The mood is gentler and more acoustic; the title track harkens back to the banjo-led introspection of Seven Swans, and the last ballad, "Pittsfield", has the cozy tunefulness of a chicken soup jingle. But for most of the disc, Stevens brings back the statewide namechecks and the "Illinoisemakers" marching band arrangements. "

Both records inadvertently validate East Coast stereotypes of tough Midwestern values: This is earnest, hard-working music, morally rooted and technically precise. The same comment could very well apply to Sufjan Stevens on Michigan and Seven Swans alike: A gifted musician to begin with, Sufjan invites not our religious conversions, but our innate human compassion."

It leads you to wonder how one could craft an album so delicate from an inspiration its author calls a "monstrous concrete prison" which has been "destroyed by its infidelity." Certainly, the album is run through with a wistful melancholia, with lyrics that reference the city's dead machinery and empty warehouses. But there's a reason the album's title greets its listeners from the state and not the city: The record is a beautiful, sprawling homage to the self-described pleasant peninsula."

First and foremost, I'd like to give props to Little Hits blog because if it wasn't for the fact I was exposed to the Bangtails on their site, this post simply would not exist. You can read the write-up as well as download two of the this ep's four songs here (or heck, just download the whole shebang from me). I was able to procure an original copy of the ep shortly after the LH post, and have decided to share it with the world at large.

The Bangtails were from Kansas City. These days, the band is considered to be a minor footnote in the career of Archer Prewitt, whom he served as bass player for. This was the Bangtails one and only release, which is a shame. Sonically, they are awash in chiming jangle pop, straight out of REM 101, circa Chronic Town. The Bengtails were further defined by singer Mike Winston, who's strained-to-the-max croon echoes of Squirrel Bait vocalist Peter Searcy. Though these diametric facets sound seemingly uncomfortable on paper, they actually translate well onto record. For me, this was a very pleasant find. Incidentally, the sleeve was designed by Archer Prewitt, but you can read more about that from the Bangtails link on Little Hits. Light up a stick of patchouli and enjoy.01. Patron of the Arts02. Here is the latest release from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan native Whiteboy Slim titled aka Whiteboy Slim. Slim has produced a set of music that you will either love it or hate it. That is true with much of his music, and the verdict so far has been people love it… If you enjoy lots of original material and a few covers thrown in but performed in a way that makes them his own, you should enjoy this release.
He opens with It Ain’t Art, a neat song written by slim that pokes at the politically correct and out to impress types. Next is another original titled Hey, Hold On Stop. It features some nice harp from Slim and neat lyrics. This is a nice slow shuffle style song. The first of four cover songs is next and is 20% Alcohol written by J.B. Hutto. This song describes an alcoholic woman and the problems her drinking creates. Next is another cover, Too Many Drivers penned by Dave Bartholomew. This is a classic song and receives a slowed new treatment by Slim as he has slowed the tempo of an already slow tune which tends to make it a whole different sound. Blue Murder follows and is another Whiteboy Slim original. It features some neat lyrics and great slide guitar by Slim. Cards On The Table is another original, this was a favorite of mine for the lyrics and music. He offers some nice guitar on this song. Next is I’ve Been Down So Long and was written by Slim. This is a classic blues subject tune. It has some very nice harpwork and a guitar solo that really fit the song well. It’s Strange Out There is another original and couldn’t be more truthful in light of society today. Next is one that has already been very popular with Radio Dj’s and fans I have shared it with, Krispy Kreme Woman. This shuffle has resulted in many comments when I shared it with radio personalities, all positive. Next up is She’s Into Something written by Carl Wright. This song has been covered many times by a whole host of great artists and each has given it a personal touch, Slim is no exception. He has done a fine job on a truly great song. Be Cool Baby is next and is another Slim penned song. He gives a more funky sound on this with an intro on synthesizer. He has employed some neat sound effects to change things up a bit throughout the song. He follows with another original called Tears On My Pillow. I really enjoy this song as it has a beat that just isn’t meant for sitting still. The funniest track he has included is next in You’re Perfect, I Love You, Now Change. The title says it all… He closes with a great old song penned by Taj Mahal called She Caught The Katy And Left Me A Mule To Ride. He has provided a neat musical arrangement for it with song great harmonica to start it off.
Like it or hate it, this is a very solid effort from Whiteboy Slim. He is true to his signature style of pushing the limits of the music he plays. He is no cookie cutter blues artist, as he always manages to come up with a sound all his own whether the music is his or a cover he has chosen.

