Product Description

This second edition is not only a thorough update of the first edition, it is also a marriage of the best-known RISC architecture--MIPS--with the best-known open-source OS--Linux. The first part of the book begins with MIPS design principles and then describes the MIPS instruction set and programmers' resources. It uses the MIPS32 standard as a baseline (the 1st edition used the R3000) from which to compare all other versions of the architecture and assumes that MIPS64 is the main option. The second part is a significant change from the first edition. It provides concrete examples of operating system low level code, by using Linux as the example operating system. It describes how Linux is built on the foundations the MIPS hardware provides and summarizes the Linux application environment, describing the libraries, kernel device-drivers and CPU-specific code. It then digs deep into application code and library support, protection and memory management, interrupts in the Linux kernel and multiprocessor Linux.

Sweetman has revised his best-selling MIPS bible for MIPS programmers, embedded systems designers, developers and programmers, who need an in-depth understanding of the MIPS architecture and specific guidance for writing software for MIPS-based systems, which are increasingly Linux-based.

* Completely new material offers the best explanation available on how Linux runs on real hardware.

* Provides a complete, updated and easy-to-use guide to the MIPS instruction set using the MIPS32 standard as the baseline architecture with the MIPS64 as the main option.

* Retains the same engaging writing style that made the first edition so readable, reflecting the authors 20+ years experience in designing systems based on the MIPS architecture.

This book is a worhtwhile read for anyone interested in Linux on MIPS processors or even MIPS and RISC architecture in general.- James Mohr, Linux Magazine, April 2007

About the Author

Dominic Sweetman is a member of the last generation of programmers who could reasonably hope to understand computer systems from bottom to top. His rich career began with low-level coding, progressing from OS development to LANs to distributed systems. Dominic is an experienced designer and developer of hardware systems, CPUs, networks, and operating systems. He was a founder member of Whitechapel Workstations, and in 1988 founded Algorithmics, a MIPS consulting firm of which he is the director. Dominic lives with his partner, two grown-up children and three cats in north London.

Customer Reviews

Lived up to the reviews (Excellent)5
As a developer of a MIPS softcore (YARI, an FPGA implementation), I find this book to be an excellent reference and highly readable. While it doesn't cover 100% of the intricate details, it comes remarkable close.

Since the long and intricate history of the many many revisions of the MIPS architecture can be hard to follow, I was very excited to find a comprehensible account of this and many of the reasons why.

The writing style is engaging and light - remarkable for a topic that easily comes out dry.

Great Introduction to using MIPS5
I'm just getting started on a project involving embedded MIPS systems, and this book has been very helpful in easing my way into this new world. Very well written, and it assumes the right level of knowledge. Not so basic that it explains every concept of architecture design, but not so advanced that it requires any previous experience.

I highly recommend this for getting your feet wet with MIPS programming.

The first comprehensive book on software test and analysis

You can't "test quality into" a software product, but neither can you build a quality software product without test and analysis. Software test and analysis is increasingly recognized, in research and in industrial practice, as a core challenge in software engineering and computer science. Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques is the first book to present a range of complementary software test and analysis techniques in an integrated, coherent fashion. It covers a full spectrum of topics from basic principles and underlying theory to organizational and process issues in real-world application. The emphasis throughout is on selecting a complementary set of practical techniques to achieve an acceptable level of quality at an acceptable cost.

Highlights of the book include
* Interplay among technical and non-technical issues in crafting an approach to software quality, with chapters devoted to planning and monitoring the software quality process.
* A selection of practical techniques ranging from inspection to automated program and design analyses to unit, integration, system, and regression testing, with technical material set in the context of real-world problems and constraints in software development.
* A coherent view of the state of the art and practice, with technical and organizational approaches to push the state of practice toward the state of the art.

Throughout, the text covers techniques that are suitable for near-term application, with sufficient technical background to help you know how and when to apply them. Exercises reinforce the instruction and ensure that you master each topic before proceeding.

By incorporating software testing and analysis techniques into modern practice, Software Testing and Analysis: Process, Principles, and Techniques provides both students and professionals with realistic strategies for reliable and cost-effective software development.

Excellent Book for a course on Software Testing 5
There are number of excellent features in this book which makes it an ideal book for a course on Software Testing/Analysis.

Unlike many other books it covers a good mix of theory and practical issues. The list of topics covered are broad. The topics are also presented in coherent systematic manner throughout the book.

Unlike many other existing texts this book is appropriate for a postgraduate level course, covering many topics at a greater depth. The open research issues presented at the end of each chapter presents many interesting ideas for students wanting to undertake research.

It can also be used as a text for computer science/IT undergraduate students, in their final year of their programs. The right level of formalism is used/introduced making it applicable for a wide range of audience.

