Language and language problems affect all of us and are an integral part of our social experience.
In An Introduction to Applied Linguistics, Professor Davies takes this simple fact as his starting point and sets out to show that applied linguistics is better understood by doing it than studying or reading about it. Beginning with the history and definitions of applied linguistics, he then looks at the full spectrum of 'institutional' and 'non-institutional' uses of language, spanning not only language learning and teaching but also language as a socio-psychological phenomenon. Whilst setting this practical outlook against the historical background of changing public needs and competing ideologies, Davies shows that a theory can be derived.
The book has been updated throughout. The amendments include a re-examination of the Linguistics Applied-Applied Linguistics opposition, a survey of Applied Linguistics curricula, a consideration of whether there is any difference between the terms Educational Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, further discussion of the role of correctness and of ethics and a new study of the challenges to Applied Linguistics of socio-cultural theory, the theorising of World Englishes and the concept of the native speaker. There is a new final chapter which surveys the whole volume and makes connections with the other volumes in the Series.
The book provides an excellent introduction to the problems and issues that arise in the practice of applied linguistics. Reviewers of the First Edition have described it as 'required reading for all who consider themselves applied linguists', 'an interesting and provocative book', 'obligatory reading for students and researchers in applied linguistics' and 'an admirable description of the nature of applied linguistics, the mentality of its practitioners and the problems that they encounter'. It will repay study by all those working professionally with language and those generally interested in the relationship between linguistics and applied linguistics. Readily accessible to graduate students, it will be of considerable benefit to those undergraduate students who are prepared to persevere.
Key Features:
Introductory text and the foundation volume for the series.
Emphasis on the importance of experience.
Examples of applied linguistics in language teaching and in other settings.
Exercises and demonstrated examples included.

Apress Practical API Design Confessions of a Java Framework Architect 2008

Apress L. P. | ISBN 978-1-4302-0973-7 | Pages: 417 | English | PDF | Size: 3.6 MB | RAR-Commpressed : 2.0 MB | No Password

Prologue: Yet Another Design Book?

“There are more than enough design books in the programming world already,” you might think. In fact, there are so many that it makes sense to ask why I would write—and especially why you would read—yet another one. Particularly, there is the famous Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software,1 about design patterns in object-oriented systems, written by the so-called “Gang of Four,” which is a must read for every developer making use of any object-oriented language. In addition, there are many specialized books describing design patterns, all of them useful when writing specific types of applications. Moreover, there is the unofficial Java programmer’s bible, Effective Java.2 In light of these facts, is there really a need for yet another design book? I believe the need exists. I’ve been designing NetBeans APIs—that is, application programming interfaces—since 1997. I’ve passed through almost all the possible stages a person designing a framework or a shared library can pass. In the early days, I slowly gained a feel for the Java language while trying to apply coding styles that I knew worked well in other languages. Later, I became fluent in Java. At that point, applying various known patterns to my code written in Java seemed so simple, although after a while I realized that things are not always as easy as they seem. I realized that traditional patterns are not appropriate for an object-oriented application framework such as NetBeans, and that you need a completely different set of skills. The oldest NetBeans APIs were designed in 1997. Some of them are still in use and working adequately even after ten years of service, although to be honest, these are not exactly the same APIs as they once were. Over the years, we needed to accommodate new requirements, extend library functionality, and fix beginners’ mistakes. Despite that, the API clients that compiled their code then are still able to execute their code, even with today’s latest versions of those libraries. This is possible because we always tried, as far as reasonably possible, to maintain backward compatibility. As a result, the programs written against our decade-old libraries are likely to work even in their current versions. This preservation of investment— that is, our decision to let our libraries evolve in a backward-compatible way—is something not seen in common design books, at least not in the ones I’ve read so far. It’s not that all Net- Beans APIs were evolved without problems, but I’ve come to believe that the NetBeans team has now mastered this skill to a high degree, and also that this skill is widely needed among other groups of programmers. That is why a large part of this book talks about retaining backward compatibility and about special API design patterns that produce code suitable for maintaining in a backward-compatible way. Prologue: Yet Another Design Book?
The other challenge we faced when working on the NetBeans project was scalability of teamwork. In those early days, back in 1997, I wrote the APIs on my own. The other NetBeans engineers “just” wrote the code; that is, they provided user interfaces and implementations for various parts of the NetBeans IDE, while continually making use of the APIs that I provided. Unsurprisingly, this created a bottleneck. I came to realize that the number of people working on various NetBeans IDE features had grown to a capacity where one “architect” was unable to handle the demand for APIs. Over time, change was urgently needed. We needed a majority of the NetBeans development team to be able to design their own APIs. At the same time, we also wanted to maintain a certain level of consistency between the APIs created by different people. This turned into the biggest problem, not because developers didn’t want to be consistent, but because I wasn’t able to explain to them what I meant by consistency. Maybe you know the
feeling of knowing how to do something, without knowing how to explain it coherently. That was my situation: I thought I knew how to design APIs, but it took many months before I managed to formulate the most important constraints that I wanted others to follow.