James Yancy Jones, aka Tail Dragger, was born in Altheimer, AR, in 1940. He was brought up by his grandparents and was influenced as a child by the electric Chicago blues of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, and especially Chester Burnett, the Howlin' Wolf. Jones was a Howlin' Wolf devotee, right down to his deep, gruff voice. After moving to Chicago in the '60s, he began playing with blues legends on the West Side and South Side. It was Howlin' Wolf who gave Jones the title "Tail Dragger" because of his habit of showing up late to gigs.
The blues get served up hard, heavy and raunchy on the debut album from Chicago blues club legend Tail Dragger & His Chicago Blues Band. The 12 tracks here run the gamut from the modal "Don't Trust No Woman," six-and-a-half minutes of a non-stop trance groove, to the nastiest version of "Baby Please Don't Go" you'll ever hear, to the Jimmy Reed groove of "Cold Outdoors." With a straightforward, driving band featuring Studebaker John on harmonica, Rockin' Johnny Burgin on lead guitar, and Twist Turner on drums, a great song selection with seven of the 12 tunes emanating from the pens of either Tail Dragger or producer George Paulus, and an uncluttered production, this is one modern-day blues album that captures the spirit of Chicago blues in its classic period, yet in the here and now. The cover of this CD announces that disc contains "one hour of hardcore juke joint blues." Believe it. Cub Koda, AMG

Recorded live at Buddy Guy`s Legends November 1999 with guests Larry McCray and Sugar Blue.
Vargas is a powerhouse guitarist who also is among the more tasteful players that I have heard. While many of his other recordings show elements of jazz, funk, Latin, and even flamenco, "Last Night" is purely a Chicago blues masterpiece. While Varas' guitar is front and center throughout the recording, so are the incredible vocals of Bobby Alexander, who sounds like he was born to sing Chicago style blues. His voice, like Vargas' guitar, is powerful yet smooth. They are more than capably supported by the first rate bass guitar of Fran Montero, David Lads Sanchez on keyboards, and Jota Marsan on drums. Though Vargas and Alexander are the core, this is very much a team effort and everyone in the band contributes on this great
set.
This CD is spectacular from start to finish and one of the finest live recordings in my collection. The live sound quality is extraordinary and really makes you feel like you are front row center for the show. From the opening notes of the Vargas original "Scratch Me Back", through a great cover of "I Play The Blues For You", on past the band's rendition of Jimmy McGriff's "All About The Girl", and concluding with Vargas' thunderous "Black Cat Boogie", this is a CD that any blues/rock or Chicago blues fan is going to want to own. The CD also comes with an excellent 13 song DVD of the band in concert, which makes this indeed a lot of splendid entertainment for the money

Spencer and Bru break into his HQ and capture notorious drug lord Manuel Santiago of a DEA Agent. Santiago's angered assistant, Mason Lee, takes the school hostage where Kelly is teaching and Jessica is one of the students in attendance in retaliation to Santiago's capture. Alison, knowing a way in, joins Spencer and Bru in the rescue.

An LA detective is murdered because she has microfilm with the recipe to make cocaine cookies. A "Lethal Weapon" style cop team tries to find and stop the fiends before they can dope the nation by distributing their wares via the "Wilderness Girls" cookie drive.

Kansas City in the 1930s: Private investigator Mike Murphy's partner is brutally slayed, when he tries to blackmail a mobster with his secret accounting records. Lieutenant Speer and his ex-colleague Mike Murphy team up again to fight the mob, although they can't stand each other: while Speer is taciturn, Murphy is a prattler.