It also includes a good set of tutorial questions and slides reducing the effort required for staff teaching Software Testing for the first time.

Grid computing is widely regarded as a technology of immense potential in both industry and academia. Yet many enterprises are still hesitant about the implementation of an enterprise-level grid system, due to the lack of consistent and widely used standards. Security is probably the most important concern and needs both close understanding and careful implementation as grid computing offers unique security challenges.

Based on his research and industry experience, Chakrabarti has structured the issues pertaining to grid computing security into three main categories: architecture-related, infrastructure-related, and management-related issues. He discusses all three categories in detail, presents existing solutions, standards, and products, and pinpoints their shortcomings and open questions.

Together with a brief introduction into grid computing in general and underlying security technologies, this book offers the first concise and detailed introduction to this important area, targeting professionals in the grid industry as well as students specializing in grid computing, networking, peer-to-peer systems, or operating systems. It can also be used as the basis for a self-contained course on grid computing security, complementing the author’s tutorials at grid conferences.

Review

From the reviews:

"This survey of distributed system security, with applications for the grid security infrastructure, begins with an overview of grid computing, security and the Global Grid Forum’s (GGS) grid security infrastructure (GSI). … The book is well organized; the material is accompanied by both motivational material … as well as potential solutions. I also appreciate the inclusion of copious description of existing implementations … . This gives the reader an idea of what is available, and how to elucidate how these systems relate to each other." (W. Hu, Computing Reviews, December, 2007)

Roomba mods unleashed4
Great book, I would suggest getting more than one roomba so you can mod one and still vac the floors. Top fun, all good info in one book, Yes you can get most of the info online but I think its better to have the directions at hand when halfway through a mod instead of rushing to look it up again link after link

So far, so good...5
I've only gotten into chapter 3, with a few peeks in the back, but so far this book has lived up to my expectations and more. It has all sorts of basic information for people who haven't had much experience with tinkering with electronics. There's also plenty of reassuring and cautionary information for those concerned that their attempts to play with or improve their Roomba will break it instead. I'm looking forward to trying the experiments -- the book will be worth reading even if I never get around to them, though.

A must have5
I received a "Rootooth" adapter as a Christmas present so I bought this book to expand on hacking Roomba. It is very detailed and easy to follow. The book assumes that you have some basic programming knowledge (i.e. MS VB, MS C#, MS C++, Java)to get the most out of it. You need to know how to compile and execute Java code to do the experiments in this book. It has some cool experiments and a lot of references to downloads for any utlities you will need to hack Roomba. I would highly recommend "Hacking Roomba" as a must have.

Product Description

Crack in America is the definitive book on crack cocaine. In reinterpreting the crack story, it offers new understandings of both drug addiction and drug prohibition. It shows how crack use arose in the face of growing unemployment, poverty, racism, and shrinking social services. It places crack in its historical context--as the latest in a long line of demonized drugs--and it examines the crack scare as a phenomenon in its own right. Most important, it uses crack and the crack scare as windows onto America's larger drug and drug policy problems.
Written by a team of veteran drug researchers in medicine, law, and the social sciences, this book provides the most comprehensive, penetrating, and original analysis of the crack problem to date. It reviews the social pharmacology of crack and offers rich ethnographic case studies of crack binging, addiction, and sales. It explores crack's different impacts on whites, blacks, the middle class, and the poor, and explains why crack was always much less of a problem in other countries such as Canada, Australia, and The Netherlands.
Crack in America helps readers understand why the United States has the most repressive, expensive, and yet least effective drug policy in the Western world. It discusses the ways politicians and the media generated the crack scare as the centerpiece of the War on Drugs. It catalogues the costs of the War on Drugs for civil liberties, situates crack use and sales in the political economy of the inner cities in the 1980s, and shows how the drug war led to the most massive wave of imprisonment in U.S. history. Finally, it explains why the failures of drug prohibition have led to the emergence of the harm reduction movement and other opposition forces that are changing the face of U.S. drug policy.

