C# in Depth is a completely new book designed to propel existing C#
developers to a higher level of programming skill. One simple principle
drives this book: explore a few things deeply rather than offer a
shallow view of the whole C# landscape. If you often find yourself
wanting just a little more at the end of a typical chapter, this is the
book for you. Expert author Jon Skeet dives into the C# language,
plumbing new C# 2 and 3 features and probing the core C# language
concepts that drive them. This unique book puts the new features into
context of how C# has evolved without a lengthy rehearsal of the full C#
language. C# in Depth briefly examines the history of C# and the .NET
framework and reviews a few often-misunderstood C# 1 concepts that are
very important as the foundation for fully exploiting C# 2 and 3.

Because the book addresses C# 1 with a light touch, existing C#
developers don’t need to pick through the book in order to find new
material to enhance their skills. This book focuses on the C# 2 and 3
versions of the language, but clearly explains where features are
supported by changes in the runtime (CLR) or use new framework classes.
Each feature gets a thorough explanation, along with a look on how you’d
use it in real life applications. C# in Depth is both a vehicle for
learning C# 2 and 3 and a reference work. Although the coverage is
in-depth, the text is always accessible: You’ll explore pitfalls that
can trip you up, but you’ll skip over gnarly details best left to the
language specification. The overall effect is that readers become not
just proficient in C# 2 and 3, but comfortable that they truly
understand the language.

A strong system of defenses will save your systems from falling victim to published and otherwise uninventive attacks, but even the most heavily defended system can be cracked under the right conditions. Incident Response aims to teach you how to determine when an attack has occurred or is underway–they’re often hard to spot–and show you what to do about it. Authors Kevin Mandia and Chris Prosise favor a tools- and procedures-centric approach to the subject, thereby distinguishing this book from others that catalog particular attacks and methods for dealing with each one. The approach is more generic, and therefore better suited to dealing with newly emerging attack techniques.

Anti-attack procedures are presented with the goal of identifying, apprehending, and successfully prosecuting attackers. The advice on carefully preserving volatile information, such as the list of processes active at the time of an attack, is easy to follow. The book is quick to endorse tools, the functionalities of which are described so as to inspire creative applications. Information on bad-guy behavior is top quality as well, giving readers knowledge of how to interpret logs and other observed phenomena. Mandia and Prosise don’t–and can’t–offer a foolproof guide to catching crackers in the act, but they do offer a great “best practices” guide to active surveillance. –David Wall

Topics covered: Monitoring computer systems for evidence of malicious activity, and reacting to such activity when it’s detected. With coverage of Windows and Unix systems as well as non-platform-specific resources like Web services and routers, the book covers the fundamentals of incident response, processes for gathering evidence of an attack, and tools for making forensic work easier. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review
“… poorly trained network administrators and the lack of firewalls and intrustion detection systems still make it difficult to find the source and strategy of the attack.” Computerworld article (8/21/00) on Incident Response featuring David Dittrich, a researcher who spoke at the Usenix Security Symposium.” –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

“The book captures the current state of affairs with the respect to protocols related to or influenced by wireless technologies.” — IEEE Network, May/June 2004

Product Description
As wireless IP (Internet Protocol) networking technologies have become increasingly critical for the telecommunications industry, many standards organizations have sought to define a global infrastructure for wireless IP networks. This book is a practical source of up-to-date information on the growing body of specifications associated with wireless IP network architectures, systems, and protocols, with a focus on the network layer and above.

In a clear, understandable manner, the authors, both leading experts in the field, provide a detailed description and comparison of next-generation wireless networks, specifically IP-based wireless networks, and discuss critical issues that may arise in their design.

Starting with a historical look at wireless networks, the authors review the evolution of public mobile services into the current wave of mobile data services. They discuss the motivations for IP-based wireless networks and provide an overview of related architecture and standards activities, particularly as defined by 3GPP and 3GPP2, the two most influential organizations in the field.

In addition to network architecture, the book covers protocols in four major areas:

  • Signaling
  • Mobility
  • Quality of Service (QoS)
  • Security

Comprehensive and authoritative, IP-Based Next-Generation Wireless Networks: Systems, Architectures, and Protocols is an invaluable reference for anyone seeking the clarity and perspective often difficult to obtain from standards specs.

This single, albeit heavy, volume contains a profound level of detail. With over 1,340 pages in 41 chapters, 200 pages of finely printed appendices and indices, more than 700 tables and illustrations, a CD-ROM with useful utilities in both the front and back cover of the book, and a fabulous list of almost every vendor of every imaginable PC component, this guide to upgrading holds its own in a crowded field of fine books on the subject.

This volume serves as a desktop reference for everything–including storage and memory upgrades, multimedia enhancements, the special requirements of the roadworthy laptop and notebook, printing, networking, modems, and other peripherals. The book’s tabular data is very helpful and, in many cases, the photographic evidence helps with the practical implementation of a particular upgrade. In general, PC Upgrade and Repair Bible contains more data than step-by-step illustrations, which may make the actual machine upgrading process difficult for the reader who needs a lot of handholding. On the other hand, this volume is more comprehensive than some of its more graphical competitors. The reader who called this book “the Swiss army knife of computer books” was dead-on accurate. –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

  • Updated and revised with eighty percent new material, this book is 100 percent of what readers need to upgrade, fix, or troubleshoot PCs

When the first edition of About Face was published in 1995, the idea of designing products based on human goals was a revolutionary concept. Thanks to the work of Alan Cooper and other pioneers, interaction design is now widely recognized as a unique and vital discipline, but our work is far from finished.

This completely updated volume presents the effective and practical tools you need to design great desktop applications, Web 2.0 sites, and mobile devices. This book will teach you the principles of good product behavior and introduce you to Cooper’s Goal-Directed Design method, from conducting user research to defining your product using personas and scenarios. In short, About Face 3 will show you how to design the best possible digital products and services.

Product Description
The focus of High Performance Multimedia is on the ever expanding European e-content industry. Production, aggregation and distribution of that content are the starting points to any future development towards a flourishing industry sector of the third millennium. Nevertheless, in addition to the diffusion of knowledge throughout the industry, digitalisation has completely changed the structure of the content business through the dissociation of content and media channel. This movement creates problems in the process of the business.

Highest technological demands in time and money are limiting the size of e-content enterprises today. In contrast, its distribution is still being dominated by broadcasters and telecom providers that skim the biggest part of the profits. However, possibilities do arise when analyzing the industry of e-content. The European e-content market will be able to play a major role in the future by including all relevant players and their abilities.