Cambridge Press RFID Technology and Applications

Cambridge University Press | ISBN 978-1-4302-0973-7 | Pages: 244 | English | PDF | Size: 1.7 MB | RAR-Commpressed : 2.9 MB | No Password

Introduction
The market for radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is growing rapidly, with significant opportunities to add value, but also, because of the challenging issues that are identified in the chapters that follow, many opportunities for failure. This book brings together pioneering RFID academic research principals to analyze engineering issues that have hampered the deployment of RFID and to share ‘‘best practices’’ learnings from their work, building on the tradition of the Auto-ID Labs. The Auto-ID Labs consortium of leading universities around the world includes Auto-ID Labs at Cambridge University, Fudan University, Keio University, the University at St. Gallen and the ETH Zu .. rich, the University at Adelaide and, most recently, the ICU, South Korea.1 The principal investigators represented here have conceived, obtained funding for, and executed research projects using RFID technology. The authors share their experience in the design, test, prototyping, and piloting of RFID systems, both to
help others avoid ‘‘reinventing the wheel’’ and to set the stage for what is next in RFID. Because RFID technology has evolved from proprietary systems operating at different frequencies in jurisdictions with different RF regulatory restrictions, most RFID work has been divided into communities operating at one frequency or another. In RFID Technology and Applications we bring together principal investigators with experience in passive RFID systems across a range of frequencies including UHF 860–960 MHz (EPC GenII/ISO 18000–6c) and HF 13.56 MHz (ISO 18000-3),2 but also, breaking with precedent, we include experts

1 The Auto-ID Labs are the leading global network of academic research laboratories in the field of
networked RFID. The labs comprise seven of the world’s most renowned research universities
located on four different continents Code: (www.autoidlabs.org). 2 ISO specification for RFID under the standard 18000-1 Part 1 – Generic Parameters for the Air
Interface for Globally Accepted Frequencies at frequencies per below can be obtained from Code: http://www.iso.org/iso/en/CombinedQueryResult .
18000-2 Part 2 – Parameters for Air Interface Communications below 135 kHz
18000-3 Part 3 – Parameters for Air Interface Communications at 13.56 MHz
18000-4 Part 4 – Parameters for Air Interface Communications at 2.45 GHz
18000-5 Part 5 – Parameters for Air Interface Communications at 5.8 GHz (withdrawn)

in active (with power) RFID systems. The inclusion of active RFID with passive systems allows us to explore a wider range of technologies for how one might best add ‘‘real-world awareness,’’ such as location and sensor data, to the information about identified objects – both of which are high-growth markets, as cited in the Preface. Researchers gathered in this collection of essays have been selected for their experience as principal investigators and RFID lab directors and from their participation in the RFID Academic Convocations that are being held around the world with industry and government leaders to explore issues requiring greater research collaboration.3 This chapter provides an historical introduction to RFID together with an overview of the standards and regulatory frameworks that cross frequencies, protocols, and processes to govern how we engineer RFID systems to operate in
different jurisdictions. Recent breakthroughs in global standards and regulatory initiatives in European and Asian countries have freed unlicensed UHF radio spectrum for use by RFID systems, making this a seminal moment to examine new system design possibilities. During the spring of 2007 the conditional approval of UHF as well as HF frequencies for RFID applications in China and Europe, the adoption of a variety of technical standards for passive and active RFID systems into the International Standards Organization (ISO) process, the availability of much of this technology under Reasonable and Non Discriminatory Licensing (RAND – see Section 15.7) terms, and the release of the Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) software specifications for exchanging data about products from EPCglobal all promise to make it possible to communicate more effectively about the condition and location of products. The chapters that follow explore the underlying technology and growing markets for assettracking and cold-chain and condition-based monitoring across entire supply chains and product lifecycles. The technology chapters begin with a deep dive into the design of low-power passive and active RFID transponders (tags) and RF performance in near-field and far-field modes over HF and UHF frequencies. The ‘‘Swiss cheese effect’’ of RF ‘‘null’’ zones caused by multipath effects, as well as ‘‘ghost tags,’’ the bane of indoor RF systems, are introduced by Hao Min, Director of the Auto-ID Lab at Fudan University in Shanghai (Ch. 2), together with recommendations for addressing these issues at a tag and, in subsequent chapters, at the system and supply chain network level. The RFID applications chapters of this book present hands-on research experience of principal investigators in specific markets and illustrate the promise they see for changing the way businesses is done. ‘‘How does the world change,’’ observes Hao Min while working on his contribution to this 18000-6 Part 6 – Parameters for Air Interface

