Good overview of reporting services3
I received this book today and have already completed four chapters. It is an easy read and generally thought out. The only complaint so far is the author's over use of the word "Please"! Please see Figure n.n Please give an application name... Enough!
Did the publisher review this book before it went to press? How annoying!
Day two:
In addition, the author writes in broken English: "You should also keep in mind that there is more then one way of getting a report done."
If I had a nickel for every grammatical error I could buy the book which is a shame since the book really is helpful.
This book is rated for intermediate - advanced user but over and over there are instructions for creating a project, creating a dataset, etc.
Very useful book5
I like this book very much. The author explains the client-side reporting with Visual studio in C# in detail, especially step by step. The topics cover windows form, web form, windows service and web service, which are useful for developers to write the report easily.
Although this book says it covers version VS 2005 and VS 2008, I really hope the author can update this book using VS 2008 version and add some new features such as LINQ to generate the client-side reports easily. I will recommend this book to everyone.

Great book5
This is a great book to have as a resource for not only some of the new features of Excel 2007, but also as a primer to what a data warehouse is and what it means to build one. Of course, the latter is something that can be learned in depth in many other texts, but for a user of Excel, it makes for a good launching point to other more complex concepts of data warehouses and BI (Business Intelligence).
There are many great examples that can simply make spreadsheets look and work better regardless of whether you are building a dashboard or not.
Great, Informative Resource5
Excel 2007 Dashboards & Reports is an excellent resource. The book gives very clear and concise instructions for building Excel dashboards. I highly recommend this book.

Business Intelligence Developer likes this book4
This is a good book.
Business Intelligence is a broad and many times an incorrectly used term. My opinion is that in essence, Business Intelligence is all about getting information into the hands of business users so they can make decisions.
This book is written for the business user. Microsoft is the fastest growing player in the Business Intelligence world. Their strategy is to leverage Microsoft Office to get the information into the hands of the business users. For example, think of how many people use Excel in the business place. That is a huge number of people to tap into who will already know how to use their Business Intelligence tools.
The book uses a diagram to show the Microsoft Business Intelligence platform. Each chapter then focuses in on a section of the diagram. It gives you a "you are here" pointer in the diagram. It gives you and explanation and then an example of how to do the important and common tasks. Each chapter is also independent of the other chapter, so you focus in on what you need to know with no worries that you missed something important in a previous chapter.
I am a Senior Business Intelligence Developer. I build the Data Warehouse and Data Cubes and develop the ETL. I have enough on my plate to keep me busy, but I still need to know all aspects of the platform. If you are a developer, I recommend this book because it gives you enough information to get you up to speed with Office 2007 as it relates to BI quickly. It shows you how to get your KPI's into SharePoint, for example. I recommend the book for developers as well.
Good Concise Review5
This book provided a great, easy to understand review of the features of Office 2007. Touched upon pivot tables, performance point, dashboards and scorecards. Plenty of examples were provided. This will definitely help me with implementing executive dashboards at my company.
Excellent book for the government contractor5
While I have considered myself reasonably good with Office, this book dramatically increased my understanding of the power hidden in Excel and the new possibilities of presentation. I would highly recommend the book to any government contractor, even if you haven't upgraded to Office 2007 as the descriptive text and easy to follow examples have direct application to earlier versions as well. I've cut my production time dramatically and, more importantly, can 'slice and dice' the data quicker and with better insight than ever before.

Product Description
If you're an experienced system administrator looking to acquire Linux skills, or a seasoned Linux user facing a new challenge, Linux System Administration offers practical knowledge for managing a complete range of Linux systems and servers. The book summarizes the steps you need to build everything from standalone SOHO hubs, web servers, and LAN servers to load-balanced clusters and servers consolidated through virtualization. Along the way, you'll learn about all of the tools you need to set up and maintain these working environments.
Linux is now a standard corporate platform with users numbering in the hundreds of millions, and there is a definite shortage of talented administrators. Linux System Administration is ideal as an introduction to Linux for Unix veterans, MCSEs, and mainframe administrators, and as an advanced (and refresher) guide for existing Linux administrators who will want to jump into the middle of the book. Inside, you'll learn how to:
* Set up a stand-alone Linux server
* Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot a DNS server using BIND
* Build an Internet server to manage sites, perform email and file transfers, and more
* Set up an email service for a small-to-medium-sized site, complete with authentication
* Install and configure Apache, PHP, and MySQL on a web server built from scratch
* Combine computers into a load-balanced Apache web server cluster based on the free Linux Virtual Server
* Set up local network services from distributed file systems to DHCP services, gateway services, print services, user management and more
* Use Linux virtualization with Xen or VMWare to run multiple kernels on one piece of hardware; manage each kernel's access to processor time, devices, and memory
* Create shell scripts and adapt them for your own needs
* Back up and restore data with rsync, tar, cdrecord, Amanda, and MySQL tools
Linux System Administration is not only knowledgeable and practical, but convenient. The ingredients for this book had been scattered throughout mailing lists, forums, and discussion groups, as well as books, periodicals, and the experiences of colleagues. Everything is now in one handy guide. In the course of their research, the authors also solved many problems whose solutions were completely undocumented. They now pass their lessons on to you.

