Dr. Dobkin has been involved in the development, manufacturing, and marketing of communications devices, components, and systems for 28 years. He holds a BS from the California Institute of Technology, and MS and PhD degrees from Stanford University, all in Applied Physics. He is the author of two books and about 30 technical publications, and holds 7 US patents as inventor or co-inventor. He has given numerous talks and classes on radio-frequency identification in the US and Asia. He specializes in physical-layer issues: radios and signal generation, antennas, and signal propagation. Dr. Dobkin lives in Sunnyvale, CA, with his wife, Nina, children Nicholas and Amelia, and entirely too many toys and video game consoles.

improper terminology and so many errors1
There are so many errors at each chapter, so I can not follow up the contents. The author uses improper engineering nomenclatures.
But entire contents of this book satisfys me minimally.
The person who wants to buy this book should wait for s revised edition.

The RF in RFID, Daniel M. Dobkin5

The RF in RFID is the best book for a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental issues of UHF RFID. In this very readable book, hardware and software engineers and users of UHF RFID systems will find reliable information on the RF interaction of tags and readers and UHF RFID protocols (it promotes mental health by providing the reader with a lucid explanation of the very dense UHF RFID protocols). This is a book that must be included in a comprehensive technical library (Five Stars).

Awesome, accessible, and technical5
If you have even a modest background in electrical engineering, Dobkins will take you on an entertaining but extremely informative ride into the engineering world that goes on behind RFID. Dobkins avoids the classical, boring, textbook-like approach that wants to turn everything into an abstract mathematical equation. Instead, he uses analogies, intuition, illustrations, animations, and yes, equations, to guide the reader's thought process and imagination. It's filled with fun facts and practical perspectives. It seems like every few pages I want to say out loud, "Wow, that's cool!"

The author's enthusiasm for the subject clearly comes across right from the introduction. Though the sentences may ramble, it us usually punctuated by some wit, humor, or factoid.

This book cuts across a lot of different topics, but primarily focuses on tags and readers. No topic goes too deep; nobody should confuse this with a PhD dissertation. But no topic is glossed over lightly, either. While this is not a "cook book" by any means, it definitely lays the foundation solidly on each topic.

What I enjoy so much about this book is that it is both technically solid, but still so easy to read. It's not "dumbed down" as it addresses the real engineering challenges head on, and leaves you with both an appreciation for the subject and a solid foundation (and lots of references) to go digging for more.

As inevitably happens, when trying to reduce something that is full of complexities and try to make it into something simpler, sometimes some important details get lost in the process. This is inevitable, and is not a problem per se. However, sometimes Dobkins gets carried away and forgets to remind the reader that the real world is actually a little bit more complicated than is presented. For example, the process of designing an RFID tag antenna, as outlined, doesn't quite work. Adding a matching circuit to the antenna, especially the inductive shunt, significantly changes behavior of the antenna, and means you have to go back and change the equivalent circuit of the antenna. Once you get past that, the basic process of modifying the matching circuit based on the principles outlined in the book does work. There are also a number of very minor errors within the book. Neither criticism is enough to detract from my 5-star rating.

Anyone who works with passive UHF RFID and wants to learn more about how this stuff works will definitely learn a lot from this book. If you've been to all the conferences, workshops, short courses, and looking for something more, this book is for you.

Great Basic Book on ESX4
This book was useful both as a reference book to look up individual topics (I used it that way specifically for storage and network information) and to read as a guide/introduction to ESX. The author has a very in depth knowledge of the environment and the options available to anyone implementing the technology. It is laid out logically so that you can get the information you need subject (chapter) by subject.

I would say that the main drawback to the book is that sometimes it felt like I got right up the more advanced information that I was looking for and was informed that the options are available but had limited information to guide you in using/configuring or best practices for even choosing some of the more advanced settings.

I think overall this is an extremely useful book for someone just entering the ESX world, and for users who have not already been immersed in an ESX environment. Even for those people who are more advanced with the product it is a good added resource but may not fill all of your needs for more advanced features.

An excellent real-world guide5
VMWARE ESX SERVER IN THE ENTERPRISE: PLANNING AND SECURING VIRTUALIZATION SERVERS is an excellent real-world guide to planning and managing modern virtual infrastructure platforms, and is a pick for college-level libraries strong in computer networking studies. Many techniques and practices seemingly unique to the ESX server system apply to all current virtualization platforms, not just ESX - which lends this title value beyond its apparent specialty focus.

Excellent primer for integration 4
If you are looking at implementing virtualization in your hosting facility, I think the book is worth it's weight in gold. It discusses issues that every integrator is going to run into during requirement gathering, concept, design and implementation of projects involving client server architecture. This is a very hot topic which seems to be focus of every organization, and this books gives you the tools you need to discuss related issue intelligently. I would recommend it.

About the Author

Grady Booch is an IBM fellow and author of six best-selling books on object-oriented programming. He is world-reknowned as an originator of OO and founder of UML.

Robert A. Maksimchuk, as Research Director in the Unisys CTO Office, focuses on emerging modeling technologies to advance the strategic direction of the Unisys 3D-Visual Enterprise modeling framework. Too many words3
This book's reputation as one of the bibles of OOAD is probably deserved because (to someone relatively new to it) the essentials seem to be thoroughly covered. It just seems too much like wading through muck to find them.

The problem begins at the very beginning; on the first pages of the preface. In describing changes between publication of the second edition and this third edition, the author lists "robots are cruising on the surface of Mars" and "Personal hovercraft are available." Tongue-in-cheek?

Unfortunately, no, unless it's firmly planted there. As the book continues, the reader all too often wants to start skimming as paragraph after paragraph, sometimes page after page, of non-essential prattle clouds the essentials. For journeyman designers and developers, sections on the topology of old-fashioned procedural languages, on the importance of documentation, task planning, release planning (twice!) and more may be frustrating drags on learning the essentials of thinking through a good design and taking it to the doorstep of implementation.

A highly-simplified greenhouse application is used for examples throughout the first part of the book, leaving too many more-common scenarios unexplored and occasionally trapping skimmers who have not captured every concept in the design of that application along the way.

Late chapters illustrate some concepts with (finally!) other applications including an all-important (for many of us) web application as well as applications for satellite tracking, data aquisition for a weather station, artificial intelligence, and a control system for traffic management. Interesting, but again wordy and by the time you get there you're exhausted!

I did learn from this book, but I'm still looking for The Book that efficiently teaches OOAD, and I've read four or five already. So far I've learned more from a couple of implementation-level books: Martin Fowler's superb book Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code, and his UML Distilled. These have been very instructive in part because Fowler's style is lean and very clear, un-clouded by distracting non-essentials. I've just ordered Applying UML and Patterns: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Analysis and Design and Iterative Development by Craig Larman. Fingers are crossed, maybe that will be The Book.

Nothings perfect. Irrespective, this should be on every OO programmers bookshelf.5
I have read few software engineering books that have been perfect. Some of this book is not perfect. The wisdom in the text, in the white space and beyond, is priceless. It is important to consider that Robert Martin, whose books on the theory and art of object oriented software development, amongst other subjects, are immense. Robert worked with Booch, and his greatness stands on the shoulders of Booch. You may not get everything from a first read of this book, and thats the beauty - it distills so many ideas in some many ways, that every time you read it, you get to share in the vision and deeper ideas behind the concepts.

This will always have a space on my shelf.

Quite simply, a 'most have' for any serious collection.5