Editorial Reviews

Review
Those with an aversion to academic tomes should not be put off by this book's citations and tables or by the weighty prose of a few of the contributors. Many of the articles are very readable, even absorbing.... -- The Nation, Jo Ann Kawell

From the Inside Flap
"The editors and authors have produced an important work in the ongoing debate about the effect and efficacy of U.S. drug policy. Authoritative in its analysis and comprehensive in its embrace, this work will contribute importantly to the policy debate. A must-read for anybody concerned about developing a strategy to improve the health and well-being of our communities."--Ronald Dellums, Member of Congress

"Crack in America is a devastating, sad, angry, though always scholarly book about the many failures of our national drug policy. The contributors make a convincing case that America is unable to solve the problems associated with crack because it is unwilling to deal with extreme economic and racial inequality except by stigmatizing and punishing the unequal. The book is of urgent importance--a powerfully persuasive and illuminating inquiry about America. I wish it could be required reading for the White House and all the agencies responsible for the country's drug problems."--Herbert J. Gans, Columbia University

"Indispensable for understanding the real roots of hard drug abuse in America's inner cities. It shows brilliantly how our drug policies have made our drug problem worse and points the way out of the drug war morass. A passionate and ultimately hopeful book."--Kurt Schmoke, Mayor of Baltimore

"Crack in America accurately and forcefully examines in detail the myth and the reality of crack. It is a must-read for any American concerned about drugs in our society and for any reader valuing honesty and scholarship compellingly presented."--Robert W. Sweet, U.S. District Judge

"A penetrating analysis by a variety of scholars which explodes many of the government propagated myths regarding crack cocaine."--Joseph D. McNamara, Stanford University

"Reinarman, Levine and their colleagues bring a keen sociological sensibility to their analysis of our contemporary moral panic. These essays make clear that crack policy is more the problem than the so-called crack epidemic. And they go on to disentangle the intricate ways in which American culture and economy, and particularly our racism, classicism and sexism, are implicated both in the use of crack and its repression."--Frances Fox Piven, Dept. of Political Science, CUNY Graduate Center

"Scholarly, lucid, and readable. . .the most original and thoughtful analysis of the American crack panic. The contributors demonstrate compellingly the relationship between social justice and public health."--Lester Grinspoon, M.D., Harvard Medical School

"An immensely rich book and an extraordinary source of information. . . . Since crack is not only America's but the world's latest demon drug, and since rational alternatives to repression are at the order of the day the world over, the book is indispensable reading for concerned students, scholars, politicians, and citizens everywhere."--Henner Hess, Goethe-Universitat (Frankfurt, Germany)

This book is great5
I'm telling you this book is really enlightening and shocking. You won't find a better laid argument against our nation's drug policies. Must Read!

The book is well-written, clear-sighted and informative5
In Crack in America, Reinerman and Levine have brought together a wealth of facts and expertise. The authors' chapters are well-written, and hardhitting. Their arguments are carefully composed, and the authors present sensible alternative models. The editors and their contributors have obviously spent time and effort researching the medical, legal and social components of drugs in America and elsewhere. Reinerman, Levine, and their contributors - Loren Siegel and Ira Glasser from the ACLU, Troy Duster, Ethan Nadelman from the Lindesmith Center, Marsha Rosenbaum and Sheigla Murphy, et al, are informed by a sense of social context - the issues of class, race, the economy and popular culture. They are sharp-minded thinkers and writers, who obviously should be involved in the creation of our nation's drug policies. The answers aren't easy, but if we are going to start anywhere we first need to ask the right questions. Levine's and Reinman's book poses substantial questions and issues that must be addressed if we plan to be a more inclusive society, and not a culture that marginalizes and demonizes people in trouble.

Very good book with many practical examples4
I am a BIG fan of Wendy Enelow. She has a deep knowledge of resume writing and this particular book gives many good examples of styles and formats that are appropriate for the $100,000+ per year job seekers.

While this book is short on specific instructions, it illustrates important points through well chosen examples. I think the assumption here is that anyone looking for a $100,000+ year job already has pretty good resume writing skills.

I agree with the other review that there are more in-depth studies of how to put together an executive resume. However, given the size of the sale one is trying to land in this market, it probably pays to have a number of texts on the subject and take away the best from each.

Wendy Enelow has also written many other books on resume writing that emphasize different markets, skills and situations. I haven't seen one of her books that haven't been valuable in this important area. In fact, I recommend her books the most to my own clients who are in the process of doing career transitions.

This is a great book5
This is the best resume book I have ever seen. Perhaps the best feedback I have about this book is when I was job hunting last time, during interviews, people commented on how well my resume was formatted. What more do you want?

In fact, I have passed it on to friends and colleagues. The reason that I found it so helpful is the way the author formats resumes. I would agree with the previous review that there is no indepth discussion of every section of a resume, but there is clearly enough to get the basic idea -- which is all you need.

I bought this book a few years ago when I was job hunting and thought it was the best one in the bookstore. Because I am rewritting my resume again, I went to a bookstore and looked at all the resume books again and thought that this was the best book one the shelf.

I highly recommend it.

Great title, no substance.2
The book's title is one that gets your attention but the commentary regarding resume writting is novice at best. I suggest you buy Asher's Bible of Executive Resumes if you want an in depth discussion and candid breakdown of the resume writting process. The only redeeming quality of this book is it has alot of examples.

