past few years [2]. Furthermore, according to the editorial staff of CGW/GFW, the magazine will essentially remain unchanged and is in no way subject to Microsoft's influence, something reflected in the language of the legal agreement between Ziff Davis and Microsoft (akin to how the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine's (OPM) content was not influenced by Sony in any way, outside of what's in the demo discs).

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) March 2008
PDF | English | 17 MB
Electronic Gaming Monthly (often abbreviated to EGM) is an American video game magazine. It is published by Ziff-Davis as part of the 1UP Network and releases 12 issues a year (and an occasional extra "13th" issue for the Christmas season, also known as the "Smarch" issue, a reference to an episode of The Simpsons). EGM concentrates on news regarding current video game consoles (see magazine content for detailed information). The December 2006 issue introduces new sections, expanded reviews, and focuses more on the acronym of the magazine's title in a redesign. This is the first issue redesign since June 2003. EGM has said that the reason for the design shift is to keep more in line with the site layout of their website

Accounting for Managers (Briefcase Books Series)
Translated into 16 languages! The reader-friendly, icon-rich Briefcase Books series is must reading for all managers at every level.
All managers, whether brand new to their positions or well-established in the organizational hierarchy, can use a little "brushing up" now and then. The skills-based Briefcase Books series is filled with ideas and strategies to help managers become more capable, efficient, effective, and valuable to their organizations.
While they don't need the knowledge of a CPA, all managers must still have a basic understanding of how money is tracked and accounted for in an organization.
Using the sidebars and down-to-earth style that has become the Briefcase Books trademark, Accounting for Managers defines essential terms--from general ledger to chart of accounts--and, more importantly, discusses their applications in everyday business. It also introduces managers to popular accounting software programs and their use in tracking and allocating funds in the organization.

Outcome Mapping: Building Learning and Reflection into Development Programs
IDRC Books | 2006-08-28 | ISBN: 0889369593 | 140 Pages | 3.23 MB | PDF
"Outcome Mapping provides not only a guide to essential evaluation map-making, but also a guide to learning and increased effectiveness, and affirmation that being attentive along the journey is as important as, and critical to, arriving at a destination." - Michael Quinn Patton
More and more, development organizations are under pressure to demonstrate that their programs result in significant and lasting changes in the well-being of their intended beneficiaries. However, such "impacts" are often the product of a confluence of events for which no single agency or group of agencies can realistically claim full credit. As a result, assessing development impacts is problematic, yet many organizations continue to struggle to measure results far beyond the reach of their programs. "Outcome Mapping" recognizes that development is essentially about people relating to each other and their environment. The originality of this approach lies in its shift away from assessing the products of a program to focus on changes in behaviour, relationships, actions, and activities in the people, groups, and organizations it works with directly. In doing so, "Outcome Mapping" debunks many of the myths about measuring impact. It will help a program be specific about the actors it targets, the changes it expects to see, and the strategies it employs and, as a result, be more effective in terms of the results it achieves. This publication explains the various steps in the outcome mapping approach and provides detailed information on workshop design and facilitation. It includes numerous worksheets and examples.

As a manifestation of a 'cognitive turn' observable in all social sciences, Cognitive Economics is concerned with the beliefs and mental operations held by actors placed within a dynamical and strategic environment. It appears as a synthesis of an educative research program, dealing with crossed expectations of actors, and an evolutionist research program on collective learning processes.
The book mainly aims at extending the framework of game theory in order to better fit the results of rapidly increasing laboratory experiments concerned with individual choices and collective interactions. It also seeks to better explain some original economic phenomena involving boundedly rational agents in an institutional setting such as financial bubbles, job search or technological innovation.
Written in an informal way, the book is addressed to philosophers or cognitive scientists curious of how economics deal with cognition, as well as graduate students in economics eager to discover how economic science evolves.

Ethics, social responsibility, leadership, governance. These terms are heard in the classroom, in the boardroom, and viewed on the front page of newspapers and magazines. Yet serious attention to the relationships among these concepts is lacking. Although commitments to leadership, ethics, and social responsibility are evident, individuals and companies are falling short in combining these duties into policies and cultures that guide behavior and decisions. The missing element is a broad-based and integrated approach to responsible leadership and governance.
This volume provides the leading thinking on these issues and includes a discussion of emerging areas that require future attention. The contributors - leading scholars in the fields of leadership, governance and social responsibility - summarize the state of the literature, identify complementary insights and perspectives, discuss areas of conflict and disagreement, and include a provocative and stimulating agenda for further investigation. They point up practical consequences of these perspectives in light of developments that have exposed the shortcomings in practice. Several contributors focus specifically on the challenges faced by global companies in developing and maintaining leadership and governance practices that are responsive to different national institutional and cultural settings. Thorough coverage and insightful discussion make this an essential reference for scholars and students of leadership, corporate responsibility and professional ethics, as well as for all those directly responsible for establishing the ethical codes and practices of their organizations.

Unlike other histories of economics, Mark Skousen's book provides a running plot with a singular heroic figure, Adam Smith, at the center of the discipline. Skousen unites the great thinkers by ranking them for or against Adam Smith and his "system of natural liberty." He shows how Karl Marx, Thorstein Veblen, John Maynard Keynes, and even laissez-faire disciples Robert Malthus and David Ricardo detracted from Smith's classical model of democratic capitalism during periods of economic failure and upheaval, while Alfred Marshall, Irving Fisher, Ludwig von Mises, and Milton Friedman, among others, remodeled and improved upon Smithian economics as the world economy recovered and prospered.

