Great Book to Jump-in With4
I wrote a couple of sidebars for this book and enjoyed reading it when I received my copy. If you're looking for a book to give you a good picture of the Windows Server 2008 AD landscape including the various services which have been branded as part of AD (e.g. Certificate Services, Rights Management, etc), this is a good title to pick-up. There are plenty of screenshots and procedural walkthroughs as well as advice from the standpoint of Microsoft. If you're looking for something super detailed and in-depth, this may not be what you're looking for.

Insightful and Useful5
Rommel's book is filled with useful information, presented in an easily accessible format, that could be critical to a business at the worst possible time...highly recommended.
Packed with usable information4
In "Active Directory Disaster Recovery" Author Florian Rommel has created very readable, and usable title devoted to one of the least understood aspects of Microsoft's Active Directory technology. In a familiar and easily readable style, Mr. Rommel presents aspects of a widely used technology that is all to often overlooked even in large companies with competent staff.
Full of practical information and solutions to what can sometimes be very esoteric and difficult to understand concepts you will find yourself returning multiple times to this book to refresh your memory before planning for and testing your disaster recovery plans.
With active directory digging deeper and deeper everyday into the core of every business and data center, this is the information you need to know in order to assure the long term viability of your infrastructure.
Lots of seasoning required...3
A good topic for a book, and this one promises a lot, but read it with at least a few grains of salt while you test, test, test. I'm unsure how this book made it past the editorial reviewers, as the prose is often awkward and dense, with many unnecessary words and rarely flows. The often informal and inexact sentence structure loses the reader when the author attempts to describe more complicated concepts.
The book's first 100 pages are spent going briefly through AD basics (which leaves something to be desired) and making a case for a business continuity plan for AD. I feel the latter is completely unnecessary. I think it would be safe to assume the reader already knows the importance of a disaster recovery plan if they've bothered reading this book in the first place.
There is one glaring conceptual mistake in the book that I cannot let pass concerning sites and services, especially after the author makes statement: "This is the section where a lot of administrators get confused and it is also the section that, if poorly implemented, can cause extremely high network traffic generated by excessive replication."
Unfortunately the author seems to be one of these administrators as he writes on page 86 about setting site replication schedules that:
"The schedule per site actually only allows you to specify how many times per hour and during which window the replications can occur from the site. This does not affect the intra-site replications, which is the replication between the DCs located in the same site."
The section continues with screen shots and text describing how the NTDS Site Settings object under each site affects the way intersite replication takes place. This is completely wrong, as described by Microsoft (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755994.aspx):
"Intrasite connections inherit a default schedule from the schedule attribute of the NTDS Site Settings object. By default, this schedule is always available and has an interval of one hour."
By default, intrasite replication happens whenever there are changes, or if there haven't been any in a period of an hour, it will replicate once anyway. Intrasite replication is what the schedule on the NTDS Site Settings object controls.

broad and deep, but not quite up to date4
I teach IMS courses for 6 years now. This is my favorite book. It's a good introduction to IMS and covers many topics in suffcient detail.
Still IMS is evolving fast and you have to check with the specs for the latest updates and changes.
A well written, easy to read reference on IMS5
A good and thorough intoduction to IMS and SIP. Easy to read and written in a manner that the book can be re-read over and over again. Has detailed examples on SIP Call flows with sufficient explanations. The book also acts as a bridge for some of us who are unfamiliar with mobile/cellular networks.
Hopefully the book will be updated with each revision of IMS.
Congratulations to the author.
A must have if you start with IMS5
Possibly the best technical book I've ever read.
I work with IMS technology and we use the book in our department to introduce IMS to newcomers. But I also work in European projects on IMS and the book is the main reference for most of the other teams involved.
You just need this book and the 3GPP specifications for anything you want to do with IMS.