If we contrast this to the internet today, information about people and events are recorded and Google is used to search information about people and events. If the information (profile) of every object (include people) is recorded, what will the internet be like?’’ One of the first issues RFID project managers face is the lack of diagnostic tools to characterize RF environments and RF tag performance on specific products, short of working within a fully instrumented anechoic chamber and using finite state analysis to simulate indoor RF propagation fields. As Larry Bodony, one of the members of the MIT Enterprise Forum RFID Special Interest Group commented recently on his experience implementing RFID container tracking systems with Lockheed Martin/Savi Networks, ‘‘RFID is like an Ouija Board, where you address one RF problem and another issue pops up somewhere else’’ [1]. Like the Ouija Board, RFID’s roots can be traced to the period
of spiritualist practices in the mid nineteenth century and to Maxwell, who first predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves. In the chapters that follow we ask the following question: ‘‘what are the RFID engineering issues that need to be addressed to fulfill the promise of increased visibility and collaboration?’’ As an organizing principle for the chapters that follow, control systems methodology is introduced as an approach to addressing RFID engineering issues. The theme of control systems methodology for systems design spans recent work by co-editors Sanjay Sarma, co-founder of the Auto-ID Center, on ‘‘Six Sigma Supply Chains’’ [2], as well as by John Williams, Director of the Auto-ID Labs at MIT, on ‘‘Modeling Supply Chain Network Traffic’’ (Ch. 7).

Facts on File Geometry Handbook

Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication Data | ISBN 0-8160-4875-4 | Pages: 289 | English | PDF | Size: 1.37 MB

INTRODUCTION
Geometry is the study of shape, form, and space, and is of interest for its own sake as well as for its many applications in the sciences and the arts. Geometry is an integral part of mathematics, drawing upon all other areas in its development, and in turn contributing to the development of other parts of mathematics. The roots of geometry lie in many different cultures, including the ancient Vedic, Egyptian, Babylonian, Chinese, and Greek civilizations. The development of geometry as a deductive science began with Thales and reached maturity with the Elements of Euclid around 300 B.C.E. In the Elements, Euclid sets out a list of statements called postulates and common notions, which are fundamental, self-evident truths of geometry. These statements express common experiences and intuitions about space: It is flat, it extends infinitely in all directions, and it has everywhere the same structure. From the postulates and common notions, Euclid derives 465 propositions that form the body of Euclidean geometry. Euclid’s presentation is systematic, beginning with simple statements that depend only on the postulates and common notions and concluding with intricate and exquisite propositions. Each proposition is supported by a logical deduction or proof, based only on the postulates, the common notions, and other propositions that have already been proved. Because of its clarity and logical rigor, the axiomatic method of Euclidean geometry soon became the model for how a discipline of knowledge should be organized and developed. The theorems of Euclidean geometry came to be regarded as absolute truth and assumed a special role as the crowning achievement of human thought. Trying to emulate the success of Euclid, philosophers and scientists alike sought to find the self-evident principles from which their disciplines could be derived. During the 19th century, however, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometries brought an end to the special and unique role of Euclidean geometry. Nicolai Lobachevsky, János Bolyai, and Bernhard Riemann showed that there are other geometries, just as systematic and just as rigorous as Euclidean geometry, but with surprisingly different conclusions. These new geometries revolutionized the way mathematicians viewed mathematics and the nature of mathematical truth. A mathematical theory must be based on a collection of postulates or axioms, which are not self-evident truths, but instead are rules assumed to be true only in the context of a specific theory. Thus, the axioms of Euclidean geometry are different from those of elliptic geometry or hyperbolic geometry. A mathematical theorem, proven by logical deduction, is not true, but rather only valid, and even then valid only in the realm governed by the axioms from which it was derived. Different axioms give rise to different, even contradictory, theorems. The discovery of non-Euclidean geometries strengthened the study of geometry, giving it new vigor and vitality and opening new avenues of investigation. However, non-Euclidean geometries were
only one aspect of the development of geometry in the 19th century, which was truly a golden age for geometry, with projective geometry, affine geometry, vector spaces, and topology all emerging as important and independent branches of geometry. Today, after more gradual growth during the first part of the 20th century, geometry is once again flourishing in a new golden age. There are many factors supporting this renewed interest in geometry. Computers have become both an inspiration and tool for geometry, responsible for computational geometry, computer graphics, and robotics. Many newer areas of geometry, such as combinatorial geometry, discrete geometry, differential geometry, algebraic topology, dynamical systems and fractals, graph theory, and knot theory are the natural unfoldment of discoveries of earlier centuries. Other areas of current interest have their origin in applications: crystallography, frameworks, minimal surfaces, sphere packings, and the string theories of modern physics. All these areas and more are included in this handbook, which will serve students of geometry, beginner or advanced, and all those who encounter geometric ideas in their pursuit of the sciences, arts, technology, or other areas of mathematics.
Euclidean geometry, trigonometry, projective geometry, analytic geometry, non-Euclidean geometry, vectors, differential geometry, topology, computational geometry, combinatorial geometry, knot theory, and graph theory are just some of the branches of geometry to be found here. The selection of topics has focused on what a student would first encounter in any of these areas. Terms from other parts of mathematics that are needed to understand geometric terms are included in the glossary, but the reader is referred to The Facts On File Algebra Handbook and The Facts On File Calculus Handbook for a more comprehensive discussion of these topics. Nowhere is it assumed here that the reader has studied calculus.