Adolf Hitler "Mein Kampf"
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company | ISBN 97838759839 |September 1998 | PDF | 1,1 MB | 468 Pages
Adolf Hitler's autobiography Mein Kampf is as vile as any book ever published. Written in 1923 while he was in prison as a revolutionary agitator and at that point unlikely ever to be anything else, Hitler built on the connected emotions of hatred and self-pity. It is the work of a failure, what is more of a man who knows himself to be a failure. The failure is everyone's fault except his own. And all these people are against him because they belong to different races: That is the key. In the book he invents a "racial ladder" with Germans naturally at the top of it and Jews down at the bottom. If only they had been properly German, all those other people would have recognized his greatness.
But by definition they couldn't be German, and they stood in his way, and so he had to kill them, stamp them out. On the one hand, thwarted ambition; on the other hand, a hatred of humanity. The combination still has the power to send a shiver down the spine.
Hitler's fate, and the mass-murder he inspired, did not put an end to the malignant appeal of his book. There are plenty of people who know themselves to be failures and blame everyone for it except themselves. They too fantasize that they have enemies who can never be anything else because they belong to another race, and the only solution is to massacre the lot. Almost 80 years after its first appearance, Mein Kampf remains an international hit.
The Bavarian state owns the copyright but whether it collects royalties is unclear. The book is banned in Germany, but for some years Random House has been marketing an English translation, defending itself with the argument that it is a historic text which has to be studied.
Communism was perhaps the most spectacular political failure in history, killing tens of millions, and wasting the lives of hundreds of millions more. These victims mostly came from societies that were still traditional, usually agricultural. How were they to explain to themselves the calamity which Communism visited upon them? The arrival of democracy in Russia and its former satellites has brought into these countries fresh editions of Mein Kampf in half a dozen languages. In Poland the initial print-run was 20,000 copies (a significant quantity there). A minority evidently believes that Communism was all a Jewish plot, and Hitler had got things right. The authorities crack down half-heartedly.
Muslim and Arab society is today a failure much as Communism used to be. Muslims and Arabs live under absolute and despotic government which prevents them from enjoying anything like the freedom and prosperity that they see in the West and wish for themselves. On the whole they realize that they have long ago taken their history and destiny into their own hands, and so are responsible for themselves. But so dire are the injustices and the poverty, and so threatening is the tyranny over their heads, that many are lost in pity for themselves, and hatred of everyone else. A slew of racists, radicals, and Islamists share a frame of mind that the West is selfishly conspiring against them, with the Jews once again secretly in charge. Catering to such people since the early '60s, editions of
Mein Kampf have been put out in Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, and it is reported to be a bestseller in the Palestinian Authority area. It is available in London stores selling Arabic books. As its Arabic translator Luis al-Haj expresses it in his preface, "National Socialism did not die with the death of its herald. Rather, its seeds multiplied under each star."
In traditional society in the Middle East, Arabs were the masters and Jews were second-class subjects, protected though under rather demeaning conditions. European-style anti-Semitism, usually spread by missionaries and diplomats, came in during the 19th century. Zionism, another import from Europe, redefined Jews according to nationality rather than religion, and the accompanying improvement in their lowly status abruptly challenged Arab assumptions of superiority. These second-class people could surely never have done it on their own; they could only be obtaining their new power from outside — it had to be a plot. Hitler says so too in his book. He believed Zionism was "nothing but a comedy," and he could see through "this sly trick of the Jews." He wrote in Mein Kampf:
if you like it, you buy it

Don Vito hates the idea of drugs as he is quite happy with his hotel and gambling business. Don is shot by Solozzo's men. Solozzo then kidnaps one of Don's advisors, Tom Hagen and tries to make him force Don's eldest son, Sonny to agree to sell drugs, but the plan goes wrong when Sollozzo finds out that Don Corleone is still alive.
"
"Late in 1945, army veteran Michael Corleone brings his fiancee Kay Adams to meet his family on his sister's wedding day. His family, however, is a little different from most families.
His father is Don Vito Corleone, a powerful Mafia boss known as "the Godfather." His brothers Sonny and Fredo are soldiers in the organization and Sonny is the most feared enforcer in New York. His adopted brother Tom Hagen is the lawyer who handles the financial details of the family business. Scattered around the wedding reception are such luminaries as legendary hit man Luca Brasi, world-famous singer Johnny Fontane, and Mafia capo Dominic Clemenza.
After the reception, Don Vito, Sonny, and Tom, meet with Virgil Sollozzo, a drug smuggler who wants them to become partners in his business. Though Sollozzo offers attractive terms, Don Vito declines the offer.
When, a few days later, the Don is cut-down and seriously wounded by a pair of assassins, the violent Sonny is tapped to take the reigns of the family and vows to avenge his father.
In the midst of the resultant gang-war, "college-boy" Michael volunteers to kill Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey, his police protection. Meeting with the two in a small restaurant, Michael slays them both with a hidden pistol.
While Michael heads to exile in Sicily, Sonny continues the gang-war, now battling both the other five New York families and the police. When Sonny dies in a hail of gunfire, Don Vito returns from his convalescence to forge a new peace with the other families and even manages to arrange for someone else to be convicted of the murders Michael committed, allowing his youngest son to come home.
When the Don is finally felled by a heart attack and Fredo is sent to consolidate the family's power in Las Vegas, Michael is called upon to take control of the family business and take revenge on his enemies."

With the success of computer viruses like Slammer, security issues are now a top priority for Windows system administrators, right alongside day-to-day tasks such as setting up accounts and managing performance. If you use Windows 2003 Server at a small to medium-sized organization, or use Microsoft's Small Business Server, this thorough yet concise tutorial offers the hands-on advice you need for securing your network. Modern network operating systems include bundled services that range from traditional file and print sharing and Internet services to authentication, directory and remote access services each a potential security vulnerability as well as a capability. Securing Windows Server 2003 shows you how to put Windows security tools to work, and how to run the server's subsystems to protect users and resources. But that's just the beginning. Network security needs to be well thought-out, not treated as a fire drill when a threat occurs. This book focuses primarily on ways to plan and implement a secure operating environment. Microsoft security veteran Mike Danseglio uses real-world examples to show you how various security concepts relate to your own system, including:
* File System Security
* Group Policy and security templates
* Running secure code
* Authentication
* IP security
* Public Key Certificates and Public Key Infrastructure
* Smart Card technology
* DHCP and DNS security
* Internet Information Services security
* Active Directory security
* Remote access security
* Security audits
Sending secure email, and more
Many chapters include a debate, in which fictional protagonists discuss the pros and cons of a particular strategy or solution. These debates provide an objective look at competing methodologies, so you can select the solutions that best fit your network. Read this book cover to cover to create and implement a security plan, or use individual chapters as stand-alone lessons. Either way, Securing Windows Server 2003 will guide you safely through the morass of security threats.