Eva has just gotten married to an older gentleman, but discovers that he is obsessed with order in his life and doesn't have much room for passion. She becomes despondent and leaves him, returning to her father's house. One day while bathing in the lake she meets a young man and they fall in love. The husband has become grief stricken at the loss of his young bride, and fate brings him together with the young lover that has taken Eva from him.

Outside Lookin' In finds Studebaker John perfecting his overdriven, propulsive Chicago blues. His originals may not always be memorable, but they're sturdy vehicles for his hard-driving harmonica and gutsy guitar. Studebaker hasn't changed his style at all -- essentially, this is the same album he's delivered before, and he made several others like it afterward -- but this is the one that features his best playing.

Aczel explores how a Star Trek-like teleportation may be possible via entanglement (however, a particle's quantum state, not the entire particle, is teleported to its mate), though perhaps at the expense of demonstrating entanglement's more real-world applications to cryptography. General readers may need to skim over his technical explanations, whereas more advanced readers will be interested in only the last third of the book. While the book won't satisfy dedicated science buffs, it will be an accessible entry into this concept of quantum physics.

First issued in 1972 from this highly talented and respected band featuring guitarist Vic Vearget and former Brainticket drummer Cosimo Lampis. This German CD reissue comes in a fold out digi pak with booklet insert. Hard rock with a blues influence, often compared to Spermull.

Swiss hard rock band formed by members of the original Brainticket, Toad's history is obscure and largely undocumented. Their debut is said to be in the realms of Dies Irae, being heavy, bluesy and experimental. However, despite getting a British release, we've never managed to locate a copy. Their second album, "Tomorrow Blue" was surprisingly straight hard-rock, akin to Sperrmüll, with Hendrix, Status Quo and R&B influences. Their original lead singer Benjamin Jäger went on to Island.

In numerous groups, components come from different nations. One of which is often England. Toad together constituted an absolute mixture of genius with one Brit, one Italian and one Swiss man and was also one of the more international groups, having worked all over Europe.

If we want to classify their country of origin as a group, this would have to be Switzerland, where the three met each other many years ago. All things considered, they all came from diverse groups: Cosimo Lampis, the drummer, had come from Brainticket (he was on the album, "Cottonwoodhill"), guitarist Vic Vergeat worked in England where he was also part of the original formation of Hawkwind, from which he separated himself due to musical differences with the band’s leader, Dave Brock, right after they recorded their first album. Added to that pair was bassist Werner Froehlich - in October 1970, during the course of a jam session, in which they had the opportunity to appreciate each other’s skill. Their first concert was in November, while their first album was recorded in December (the press spoke about them as the new Cream

In January, Toad showcased themselves at the International Jazz Festival in Montreux and were booked for the Pop Festival in Palermo in August where they opened for Colosseum during the second evening. Then they recorded a single, "Stay" b/w "Animal's World", which went on to chart, and the three dedicated themselves to creating the new album, "Tomorrow Blue". To present it to the Italian public, Toad played, for the first time in Italy since Palermo, at the Piper in Rome between 11th and 13th February. As I witnessed those concerts, the conditions were definitely not ideal: they came back onto the scene after a recess, and the carnival-esque crowd that had filled the room was more interested in having fun and creating disorder than paying any attention; yet Toad managed to easily maintain the interest of the entire audience - for the entirety of their performance!

The group knows without a doubt that they are, in the final analysis, "old fashioned"; they have modelled themselves on various acts from years past, having found their niche in the bluesy rock popularised and revolutionised with maximum expression by Jimi Hendrix, who they consider to be the most important musician in rock. "Jimi was great as a singer and as a composer, other than being the best guitarist that ever lived. It does not make sense, after him, to define as "progressive" such groups as Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, because, in reality, neither they nor others constitute progress when compared to Hendrix", said guitarist Vic, and it is easy to understand his position. All in all, he is not referring to the great loss of the genre overall, but rather that it is now devoid of personality, not to mention that desperate, exasperated distortion, and instead is filled to the brim with useless virtuosity. Werner, who was not always able to make a significant mark on their records, nevertheless has not been precluded from constructing the necessary background as a soloist in his own right, and has done so with a rare capacity and fantasy: it seems that doing the same thing twice for him is a matter of dishonour, as it is so rarely that he does so. Cosimo, a person who is extremely picturesque, is instead one of those drummers who seldom breaks away from the accompaniment, but his solos were probably the best I have ever heard from any Italian musician, rich in ideas, personality and humour. Toad included tracks from both their albums that were much longer, demonstrating how improvisation was for them an essential element.