Product Description
Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary, by Ray Horak, is a comprehensive telecommunications dictionary of more than 7,500 terms critical to understanding voice, data, video, and multimedia communications system and network technologies, applications, and regulation. Given the convergence of computing and communications, the book also effectively is a computer dictionary with a telecom focus. It is thoroughly researched, highly objective, absolutely accurate, and includes just about every essential term, abbreviation, acronym, contraction, initialism, and portmanteau you might encounter in the telecom and datacom domains. Although the book is a technical dictionary, Horak’s plain-English, commonsense style yields definitions that are as thoroughly understandable to the business professional or student as they are to the electrical engineer. In fact, many entries are encyclopedic in nature, discussing applications and issues. Horak also injects a bit of his wry sense of humor, sprinkling occasional telecom trivia and marginally related definitions that will have you smiling and chuckling to yourself, but not to the point that they detract from what is an important book on a serious subject. An instant classic, Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is the one and only telecom dictionary you will need. It also makes a perfect companion to Horak’s Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook, published by Wiley-Interscience in October 2007.

Review
"For anyone who has to work in our field, and particularly for those who must describe it to others, I highly recommend Ray Horak's Telecom Dictionary. It is over 500-pages of thoroughly researched, densely packed, and wonderfully entertaining information for anyone who works in the telecom field."
—Jim Burton, Unified Communications Strategies
Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary by Ray Horak is comprehensive with more than 4,600 terms essential to a clear and comprehensive understanding of voice, data, video and multimedia communications system and network technologies, applications and regulations. Although the book is a technical dictionary, Horak’s plain-English, commonsense style yields definitions that are as thoroughly researched, objective, accurate, and includes just about every essential term, abbreviation, acronym, contraction, initialism and portmanteau you might encounter in the telecom and datacom domains.
The book is the perfect companion to his Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook, published by Wiley-Interscience in October 2007. Taken together, these two are all you need to get your arms around the essentials of telecom.
—Reviewed by Mark Simon, Founder/CEO of EvinceMedia (Telecom Reseller, May/June 2008 Edition)
Many folks who entered the telecom trade during the 1980s and the go-go years of the 1990s came to rely on Newton’s Telecom Dictionary, from long-time BCR columnist Harry Newton, as their guide to the wild and wooly world of telecom.
Unfortunately, those of us in the trade didn’t think very highly of Harry’s contribution. While it did not lack for wit, Newton’s Dictionary was woefully short on quality information. In fact, one of the ways the veterans identified the rookies was by the latter’s dependence on what we looked at as a rather lame source.
For those who are entering the field today (and even for those who have been around for a while) there is a new dictionary that is worth the investment. Ray Horak, President of The Context Corporation, has written the Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary, and it’s a gem. It’s 559 pages of well-written, insightful information on everything from "A" (for Ampere) to "Zero-Water Peak Fiber", not to mention symbols like Octothorpe (i.e. the "#" sign) and all those terms we have that begin with numbers starting like "0B + D".
Mr. Horak’s book is thoroughly researched, and contains an unfathomable wealth of detail. I have taught data networking for over 25-years and pride myself on precision- this book is precise. Where you might think you know the definition of that term, here you’ll find that definition expressed with absolute precision and find three other definitions you weren’t even aware of.
Ours is a challenging field, and good sources of information are few and far between. The Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary is a source you can count on. If they have a Jeopardy category on "Telecom Trivia", my money’s on Ray Horak.
—Reviewed by Michael Finneran, dBrn Associates (NoJitter.com, May 29, 2008)
What’s remarkable about this work is it defines over 4,600 telecom terms and, scanning through it, it appears there are more TLAs (three-letter acronyms) involved than the mind can comfortably encompass. I’ve found the dictionary incredibly useful when researching, and every now and then I find an interesting snippet of trivia (did you know Bob Metcalfe’s middle name is "Melancton"?).
—Reviewed by Mark Gibbs (Network World, 4/30/08)
Books about telecom subjects generally fall into one of two categories: Very Basic or Incomprehensible. For the vast majority of us that fall between these two extremes, there is a new dictionary of telecom terms that is neither too technical, nor condescending.
The standard text, and one of the most widely read books in telecom, has been Newton’s Telecom Dictionary, now in its 23rd edition. But, the man who edited Newton’s for much of its history, has now published his own version of a telecom dictionary. Webster’s New World Telecom Dictionary (Wiley, 2008, ISBN 978-0-471-77457-0) is written by Ray Horak.
A dictionary is one of the most difficult books to write. Just coming up with a comprehensive list of terms is onerous enough in itself. But, to define each of these terms in a way that is understandable by the unwashed masses, is mind boggling.
Horak has done an admirable job, and created a work that can be used where Newton’s can cause problems. For example, in the expert witness work I sometimes perform, Newton’s funny or flippant definitions can be used to impugn the credibility of the source itself. You will not have this problem with Webster’s; it is a work that will never cause you a red face if you use it in a hostile environment.
In all, I will continue to keep both on my bookshelf, and value them both, cognizant of the differences.
—Reviewed by Gene Retske (The Prepaid Press, April 2008)
I found a lot to like about Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary. First, it is indeed very easy to read, and contains a lot of detail, as well as good cross referencing in the entries where needed. Second, it provides good illustrations and diagrams that get the point across. Finally, while touted as a dictionary, it feels more like an encyclopedia in that it does not have that dry dictionary form—but rather a more inviting feel that makes you want to come explore. Whether you are a telecom or IT professional, do yourself a favor and get Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary as it is highly recommended.
—T. Michael Testi (BC Books, October 31, 2007)