Introduction to Partial Differential Equations

Cambridge University Press | ISBN 978-0-521-84886-2 | Pages: 385 | English | PDF | Size: 1.87 MB | RAR-Commpressed : 2.28 MB | No Password

This book presents an introduction to the theory and applications of partial differential equations (PDEs). The book is suitable for all types of basic courses on PDEs, including courses for undergraduate engineering, sciences and mathematics students, and for ?rst-year graduate courses as well. Having taught courses on PDEs for many years to varied groups of students from engineering, science and mathematics departments, we felt the need for a textbook that is concise, clear, motivated by real examples and mathematically rigorous. We therefore wrote a book that covers the foundations of the theory of PDEs. This theory has been developed over the last 250 years to solve the most fundamental problems in engineering, physics and other sciences. Therefore we think that one should not treat PDEs as an abstract mathematical discipline; rather it is a ?eld that is closely related to real-world problems. For this reason we strongly emphasize throughout the book the relevance of every bit of theory and every practical tool to some speci?c application. At the same time, we think that the modern engineer or scientist should understand the basics of PDE theory when attempting to solve speci?c problems that arise in applications. Therefore we took great care to create a balanced exposition of the theoretical and applied facets of PDEs. The book is ?exible enough to serve as a textbook or a self-study book for a large class of readers. The ?rst seven chapters include the core of a typical one-semester course. In fact, they also include advanced material that can be used in a graduate course. Chapters 9 and 11 include additional material that together with the ?rst seven chapters ?ts into a typical curriculum of a two-semester course. In addition, Chapters 8 and 10 contain advanced material on Green’s functions and the calculus of variations. The book covers all the classical subjects, such as the separation of variables technique and Fourier’s method (Chapters 5, 6, 7, and 9), the method of characteristics (Chapters 2 and 9),
and Green’s function methods (Chapter 8). At the same time we introduce the basic theorems that guarantee that the problem at hand is well de?ned (Chapters 2–10), and we took care to include modern ideas such as variational methods (Chapter 10) and numerical methods (Chapter 11). The ?rst eight chapters mainly discuss PDEs in two independent variables. Chapter 9 shows how the methods of the ?rst eight chapters are extended and enhanced to handle PDEs in higher dimensions. Generalized and weak solutions are presented in many parts of the book. Throughout the book we illustrate the mathematical ideas and techniques by applying them to a large variety of practical problems, including heat conduction, wave propagation, acoustics, optics, solid and ?uid mechanics, quantum mechanics, communication, image processing, musical instruments, and traf?c ?ow. We believe that the best way to grasp a new theory is by considering examples and solving problems. Therefore the book contains hundreds of examples and problems,
most of them at least partially solved. Extended solutions to the problems are available for course instructors using the book from Code: solutions@cambridge.org We also include dozens of drawing and graphs to explain the text better and to demonstrate visually some of the special features of certain solutions. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the calculus of functions in several variables, with linear algebra and with the basics of ordinary differential equations. The book is almost entirely self-contained, and in the very few places where we cannot go into details, a reference is provided. The book is the culmination of a slow evolutionary process. We wrote it during several years, and kept changing and adding material in light of our experience in the classroom. The current text is an expanded version of a book in Hebrew that the authors published in 2001, which has been used successfully at Israeli universities and colleges since then. Our cumulative expertise of over 30 years of teaching PDEs at several universities, including Stanford University, UCLA, Indiana University and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology guided to us to create a text that enhances not just technical competence but also deep understanding of PDEs.We are grateful to our many students at these universities with whom we had the pleasure of studying this fascinating subject. We hope that the readers will also learn to enjoy it. We gratefully acknowledge the help we received from a number of individuals. Kristian Jenssen from North Carolina State University, Lydia Peres and Tiferet Saadon from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and Peter Sternberg from Indiana University read portions of the draft and made numerous comments and suggestions for improvement. Raya Rubinstein prepared the drawings, whileYishai Pinchover and Aviad Rubinstein assisted with the graphs. Despite our best efforts, we surely did not discover all the mistakes in the draft. Therefore we encourage observant readers to send us their comments at Code: pincho@techunix.technion.ac.il We will maintain a webpage with a list of errata at

