Color Atlas of Strabismus Surgery: Strategies and Techniques (US $199)
Stationary Office | Pages: 233 | 2007-04-03 | ISBN: 0387332499 | 12 MB
2.7% of children in the US are born with or develop strabismus (crossed eyes) in the early years of life. (The incidence rates are similar in much of the developed world.) While the condition only rarely leads to blindness, it can have long-term impacts on ocular health. Left untreated, one eye will eventually become dominant over the other, heightening the concern over injury or illness in the "good" eye. Strabismus can be treated therapeutically with eye patches, but the success rate isnt optimal. More often, surgical correction is the path chosen not only for cosmetic/social reasons but also because it is more medically effective.

Pancreas - Pathological Practice and Research

Pancreas - Pathological Practice and Research (US $180)
Stationary Office | Pages: 318 | 2007-02-23 | ISBN: 3805582404 | 13 MB
The pancreas lies deep in the body. It is a calm, silent organ located behind the stomach, with much hope and possibilities for solving the physiological and pathological problems of its behavior. Because the pancreas is a complicated organ, it is important in an anatomical and embryological sense, and because of its frequent age related lesions. It develops from two buds fused into a single organ with a ductal system, close to the biliary tract and duodenum.

Both mucous-cell hyperplasia, which corresponds to PanIN-1, and cystic dilatation of the branch pancreatic duct, relevant to branch-duct-type intraductal papillary-mucinous tumors, frequently occur in elderly persons, resulting in the modification of the tissue surrounding it, i.e. atrophy. Moreover, pathological changes in the pancreas are focal or patchy in nature (i.e. normal tissue is found adjacent to the affected foci), especially in non-tumorous lesions, but not homogeneous and diffuse in the case in the liver.

Stochastic Finance An Introduction in Discrete Time

Hans Follmer, Alexander Schied, "Stochastic Finance An Introduction in Discrete Time"
Walter de Gruyter Inc | 2002-08-01 | ISBN: 3110171198 | 400 pages | Djvu | 3,1 Mb
This book is an introduction to financial mathematics for mathematicians. It is intended both for graduate students with a certain background in probability theory as well as for professional mathematicians in industry and academia. In contrast to many textbooks on mathematical finance, only discrete-time stochastic models are considered. This setting has the advantage that the text can concentrate from the beginning on typical problems which are suggested by financial applications. Moreover, certain principles, such as the general incompleteness of realistic market models, become thus more transparent and visible. On the other hand, all models are based on general probability spaces, and so the text captures the interplay between probability theory and functional analysis which is typical for modern mathematical finance.

The first part of the book contains a study of financial investments in a static one-period market model. Here, an investor faces intrinsic risk and uncertainty, which cannot be hedged away. The tools presented to deal with this situation range from the classical theory of expected utility until the more recent development of measures of risk.

In the second part of the book, the idea of dynamic hedging and arbitrage-free pricing of contingent claims is developed in a multi-period framework. Such market models are typically incomplete, and particular focus is given to

methods combining the dynamic hedging of a risky position with the tools of assessing risk and uncertainty as presented in part.

Contents: Mathematical finance in one period: Arbitrage theory. Expected utility. Optimal investments. Measures of risk Dynamic Arbitrage Theory: Dynamic hedging of contingent claims. American contingent claims. Optional decomposition and super-hedging. Efficient hedging in incomplete markets. Minimizing the hedging error. Hedging under constraints

Mícheál Ó Searcóid, "Metric Spaces"
Springer; 1 edition (August 10, 2006) | ISBN: 1846283698 | 304 pages | PDF | 1,7 Mb
The abstract concepts of metric spaces are often perceived as difficult. This book offers a unique approach to the subject which gives readers the advantage of a new perspective on ideas familiar from the analysis of a real line. Rather than passing quickly from the definition of a metric to the more abstract concepts of convergence and continuity, the author takes the concrete notion of distance as far as possible, illustrating the text with examples and naturally arising questions. Attention to detail at this stage is designed to prepare the reader to understand the more abstract ideas with relative ease.

The book goes on to provide a thorough exposition of all the standard necessary results of the theory and, in addition, includes selected topics not normally found in introductory books, such as: the Tietze Extension Theorem; the Hausdorff metric and its completeness; and the existence of curves of minimum length. Other features include:
end-of-chapter summaries and numerous exercises to reinforce what has been learnt;
extensive cross-referencing to help the reader follow arguments;
a Cumulative Reference Chart, showing the dependencies throughout the book on a section-by-section basis as an aid to course design.