"We are different from those who prepare the parts for every instrument in anticipation and don't allow any possible variation, or those groups on the German scene who trust the inspiration of the moment totally for the duration of a concert." They further explain, "We know how to improvise, but it is necessary to hold yourself within certain pre-established schemes." All of the live pieces were extremely raw and much more loaded with feeling than those on the records. Other than the obvious scenic presence, I thought that it would depend on a certain, precise availability of the trio, which they’ve confirmed to me. "We believe that the technique is fundamental to an album, so much so that we recorded in London, at the infamous studio, De Lane Lea, with the same engineer as Deep Purple and Donovan, Martin Birch. To the contrary, live, the feeling is essential; if in the studio the two elements contribute 50%, live they can contribute up to 90%."

Vic then explained to me that on the first album, they’ve also included a singer named Benj Jäger, but that the group’s tendency towards long jams while playing live left less and less space for singing. For this, they decided to return to their original trio format. "It is incredible how much a singer can characterize a formation, and this is because the voice is the first thing to hit the listener. Try to switch the singers in Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath for example. Their music would change totally, while I don't believe that if you swapped lommi for Page you would find the same effect. We don't want to imitate anyone", says Cosimo. "And, regardless, our vocal parts are pretty limited. For this, we immediately returned to a trio." Without a doubt, “Tomorrow Blue" constitutes a tangible progress: abandoned are the scholastic blues lines of "They Say I'm Mad" and the Deep Purple themes like "A Life That Ain't Worth Living", the trio having instead developed an approach more precise and valid, of which the best examples are the opening, "Thoughts", and the long "Change In Time", on which they present often truly epic moments. "No Need", which makes up the b-side of their new single, "Fly", is one of those fast and aggressive tracks with a work that is frenetic in solos, which masters like Led Zeppelin are known for in such number as "Communication Breakdown" and "Living Loving Maid". Amazing, too, is the phrasing of Vic. A lot of space is left for the acoustic guitar, often presented together with the soloist, and obviously completing the sound. Everything was penned by Vergeat and Froehlich, with the exception of the two tracks that move away from the prevalent motif, "Three O'Clock In The Morning" - a brief but conclusive piano solo by the guitarist, and "Blind Chapman's Tale", which calls for a particular note. "I Racconti Del Venditore Cieco" features a guitar-violin dialogue, but not an electric one like Gentle Giant or PFM, to name two other groups that have recently played Rome. Dreamy tones and slightly bitter vocals tint the track vaguely similarly to the sweet’n’sour flavour of Genesis. Toad opens up a prospect that will be very interesting in the future. As always, we talk about the need for the band to bring together various directions undertaken by them thus far and liberate themselves as much as possible from the influences of the more commercial aspects of rock. Contrary to the inferred feeling of the title "Tomorrow Blue", the group actually project a strong hope and trust in their musical genre's future. It seems appropriate to conclude with a quote by a noted English journalist who wrote, having listened to the album, "This music will not die, ever!"

F1 Challenge begins humbly, with a simple interface sporting a simple request to login with your chosen player ID. It then expands exponentially from there. Once you've entered your ID, which, thankfully, allows you to race as yourself rather than one of the game's 34 real-life F1 pilots, you have a big decision to make. Namely, you have to decide which of the last four seasons, excluding 2007, you wish to enter. To the uneducated driver, four separate seasons each with many of the same venues and many of the same drivers, teams and cars would mean very little. But the seasoned pro knows differently. Image Space has done a nice job in this respect, developing a unique set of parameters for each year. If a circuit has been altered, dropped, or added in the real world during those years (Hello, Indianapolis!), such changes are reflected in the game. The new “X2” gives enthusiast digital photographers an entirely new set of tools to unlock their creative potential. Packed with applications for downloading, viewing, sorting, and editing/processing images, is X2 a digital photographer’s dream come true or worst nightmare?