A must-have for your technical library5
Ray Horak's "Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary" is an invaluable reference for anyone studying or working in the telecommunications and/or computer fields. These disciplines are well-known for their excessive use of acronyms, but Horak's clear, explanatory prose makes sense of the alphabet soup. The book is actually fun to read as well, which is remarkable for what is ostensibly a dictionary. His writing is spot-on for technical accuracy and detail, yet engaging and accessible. A very useful feature of this Dictionary is its extensive use of cross-references for entries, prompting the reader to engage on a journey of learning from one related topic to another. An excellent companion reference for this dictionary is Horak's "Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook".
A Better Source than the Internet!5
Review by Vladimir Kaminsky
Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary by Ray Horak is a comprehensive telecommunications dictionary of more than 4,600 terms essential to a clear understanding of voice, data, video, and multimedia communications system and network topologies, technologies, applications, and regulations. The book encompasses numerous volumes of materials in the area of telecommunications that can be only compared with information from the Internet.
Horak's background and experience allowed him to be an expert in many telecommunications areas. The book is the witness to this fact: it covers such simple technologies as twisted pair, such complex techniques as Passive Optical Networks, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing; and such evolving technologies as WiMAX and MIMO.
It is interesting to note that Horak presents dry facts of telecommunications reality with humor and historical references, making it easy to read and more attractive to readers. The book can amaze a reader by its thoroughness to cover various topics, provide references, describe symbols; and it reveals Horak's deep knowledge of the topics and ability to work with huge amount of sources. For an encyclopedic treatment of the subject and a perfect companion to this work, see Horak's Telecommunications and Data Communications Handbook, also published by Wiley in 2007.
Horak is an independent telecom consultant. He is active in litigation support as a consulting expert and testifying expert, often in cases involving intellectual property such as patent, copyright, and trademark and service infringement. He has authored five telecom books and written of hundreds of technical articles, white papers, case studies, and solution briefs.
Vladimir Kaminsky, PhD is a President of Practel, Inc, a consulting company that is specializing in advanced communications technologies and network design.
A valuable addition to your Telecom Library5
I review books in my role as a VoIP & SIP trainer for TrainingCity.com. When students ask me what to buy, I always recommend that they have a technical dictionary close at hand.
I am now recommending they have two, the old one and "Webster's New World Telecom Dictionary". I know it seems like overkill, but in fact these two books are both on my list of "must haves" for 2008. Webster's dictionary is focused, includes diagrams, and provides timely, accurate information.
Buying two or more books is never easy, so I often suggest students speak with their managers and discuss buying a "team library" of books that can be shared by everyone in the group. Often companies have a book budget, it can't hurt to ask!