Great reference4
This Linux system administration book has been very handy for me over the last 6 months. I found the information on high availability and virtualization very helpful since I am deploying this in my domain. This book is also a great command line reference for me. The security recommendations also came in very handy. This book also gave me guidance on other books to purchase for more indepth information certain topics. I recommend this book for new system administrators!
Quite Disappointing2
I shelled out the full price for this at a local bookstore with the hopes that it could help me setup a new Debian LINUX server. Normally, O'Reilly books have a very high level of accuracy and detail, this one deviates from that standard quite a bit. I used to admin BSD boxes many moons ago and thought this would be the perfect refresher course for me to get back up to speed with the current technology. From the beginning of the book, I started running into problems and was getting confusing errors that were not at all mentioned in the book. For starters, this book is based on older software packages that aren't included in the current distribution, so you have to use your favorite search engine to find out what the current version and installation package names are. Next, the configuration files the authors tell you to modify are in many cases wrong or non-existent. They have you comment out lots of lines in various config files only to discover later on in the book that you have to uncomment them so things like PHP will actually work. On top of that, the ISPCONFIG setup fails, as there is some sort of problem with the PHP installation. AARGH! I think I spent more time playing Sherlock Holmes on the web than I did reading the book. Which, I actually recommend that YOU do if you are in a similar position as me... To add to my frustration with the authors, their website is basically vacant. My opinion is they cashed the check from O'Reilly and forgot about the rest of their commitments to the readers who are spending from $29 to $44.99 USD on a copy of this outdated and confusing waste of paper. There might be a few useful tidbits here and there, but the web is your best resource for this information. I gave it 2 stars because it does point you in a general direction of how you might want to set things up, but the explanation of it all is generally wrong.
This Book should be renamed Debian Sys Admin2
I found this book very disapointing. My main concern was with the authors decision to base the examples solely on Debian distros of Linux. This is not mentioned in the the books description.
The book also advises that there is a website to accompany the book with examples, tips and new procedures. This turns out to be a one page website with 5 links that refer back to the same homepage with no content.

From the Author
This book covers every published objective in the latest two-part hands-on exam (Troubleshooting and System Maintenance; Installation and Configuration) for the Red Hat Certified Engineer credential from Red Hat. Plus it's up to date for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5. The best way to prepare for the RHCE exam is with Red Hat's prep courses, but you'll find this book an invaluable resource in your studies and afterwards on the job.
Everything you see on the RHCT exam is part of the RHCE exam. In other words, you can use this book to study for both exams. If you're studying first for the RHCT, read the Introduction. You'll find a guide to the topics to study in the book, based on the publicly available Red Hat exam prep requirements.
But more importantly, to pass the Red Hat exams, you need real-world Linux administration skills. This book can help you brush up and enhance skills in areas where you might be a bit rusty. The problem-based focus means you can use this book even after you pass the RHCE exam.
I've updated this book to the latest requirements, including tips on making Security Enhanced Linux play well with any services you may configure. There are now 16 chapters in this book, which means there are many more labs that can help you practice configuring and troubleshooting Linux.
If you're serious about passing the RHCE or RHCT exam, and can afford it, take the Red Hat courses. And read this book. As suggested by Red Hat's Exam prep guide, practice installing and configuring Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Practice installing, configuring, and activating network services. Configure scenarios that require you to debug the boot process. Configure scenarios that require you to repair network services. Practice until installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining Red Hat Enterprise Linux is second nature to you.
Thank you, and good luck!

Excellent4
This isn't a book for Linux beginners for sure but for those who have a bit of experience with Linux you'll hit the ground running. Some areas such as NIS server set up I wish it would go into and the first couple chapters seem like a waste of space since there is no depth, but the later content is A+. I give it a good recommendation to jump start your RHCE studies. Just don't forget to supplement with labs of your own afterwords!
Outstanding review for the test!!!5
I can say without a doubt that this book is what put me over the top in gaining my RHEL5 RHCE.
Without divulging any details of the test, let me just say that for anyone who has administered RHEL in a production environment for a couple of years, the test isn't hard. It is mostly a test of your experience.
This book gives you the guideline for everything you need to know to pass the test. This means that along with this book, those things you may not administer on an everyday basis like NIS, NFS, ACLs, etc.; you will need other sources for in-depth information like the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Installation and Deployment Guides from Redhat, Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 Administration Unleashed, and the various O'Reilly books. Read the RHCE Prep Guide and understand what they want, and you will, along with this book, pass the test.