The book is designed for third- and fourth-year undergraduates and beginning graduates. Readers should have some practical knowledge of differential and integral calculus and have completed a first course in real analysis. With its many examples, careful illustrations, and full solutions to selected exercises, this book provides a gentle introduction that is ideal for self-study and an excellent preparation for applications.

Dean G. Duffy, "Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations"
Chapman & Hall/CRC; 2 edition (June 26, 2004) | ISBN: 1584884517 | 728 pages | Djvu | 6,1 Mb
Review
The discussed solutions typically involve quite difficult algebra, while non-trivial mathematical steps, such as a change of order of integration or expansion into infinite series (product) are not justified. This gives the book more of an 'engineering' flavour; nonetheless it is certainly of interest to a wider interest.
-EMS Newsletter, Sept. 2005

The book contains many examples and exercises taken from a wide variety of scientific and engineering sources. Also numerical examples are presented using Matlab to help readers for better understanding of the physical problems.
-Studia Univ. Babes-Bolyai Mathematica, Sept. 2005

Book Description
Transform Methods for Solving Partial Differential Equations illustrates the use of Laplace, Fourier, and Hankel transforms to solve partial differential equations encountered in science and engineering. This second edition is expanded to provide a broader perspective on the applicability and use of transform methods. It classifies the problems presented in every chapter by type of region, coordinate system and partial differential equation. Many of the problems included in the book are illustrated to show the reader what they will look like physically. Unlike many mathematics texts, this book provides a step-by-step analysis of problems taken from the actual scientific and engineering literature.

Igor V. Lerner, Boris L. Altshuler, Yuval Gefen , "Fundamental Problems of Mesoscopic Physics: Interactions and Decoherence"
Springer; 1 edition (August 19, 2004) | ISBN: 1402021925 | 373 pages | PDF | 4,3 Mb
Mesoscopic physics deals with effects at submicron and nanoscales where the conventional wisdom of macroscopic averaging is no longer applicable. A wide variety of new devices have recently evolved, all extremely promising for major novel directions in technology, including carbon nanotubes, ballistic quantum dots, hybrid mesoscopic junctions made of different type of normal, superconducting and ferromagnetic materials. This, in turn, demands a profound understanding of fundamental physical phenomena on mesoscopic scales. As a result, the forefront of fundamental research in condensed matter has been moved to the areas where the interplay between electron-electron interactions and quantum interference of phase-coherent electrons scattered by impurities and/or boundaries is the key to such understanding. An understanding of decoherence as well as other effects of the interactions is crucial for developing future electronic, photonic and spintronic devices, including the element base for quantum computation.

Vassili N. Kolokoltsov, "Semiclassical Analysis for Diffusions and Stochastic Processes"
Springer; 1 edition (April 26, 2000) | ISBN: 3540669728 | 347 pages | PDF | 15 Mb
The monograph is devoted mainly to the analytical study of the differential, pseudo-differential and stochastic evolution equations describing the transition probabilities of various Markov processes. These include (i) diffusions (in particular, degenerate diffusions), (ii) more general jump-diffusions, especially stable jump-diffusions driven by stable Lévy processes, (iii) complex stochastic Schrödinger equations which correspond to models of quantum open systems. The main results of the book concern the existence, two-sided estimates, path integral representation, and small time and semiclassical asymptotics for the Green functions (or fundamental solutions) of these equations, which represent the transition probability densities of the corresponding random process. The boundary value problem for Hamiltonian systems and some spectral asymptotics ar also discussed. Readers should have an elementary knowledge of probability, complex and functional analysis, and calculus.

Walter Ferrer Santos, Alvaro Rittatore , "Actions and Invariants of Algebraic Groups"
CRC; 1 edition (April 26, 2005) | ISBN: 082475896X | 472 pages | PDF | 2 Mb
Actions and Invariants of Algebraic Groups presents a self-contained introduction to geometric invariant theory that links the basic theory of affine algebraic groups to Mumford's more sophisticated theory. The authors systematically exploit the viewpoint of Hopf algebra theory and the theory of comodules to simplify and compactify many of the relevant formulas and proofs. The first two chapters introduce the subject and review the prerequisites in commutative algebra, algebraic geometry, and the theory of semisimple Lie algebras over fields of characteristic zero. The authors' early presentation of the concepts of actions and quotients helps to clarify the subsequent material, particularly in the study of homogeneous spaces. This study includes a detailed treatment of the quasi-affine and affine cases and the corresponding concepts of observable and exact subgroups. Among the many other topics discussed are Hilbert's 14th problem, complete with examples and counterexamples, and Mumford's results on quotients by reductive groups. End-of-chapter exercises, which range from the routine to the rather difficult, build expertise in working with the fundamental concepts. The Appendix further enhances this work's completeness and accessibility with an exhaustive glossary of basic definitions, notation, and results.

