And here it is, the stoner rock album to end all stoner rock albums. It doens't get much heavier or much more epic than this. I mentioned this album briefly in my Om post. As I said, this album was the demise of the band. After getting signed to a major label in the mid 90s, Sleep spent a good two years recording and re-recording this album. Once it was finally finished, it was rejected by the record label. They reworked it and "slimmed" the song down to 53 minutes. It was still rejected. So the band broke up. After nearly 10 years of bootlegs and infamy, the album was finally put out, in it's full one hour and three minute running time. You'd think after that much time the hype would prove more weight than the album can handle, but if there's one thing Dopesmoker has, it's weight. That is to say, this album is fucking heavy. There's some kind of story throughout the album, I've never really listened to the lyrics closely enough. It's something about a journey through Israel to Dope-usalem or something like that. It's got something to do with weed. Anyway, if I hadn't made it clear, this is a legendary album with a legendary history and a legendary sound, get it.