A Good Read!4
If you're just beginning your career or if you're stalled and wondering why you're not progressing up the ladder, you will find David E. Rye's basic book quite useful. His credo: Use self-promotion to attain professional promotion. Don't be misled by the gimmicky title. This is not a list of 1,00l ways to land that promotion. Instead, Rye builds his book around seven strategies that let everyone know you are management material. We [...] like one thing in particular - at pivotal points in each chapter, Rye recommends books that will take you further into the particular subject that chapter covers. This is a great idea, and more business books should refer onward this way. So, if you're just starting out or if you need a boost up the corporate ranks, this book will tell you how to climb, or at least tell you where to go to find out what you need to know.

Nice idea, but where is the delivery ?3
I read about a third of the book before giving up. I found it to be useful from the point of view of identifying and rating ones own skills, but it then went on about powerplays in the workplace. While this is an essential part of promotions, it is not a good long term strategy if the principle one wants to adopt is to be promoted on merit.

The book (or at least what I read) lacked any discussion on exercising the brain so that one can improve their methodology. Doing this would help one improve the quality of their work, and then achieve their promotional goals. Its just a different way of getting there but in a way that promotes ones confidence in their own work.

The overall theme of the book was to offer self improvement in many key areas, but it seemed to focus on how to respond to situations, not how to create them. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I should finish reading it.

A Great Book - One of a Kind5
In the work place, we all know that we are good and believe that is all that it takes to get ourselves promoted, automatically. Mr. Rye does an excellent job of pointing out that this may not happen unless you take action to promote yourself every day. He gives you well over 1,001 ways to do that. I use it as a daily reference book and it has already helped me get the promotion that I have always wanted. I'm already working on my next promotion, thanks to Mr. Rye's advice.

Customer Reviews

A "must have" for professionals.5
With all of the advances the age of technology has brought us, there have also been a few setbacks. One of those setbacks comes in the form of a lack of professionalism in writing. The email era has all but eliminated professionalism in business communications. POWER SALES WRITING by Sue Hershkowitz-Coore seeks to restore some of that lost professionalism. What we have here, however, is not just about improving the level of professionalism in email, but is applicable to all realms of business writing.

The author begins by introducing four questions that are basic components of all business writing. The professional writer should always begin their prewriting with these four basic questions. Doing so will insure the writer always achieves the desired result. There is an incredible amount of information on such a wide variety of writing tips, such as proofing, when and how to use buffers, and legal culpability in business communications.

The book seems to be aimed at a general audience (anyone who conducts business communication) as well as a specific audience, (copywriters). The content here is beneficial for both audiences and, I believe, meets reader expectations of either group. The last half of the book does slant more towards the professional copywriter, but can still be applied to general business communications.

In the last half of the book we find direction on sales letters. Here, the focus is on such things as sales letter characteristics, the power of testimony and using stimuli words (visual, auditory and kinesthetic) to appeal to various learning styles.

The final section really helps the reader to challenge him or herself from writing habits found less than admirable. This is somewhat of a melding together and condensed version of Richard Bayan's "Words That Sell" and Strunk's "Elements of Style". Of particular note, I found on the final page of text, a technique I have used for years. That is making a list of the ten most important things learned from the book, picking a couple to focus on for a month, then moving to the next two. The problem here is, for me, it was difficult holding my list down to ten items.

This is a critical edition for professional copywriters. It is beneficial for all professionals who must use written communication. I found the book exceptionally well written. Hershkowitz-Coore's obvious skill as a writer makes the book very easy to comprehend.

Power is an UNDERSTATEMENT!5
Competition is fierce and having the best marketing department or newest product is not good enough. All successful Sales professionals possess skills that set them apart from their competitors and effective writing should be at the top of their skill set. In her new book, Power Sales Writing, Sue provides the tools that will inspire the reader to develop or enhance their writing effectiveness and ultimately set them apart from the competition. Power Sales Writing has a prominent position on my bookshelf - a must read!

OK Book; Not Great3
I must say I am little disappointed. I would not tell someone not to buy this book but I would not tell someone to buy it. The book does deliver what it says on the cover. I am not so sure how powerful it is. It is about writing style and how to make it better, easier and faster. I am still trying to decide if I learned anything from this book that is of great value. I am sure I will reference this book in the future and for $10.00; hay what the hell. I have bought computer books for ten times that amount that I hated. If you have difficulty writing and getting your ideas on to paper maybe this book is for you. It is short and it is very readable. I would classify this as an average book. And sorry Sue since my name is not on this I just pounded it out on the keyboard and let the letters fall where they may.