World Scientific Publishing Company (January 2004) | ISBN: 9812386890 | 110 pages | PDF | 5,4 Mb
During the last twenty years, a large number of books on nonlinear chaotic dynamics in deterministic dynamical systems have appeared. These academic tomes are intended for graduate students and require a deep knowledge of comprehensive, advanced mathematics. There is a need for a book that is accessible to general readers, a book that makes it possible to get a good deal of knowledge about complex chaotic phenomena in nonlinear oscillators without deep mathematical study.

Chaos, Bifurcations and Fractals Around Us: A Brief Introduction fills that gap. It is a very short monograph that, owing to geometric interpretation complete with computer color graphics, makes it easy to understand even very complex advanced concepts of chaotic dynamics. This invaluable publication is also addressed to lecturers in engineering departments who want to include selected nonlinear problems in full time courses on general mechanics, vibrations or physics so as to encourage their students to conduct further study.

Book Info
Text presents complex advanced topics of chaotic dynamics in an easy to understand manner. For students and readers interested in general mechanics, vibrations, or physics.

Differential Geometry: Curves - Surfaces - Manifolds
Posted: December 11th, 2007, 8:45am CET by Tiny Audio

Wolfgang Kuhnel , Bruce Hunt, "Differential Geometry: Curves - Surfaces - Manifolds"
American Mathematical Society; 2 edition (December 13, 2005) | ISBN: 0821839888 | 380 pages | Djvu | 3 Mb
Our first knowledge of differential geometry usually comes from the study of the curves and surfaces in $I!!R^3$ that arise in calculus. Here we learn about line and surface integrals, divergence and curl, and the various forms of Stokes' Theorem. If we are fortunate, we may encounter curvature and such things as the Serret-Frenet formulas. With just the basic tools from multivariable calculus, plus a little knowledge of linear algebra, it is possible to begin a much richer and rewarding study of differential geometry, which is what is presented in this book. It starts with an introduction to the classical differential geometry of curves and surfaces in Euclidean space, then leads to an introduction to the Riemannian geometry of more general manifolds, including a look at Einstein spaces. An important bridge from the low-dimensional theory to the general case is provided by a chapter on the intrinsic geometry of surfaces. The first half of the book, covering the geometry of curves and surfaces, would be suitable for a one-semester undergraduate course. The local and global theories of curves and surfaces are presented, including detailed discussions of surfaces of rotation, ruled surfaces, and minimal surfaces. The second half of the book, which could be used for a more advanced course, begins with an introduction to differentiable manifolds, Riemannian structures, and the curvature tensor. Two special topics are treated in detail: spaces of constant curvature and Einstein spaces. The main goal of the book is to get started in a fairly elementary way, then to guide the reader toward more sophisticated concepts and more advanced topics. There are many examples and exercises to help along the way. Numerous figures help the reader visualize key concepts and examples, especially in lower dimensions. For the second edition, a number of errors were corrected and some text and a number of figures have been added.

Curves and Surfaces

Sebastian Montiel , Antonio Ros , "Curves and Surfaces"
American Mathematical Society (September 13, 2005) | ISBN:0821838156 | 376 pages | Djvu | 3,4 Mb

This introductory textbook puts forth a clear and focused point of view on the differential geometry of curves and surfaces, emphasizing the global aspects. The excellent collection of examples and exercises (with hints) will help students in learning the material. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will find this a nice entry point to differential geometry.

In order to study the global properties of curves and surfaces, it is necessary to have more sophisticated tools than are usually found in textbooks on the topic. In particular, students must have a firm grasp on certain topological theories. Indeed, this monograph treats the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and discusses the Euler characteristic. The authors also cover Alexandrov's theorem on embedded compact surfaces in $mathbb{R}^3$ with constant mean curvature. The last chapter addresses the global geometry of curves, including periodic space curves and the four-vertices theorem for plane curves that are not necessarily convex.

This volume is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested in the differential geometry of curves and surfaces. It can also be used as an introduction to a more general study of differential geometry.

This book is jointly published by the AMS and the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME).