Six Sigma for Marketing Processes: An Overview for Marketing Executives, Leaders, and Managers
Prentice Hall| February 17, 2006 | ISBN: 978-0-13-199008-1 | 304 pages | CHM| 4,5 Mb
Nearly half of the top one hundred Fortune 500 companies use Six Sigma methodology in some part of their business. These companies have been among the top one hundred for five or more years and consistently report higher revenue and significantly higher profits than competitors. This underscores the impact on the cost side. Now the focus moves to revenue growth. Six Sigma consultant Clyde M. Creveling’s Design for Six Sigma in Technology and Product Development is the standard guide for product commercialization and manufacturing support engineers who want to apply Six Sigma methodology to technology development and product commercialization. Now, in Six Sigma for Marketing Processes, Creveling joins with Lynne Hambleton and Burke McCarthy to show the ways marketing professionals can adapt and apply those same Six Sigma concepts to create a lean marketing workflow built for growth.
This book provides an overview of the way marketing professionals can utilize the value offered by Six Sigma tools, methods, and best practices, within their existing phase-gate processes, as well as the traditional Six Sigma problem-solving approach: define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC). It provides unique methods for employing Six Sigma to enhance the three marketing processes for enabling a business to attain growth: strategic, tactical, and operational. It goes further to demonstrate the way Six Sigma for marketing and Six Sigma for design can be combined into a unified Six Sigma for growth. In this book, you’ll learn how to apply Six Sigma methodology to
- Develop a lean, efficient marketing workflow designed for growth
- Enhance the three marketing arenas for growth: strategic, tactical, and operational
- Identify leading indicators of growth and become proactive about performance improvement
- Strengthen links between customers, products, and profitability
- Redesign marketing work to streamline workflow and reduce variability
- Assess and mitigate cycle-time risk in any marketing initiative or project
- Leverage DMAIC to solve specific problems and improve existing processes
- Use lean techniques to streamline repeatable processes, such as collateral development and trade-show participation

Richard Swinburne, "The Existence of God"
Oxford University Press | English | ISBN:0199271674 | 374 pages | PDF | 1.76 MB
Richard Swinburne presents a substantially rewritten and updated edition of his most celebrated book. No other work has made a more powerful case for the probability of the existence of God. Swinburne gives a rigorous and penetrating analysis of the most important arguments for theism: the cosmological argument; arguments from the existence of laws of nature and the fine-tuning of the universe; from the occurrence of consciousness and moral awareness; and from miracles and religious experience. He claims that while none of these arguments are deductively valid, they do give inductive support to theism and that, even when the argument from evil is weighed against them, taken together they make it overall probable that there is a God.
The original structure of the discussion and its conclusion have been retained for this new edition, but much has been changed in order to strengthen the argumentation and to take account of Swinburne's subsequent work on the nature of consciousness and the problem of evil, and of the latest philosophical and scientific writing, especially in respect of the laws of nature and the argument from fine-tuning. This is now the definitive version of a classic in the philosophy of religion.
"
Review from previous edition This impressive book ... deserves the serious attention of theologians ... Anyone seriously interested in philosophy of religion or systematic theology should read it."--

Clara Greed"Inclusive Urban Design: Public Toilets, First Edition"
Architectural Press | 256 pages | 2003-01-12 | ISBN:075065385X | PDF | 12.2MB
This is a unique text providing both design guidance and policy direction for the provision and design of public toilets covering city-wide, district-level and site-specific principles. It highlights the role of urban design in reversing the trend of inadequate toilet provision, and sets out guidelines for design which meets both user need and provider requirements.
Greed presents the fundamental principle that toilets should not be dealt with in isolation from mainstream urban policy, but that they should be seen as a serious core component in both strategic urban policy and local area design. She argues toilets are valuable townscape features in their own right as manifestation civic pride and good urban design - essential architectural components which add to the quality and viability of an area.
Although a range of design guidance on toilets exists there is still considerable dissatisfaction with the end product in terms of building design, levels of provision, location, safety, layout, DDA requirements and accessibility. By outlining user demands and provider constraints, Greed shows that it is essential for architects to have an informed understanding and practical knowledge of toilet issues when working with public and private sector providers.
Examples of toilet architecture from other countries, and policies from different cultural settings, are included for comparative purposes to invigorate UK perspectives.
* Brings user needs and provider considerations to the attention of urban designers and architects
* International examples of toilet architecture and policies facilitate refreshing comparisons
* The first book to deal with toilets as an integral part of urban design

Lester Packer, Midori Hiramatsu and Toshikazu Yoshikawa "Antioxidant Food Supplements in Human Health"
Academic Press | 511 | 1999-02-17 | ISBN:0125435908 | PDF | 32MB
Antioxidant Food Supplements in Human Health discusses new discoveries in the areas of oxygen and nitric oxide metabolism and pathophysiology, redox regulation and cell signaling, and the identification of natural antioxidants and their mechanisms of action on free radicals and their role in health and disease.
An essential resource for researchers, students, and professionals in food science and nutrition, gerontology, physiology, pharmacology, and related areas.
Key Features
* Health effects of antioxidant nutrients
* Nutrients of vitamins C and E, selenium, alpha-lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, carotenoids, and flavonoids
* Natural source antioxidants, including pine bark, ginko biloba, wine, herbs, uyaku, and carica papaya
Tobacco smoking is the predominant cause of lung cancer, and it has been estimated that about 80% of lung cancers are attributed to smoking (Buiatti et al., 1996). As a complement to smoking cessation in lung cancer prevention, considerable attention has been focused on possible protective factors in the diet. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables has rather consistently
been reported to be associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer (Ziegler et al., 1996). Several plausible mechanisms have been suggested, indicating that this reduction may be due to antioxidant micronutrients (Dorgan and Schatzkin, 1991). Thus far considerable attention has been directed to/3- carotene, but intervention trials have not confirmed the presence of a protective effect (Albanes et al., 1996; Hennekens et al., 1996; Omenn et al., 1996). Some evidence also suggests that the reduced risk of lung cancer associated with the intake of fruits and vegetables may be due to some other micronutrients, such as vitamin C (Block et al., 1992), flavonoids (Knekt et al., 1997a), and selenium (Clark et al., 1996). The epidemiological evidence
is, however, not yet persuasive for any of these, while the question of whether lung cancer can be prevented or slowed down by the antioxidant vitamin E has also been addressed in a number of studies (Knekt, 1994).
The aim of this chapter is to review findings from epidemiological studies on the role of vitamin E in cancer prevention and to present some new resuits from the Finnish Mobile Clinic Health Examination Survey.