OReilly Learning the vi and Vim Editors 7th Edition

O'Reilly Media,Inc | ISBN: 1058-6180 | English | PDF | 494 Pages | Size 4.00 MB

Introduction
There's nothing that hard-core Unix and Linux users are more fanatical about than their text editor. Editors are the subject of adoration and worship, or of scorn and ridicule, depending upon whether the topic of discussion is your editor or someone else's. vi has been the standard editor for close to 30 years. Popular on Unix and Linux, it has a growing following on Windows systems, too. Most experienced system administrators cite vi as their tool of choice. And since 1986, this book has been the guide for vi. However, Unix systems are not what they were 30 years ago, and neither is this book. While retaining all the valuable features of previous editions, the 7th edition of Learning the vi and vim Editors has been expanded to include detailed information on vim, the leading vi clone. vim is the default version of vi on most Linux systems and on Mac OS X, and is available for many other operating systems too. With this guide, you learn text editing basics and advanced tools for both editors,
such as multi-window editing, how to write both interactive macros and scripts to extend the editor, and power tools for programmers -- all in the easy-to-follow style that has made this book a classic. Learning the vi and vim Editors includes: A complete introduction to text editing with vi: How to move around vi in a hurry Beyond the basics, such as using buffers vi's global search and replacement Advanced editing, including customizing vi and executing Unix commands How to make full use of vim: Extended text objects and more powerful regular expressions Multi-window editing and powerful vim scripts How to make full use of the GUI version of vim, called gvim vim's enhancements for programmers, such as syntax highlighting, folding and extended tags Coverage of three other popular vi clones -- nvi, elvis, and vile -- is also included. You'll find several valuable appendixes, including an alphabetical quick reference to both vi and ex mode commands for regular vi and for vim, plus an updated appendix on vi and the Internet. Learning either vi or vim is required knowledge if you use Linux or Unix, and in either case, reading this book is essential. After reading this book, the choice of editor will be obvious for you too.

OReilly Building a Web 2.0 Portal with ASP NET 3.5 Jan 2008

O’Reilly Media, Inc. | ISBN-13: 978-0-596-51050-3| English | PDF | 310 Pages | RAR Compressed 3.87 MB | No Password

Preface
Web 2.0 Ajax portals are among the most successful web applications of the Web 2.0 generation. iGoogle and Pageflakes are the pioneers in this market and were among the first to show Ajax’s potential. Portal sites give users a personal homepage with one-stop access to information and entertainment from all over the Web, as well as dashboards that deliver powerful content aggregation for enterprises. A Web 2.0 portal can be used as a content repository just like a SharePoint or DotNetNuke site. Because they draw on Ajax to deliver rich, client-side interactivity, Web 2.0 portals improve usability and provide faster performance compared to non-Ajax web sites. Also, because portals are commonly composed of widgets (small plug-and-play type applications), there’s no limit to how much functionality you can provide, simply by adding more and more widgets. Their use also keeps the core architecture of the portal clean and simple because widgets are developed and maintained independently. DotNetNuke is a great
example of a widget-powered portal concept that has created a new era in highly decoupled enterprise web applications. This book takes a fresh new look at portal solutions using the latest cutting-edge technologies from Microsoft. In developing personal, educational, community, and enterprise portals, I have had to deal with many interesting design, development, scalability, performance, and production challenges. In this book, I have tried to show solutions to some of these challenges by building an open source Web 2.0 Portal prototype, and then walk you through through the design and architectural challenges, advanced Ajax concepts, performance optimization techniques, and serverside scalability challenges involved. The prototype also shows you practical implementation of the cutting-edge .NET 3.0 and 3.5 frameworks, including LINQ and the Windows Workflow Foundation. Moreover, it explores Ajax web site details, browser performance and compatibility challenges, security challenges, and ASP.NET AJAX
framework advantages and shortcomings. The project is available at Code: www.dropthings.com . Dropthings is an open source example of what can be done with the new technologies from Microsoft. It is intended for educational purposes only. Although it does come close to real web portal (like Pageflakes) in terms of its feature set, performance, security, and scalability, it does a good job of showing you how to put together several new technologies in a working web application.