Product Description
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the future of Internet telephony. And this book is your guide to that future.
IPv6 is the replacement for the currently used IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4). IPv6 will offer increased IP addresses (full 128-bit addresses, compared to the 32-bit addresses of IPv4), enhanced security, and greater robustness. It will also be fully "backwards compatible" with existing IPv4 systems. These capabilities will finally make Internet telephony a viable competitor to conventional switched telephone networks. In this book, Dan Minoli clearly explains IPv6 and how telephone networks can be built on its foundations.
This is not just another IPv6 book; instead, it focuses on those aspects of IPv6 relevant to Internet telephony systems and voice networks. Minoli uses a compare/contrast approach, exploring where IPv6 is similar to IPv4 and where it differs, to let you quickly grasp the essence of IPv6 and the similarities (and differences) between current IPv4-based systems and IPv6-based systems.
If you will be designing, implementing, or maintaining the next generation of Internet telephony systems, then you need the information in this book!
*Explains the essential concepts of IPv6 and how they relate to Internet telephony
*Describes how Internet telephony systems using IPv6 are different from, and better than, Internet telephony systems based on the older IPv4 standard
*Discusses how to transition existing IPv4 Internet telephony systems and conventional switched systems to IPv6-based systems
*Extensive treatment of security issues, including IP layer encryption and authentication methods
*Explains connection techniques, including "plug and play" approaches, for equipment used in IPv6 systems
* The first title describing how the next generation Internet protocol-IPv6-can be used for Internet telephony
* Explains IPv6 as it applies to Internet telephony (VoIP)
* Shows how IPv6 gives better security, QoS, and signal integrity in Internet telephony

*Explains connection techniques-including "plug and play" approaches-for equipment used in IPv6 systems

Introduction
With the release of Windows XP, Microsoft provided a radically different approach to the customization of the Windows graphical user interface (GUI) by providing a built-in visual style engine. A visual style controls the color scheme and the bitmap graphics that are used for such Windows interface elements as the Start menu, the taskbar, and the objects we find on a typical window (such as the title bar and control buttons). Although Windows XP shipped with only one visual style—the XP style—the fact that the visual style engine exists makes it possible for any user to radically alter the look and feel of the Windows interface.
Through the manipulation of Windows themes (the icons, mouse pointers, desktop background, and other GUI elements we interface with when we use Windows) and visual styles, we can actually "skin" the Windows interface (a skin being the combination of modified theme elements and visual style items). This means you can create a custom interface, and the limits on the possibilities are really up to you and your artistic inclinations.
Theme elements can be easily modified using tools built in to the Windows XP environment. For more radical interface modification, a number of third-party software packages make it easy to create any number of extremely unique "looks" for the interface.
Skinning Windows XP provides both a primer and an advanced user guide to creating your own Windows themes, visual styles, and skins (whether you are using Windows XP Home or Windows XP Profesisonal). Although this book is designed for the novice as well as the more advanced Windows user, its logical step-by-step approach provides a learning environment ideal for the novice and provides the more experienced user with a breadth of details because more advanced skinning topics are discussed.
Although this book takes its subject matter very seriously, the material itself is approached in a straightforward, conversational manner that should help you digest the information without dozing off or developing a horrible migraine headache. It will also provide you with the knowledge base you need to further explore the concept of skinning Windows and enable you to advance your own creative sensibilities when you have set the book down after reading the last chapter.
Conventions Used in This Book
Certain conventions have been followed in this book to help you digest all the material. At the beginning of each chapter, you'll find a list of the major topics covered in that chapter. And because this book explores the visual aspects of skinning Windows XP, ample screen captures have been provided to ground you in each process as you create themes, visual styles, and skins. You will also find several icons used throughout this book. These icons denote additional information on a subject, supply asides that provide useful insight, or give warnings that can help you steer clear of problem areas related to Windows themes, visual styles, and skins. These icons are as follows:
How This Book Is Organized
This book has been organized so that a novice user can explore basic to intermediate to advanced subject matter as each chapter is read. However, the chapters have been written to be primarily self-contained so the intermediate or advanced user can pick up the book and jump to a particular chapter and take full advantage of the topics covered in that chapter.
The book has been configured so the reader can first explore Windows themes (the simplest way to modify the Windows XP interface) and learn how to modify default themes as well as download themes available on the Web. Information is also provided on the various types of skinning software and how to acquire that software. Skins and visual styles can then be downloaded from the Web, making skinning Windows a matter of installing a simple application and then downloading any number of premade skins.
For users with a more artistic bent, you learn how to create your own skins and looks and the software options that are available. Finally, an appendix includes an introduction to software that enables a very advanced user to actually hack Windows resources and create skins without the use of additional skinning software.
Skinning Windows is fun and allows you to take the Windows environment to a whole new visual level. Whatever your current knowledge level is related to Windows, you will be able to use this book to personalize the look and feel of the XP interface. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Only For The Most Novice Of Windows Users4
After writing 2 glowing reviews for other books in the Pogue Press series I knew that the only way to go was down. Well, that might be a little harsh. I don't have any problems with this book by David Pogue himself, it's just I don't know how useful this book is. Microsoft really outdid themselves when they released Windows XP, and it was developed with the most novice of users in mind. Even at the low retail price that this book lists at, I just don't know how necessary it really is. Nicely written, good content, but only the greenest of computer users would probably find this book useful.