Wiley | 317 pages | 2007-12-17 | 0471786241 | PDF | 16.3MB
Redox Biochemistry provides an excellent text and useful resource for students and practicing researches on redox biochemistry in medical biochemistry, enzyme structure and catalysis, environmental biochemistry, and nutrition. Additionally, it provides a useful resource for practicing researchers in the fields, particularly those in medicine (carcinogenesis, neurology and neurodegenerative diseases, cataracts/lens biochemistry, dental studies), immunology, nutrition, environmental, and pharmaceutical sciences
Richly illustrated, with full color throughout
Includes contributions from top-notch authors and experts in the field, and is edited by the leader in redox biochemistry, Ruma Banerjee.
This book grew out of our efforts since 2001 to consolidate the area of redox biology at the University of Nebraska, in recognition of the centrality of redox reactions in the life sciences. Soon we were faced with the need to teach this subject to our students and quickly discovered the paucity of compiled information that would be more readily accessible than the primary literature to a recent inductee to the field. As one thing led to another, we decided to collectively write a textbook for our students and to invite experts in the redox biochemistry field to contribute to this project. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that the idea for this cooperative project was initially planted in my mind by Howie Gendelman (University of Nebraska Medical Center), who has since been repeatedly reminded that this project has felt like an albatross.
Had it not been for the speedy and positive response that the book proposal received from our
publisher, it is likely that the inspiration to undertake this project would have rapidly dissipated.
Redox biochemistry is an incredibly broad discipline and spans the gamut of physiological and pathological life processes. This book does not attempt to be comprehensive.
It is, instead, an introduction, targeted for the beginner. It is organized into six chapters that cover: Redox Metabolism and Life, Antioxidant Molecules and Redox Cofactors, Antioxidant Enzymes, Redox Regulation of Physiological Processes, Pathological Processes Related to Redox and Specialized Methods. Each chapter is organized into multiple sections with most being written by different authors (with the exception of Chapter 1). This superfluity of writers presented obvious challenges for achieving stylistic uniformity and we decided to sacrifice some of that in favor of the substance that came from contributions by experts in the field. Martin Webb "Make Your First Million: Ditch the 9-5 and Start the Business of Your Dreams "
Capstone | 2007-08-15 | ISBN:1841127612 | PDF | 192 pages | 1,1 Mb
Thinking of starting your own business? You've come to the right place. Thousands of people take the plunge every year for thousands of different reasons; the lifestyle, the opportunity to start over again, the chance to make serious money. No one ever got rich lining their boss's pockets. So you really want to go it alone? Here's how. Make Your First Million shows you how to set up your business the right way. It covers business plans, raising finance, financial planning, the opening days, working capital, growing your business, premises, staff, branching out, preparing for exit, and much, much more.
As presenter of Channel 4’s Risking it All, serial entrepreneur Martin Webb has guided many fledgling businesses through the start-up process. His advice, tips and insider secrets will help you transform your dream into reality. Why spend your life working for the man when you could be out there making your first million?
Between the years 1993 and 2001, Simon Kirby and I started a business that ran mainly, but not wholly, pubs and clubs. We built up a series of 30 pubs – some of them branded – and sold them in 2001for a sum of money that we could only have dreamt about in 1992.
This book is about how we did it – including the bits we got right and the bits we got wrong. By reading our story you can learn from our lack of business nous and avoid some of the pain and heartache that we experienced on the road to entrepreneurial success. The fact that
we survived the many ups and downs is a testament to our achievement and gives you the opportunity to learn from the fruits of our labour – from our triumphs and our setbacks.
It all started with a fairly spectacular failure, a massive blow to our self-esteem as well as our wallets. But we sat down and worked out what we had done so catastrophically badly and this prologue passes on some of what we learned. It also passes on the change in attitude
that the failure brought about – it’s not an exaggeration to say that it scarred us for life and strengthened our resolve never to make the same mistakes again. In 1990 I was twenty-six. I l

John McDowell "Mind and World"
Harvard University Press | 1996-09-01 | ISBN:0674576101 | PDF | 224 pages | 8,5 Mb
Modern Philosophy finds it difficult to give a satisfactory picture of the place of minds in the world. In Mind and World, based on the 1991 John Locke Lectures, one of the most distinguished philosophers writing today offers his diagnosis of this difficulty and points to a cure. In doing so, he delivers the most complete and ambitious statement to date of his own views, a statement that no one concerned with the future of philosophy can afford to ignore.
John McDowell amply illustrates a major problem of modern philosophy--the insidious persistence of dualism--in his discussion of empirical thought. Much as we would like to conceive empirical thought as rationally grounded in experience, pitfalls await anyone who tries to articulate this position, and McDowell exposes these traps by exploiting the work of contemporary philosophers from Wilfrid Sellars to Donald Davidson. These difficulties, he contends, reflect an understandable--but surmountable--failure to see how we might integrate what Sellars calls the logical space of reasons" into the natural world. What underlies this impasse is a conception of nature that has certain attractions for the modern age, a conception that McDowell proposes to put aside, thus circumventing these philosophical difficulties. By returning to a pre-modern conception of nature but retaining the intellectual advance of modernity that has mistakenly been viewed as dislodging it, he makes room for a fully satisfying conception of experience as a rational openness to independent reality. This approach also overcomes other obstacles that impede a generally satisfying understanding of how we are placed in the world.

A. van Nunen "Fiduciary Management: Blueprint for Pension Fund Excellence"
Wiley | 2007-12-04 | ISBN:0470171030 | PDF | 274 pages | 1,6 Mb
Modern Philosophy finds it difficult to give a satisfactory picture of the place of minds in the world. In Mind and World, based on the 1991 John Locke Lectures, one of the most distinguished philosophers writing today offers his diagnosis of this difficulty and points to a cure. In doing so, he delivers the most complete and ambitious statement to date of his own views, a statement that no one concerned with the future of philosophy can afford to ignore.
Fiduciary Management offers an in-depth explanation of every facet of this fast-growing approach to organizing the management of an institutional investment portfolio. Expert author Anton van Nunen begins by outlining the historic shift that has brought this strategy to the attention of the investment community and quickly moves on to illustrate fiduciary management in practice; giving advice in terms of asset-liability modeling and financial markets, constructing portfolios, selecting and overseeing investment managers, benchmarking and performance measurement, and reporting.
One is to assert that good governance is worth money. I’ve never seen definitive proof of that statement, either for pension funds or for corporateboards, but it hardly needs proof. Think of any hypothetical organization.
Superimpose on it either good governance (characterized by clear delegation and decision rights) or poor governance (characterized by overlappingresponsibilities and confusion as to who is responsible for what). Which do you think is more likely to be successful? It’s as obvious as that.
The other is to recall the statement that good people can make any organizational structure work. That may well be true, but why create a structure that’s an obstacle they have to jump over? Why not give thema structure that is helpful in itself? Wouldn’t that increase the chances ofsuccess in their venture?
My point is that governance, by which I mean the way in which decision rights are assigned, is a worthwhile issue to treat seriously, and an essential ingredient if success is to be achieved by plan rather than by chance. And ‘‘fiduciary management’’ is an essential feature in the governance of definedbenefit pensions.