Who This Book Is for
This book is primarily for ASP.NET 2.0 or 3.5 developers who have already developed one or more web applications and have a good grip on JavaScript and ASP.NET 2.0. The reader is also expected to have basic understanding of ASP.NET AJAX. This information is available in numerous publications, including several from O’Reilly that are listed in the Roadmap page for this book. Intermediate developers, looking for ways to gain insight into web development challenges and learn how a successful production web site is built and run, will greatly benefit from this book. Advanced developers will learn how to build a rock solid web application that can withstand millions of hits every day around the clock, survive sudden scalability demands, prevent hack attempts and denial of service attacks, deploy and run a web site on a distributed cluster environment utilizing Content Delivery Networks (CDN), face real-life production challenges, and much more.

OReilly C Sharp 3.0 Design Patterns Jan 2008

O’Reilly Media, Inc. | ISBN 13: 978-0-596-52773-0 | English | PDF | 316 Pages | Size: 2.75 MB

Why I Wrote This Book
In 2002, Microsoft Research hosted an international meeting in Cambridge, U.K., to reveal its Rotor system, which would bring C# and .NET to non-Windows programmers. Once back home, writing software, papers, and a book on the topic, I came to realize that we had witnessed the beginning of a real revolution in programming. Since the advent of Java in 1996, programming had become platform-independent: with Java byte-code, programs could run anywhere. This independence, however, extended only to programs written in the Java language. .NET, on the other hand, was language-independent: it allowed programs in different languages to interact, but, up until that day, only on Windows. In the ensuing five years, new platforms have come to support .NET (Mono, for example) and new hardware has come to support Intel chips (on which Windows runs). The result is that .NET now runs almost anywhere. Consequently, expertise in C# programming is a very transportable skill to acquire. But C# keeps improving as a language, and we are currently at the beginning of a new leapforward into C# 3.0, which offers enormous benefits in terms of productivity and ease of programming. Having already written an introductory C# text in 2003,* I realized that the benefits of the new features announced now in 2007, four years later, would be felt at a much more advanced level of software development. I wanted to write a second book that introduced C# 3.0 to developers who already knew the basic language—but what would be the formula that could introduce a language and address a reader’s needs of precision, examples, and a heavy dose of reality? Enter design patterns. Design patterns encapsulate common, accepted, and proven ways of using language features together. They form a level of discourse at a higher plane, and they exercise and promote good programming practices. However, there is an element of unreality surrounding design patterns, and one gets the impression that they are more talked about than used. I wanted to change that and make design
patterns really accessible to ordinary programmers, using the best language for them: C# 3.0. The result is this book.

Who This Book Is For
If you are a programmer who loves your code, for whom every line has a precise meaning and every feature has a correct place, this book is for you. It will help you with your primary job of making your code correct, elegant, extensible, and efficient. If you serve the business ends of your organization by focusing on the quality of your code, you need a book like C# 3.0 Design Patterns. Knowledge about design patterns is also a big stepforward for those working upfrom low-level programmers to software engineers and architects. Through reading this book, you will acquire skills in:
• Programming design patterns
• Basic UML modeling notation for representing patterns
• Selecting patterns appropriate for given scenarios and comparing alternative implementations
• Using advanced language features of C# 3.0 to realize patterns efficiently and elegantly
Although not written as a textbook, C# 3.0 Design Patterns could fit in very well for a mid-degree course on design patterns or advanced programming. The diagrams and code for all the patterns and associated examples and case studies in this book can be found on the book’s web site, Code: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/9780596527730.

Introduction
The theories and subject matter touched in this paper is extensive but far from complete. It is an accumulation of many thought experiments resulting in many theories over the course of almost two decades compiled together into a single document with few derived calculations. As a whole, this paper is only an initial attempt at formulating these theories in a clear and logical manner. For this reason alone, this paper is considered general, a work in progress and why the title is post-fixed with the versioning letter “A”. This collective theory is meant to compliment Newton’s, Einstein’s, Plank’s and Bohr’s theories with a fresh new perspective. These theories as a whole are in homage to all the great masters who have been a huge influence in my development since very early childhood, my college and university professors, but especially my high school physics teacher Mr. Mohammed who lit a burning flame of curiosity in physics and who always made time to entertain my questions and concepts with a humble and pleasant disposition. It is with great hope that this collective theory, its theorized applications and there from its derivatives will aide Humankind in achieving balance with itself, the Universe and Existence.