Jørgen Rammer, "Quantum Field Theory of Non-equilibrium States"
Cambridge University Press (July 30, 2007) | ISBN:0521874998 | 550 pages | PDF | 3,2 Mb

Quantum field theory is the application of quantum mechanics to systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom. This textbook presents quantum field theoretical applications to systems out of equilibrium. It introduces the real-time approach to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics and the quantum field theory of non-equilibrium states in general. It offers two ways of learning how to study non-equilibrium states of many-body systems: the mathematical canonical way and an easy intuitive way using Feynman diagrams. The latter provides an easy introduction to the powerful functional methods of field theory, and the use of Feynman diagrams to study classical stochastic dynamics is considered in detail. The developed real-time technique is applied to study numerous phenomena in many-body systems. Complete with numerous exercises to aid self-study, this textbook is suitable for graduate students in statistical mechanics and condensed matter physics.

Richard Osterlind , "The Perfected Center Tear"
#BK01296 | PDF | Pages: 66 | 2.2 MB
The power to read minds - any time, any place - is now in your hands. Richard Osterlind's Surrounded Slow-Motion Center Tear caused quite a stir in the mentalism and magic communities upon its release many years ago.

Now, almost two decades later, Richard Osterlind is releasing the ultimate version of his creation. The Perfected Center Tear goes light years beyond the original version, enabling you to gain secret insights into the hidden thoughts of others with no apparent subterfuge. The spectator writes their information on a small piece of paper and folds it up. You then tear the paper into small bits and place the pieces into the spectator's hand. There is no apparent way that you could possibly have seen the information nor was any part of the paper stolen away. Yet, you are still able to divine the information and reveal it in a startling, dramatic and memorable way. The Perfected Center Tear really is the last word in "rip and read" center tear techniques.
Also in this exciting new book, Richard Osterlind shares his thoughts and ideas on some of mentalism's most basic tools. Nail Writers are discussed in Part Two and billets in Part Three. Part Four is titled "Weird Ones" and here, Osterlind reveals for the first time some of the most unique ideas to come along in magic and mentalism for some time. You'll discover how to perform the classic "Ashes on the Arm" in walk-around situations, how to apparently control fire, even how to cause your spectators to have a complete memory lapse. You'll also learn perhaps the most sensational way to end a book test ever published. If that wasn't enough, Osterlind has added, as a bonus section, his original version of the Center Tear, The Ultimate Center Tear. This originally appeared in Al Mann's great book on the Center Tear, The Purloined Thought. Spiral bound, 66 pages

Richard Osterlind' "The Principles of Magic"

Why can two performers do the same piece of material yet one consistently gets much more enthusiastic audience responses? Is it possible that some of magic's most sacred axioms such as "never repeat a trick" and "never tell an audience what you're going to do" may ultimately be responsible for the huge amount of mediocre magic that abounds?

What is magic's biggest lie?

These are just a few of the topics that Richard Osterlind tackles in what may be his most passionate argument yet for a return to the fundamental principles that once made conjuring one of the most respected of the performing arts. Over the years, these principles have become misinterpreted, misunderstood or largely ignored, resulting in magic's unfortunate and undeserving loss of its rightful place in the public's estimation. The Principles of Magic is Richard Osterlind's warning flag that, as performers, we have to change many of our approaches and attitudes before it's too late and magic vanishes forever.

As a bonus, Richard offers "Inside The Fold," one of the strongest openers possible for a magic or mentalism program. It's a surefire way to gain the respect and attention of any audience immediately.

More than just a reasoned appeal to mystery performers everywhere to once again lift magic to its highest artistic potential, The Principles of Magic is about rediscovering what it was about magic that you first loved...and perhaps relearning how to share its original wonder with others

Richard Osterlind, "The Breakthrough Card System"
English | PDF | Pages: 20 | 1.1 MB
With so many people doing stacked deck work these days, its tough to ignore the jaw-dropping miracles that are possible. What’s even tougher still is to find a stack that wont take you about three years to learn! Luckily, after only my first purchase of a system, I hit gold. And you all know how tough it is to find the winners among all of the waste product on the magic market today. It’s Richard Osterlind's “Breakthrough Card System.

What’s a system you say?

There was a little confusion on my part as far as the difference between a system and a memorized deck/stacked deck were concerned. Is there a difference? Richard clears all this up in the first few pages of this nine-page gem. He then discusses several other systems, as well as memorized decks/stacks. So yes, he does tell you the subtle, yet very important differences.

The content:

Once you start to read the actual card system he has come up with, you will be absolutely delighted! What you are getting here is so much easier than taking a shuffled deck and just memorizing it from top to bottom. You are getting a system that will enable you to straight cut the deck as many times as you wish, and still maintain its stacked order. I will say that again.