Long-Range Control of Gene Expression
Publisher: Academic Press | English | ISBN:0123738814 | 416 pages | Data: 2008 | PDF | 4 Mb
Description: This volume covers the current progress in understanding the mechanisms for genomic control of gene expression, which has grown considerably in the last few years as insight into genome organization and chromatin regulation has advanced. * Includes information on aspergillus genomes * Discusses sex and its role in virulence of human fungal pathogens * Covers the genomic analysis of neurospora
What constitutes long-range control is, by its nature, difficult to define. InDrosophila, cis-acting long-range elements located at a distance of a kilobase or so from the target gene’s promoter are considered to be operating at a long distance. On the other hand, in mammals the classic long-range element is the locus control region (LCR) of the beta-globin locus, sitting 50kb from the globin gene cluster. We now know that cis-regulatory elements can lie at a distance of at least a megabase, but the absolute distance that regulators are able to span to control gene expression is unknown. The properties that dictate these regulatory limits are still open to investigation. But no matter the distance, the goal is the same; that is, to convey regulatory information across an intervening stretch of DNA to control target gene expression. Although some aspects of
regulatory control have been known for three quarters of a century, the recent availability of multiple genomic sequences and high-throughput technologies has generated an emerging view of regulatory mechanisms. In this volume, we cover some of the most recent advances in this fast-moving area of genomic mechanisms involved in gene regulation.

Sarah Maxwell "The Price is Wrong:
Understanding What Makes a Price Seem Fair and the True Cost of Unfair Pricing"
Wiley | 2008-01-02 | ISBN:0470139099 | PDF | 240 pages | 1,4 Mb
An in-depth look at fair pricing practices and their affect on our everyday lives
Certainly consumers today are concerned about the unfairness of gasoline prices. And even if these concerns subside, the focus on fair pricing will shift to other areas such as the unfair costs of health care, mobile phones, prescription drugs, a college education, real estate, or hotel rooms. In The Price Is Wrong, pricing expert Sarah Maxwell explains the psychological and sociological basis of fair pricing and reveals how this issue affects our everyday lives. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, this book shows readers how unfair pricing causes an extreme emotional response. Throughout the book, Maxwell skillfully explains what makes a price seem wrong, the social norms of fair pricing, and the true cost of unfair pricing.
Dr. Sarah Maxwell (Valhalla, NY) is an expert in fair pricing, with both academic and business experience in this field. She is an associate professor at Fordham University and is Codirector of the Fordham Pricing Center. Previously, Dr. Maxwell was a vice president of marketing for Aramark and consulted with divisions in Europe and Japan.
A world-class expert in the fi eld, she has written extensively, made countless conference presentations, and conducted numerous industry seminars on the subject of fair pricing. Finally, she has sat down long enough to share her deep insights and profound understanding
of what makes a price seem fair.
Sarah has given us a book that is packed with examples of right and wrong pricing, data from her own research in fair pricing, and contributions from all the many different fi elds that have been concerned with the subject. Although the book is carefully referenced, it is written not for academics but for the general population. It is a quick, provocative read.
Sarah addresses many questions that have not been asked before: Why is it fair for gas stations to charge an extra nine-tenths of a cent per gallon? Why is it fair to pay for blood but not for body parts? Why is it fair to tip a waiter but not your mother-in-law?

Frederick Copleston "History of Philosophy, Volume 1"
Image | 1993-03-01 | ISBN:0385468431 | PDF | 544 pages | 8,7 Mb
Conceived originally as a serious presentation of the development of philosophy for Catholic seminary students, Frederick Copleston's nine-volume A History Of Philosophy has journeyed far beyond the modest purpose of its author to universal acclaim as the best history of philosophy in English.
Copleston, an Oxford Jesuit of immense erudition who once tangled with A. J. Ayer in a fabled debate about the existence of God and the possibility of metaphysics, knew that seminary students were fed a woefully inadequate diet of theses and proofs, and that their familiarity with most of history's great thinkers was reduced to simplistic caricatures. Copleston set out to redress the wrong by writing a complete history of Western philosophy, one crackling with incident and intellectual excitement -- and one that gives full place to each thinker, presenting his thought in a beautifully rounded manner and showing his links to those who went before and to those who came after him.

A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming is the first book to deliver broad coverage of the documented and undocumented object-oriented features of MATLAB??. Unlike the typical approach of other resources, this guide explains why each feature is important, demonstrates how each feature is used, and promotes an understanding of the interactions between features. Assuming an intermediate level of MATLAB programming knowledge, the book not only concentrates on MATLAB coding techniques but also discusses topics critical to general software development. It introduces fundamentals first before integrating these concepts into example applications. In the first section, the book discusses eight basic functions: constructor, subsref, subsasgn, display, struct, fieldnames, get, and set. Building on the previous section, it explores inheritance topics and presents the Class Wizard, a powerful MATLAB class generation tool. The final section delves into advanced strategies, including containers, static variables, and function fronts. With more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing object-oriented software, the expert author has developed an accessible and comprehensive book that aids readers in creating effective object-oriented software using MATLAB

Richard V. Teschner, Eston Evans “Analyzing the Grammar of English "
Georgetown University Press; 3 edition (May 15, 2007) | ISBN: 158901166X | 232 pages | PDF | 2,2 Mb
Analyzing the Grammar of English offers a descriptive analysis of the indispensable elements of English grammar. Designed to be covered in one semester, this textbook starts from scratch and takes nothing for granted beyond a reading and speaking knowledge of English. Extensively revised to function better in skills-building classes, it includes more interspersed exercises that promptly test what is taught, simplified and clarified explanations, greatly expanded and more diverse activities, and a new glossary of over 200 technical terms.
Analyzing the Grammar of English, Third Edition is the only English grammar to view the sentence as a strictly punctuational constuct—anything that begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, a question mark, an exclamation mark, or three dots—rather than a syntactic one, and to load, in consequence, all the necessary syntactic analysis onto the clause and its constituents.
It is also one of the very few English grammars to include—alongside multiple examples of canonical or "standard" language—occasional samples of stigmatized speech to illustrate grammar points.
Students and teachers in courses of English grammatical analysis, English teaching methods, TESOL methods, and developmental English will all benefit from this new edition.

