Storage and conversion are critical components of important energy-related technologies. "Advanced Batteries: Materials Science Aspects" employs materials science concepts and tools to describe the critical features that control the behavior of advanced electrochemical storage systems.
This volume focuses on the basic phenomena that determine the properties of the components, i.e. electrodes and electrolytes, of advanced systems, as well as experimental methods used to study their critical parameters. This unique materials science approach utilizes concepts and methodologies different from those typical in electrochemical texts, offering a fresh, fundamental and tutorial perspective of advanced battery systems.
Graduate students, scientists and engineers interested in electrochemical energy storage and conversion will find "Advanced Batteries: Materials Science Aspects" a valuable reference.

Recent developments in the technology of silicon nanocrystals and silicon nanostructures, where quantum-size effects are important, are systematically described including examples of device applications. Due to the strong quantum confinement effect, the material properties are freed from the usual indirect- or direct-bandgap regime, and the optical, electrical, thermal, and chemical properties of these nanocrystalline and nanostructured semiconductors are drastically changed from those of bulk silicon. In addition to efficient visible luminescence, various other useful material functions are induced in nanocrystalline silicon and periodic silicon nanostructures. Some novel devices and applications, in fields such as photonics (electroluminescence diode, microcavity, and waveguide), electronics (single-electron device, spin transistor, nonvolatile memory, and ballistic electron emitter), acoustics, and biology, have been developed by the use of these quantum-induced functions in ways different from the conventional scaling principle for ULSI.

This book contains a collection of the best papers presented at the VII International Conference on Interacción Persona-Ordenador (IPO), Human-Computer Interaction in Spanish, which took place in Puertollano (Ciudad Real) on November 13th-17th, 2006. In its seventh edition this conference has become a multidisciplinary forum for the discussion and dissemination of novelty research in Human-Computer Interaction. The main goal of Interacción 2006 was to expand the conference scope with internationally recognised invited speakers. Other goals such as enriching the relationship between industry and academia, and incorporating workshops and tutorials of quality to the conference structure were also achieved.
This book is organised according to the main areas of both basic and applied research that were presented at the conference. These areas were: Ergonomics and Human Factors, Ubiquitous Computing and Ambient Intelligence, User-Centred Design, Usability and Accessibility, Systems and Models for Collaboration, Interaction in Teaching and Learning, Design and Development of User Interfaces, Virtual and Augmented Reality, Interaction and People with Special Needs.
This work is suitable for all scientists interested in HCI research.

"The title of the book is not only intended to describe the
movement toward networked social and political action, but like The
Long Tail, Groundswell, and Tipping Point, it's predisposed for
buzzword status. Which is to say it's potentially a term that
transcends the book itself and becomes a part of the language we
use, where the entire meaning of the book can be conveyed in a
single word: CauseWired..." (MaxGladwell.com, October 7, 2008)