INTRODUCTION
The Pillars of Creationism
This book examines the creationism/evolution controversy from a broad perspective. You will read about science, religion, education, law, history, and even some currentevents, because all of these topics are relevant to an understanding of this controversy. In this introduction, we will examine three antievolutionist contentions that provide a framework for thinking about this complex controversy. These “Pillars of Creationism” include scientific, religious, and educational arguments, respectively, and have been central to the antievolution movement since at least the Scopes trial in 1925. As you read the following chapters and selections, it may be helpful to keep the “Pillars of Creationism” in mind.
EVOLUTION IS A “THEORY IN CRISIS”
In 1986 New Zealand physician Michael Denton wrote a book titled Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, which became, and remains, very popular in creationist circles. Denton claimed that there were major scientific flaws in the theory of evolution. This idea is not new: throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, there was no shortage of claims that evolution scientifically was on its last legs, as documented delightfully by Glenn Morton on his Web site Code: http://home.entouch.net/dmd/ moreandmore.htm . Of course, such claims continue to be made in the twenty-first century as well. Ironically, Denton has rejected the antievolutionary claims of some of his readers, and describes his 1986 book as opposing Darwinism (i.e., evolution through natural selection), rather than rejecting evolution itself (Denton 1999). Through constant reiteration in creationist literature and in letters to the editor in newspapers around the country, the idea that evolution is shaky science is constantly spread to the general public, which by and large is unaware of the theoretical and evidentiary strength of evolution. Evolution as a science is discussed in chapter 2.

SERIES FOREWORD
The interface between psychology, religion, and spirituality has been of great interest to scholars for a century. In the last three decades a broadpopular appetite has developed for books which make practical sense out of the sophisticated research on these three subjects. Freud expressed an essentially deconstructive perspective on this matter and indicated that he sawthe relationship between human psychology and religion to be a destructive interaction. Jung, on the other hand, was quite sure that these three aspects of the human spirit, psychology, religion, and spirituality, were constructively and inextricably linked. Anton Boisen and Seward Hiltner derived much insight from both Freud and Jung, as well as from Adler and Reik, while pressing the matter forward with ingenious skill and illumination. Boisen and Hiltner fashioned a framework within which the quest for a sound and sensible defi nition of the interface between psychology, religion, and spirituality might best be described or expressed.1 We
are in their debt. This series of General Interest Books, so wisely urged by Greenwood Press, and particularly by its editors, Deborah Carvalko and Suzanne I. Staszak-Silva, intends to defi ne the terms and explore the interface of psychology, religion, and spirituality at the operational level of daily human experience. Each volume of the series identifi es, analyzes, describes, and evaluates the full range of issues, of both popular and professional interest, that deal with the psychological factors at play (1) in the way religion takes shape and is expressed, (2) in the way spirituality functions within human persons and shapes both religious formation and expression, and (3) in the ways that............................................

Introduction
No matter what field you work in, you cannot help but notice the impact that the Internet has had on society. It has opened up opportunities and markets that people only dreamed of before. As with any new technology, there is always a positive and negative aspect. The positive side is the tremendous business opportunities. The negative side is the huge security risk that is now posed to so many companies, yet few companies are truly aware of the potential danger. It’s like getting in a brand new car and driving down the road at 80mph, only to realize that the engineers did not equip the car with breaks. If this did occur and a large number of people bought the car, the net result would be a high number of fatalities because the proper breaking was not built into the car. The same thing is occurring with the Internet. Now that companies have invested millions of dollars in this new infrastructure, they realize that security was not properly built in, and now their entire companies are vulnerable. The point of this book is that there is no way to properly protect a company’s network unless you know what you’re up against. Only by understanding how attacks work and what an attacker does to compromise a machine can a company position itself so that it can be properly protected. If someone tells you to protect a site against a certain threat and you don’t understand what the threat is or how it works, you cannot protect against it. Knowing what an attacker can do to compromise your system and what that compromise looks like on a network allows you to build a secure system. Although this book goes into techniques used to hack a machine and perform common exploits, it is not meant to be a handbook on how to hack. It is meant to help a company properly close up its vulnerabilities and protect its computers. I want to make you aware of the tools that are available and how easy they are to use, and I want to show you what a company must do to have a secure network.

incoln is a physicist and the collaborating author on numerous research papers at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), where he investigates high-energy particles. A veteran of many popular talks on physics, he charmingly relates the tale of humankind's almost insatiable curiosity about the ultimate nature of nature and the quest to determine the basic particles of matter. His style is engaging and obviously directed to informed lay readers, but the more scientifically minded will find it equally appealing. Still, at over 500 pages, it is not light reading. If digested with the notion that this topic is presented in a broad swath, both historically and scientifically, and not meant to be definitive, the work offers readers an appreciation of the investigative procedure, the accumulated body of research, and the people who did the investigating. Recommended for public and academic collections.

The pioneering work of Edwin T. Jaynes in the field of statistical physics, quantum optics, and probability theory has had a significant and lasting effect on the study of many physical problems, ranging from fundamental theoretical questions through to practical applications such as optical image restoration. Physics and Probability is a collection of papers in these areas by some of his many colleagues and former students, based largely on lectures given at a symposium celebrating Jaynes' contributions, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday and retirement as Wayman Crow Professor of Physics at Washington University. The collection contains several authoritative overviews of current research on maximum entropy and quantum optics, where Jaynes' work has been particularly influential, as well as reports on a number of related topics. In the concluding paper, Jaynes looks back over his career, and gives encouragement and sound advice to young scientists. All those engaged in research on any of the topics
discussed in these papers will find this a useful and fascinating collection, and a fitting tribute to an outstanding and innovative scientist.