Corel promises in their advertisements that X2 is an easy-to-use, powerful image editor at an affordable price. Retailing for just $99 or less, X2 is certainly a viable option for consumers who are also considering products from Adobe. What sets X2 apart from the competition is a wide array of old and new features (some of which are unique to Corel).

Below is an overview and review of some of the new and existing features in X2 along with sample images to illustrate the pros and cons of this exciting application.

Compatibility with Photoshop Plug-ins

An excellent feature in Corel's Paint Shop Pro Photo series that doesn't get much attention is compatibility with “most” Photoshop plug-ins and filters. Many creative plug-in filters such as those from Nik Software or Imagenomic are 100 percent compatible with X2 ... so you can use many of the same creative tools used in Adobe Photoshop. However, not all plug-ins are fully compatible with X2 ... and X2 cannot use Photoshop Actions or Scripts. Bottom line, check with the plug-in manufacturer to confirm X2 compatibility.

Minimum System Requirements

Corel lists some pretty standard minimum requirements in order to run X2. That said, even though you don’t “need” a newer computer to run this software you may want to consider an upgrade after you read our speed comparison section later in this review. The minimum system requirements are:

I believe there may be a thrash band or something else with the same name. Also, a 1950's CIA mind control project.

This was John Vanderslice's band, before he started putting out solo records. They put out 3 albums, and had a pretty rabid fan base, but then one of the members decided he was done, and the rest elected to end the band, instead of replacing him. This album was reviewed extremely favorably. Pitchfork, in the wake of the hysteria caused by Radiohead's "Ok Computer" went so far as to call mkU "the American Radiohead."

Most of mkU's music sounds a lot like it could be one of John's solo albums. So basically, if you like John Vanderslice, you should love this album. If you aren't really a John Vanderslic fan, probably stay away, although, maybe the slightly more full band vibe will make you appreciate this record. Probably not.

If anyone wants Pixel Revolt by John Vanderslice, bitch to audiophile about it, she's had it sitting in the drafts since I started contributing in early December.

Restriction enzymes are highly specific nucleases which occur ubiquitously among prokaryotic organisms, where they serve to protect bacterial cells against foreign DNA. The two consecutively paged volumes contain approximately 400 signed, alphabetical entries. The authors are health-care professionals and medical writers. The articles cover diseases (Batten disease, Rasmussen's encephalitis); syndromes (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Tourette syndrome); drugs (Antimigraine medications, Valporic acid and divalproex sodium); treatments (Acupuncture, Radiation); therapies (Craniotomy, Bodywork therapies); and diagnostic equipment and devices (Electronic personal assistive mobility devices, CT scan). There are also entries for anatomical and physiological topics such as Cerebral circulation and common symptoms such as dizziness.

The articles are one to four pages long. All have shaded boxes with definitions of key terms and resource lists, and many have color illustrations. An alphabetical list of all articles appears at the beginning of each volume. The lack of see references in this list and in the text is a minor inconvenience. There is a glossary at the end of volume 2. The reading level is fairly high, so public and consumer health collections will also need resources at a lower literacy level.

There is some duplication and overlap with other Gale medical encyclopedias. The article Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is identical to that in The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (1999). Some material from The Gale Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders (2002) appears here because of the role of neurotransmitters in mental illness. Since many genetic diseases affect the nervous system, there is some overlap with The Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders (2001) also. The article on Canavan disease is almost identical. Nevertheless, most public and consumer health libraries will want The Gale Encyclopedia of Neurological Disorders because of its focus on complex conditions that are not well covered in other lay medical encyclopedias.