Bob Cassidy, "Shadow Hunter + Book of Numbers"
PDF | English | 1.7 MB
One of his secrets is the knowledge that everyday objects are really effects whose instructions have been lost. A glass object on a supermarket shelf might look like a jelly jar, for example, but is that what it really is? He looks at the fluted glass sides that distort the appearance of the contents and realizes that it is a cleverly disguised secret device. He asks himself, “How does it work?

At the checkout counter, while he is waiting to purchase his new discovery, he carefully peruses the mini-magazines that purport to reveal the secrets of numerology and how to harness your psychic powers. Are they simply pieces of bait to hook the gullible, or do they have another purpose? He looks behind their tacky facade and sees what they are really for.

His own appearance is equally deceptive. Most people assume he’s dangerously psychotic.

They are wrong.

He is the Schattenjaeger. His workshop is everywhere.

Dr. Crow’s Book of Numbers

Every two weeks or so, a company called American Media Mini Mags, of Boca Raton, Florida, delivers yet another publication to supermarket checkout counters throughout the country. Featuring such titles as “Is Your Pet Psychic? “Are You Psychic? “How to Talk to Your Cat and “Everyone is Psychic Except You, these and similar “mini-mags have become commonplace..

“Dr. Crow’s Book of Numbers is a mentalist’s utility device that appears to be just another of these ubiquitous releases. It is a sixty-six-page booklet, which you can easily print out on your computer. (Separate .pdf and .doc files, ready for printing, are included in the file that contains this eBook, as are full size versions of the front and back covers.)

Published in 1973 during the sexual revolution, this volume brought women's hardcore sexual fantasies out of the realm of pornography and into the mainstream. Though it no doubt raised many an eyebrow at the time, it doesn't really contain anything that you won't find in an average issue of today's women's magazines. This 25th-anniversary edition contains a new introduction by the author and a few new fantasies. Though tame by 1990s standards, this will still "undoubtedly prove enjoyable to many readers".

Albert Thumann,«Handbook Of Financing Energy Projects»Fairmont Press | ISBN:0881734802 | PDF | 2,66 Mb | 440 Pages | 2004 Year

Most facility managers agree that energy management projects (EMPs) are good investments. Generally, EMPs reduce operational costs, have a low risk/reward ratio, usually improve productivity and even have been shown to improve a firm’s stock price.1 Despite these benefits, many cost-effective EMPs are not implemented due to financial constraints. A study of manufacturing facilities revealed that first-cost and capital constraints represented over 35% of the reasons cost-effective EMPs were not implemented.2 Often, the facility manager does not have enough cash to allocate funding, or can not get budget approval to cover initial costs. Financial arrangements can mitigate a facility’s funding constraints,3 allowing additional energy savings to be reaped.

"Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay
Recorded Books | 2004 | 48000 Hz, Моnо, 768 Кbit/s | 4 x RAR | ~ 235 Mb

"Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is notable for providing a first-person story narrated by a serial killer. Dexter at times claims to be sub-human, but at other times claims to be slightly super-human. He claims to be emotionless due to his status as a monster, however his soft sides throw doubt on these claims. He also makes claims at being both extraordinarily intelligent and athletic, which is more believable as evidenced by his ability to both track and capture other serial killers. As a narrator, Dexter tries to maintain a humorous approach to telling the story, even when the story turns grim. He also uses numerous alliterated phrases, utilizing three words that all start with D's.

~Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment.
Mind you, Dexter's the good guy in this story. And despite his penchant for vivisection, it's hard not to like Dexter as his coldly logical personality struggles to emulate emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring, unremarkable human being. Breakout author Jeff Lindsay's plot is tense and absorbing, but it's the voice of Dexter and his reactions to the other characters that will keep readers glued to Darkly Dreaming Dexter, as well as making it one of the most original and highly recommended serial killer stories in a long time.

Brian Otis, Jan Rabaey, "Ultra-Low Power Wireless Technologies for Sensor Networks "
Springer; 1 edition (April 4, 2007) | ISBN:0387309306 | 184 pages | PDF | 13,3 Mb

Ultra-Low Power Wireless Technologies for Sensor Networks is written for academic and professional researchers designing communication systems for pervasive and low power applications. The main emphasis of the book is on design techniques for low power, highly integrated transceivers. Instead of presenting a single design perspective, this book presents the design philosophies from three diverse research groups, providing three completely different strategies for achieving similar goals. The following transceiver styles are represented: MEMS-assisted super-regenerative transceiver architecture, Ultra-wideband transceiver architecture, Low-IF CMOS transceiver architecture.

The design of RF transceiver circuits and architectures is historically (and notoriously) heuristic. By presenting diverse perspectives on transceiver design, Ultra-Low Power Wireless Technologies for Sensor Networks prepares the reader for the countless design decisions they will be making in their own designs.