Introduction
Hundreds of programming languages are in use today--scripting languages for Internet commerce, user interface programming tools, spreadsheet macros, page format specification languages, and many others. Designing a programming language is a metaprogramming activity that bears certain similarities to programming in a regular language, with clarity and simplicity even more important than in ordinary programming. This comprehensive text uses a simple and concise framework to teach key ideas in programming language design and implementation. The book's unique approach is based on a family of syntactically simple pedagogical languages that allow students to explore programming language concepts systematically. It takes as its premise and starting point the idea that when language behaviors become incredibly complex, the description of the behaviors must be incredibly simple.

Introduction
Circuit design can be considered an art based on the fundamental concepts we learn in electrical and electronic engineering. With the unprecedentedadvancement of semiconductors, today a designer has many choices of components. Although keeping track of all the new integrated circuits (ICs)appearing on the market is a difficult task, it may be particularly useful if design challenges include miniaturization of the overall product. Passive components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transformers need to be mixed effectively and optimally with semiconductor components in building a particular circuit. In this exercise of “design and development,” the designer needs to work with the delicate balance between the real or the analog world, where signals can take any value within a given range, and the digital world, where we make use of processors, memories, and other peripheral devices to accurately process information. To summarize the need for the delicate balance required, it may be appropriate to
cite Jim Williams, a well-known linear circuit designer: “Wonderful things are going on in the forgotten land between ONE and ZERO. This is real electronics.” Within the past quarter century, a new domain of semiconductors has appeared that links the analog and digital worlds. That is the world of mixed signal electronics, where analog-to-digital conversion, and vice versa, occurs. In this book, emphasis is placed on the analog world of electronics together with the mixed signal domain of design. In dealing with the challenges we face in the process of design and development, a few essential fundamentals need to be reviewed. This chapter reviews the essentials so that designers can comfortably link theory and practice. The reader can find details related to theory and analysis in standard textbooks used for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Description:
This was the first book that got me started off on C programming, and I would strongly recommend it, provided you dont mind overlooking the authors limited lingual skills and choice of words. (Thats the only reason I have rated this with 4 stars instead of a full five.) The exercises themselves are very interesting and challenging and let you test your mettle. All in all, a very good beginner level book to begin your career in C programming.

JA Nagya - Luxury & Personality (2 in 1)
Inspired from antique and modern patterns blending, the JA Nagya delivers a newly state-of-art concept for your Joomla! sites. While the Default style gives your site with a classical luxury & aristocratic feeling, the BlueJean style can turn your website into strong and impressive personality. And a surprise is that BlueJean pick a very daily and close to life concept: Jeans & Leather.

If one finds a design for a long lasting ancient hotel, Default color theme of JA Nagya should be a good match to remind the audience of strong impression. For a personal blog site, the BlueJeans,on the contrary will give your visitors a good impression of a distinguished style.

Another good thing is that JA Nagya does not use any extra extension, the core Joomla Newsflash module in header spotlight area is enough to capture the attention of audience at their very first glance. It's hard to believe that the template is 101% core Joomla (except for JA Login). Sometimes, simplicity works and it is also a strong feature of Joomla

An Overview of JA Nagya features:
- Artistic and clean Design
- 3 columns layout based template
- 2 color options: default and Bluejeen
- Tableless design and 100% CSS-based
- Joomla 1.5.x compatible

Synopsis:

Thomas L. Friedman’s no. 1 bestseller "The World Is Flat" has helped millions of readers to see globalization in a new way. Now Friedman brings a fresh outlook to the crises of destabilizing climate change and rising competition for energy—both of which could poison our world if we do not act quickly and collectively. His argument speaks to all of us who are concerned about the state of America in the global future.

Friedman proposes that an ambitious national strategy— which he calls “Geo-Greenism”—is not only what we need to save the planet from overheating; it is what we need to make America healthier, richer, more innovative, more productive, and more secure.

As in The World Is Flat, he explains a new era—the Energy-Climate era—through an illuminating account of recent events. He shows how 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the flattening of the world by the Internet (which brought 3 billion new consumers onto the world stage) have combined to bring climate and energy issues to Main Street. But they have not gone very far down Main Street; the much-touted “green revolution” has hardly begun. With all that in mind, Friedman sets out the clean-technology breakthroughs we, and the world, will need; he shows that the ET (Energy Technology) revolution will be both transformative and disruptive; and he explains why America must lead this revolution—with the first Green President and a Green New Deal, spurred by the Greenest Generation.