Product Description
Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production shows how experienced professionals with deadlines and billable hours use InDesign efficiently and effectively. Through the case studies and interviews, readers will find inspired to look beyond the over-emphasized basic features and into the depths of InDesign's utility for real-world print design.
Most InDesign books are written for beginners, and experienced users are frustrated by them. When you already know how to make, fill, and thread a text box, the entire first half of most InDesign books is useless. But this one doesn't dwell on the basics. Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production fulfills the promise of the Mastering series, to provide real-world skills to professionals and students. Like all Mastering books, this one includes:
* A "by pros for pros" approach: The author is an active professional working in the field of graphic arts, layout, and design, writing for professionals who want to improve their skills or learn new skills.
* Real-world examples: Running throughout the text are examples of how the various skills are applied in real scenarios, described throughout the book in the form of examples and case studies from the author's own design and consulting work, as well as interviews with other designers using InDesign on the job.
* Skill-based teaching and hands-on exercises
Although the book has a comprehensive glossary, page one begins right away speaking to the core market—print professionals—in industry terms about industry challenges. This immediately lets experienced InDesign users know the book is about them. The approach is humorous, making the digestion and retention of complicated information easier for the reader through quips, anecdotes, and design- and print-geek humor. But at all times the book is true to its mission: Helping a professional do their job in InDesign without frustration, confusion, or aesthetic compromise.