Ultra-Low Power Wireless Technologies for Sensor Networks also includes invited chapters: "Ultra-Low Power Radio in a Package Using Ultra-Wideband Technology" by Julien Ryckaert and Steven Sanders from Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre and "Low Energy Wireless Communication" by Ben Cook and Kris Pister from the University of California, Berkeley.

Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) has become the tool to design any type of public security systems, in particular due to the strongly increased security demands for mobile systems. In this book, the authors show how TETRA can be strongly improved and these improvements will most probably be part of future TETRA standards. The areas examined include channel assignment and multiple access techniques, video transmission, wireless LAN integration, and the establishment of multiple wireless mesh networks. Since the requirements for these networks is security, the authors show that innovative techniques such as those based on chaotic signals can be used in order to maximize security.

The book is a vital reference point for researchers with ambition to find the general solution for modern problems of public safety.

Sao-Jie Chen, Yong-Hsiang Hsieh, "IQ Calibration Techniques for CMOS Radio Tranceivers"
Springer | 2006-09-22 | ISBN:1402050828 | 90 pages | PDF | 8,4 Mb

In the market of wireless communication, high data-rate transmission and high spectral efficiency have been the trend. The IEEE 802.11 a/g standards working at 5GHz/2.4GHz ISM bands can support data rate up to 54Mbits/s using OFDM modulation. The newly proposed 802.11n technology now uses 64-QAM to achieve higher spectral efficiency. The DVB and many other systems will also use QAM for its data transmission.

The cost of achieving this higher spectral efficiency using higher order QAM is that the transmitter and receiver requires a higher signal to noise ratio (SNR) with the same level of error rate performance (relative to a baseline BPSK, QPSK and other systems). One of the dominant vectors on SNR degradation is I/Q image rejection (I/Q gains and phases imbalance).

There are a lot of factors that degrade the matching of gains and phases between I/Q signals: the instinct layout mismatch, the random mismatch of the devices, the different temperatures over the I/Q signal paths. IQ Calibration Techniques For CMOS Radio Transceivers describes a fully-analog compensation technique without baseband circuitry to control the calibration process. This book will use an 802.11g transceiver design as an example to give a detailed description on the I/Q gains and phases imbalance auto-calibration mechanism.

Java Data Objects
Publisher: O'Reilly Media | Language: English | ISBN:0596002769 | 380 pages | April 22, 2003 | CHM | 0.9Mb

Java Data Objects revolutionizes the way Java developers interact with databases and other datastores. JDO allows you to store and retrieve objects in a way that's natural to Java programmers. Instead of working with JDBC or EJB's container-managed persistence, you work directly with your Java objects. You don't have to copy data to and from database tables or issue SELECTs to perform queries: your JDO implementation takes care of persistence behind-the-scenes, and you make queries based on the fields of your Java objects, using normal Java syntax.

The result is software that is truly object-oriented: not code that is partially object-oriented, with a large database-shaped lump on the back end. JDO lets you save plain, ordinary Java objects, and does not force you to use different data models and types for dealing with storage. As a result, your code becomes easier to maintain, easier to re-use, and easier to test. And you're not tied to a specific database vendor: your JDO code is entirely database-independent. You don't even need to know whether the datastore is a relational database, an object database, or just a set of files.

This book, written by the JDO Specification Lead and one of the key contributors to the JDO Specification, is the definitive work on the JDO API. It gives you a thorough introduction to JDO, starting with a simple application that demonstrates many of JDO's capabilities. It shows you how to make classes persistent, how JDO maps persistent classes to the database, how to configure JDO at runtime, how to perform transactions, and how to make queries. More advanced chapters cover optional features such as nontransactional access and optimistic transactions. The book concludes by discussing the use of JDO in web applications and J2EE environments.

Whether you only want to read up on an interesting new technology, or are seriously considering an alternative to JDBC or EJB CMP, you'll find that this book is essential. It provides by far the most authoritative and complete coverage available.