In many companies Windows servers no longer just have to be integrated in an existing security infrastructure ; they make the security infrastructure. This shift means people need better understanding of security terminology, security requirements and product integration with the non-Microsoft world. Jan, with his deep and broad knowledge of both worlds (Windows and security), again provides excellent information on these topics." --Roland Schoenauen, CISSP, Banque Gnrale du Luxembourg
"Jan De Clercq's book is of critical importance for everyone who needs to design and implement security strategies in Windows Server 2003. It contains lots of details and gives answers to the 'why' and 'how' of the OS security. Based on real-world experience, this comprehensive book is full of the practical information so important for administrators in their every day jobs." --Vladimir Kaplan, Morgan Stanley Information Technology
"Windows Server 2003 was designed with security in mind. This book is a great addition to the prescriptive security guidance for Windows Server 2003 prepared by Microsoft. It is a must for every architect that is looking after implementing Windows Server 2003-rooted security infrastructures in its enterprise I.T. environment. " -- Andreas Luther, Program Manager Directory Services, Microsoft

This is the eBook version of the printed book. Most design pattern books are based on C++ and Java. But Ruby is different–and the language's unique qualities make design patterns easier to implement and use. In "Design Patterns in Ruby," Russ Olsen demonstrates how to combine Ruby's power and elegance with patterns, and write more sophisticated, effective software with far fewer lines of code. After reviewing the history, concepts, and goals of design patterns, the author offers a quick tour of the Ruby language–enough to allow any experienced software developer to immediately utilize patterns with Ruby. The book especially calls attention to Ruby features that simplify the use of patterns, including dynamic typing, code closures, and "mixins" for easier code reuse.Fourteen of the classic "Gang of Four" patterns are considered from the Ruby point of view, explaining what problems each pattern solves, discussing whether traditional implementations make sense in the Ruby environment, and introducing Ruby-specific improvements. You'll discover opportunities to implement patterns in just one or two lines of code, instead of the endlessly repeated boilerplate that conventional languages often require."Design Patterns in Ruby" also identifies innovative new patterns that have emerged from the Ruby community. These include ways to create custom objects with metaprogramming, as well as the ambitious Rails-based "Convention over Configuration" pattern, designed to help integrate entire applications and frameworks.Engaging, practical, and accessible, this book will help you build better software while making your Ruby programming experience more rewarding.