Product Description
In order to thoroughly understand what makes Linux tick and why it works so well on a wide variety of systems, you need to delve deep into the heart of the kernel. The kernel handles all interactions between the CPU and the external world, and determines which programs will share processor time, in what order. It manages limited memory so well that hundreds of processes can share the system efficiently, and expertly organizes data transfers so that the CPU isn't kept waiting any longer than necessary for the relatively slow disks.
The third edition of "Understanding the Linux Kernel" takes you on a guided tour of the most significant data structures, algorithms, and programming tricks used in the kernel. Probing beyond superficial features, the authors offer valuable insights to people who want to know how things really work inside their machine. Important Intel-specific features are discussed. Relevant segments of code are dissected line by line. But the book covers more than just the functioning of the code; it explains the theoretical underpinnings of why Linux does things the way it does.
This edition of the book covers Version 2.6, which has seen significant changes to nearly every kernel subsystem, particularly in the areas of memory management and block devices. The book focuses on the following topics:
Memory management, including file buffering, process swapping, and Direct memory Access (DMA)
The Virtual Filesystem layer and the Second and Third Extended Filesystems
Process creation and scheduling
Signals, interrupts, and the essential interfaces to device drivers
Timing
Synchronization within the kernel
Interprocess Communication (IPC)
Program execution
"Understanding the Linux Kernel" will acquaint you with all the inner workings of Linux, but it's more than just an academic exercise. You'll learn what conditions bring out Linux's best performance, and you'll see how it meets the challenge of providing good system response during process scheduling, file access, and memory management in a wide variety of environments. This book will help you make the most of your Linux system.

About the Author
Daniel P. Bovet got a Ph.D. in computer science at UCLA in 1968 and is now full Professor at the University of Rome, "Tor Vergata," Italy. He had to wait over 25 years before being able to teach an operating system course in a proper manner because of the lack of source code for modern, well-designed systems. Now, thanks to cheap PCs and to Linux, Marco and Dan are able to cover all the facets of an operating system from booting to tuning and are able to hand out tough, satisfying homework to their students. (These young guys working at home on their PCs are really spoiled; they never had to fight with punched cards.) In fact, Dan was so fascinated by the accomplishments of Linus Torvalds and his followers that he spent the last few years trying to unravel some of Linux's mysteries. It seemed natural, after all that work, to write a book about what he found.
Marco Cesati received a degree in mathematics in 1992 and a Ph.D. in computer science (University of Rome, "La Sapienza") in 1995. He is now a research assistant in the computer science department of the School of Engineering (University of Rome, "Tor Vergata"). In the past, he served as system administrator and Unix programmer for the university (as a Ph.D. student) and for several institutions (as a consultant).

The comments needed by the Linux code5
These are the comments needed to understand Linux code, very helpful and thorough. The authors are knowledgeable, and explain the material well.
Greatly Detailed and Very Comprehensive4
I had originally intended to read this book to knock out two birds with one stone. I wanted to learn Operating System theory and specifically how it was implemented in Linux. I quickly learned, however, that I would of been much better suited if I already had a good OS theory background. But I pressed on and finally couldn't take it anymore and had to put it down and pick up Linux Kernel Development by Robert Love. I began reading Linux Kernel Development concurrently with this book and it is definitely what I would recommend for those new to OS internals.
After using both of those books I started to get a good foothold on the kernel. And Understanding the Linux Kernel quickly becomes like a good novel you can't put down. I did like how it was x86-centric because abstract is nice and all but sometimes it helps to see how things actually are done. However some might not like that. I did not like how it threw a bunch of detail at you without completely unifying everything.. But thats why I read Linux Kernel Development concurrently. All and all this book is definitely worth it for those who want to know about the Linux kernel and now as I use my GNU/Linux operating system I can't help and point out to myself whats going on under the hood.
Good book4
I purchased this book as a complimentary book for the regular OS text books, so far the coverage is very good and helpful.