Cisco Cookbook
Publisher: O'Reilly Media | English | ISBN:596003676 | 908 pages | July 24, 2003 | CHM | 1.5 Mb

While several publishers (including O'Reilly) supply excellent documentation of router features, the trick is knowing when, why, and how to use these features There are often many different ways to solve any given networking problem using Cisco devices, and some solutions are clearly more effective than others. The pressing question for a network engineer is which of the many potential solutions is the most appropriate for a particular situation. Once you have decided to use a particular feature, how should you implement it? Unfortunately, the documentation describing a particular command or feature frequently does very little to answer either of these questions. Everybody who has worked with Cisco routers for any length of time has had to ask their friends and co-workers for example router configuration files that show how to solve a common problem. A good working configuration example can often save huge amounts of time and frustration when implementing a feature that you've never used before. The Cisco Cookbook gathers hundreds of example router configurations all in one place. As the name suggests, Cisco Cookbook is organized as a series of recipes. Each recipe begins with a problem statement that describes a common situation that you might face. After each problem statement is a brief solution that shows a sample router configuration or script that you can use to resolve this particular problem. A discussion section then describes the solution, how it works, and when you should or should not use it. The chapters are organized by the feature or protocol discussed. If you are looking for information on a particular feature such as NAT, NTP or SNMP, you can turn to that chapter and find a variety of related recipes. Most chapters list basic problems first, and any unusual or complicated situations last. The Cisco Cookbook will quickly become your "go to" resource for researching and solving complex router configuration issues, saving you time and making your network more efficient. It covers:

* Router Configuration and File Management
* Router Management
* User Access and Privilege Levels

Building Embedded Linux Systems
Publisher: O'Reilly Media | Language: English | ISBN:059600222X | 416 pages | April 22, 2003 | CHM | 1 Mb

Linux® is being adopted by an increasing number of embedded systems developers, who have been won over by its sophisticated scheduling and networking, its cost-free license, its open development model, and the support offered by rich and powerful programming tools. While there is a great deal of hype surrounding the use of Linux in embedded systems, there is not a lot of practical information. Building Embedded Linux Systems is the first in-depth, hard-core guide to putting together an embedded system based on the Linux kernel. This indispensable book features arcane and previously undocumented procedures for:

* Building your own GNU development toolchain
* Using an efficient embedded development framework
* Selecting, configuring, building, and installing a target-specific kernel
* Creating a complete target root filesystem
* Setting up, manipulating, and using solid-state storage devices
* Installing and configuring a bootloader for the target
* Cross-compiling a slew of utilities and packages
* Debugging your embedded system using a plethora of tools and techniques

Details are provided for various target architectures and hardware configurations, including a thorough review of Linux's support for embedded hardware. All explanations rely on the use of open source and free software packages. By presenting how to build the operating system components from pristine sources and how to find more documentation or help, this book greatly simplifies the task of keeping complete control over one's embedded operating system, whether it be for technical or sound financial reasons. Author Karim Yaghmour, a well-known designer and speaker who is responsible for the Linux Trace Toolkit, starts by discussing the strengths and weaknesses of Linux as an embedded operating system. Licensing issues are included, followed by a discussion of the basics of building embedded Linux systems. The configuration, setup, and use of over forty different open source and free software packages commonly used in embedded Linux systems are also covered. uClibc, BusyBox, U-Boot, OpenSSH, thttpd, tftp, strace, and gdb are among the packages discussed.

"The World Trade Organization: A Very Short Introduction" by Amrita Narlikar
Oxford University Press | 2005 | English | ISBN:0192806084 | 168 pages | 1,8 MB

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is scarcely ten years old, but even in these early years of its existence it has generated debate, controversy and even outrage. Rulings on beef hormones and tuna-dolphin cases provide graphic examples of how the organization regulates and intrudes into areas of individual consumer choice, ethical preferences, and cultural habits. This deep and far-ranging impact of the WTO on peoples' everyday lives means that it is not just an institution of interest to economists, but to everyone, a fact that was perhaps most graphically illustrated in the popular demonstrations at the 1999 Seattle Ministerial. Such protests have become a regular feature associated with most high-level meetings of the WTO. This VSI will provide a timely and carefully considered explanation of what the WTO is, what it does, and how it goes about executing its tasks. A clear understanding of the mandate, structure and functioning of the WTO is essential to appreciate the controversy behind the organization, and how far it deserves the reputation that it has come to acquire.

"Chaos. A Very Short Introduction" by Leonard Smith
Oxford University Press | 2007 | English | ISBN:0192853783 | 176 pages | 3,9 MB

Leonard Smith's "Chaos" will give you the clearest (but not too painful idea) of the maths involved... There's a lot packed into this little book, and for such a technical exploration it's surprisingly readble and enjoyable - I really wanted to keep turning the pages. Smith also has some excellent words of wisdom about common misunderstandings of chaos theory... One of the best books so far in this useful and informative series.