It was a chilly November afternoon. I had just consummated an unusually hearty dinner, of which the dyspeptic truffe formed not the least important item, and was sitting alone in the dining-room with my feet upon the fender and at my elbow a small table which I had rolled up to the fire, and upon which were some apologies for dessert, with some miscellaneous bottles of wine, spirit, and liqueur. In the morning I had been reading Glover's Leonidas, Wilkie's Epigoniad, Lamartine's Pilgrimage, Barlow's Columbiad, Tuckerman's Sicily, and Griswold's Curiosities, I am willing to confess, therefore, that I now felt a little stupid. I made effort to arouse myself by frequent aid of Lafitte, and all failing, I betook myself to a stray newspaper in despair. Having carefully perused the column of "Houses to let," and the column of "Dogs lost," and then the columns of "Wives and apprentices runaway," I attacked with great resolution the editorial matter, and reading it from beginning to end without understanding a syllable, conceived the possibility of its being Chinese, and so re-read it from the end to the beginning, but with no more satisfactory result. I was about throwing away in disgust
This folio of four pages, happy work
Which not even critics criticise,
when I felt my attention somewhat aroused by the paragraph which follows:
"The avenues to death are numerous and strange. A London paper mentions the decease of a person from a singular cause. He was playing at 'puff the dart,' which is played with a long needle inserted in some worsted, and blown at a target through a tin tube. He placed the needle at the wrong end of the tube, and drawing his breath strongly to puff the dart forward with force, drew the needle into his throat. It entered the lungs, and in a few days killed him."
Upon seeing this I fell into a great rage, without exactly knowing why. "This thing," I exclaimed, "is a contemptible falsehood--a poor hoax--the lees of the invention of some pitiable penny-a-liner, of some wretched concocter of accidents in Cocaigne. These fellows knowing the extravagant gullibility of the age set their wits to work in the imagination of improbable possibilities, of odd accidents as they term them, but to a reflecting intellect (like mine, I added, in parenthesis, putting my forefinger unconsciously to the side of my nose), to a contemplative understanding such as I myself possess, it seems evident at once that the marvelous increase of late in these 'odd accidents' is by far the oddest accident of all. For my own part, I intend to believe nothing henceforward that has anything of the 'singular' about it."
"Mein Gott, den, vat a vool you bees for dat!" replied one of the most remarkable voices I ever heard. At first I took it for a rumbling in my ears--such as a man sometimes experiences when getting very drunk--but upon second thought, I considered the sound as more nearly resembling that which proceeds from an empty barrel beaten with a big stick; and, in fact, this I should have concluded it to be, but for the articulation of the syllables and words. I am by no means naturally nervous, and the very few glasses of Lafitte which I had sipped served to embolden me a little, so that I felt nothing of trepidation, but merely uplifted my eyes with a leisurely movement and looked carefully around the room for the intruder. I could not, however, perceive any one at all.
"Humph!" resumed the voice as I continued my survey, "you mus pe so dronk as de pig den for not zee me as I zit here at your zide."
Hereupon I bethought me of looking immediately before my nose, and there, sure enough, confronting me at the table sat a personage nondescript, although not altogether indescribable. His body was a wine-pipe or a rum puncheon, or something of that character, and had a truly Falstaffian air. In its nether extremity were inserted two kegs, which seemed to answer all the purposes of legs. For arms there dangled from the upper portion of the carcass two tolerably long bottles with the necks outward for hands. All the head that I saw the monster possessed of was one of those Hessian canteens which resemble a large snuff-box with a hole in the middle of the lid. This canteen (with a funnel on its top like a cavalier cap slouched over the eyes) was set on edge upon the puncheon, with the hole toward myself; and through this hole, which seemed puckered up like the mouth of a very precise old maid, the creature was emitting certain rumbling and grumbling noises which he evidently intended for intelligible talk.
"I zay," said he, "you mos pe dronk as de pig, vor zit dare and not zee me zit ere; and I zay, doo, you mos pe pigger vool as de goose, vor to dispelief vat iz print in de print. 'Tiz de troof--dat it iz--ebery vord ob it."
"Who are you, pray?" said I with much dignity, although somewhat puzzled; "how did you get here? and what is it you are talking about?"
"As vor ow I com'd ere," replied the figure, "dat iz none of your pizziness; and as vor vat I be talking apout, I be talk apout vat I tink proper; and as vor who I be, vy dat is de very ting I com'd here for to let you zee for yourself."
"You are a drunken vagabond," said I, "and I shall ring the bell and order my footman to kick you into the street."
"He! he! he!" said the fellow, "hu! hu! hu! dat you can't do."
"Can't do!" said I, "what do you mean? I can't do what?"
"Ring de pell," he replied, attempting a grin with his little villainous mouth.
Upon this I made an effort to get up in order to put my threat into execution, but the ruffian just reached across the table very deliberately, and hitting me a tap on the forehead with the neck of one of the long bottles, knocked me back into the armchair from which I had half arisen. I was utterly astounded, and for a moment was quite at a loss what to do. In the meantime he continued his talk.
"You zee," said he, "it iz te bess vor zit still; and now you shall know who I pe. Look at me! zee! I am te Angel ov te Odd."
"And odd enough, too," I ventured to reply; "but I was always under the impression that an angel had wings."
"Te wing!" he cried, highly incensed, "vat I pe do mit te wing? Mein Gott! do you take me for a shicken?"
"No--oh, no!" I replied, much alarmed; "you are no chicken--certainly not."
"Well, den, zit still and pehabe yourself, or I'll rap you again mid me vist. It iz te shicken ab te wing, und te owl ab te wing, und te imp ab te wing, und te head-teuffel ab te wing. Te angel ab not te wing, and I am te Angel ov te Odd."
"And your business with me at present is--is----"
"My pizziness!" ejaculated the thing, "vy vat a low-bred puppy you mos pe vor to ask a gentleman und an angel apout his pizziness!"
This language was rather more than I could bear, even from an angel; so, plucking up courage, I seized a salt-cellar which lay within reach, and hurled it at the head of the intruder. Either he dodged, however, or my aim was inaccurate; for all I accomplished was the demolition of the crystal which protected the dial of the clock upon the mantelpiece. As for the Angel, he evinced his sense of my assault by giving me two or three hard, consecutive raps upon the forehead as before. These reduced me at once to submission, and I am almost ashamed to confess that, either through pain or vexation, there came a few tears into my eyes.
"Mein Gott!" said the Angel of the Odd, apparently much softened at my distress; "mein Gott, te man is eder ferry dronk or ferry zorry. You mos not trink it so strong--you mos put te water in te wine. Here, trink dis, like a good veller, and don't gry now--don't!"
Hereupon the Angel of the Odd replenished my goblet (which was about a third full of port) with a colorless fluid that he poured from one of his hand-bottles. I observed that these bottles had labels about their necks, and that these labels were inscribed "Kirschenwaesser."
The considerate kindness of the Angel mollified me in no little measure; and, aided by the water with which he diluted my port more than once, I at length regained sufficient temper to listen to his very extraordinary discourse. I cannot pretend to recount all that he told me, but I gleaned from what he said that he was a genius who presided over the contretemps of mankind, and whose business it was to bring about the odd accidents which are continually astonishing the skeptic. Once or twice, upon my venturing to express my total incredulity in respect to his pretensions, he grew very angry indeed, so that at length I considered it the wiser policy to say nothing at all, and let him have his own way. He talked on, therefore, at great length, while I merely leaned back in my chair with my eyes shut, and amused myself with munching raisins and filiping the stems about the room. But, by and by, the Angel suddenly construed this behavior of mine into contempt. He arose in a terrible passion, slouched his funnel down over his eyes, swore a vast oath, uttered a threat of some character, which I did not precisely comprehend, and finally made me a low bow and departed, wishing me, in the language of the archbishop in "Gil Bias," beaucoup de bonheur et un peu plus de bon sens.