The facts about this BOOK!!!!2
I bought this book thinking i would learn more about InDesign then i knew. Although i feel it has brought some knowledge to the table, i do NOT feel this book is worth the review of stars others have given and the price. The maker of the book, i give him two thumbs up if he really designed this whole book in InDesign, BUT, he should have used spell check!!! For a book that is telling you that it will help you master InDesign, he has not and this is the worst representation of a typesetter. I feel if someone is telling me i would master something he would of atleast spell checked it. Thats why im giving this book a two. There is sooooooooo much grammer errors, type spelling, and run-ons going to left field that if i didnt know what i was doing, i would throw this book away!!!!! So for any of you that know how spelling, grammer and punctuation is a must for any typsetter, the author gives a bad name to us. Though, this book can be a great intro or a way to freshen your skills, but i would NOT recommend this book for anyone that hasn't touched InDesign. It does not have any hands-on or come with a CD in lamens terms. Its for a moderate typesetter. Hope that helps you.
Not for the beginner5
I've used InDesign for three years, watched all the [...] videos, attend the local ID user group regularly, read MOGO, InDesignSecrets and the other weblogs on ID and... I still learned a lot of new things from this book. I'm studying to take the ID certification exam and I'm sure that this book will put me over the top for the print production stuff. It is an excellent resource for folks who have a good foundation in InDesign already. This is really not a beginner's book - grab this one after you know your way around ID fairly well.
a fine book for print pros5
I'm a sometimes InDesign user trying to hone my skills on real projects. This book is useful for me because it speaks to us print production and design people specifically. One gets the sense that the author has really spent time in the trenches using these tools under deadline, so he doesn't waste your time. It also has humor and a nice personal writing style that makes it bearable to actually read, (which is generally the exception and not the norm in technical books). To me there's nothing worse than a software book that bores ... it is an insult to the reader and thus the ultimate failure of any software title. this book also practices what it preaches: the page design is elegant and adheres to the rules of good design espoused in the text. This looks to be a well-edited series, I will definitely seek out other SYBEX Serious Skills titles. Hopefully they'll be as solid as this gem.

Best Photoshop Book Ever!5
Photoshop CS3 for Forensic Professionals is by far the most informative course book for photoshop users. As a college student working towards a criminal justice degree with a concentration in criminal investigations, I highly recommend this book for any professional or student that needs to improve their digital imaging skills. The instructions are easy to understand and the step by step instructions on the companion CD are detailed. After reading Photoshop CS3 for Forensic Professionals and taking the CD course I can honestly say that my imaging skills have been greatly enhanced. This book is an excellent student resource and an invaluable tool for the forensic professional.
Should be on the shelf of every forensic imaging professional!5
Part 1, "The Essentials", is comprised of six chapters. The first two chapters are not specific to Photoshop, and are a must read for anyone interested or involved in the use of digital images within a legal setting. The remaining four chapters provide an important foundation for analysts and investigators using Photoshop.
Part 2, "The Digital Darkroom", and Part 3, "Image Analysis and Enhancement", are detailed instructions regarding Photoshop's settings, filters, and the multitude of related processes to achieve optimum imaging results. Included with the book is a CD-ROM contianing sample images to work with when going through the tutorials, as well as some free scripts and trial plugin's.
I've been using Photoshop for several years now in my Forensic Video workflow, as well as personally for Graphic and Web design projects. This book has already proven to be the single most valuable reference for me pertaining to the use of Photoshop in either setting. It's also probably the smartest investment I've made in quite some time.
Photoshop CS3 for Forensics Professionals5
As a former Forensic Video Analyst for a law enforcement agency, I can attest that not only is this the most thorough and easy to understand FVA "Course" book that I have ever read and gained the most from, the author is one of the top Forensic Video Analysts in the country, and even the world.
Any one who is interested in this profession, law enforcement and private, must have this book. Even if you already are an FVA professional, this book is an excellant reference source.

Great Book4
I bought this book to help understand nCloth in Maya and it was very helpful with explaining the different properties and how to create different effects. I can't speak for the other sections in the book but the chapters on cloth were very helpful for me.
Bent corners3
I was actualy surprised at the way my items where packaged. Mastering Maya8.5 is a pretty big book and it ended up being shrink wrapped with another item and these items weren't boxed. In putting these two items together and packaging them the way they were the book ended up with horrible corner damage. This is the first time I have ever been dissapointed with Amazon.
This book is excellent!5
I highly encourage anyone who wants to learn 3D animation with Maya 8.5 to get this book. It comes with a CD ROM that has many helpful source files that go along with the chapter. Each chapter gives you a thorough lesson in the many powerful features that Maya 8.5 offers.