"Political Philosophy. A Very Short Introduction" by David Miller
Oxford University Press | 2004 | English | ISBN:0192803956 | 160 pages | 0,5 MB

This book introduces readers to the concepts of political philosophy. It starts by explaining why the subject is important and how it tackles basic ethical questions such as 'how should we live together in society?' It looks at political authority, the reasons why we need politics at all, the limitations of politics, and whether there are areas of life that shouldn't be governed by politics. It explores the connections between political authority and justice, a constant theme in political philosophy, and the ways in which social justice can be used to regulate rather than destroy a market economy. David Miller discusses why nations are the natural units of government and whether the rise of multiculturalism and transnational co-operation will change this: will we ever see the formation of a world government?

"Journalism. A Very Short Introduction" by Ian Hargreaves
Oxford University Press | 2005 | English | ISBN:0192806564 | 176 pages | 2,3 MB

Almost everyone reads the newspaper, browses the Internet, listens to the radio or watches TV. Journalism has an indelible effect on our worldview--from the fight against global terrorism to the American presidential elections, celebrity scandal to the latest environmental coups. Hargreaves uses his unique position within the media to examine how we get this information and the many practical, political and professional decisions that the journalist has to make, as part of the process of delivering that information to us. Is journalism the 'first draft of history' or a dumbing-down of our culture and a glorification of the trivial and intrusive? In this intriguing book Ian Hargreaves argues that the core principles of 'freedom of the press' and the necessity of exposing the truth are as vital today as they ever were.

Oxford University Press | 2004 | English | ISBN:0192840975 | 180 pages | 2,8 MB

Global Warming is one of the most controversial scientific issues of the twenty-first century. This is a problem that has serious economic, sociological, geopolitical, political, and personal implications. This Very Short Introduction is an informative, up-to-date, and readable book about the predicted impacts of global warming and the surprises that could be in store for us in the near future. It unpacks the controversies that surround global warming, drawing on material from the recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a huge collaborative study drawing together current thinking on the subject from experts in a range of disciplines, and for the first time presents the findings of the Panel for a general readership. The book also discusses the politics of global warming, and looks at what we can do now to adapt to climate change and mitigate its worst effects.

"Quantum Theory. A Very Short Introduction" by John Polkinghorne
Oxford University Press | 2002 | English | ISBN:0192802526 | 128 pages | 0,8 MB

Quantum Theory is the most revolutionary discovery in physics since Newton. This book gives a lucid, exciting, and accessible account of the surprising and counterintuitive ideas that shape our understanding of the sub-atomic world. It does not disguise the problems of interpretation that still remain unsettled 75 years after the initial discoveries. The main text makes no use of equations, but there is a Mathematical Appendix for those desiring stronger fare. Uncertainty, probabilistic physics, complementarity, the problematic character of measurement, and decoherence are among the many topics discussed.

Creating the "Divine" Artist: From Dante to Michelangelo

Patricia A. Emison, Creating the "Divine" Artist: From Dante to Michelangelo
Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN:9004137092 | 2004 | PDF | 2 MB | 404 pages

Turning a skeptical eye on the idea that Renaissance artists were widely believed to be as utterly admirable as Vasari claimed, this book re-opens the question of why artists were praised and by whom, and specifically why the language of divinity was invoked, a practice the ancients did not license. The epithet ''divino'' is examined in the context of claims to liberal arts status and to analogy with poets, musicians, and other ''uomini famossi.''

The reputations of Michelangelo and Brunelleschi are compared not only with each other but with those of Dante and Ariosto, of Aretino and of the ubiquitous beloved of the sonnet tradition. Nineteenth-century reformulations of the idea of Renaissance artistic divinity are treated in the epilogue, and twentieth-century treatments of the idea of artistic "ingegno" in an appendix.

The Relationship Between Late Antique and Early Medieval Peoples and Kingdoms in the Transformation of the Roman World

H.W. Goetz, J. Jarnut, W. Pohl, Regna and Gentes:
The Relationship Between Late Antique and Early Medieval Peoples and Kingdoms in the Transformation of the Roman World

Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN 9004125248 | 2003 | PDF | 7 MB | 718 pages

“Late Antiquity, no doubt, was a “time of transition or rather transitions. In spite of extensive research on the “Germanic (or, from the Roman point of view, “barbarian) invasions and the successor states of the Roman Empire, comparatively little attention has been paid to the “transition of peoples, or their “developing into kingdoms.

This volume is deliberately not just confined to the “Germanic peoples (Anglo-Saxons, Bavarians, Burgundians, Franks, Langobards, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Visigoths), but compares these with the West and East Roman tradition (Byzantium and Late Antique Spain) and also with non-Germanic peoples (such as Celts, Huns and Avars), and even with the Islamic kingdoms in early medieval Spain. It also seemed advisable to include a comparative survey of the different Germanic laws.