GTK+ is one of the most influential graphical toolkits for the Linux operating system. It is the technology upon which the GNOME and XFCE desktop environments are based, and its crucial to have clear understanding of its complexities to build even a simple Linux desktop application. Foundations of GTK+ Development guides you through these complexities, laying the foundation that will allow you to cross from novice to professional.
Foundations of GTK+ Development is aimed at C programmers and presents numerous real-life examples that you can immediately put to use in your projects. Some familiarity with C programming is assumed, as the book delves into new topics from the beginning. Topics like object inheritance are covered early on to allow for complete understanding of code examples later. And the provided examples are real-life situations that can help you get a head start on your own applications.

Good but could be even better4
I may be the first person to rate this book less than five stars. And please don't get me wrong this is a good book in the sense that it is right up to date and the examples are very helpful. There are, in my opinion, two main areas where the book could have been improved. It dives off into a discussion of some very interesting applications of GLib including socket programming which the author says must of needs be incomplete. This doesn't really fit in with the main thrust of the book and probably should have been the basis, in an expanded form, for a separate book. This space could well have been used for a more expanded treatment of the issues at hand. Secondly the author's views on user interface design have overly influenced his treatment of GtkFixed, GtkLayout etc. One suspects that his work as a developer has been primarily in producing tools for anyone anywhere rather than applications for corporations and / or small businesses. However, regardless of the above, armed with this book plus the API documentation will get you going much faster and more efficiently than if you have only the API documentation.
marginal thumbs up3
I wanted to like this book, but unfortunately I cannot in good conscience give it 5 stars as the other reviewers have.
I will say the book is well organized and is definitely useful as a starting point for studying GTK+ and the author clearly has a great deal of knowledge about the subject. But what should have been the main strength of the book that differentiates it from the mostly inadequate online tutorials is the author conveying to the reader straightforward explanations of important concepts and insider tips and tricks that can only come from extensive experience. He tries to do this, but I found many of his explanations ambiguous and confusing. Important terminology was left undefined or poorly defined which contributed to the confusion.
The author dutifully plods through a presentation of most of the main widgets, providing essentially the same trivial example code each time with minor variations- basically just showing how to put the widget onscreen. But there was a frustrating lack of material devoted to how to use signals and events to perform any useful tasks. The vast majority of the functionality of any GUI application lies in its event handlers and callback functions. After reading this book, you will be able to prototype the GUI for your application, but you may be at a loss to make it actually do something.
By Ch.3 and 4, the same example code has been replicated so many times that there is an increasing frequency of copy-paste errors that gradually becomes very annoying. Also, there are many typos in the text. The lack of editorial oversight and technical review on the part of the publisher combined with the author's lack of attention to detail and failures in exposition has created a book that I can only marginally recommend- mostly because all of the other books that have been published on GTK+ are either out of date or out of print, so this book seems to be the winner by default.
Foundations of GTK+ Development Review5
I picked up this book to help me develop an application knowing absolutely nothing about GTK+ programming and it was beyond helpful. Excellently written, not to mention many code examples showing how to use the GTK+ library properly and efficiently. This book gives you the tools and the understanding for building your own applications and not just re-creating the examples given to you.
I highly recommend this book to anyone programing in C and want to learn how to use the GTK+ library along with the GLib and Pango libraries. This is one book I'm not going to let go of.

Product Description
The kernel of any operating system is its most critical component. The remainder of the system depends upon a correctly functioning and reliable kernel for its operation.
The purpose of this book is to show that the formal specification of kernels can be followed by a completely formal refinement process that leads to the extraction of executable code. The formal refinement process ensures that the code meets the specification in a precise sense.
Two kernels are specified and refined. The first is small and of the kind often used in embedded and real-time systems. It closely resembles the one modelled in our Formal Models of Operating System Kernels. The second is a Separation Kernel, a microkernel architecture devised for cryptographic and other secure applications. Both kernels are refined to the point at which executable code can be extracted. Apart from documenting the process, including proofs, this book also shows how refinement of a realistically sized specification can be undertaken.

This book is written by Z notation. I want to use B methods.5
This book include two specification of operating system, micro C/OS and a kernel for cryptographic systems using Z schemata.
Z is ISO/IEC standards.ISO/IEC 13568:2002 Information technology -- Z formal specification notation -- Syntax, type system and semantics.
And related standard is followint.
ISO/IEC 10165-4:1992/Amd 3:1998 Guidelines for the use of Z in formalizing the behaviour of managed objects .
I am no Z specialist nor OS specialist. And I do not have Z translator to C language. So I cannot understand main part of this book.
So I request my colleague to rewrite this Z example to be utilized B methods.
Also I request another colleague to write TOPPERS/SSP(smallest set profile) specification using Z.
It should be rewrite to be utilised B methods.
This is the first book who can start to formally designe and evaluate the architecture of operating system.