All Bow Down And Hail Ben Hart...5
This brilliant book is destined to become a literary classic of the higest regards. This is deep psychological marketing at its best. How would you like to know what emotion to tap in your sales copy that will double your sales? Or what about the most effective way to start your sales letter? How about a money phrase that I have personally used to increase my sales by 20%? It's all packed into this power house of a book.
This book goes far beyond just direct mail marketing, which frankly I have little interest in, and taps into something much deeper: the human. Ben shows you how the basic marketing principles on how to exploit human nature go all the way back to Jesus Christ and the Bible. He goes on to make the point that the basic laws of marketing have existed for over 2,000 years and that they will never change because they are based on needs and desires of humans.
This flies in the face of college courses that teach culture diversity and that we are all different. Nonsense! Ben shows the doorway to what we all have in common, and then drives a Mac truck right through it with the sample sales copy he provides you. You simply adapt his sales copy to your needs and be prepared to start handling all the orders that come rolling in. Every master marketer needs to have this book.

She ripped off the title1
I will get around to checking this out of the library out of simple curiousity, though I have never been helped by any "# step guides." The "process approach" to writing leads to stultifying boredom. Writing cannot be disected into steps. But I am suspicious of the product for a far more important reason: the author appears to have ripped off the title of a much better book, Writing from Start to Finish: The "Story Workshop" Basic Forms Rhetoric-Reader.
The older book, by John Schultz, makes great sense. If you are to writing what a gardener is to gardening, i.e. you like the ink under your nails and you like to nurture images and ideas and help them to grow into writings, then scrounge for a copy of Writing from Start to Finish: The "Story Workshop" Basic Forms Rhetoric-Reader.
Ideal for aspiring writers4
Whenever you write, whatever you write, getting started is generally the hardest part of the process.
Most established writers develop a routine - it may be a ritual they complete before settling into their work, it may be a certain literary approach to their writing. Whatever it is, it has usually evolved after spending an inordinate amount of time staring at a blank screen.
For many newcomers, however, writing remains a mysterious process that inexplicably occurs.
Fortunately for these writers, help is at hand in the form of a new how-to book from Kate Grenville, an award-winning novelist who has run writing workshops in universities in the US and Australia since 1981.
Grenville's approach to writing, as detailed in `Writing From Start to Finish', is different from many others. Instead of thinking ahead of writing, she prefers to reverse the process, by allowing the mind to "roam around the topic in a free-form way".
This is the time, she says, to explore the topic, making a few notes as you go. Once you have enough literary titbits, you can begin placing them in some kind of order, expanding upon some and deleting others. By this time, "the process of creating and the process of judging" are separate.
So, once the writer has written, the internal editor is free to edit. Too often, as Grenville argues, the situation is reversed by thinking before writing.
`Writing From Start to Finish' simplifies the process of writing and presents it as six steps that can be applied to a novel, essay or report. They are:
* Getting ideas (in no particular order)
* Choosing (selecting the most useful ideas)
* Outlining (putting these ideas into order - making a plan)
* Drafting (writing a first draft, from beginning to end, without going back)
* Revising (cutting, adding or moving parts of this draft where necessary)
* Editing (proof-reading for grammar, spelling and meaning)
Each step is demonstrated by two sample pieces of writing - a story and an essay - which evolve through the course of the book. At the end of the book, the reader will have achieved a polished piece of writing.
There are many writing books available, but if you're looking for a user-friendly introduction to the craft, Grenville's book will ease you in gently and guide you along the way.

Different Approach5
I can sum it up in 3 letters...W-O-W! I could not believe the impact that some of the techniques had on the participants. Dave's tricks can be used to "spice-up" what would be a boring, uninteresting topic. Although a lot of the material is geared toward the buisness world, the tricks presented in the book can be used in a variety of settings.
I am an instructor in the public safety field. Believe me when I say that we have several "routine" topics that are taught over and over and over. You should have seen the look on their faces when I told them that we were going to write "love letters" to emphasize the importance of punctuation.
If you are a trainer/instructor, you have got to get this book!!