His departure afforded me relief. The very few glasses of Lafitte that I had sipped had the effect of rendering me drowsy, and I felt inclined to take a nap of some fifteen or twenty minutes, as is my custom after dinner. At six I had an appointment of consequence, which it was quite indispensable that I should keep. The policy of insurance for my dwelling-house had expired the day before; and some dispute having arisen it was agreed that, at six, I should meet the board of directors of the company and settle the terms of a renewal. Glancing upward at the clock on the mantelpiece (for I felt too drowsy to take out my watch), I had the pleasure to find that I had still twenty-five minutes to spare. It was half-past five; I could easily walk to the insurance office in five minutes; and my usual siestas had never been known to exceed five-and-twenty. I felt sufficiently safe, therefore, and composed myself to my slumbers forthwith.
Having completed them to my satisfaction, I again looked toward the timepiece, and was half inclined to believe in the possibility of odd accidents when I found that, instead of my ordinary fifteen or twenty minutes, I had been dozing only three; for it still wanted seven-and-twenty of the appointed hour. I betook myself again to my nap, and at length a second time awoke, when, to my utter amazement, it still wanted twenty-seven minutes of six. I jumped up to examine the clock, and found that it had ceased running. My watch informed me that it was half-past seven; and, of course, having slept two hours, I was too late for my appointment. "It will make no difference," I said: "I can call at the office in the morning and apologize; in the meantime what can be the matter with the clock?" Upon examining it I discovered that one of the raisin stems which I had been filiping about the room during the discourse of the Angel of the Odd had flown through the fractured crystal, and lodging, singularly enough, in the keyhole, with an end projecting outward, had thus arrested the revolution of the minute hand.
"Ah!" said I, "I see how it is. This thing speaks for itself. A natural accident, such as will happen now and then!"
I gave the matter no further consideration, and at my usual hour retired to bed. Here, having placed a candle upon a reading stand at the bed head, and having made an attempt to peruse some pages of the Omnipresence of the Deity, I unfortunately fell asleep in less than twenty seconds, leaving the light burning as it was.
My dreams were terrifically disturbed by visions of the Angel of the Odd. Methought he stood at the foot of the couch, drew aside the curtains, and in the hollow, detestable tones of a rum puncheon, menaced me with the bitterest vengeance for the contempt with which I had treated him. He concluded a long harangue by taking off his funnel-cap, inserting the tube into my gullet, and thus deluging me with an ocean of Kirschenwaesser, which he poured in a continuous flood, from one of the long-necked bottles that stood him instead of an arm. My agony was at length insufferable, and I awoke just in time to perceive that a rat had run off with the lighted candle from the stand, but not in season to prevent his making his escape with it through the hole, Very soon a strong, suffocating odor assailed my nostrils; the house, I clearly perceived, was on fire. In a few minutes the blaze broke forth with violence, and in an incredibly brief period the entire building was wrapped in flames. All egress from my chamber, except through a window, was cut off. The crowd, however, quickly procured and raised a long ladder. By means of this I was descending rapidly, and in apparent safety, when a huge hog, about whose rotund stomach, and indeed about whose whole air and physiognomy, there was something which reminded me of the Angel of the Odd--when this hog, I say, which hitherto had been quietly slumbering in the mud, took it suddenly into his head that his left shoulder needed scratching, and could find no more convenient rubbing-post than that afforded by the foot of the ladder. In an instant I was precipitated, and had the misfortune to fracture my arm.
This accident, with the loss of my insurance, and with the more serious loss of my hair, the whole of which had been singed off by the fire, predisposed me to serious impressions, so that finally I made up my mind to take a wife. There was a rich widow disconsolate for the loss of her seventh husband, and to her wounded spirit I offered the balm of my vows. She yielded a reluctant consent to my prayers. I knelt at her feet in gratitude and adoration. She blushed and bowed her luxuriant tresses into close contact with those supplied me temporarily by Grandjean. I know not how the entanglement took place but so it was. I arose with a shining pate, wigless; she in disdain and wrath, half-buried in alien hair. Thus ended my hopes of the widow by an accident which could not have been anticipated, to be sure, but which the natural sequence of events had brought about.
Without despairing, however, I undertook the siege of a less implacable heart. The fates were again propitious for a brief period, but again a trivial incident interfered. Meeting my betrothed in an avenue thronged with the elite of the city, I was hastening to greet her with one of my best considered bows, when a small particle of some foreign matter lodging in the corner of my eye rendered me for the moment completely blind. Before I could recover my sight, the lady of my love had disappeared--irreparably affronted at what she chose to consider my premeditated rudeness in passing her by ungreeted. While I stood bewildered at the suddenness of this accident (which might have happened, nevertheless, to any one under the sun), and while I still continued incapable of sight, I was accosted by the Angel of the Odd, who proffered me his aid with a civility which I had no reason to expect. He examined my disordered eye with much gentleness and skill, informed me that I had a drop in it, and (whatever a "drop" was) took it out, and afforded me relief.
I now considered it high time to die (since fortune had so determined to persecute me), and accordingly made my way to the nearest river. Here, divesting myself of my clothes (for there is no reason why we cannot die as we were born), I threw myself headlong into the current; the sole witness of my fate being a solitary crow that had been seduced into the eating of brandy-saturated corn, and so had staggered away from his fellows. No sooner had I entered the water than this bird took it into his head to fly away with the most indispensable portion of my apparel. Postponing, therefore, for the present, my suicidal design, I just slipped my nether extremities into the sleeves of my coat, and betook myself to a pursuit of the felon with all the nimbleness which the case required and its circumstances would admit. But my evil destiny attended me still. As I ran at full speed, with my nose up in the atmosphere, and intent only upon the purloiner of my property, I suddenly perceived that my feet rested no longer upon terra firma; the fact is, I had thrown myself over a precipice, and should inevitably have been dashed to pieces but for my good fortune in grasping the end of a long guide-rope, which depended from a passing balloon.
As soon as I sufficiently recovered my senses to comprehend the terrific predicament in which I stood, or rather hung, I exerted all the power of my lungs to make that predicament known to the aeronaut overhead. But for a long time I exerted myself in vain. Either the fool could not, or the villain would not perceive me. Meanwhile the machine rapidly soared, while my strength even more rapidly failed. I was soon upon the point of resigning myself to my fate, and dropping quietly into the sea, when my spirits were suddenly revived by hearing a hollow voice from above, which seemed to be lazily humming an opera air. Looking up, I perceived the Angel of the Odd. He was leaning, with his arms folded, over the rim of the car; and with a pipe in his mouth, at which he puffed leisurely, seemed to be upon excellent terms with himself and the universe. I was too much exhausted to speak, so I merely regarded him with an imploring air.
For several minutes, although he looked me full in the face, he said nothing. At length, removing carefully his meerschaum from the right to the left corner of his mouth, he condescended to speak.
"Who pe you," he asked, "und what der teuffel you pe do dare?"
To this piece of impudence, cruelty, and affectation, I could reply only by ejaculating the monosyllable "Help!"
"Elp!" echoed the ruffian, "not I. Dare iz te pottle--elp yourself, und pe tam'd!"
With these words he let fall a heavy bottle of Kirschenwaesser, which, dropping precisely upon the crown of my head, caused me to imagine that my brains were entirely knocked out. Impressed with this idea I was about to relinquish my hold and give up the ghost with a good grace, when I was arrested by the cry of the Angel, who bade me hold on.
"'Old on!" he said: "don't pe in te 'urry--don't. Will you pe take de odder pottle, or 'ave you pe got zober yet, and come to your zenzes?"
I made haste, hereupon, to nod my head twice--once in the negative, meaning thereby that I would prefer not taking the other bottle at present; and once in the affirmative, intending thus to imply that I was sober and had positively come to my senses. By these means I somewhat softened the Angel.
"Und you pelief, ten," he inquired, "at te last? You pelief, ten, in te possibility of te odd?"
