Product Description
This book presents over 100 papers from the 3rd Engineering & Product Design Education International Conference dedicated to the subject of exploring novel approaches in product design education. The theme of the book is “Crossing Design Boundaries” which reflects the editors’ wish to incorporate many of the disciplines associated with, and integral to, modern product design and development pursuits. The book covers, for example, the conjunction of anthropology and design, the psychology of design products, the application of soft computing in wearable products, and the utilisation of new media and design and how these can be best exploited within the current product design arena.
The book includes discussions concerning product design education and the cross-over into other well established design disciplines such as interaction design, jewellery design, furniture design, and exhibition design which have been somewhat under represented in recent years. The book comprises a number of sections containing papers which cover highly topical and relevant issues including Design Curriculum Development, Interdisciplinarity, Design Collaboration and Team Working, Philosophies of Design Education, Design Knowledge, New Materials and New Technologies in Design, Design Communication, Industrial Collaborations and Working with Industry, Teaching and Learning Tools, and Design Theory.

Product Description
Designed as the definitive reference on the compilation of the Esterel synchronous reactive real-time language, Compiling Esterel covers all aspects of the language and includes a tutorial, a reference manual, its formal semantics, and detailed technical information about the many techniques used to compile it.
Esterel is based on the simple idea of providing a software language that has a synchronous model of time. That is, the execution of the program is divided into discrete instants, and statements are either guaranteed to execute in a single instant, or take multiple instants as requested by the programmer. Suitable for programming safety-critical real-time systems, Esterel and its model of computation have found use in industrial applications such as avionics, integrated circuit design, and other safety-critical environments.
While Compiling Esterel does not assume prior knowledge of the Esterel language, readers will appreciate having prior knowledge of programming language semantics and compiler technology, along with some familiarity with synchronous digital hardware design.
Researchers as well as advanced developers will find Compiling Esterel essential for understanding Esterel at all levels.

In spite of the clear need to present these concepts to a much broader technical audience, there is a perplexing dearth of training material and textbooks in the field, particularly at the introductory level. … it is indeed refreshing to see the publication of the book An Introduction to Parallel and Vector Scientific Computing, written by Ronald W. Shonkwiler and Lew Lefton, both of the Georgia institute of Technology. They have taken the bull by the horns and produced a book that appears to be entirely satisfactory as an introductory textbook for use in such a course.’ Scientific Programming

Nanotechnology and Materials Technology Development Pages: 67 | 2006-08 | ISBN N/A | PDF | 3 MB
Nanotechnology is an advanced technology that has received a lot of attention for its ability to make use of the unique properties of nanosized materials. Nanotechnology is capable of manipulating and controlling material structures at the nano level (a nanometer is equal to one millionth of a millimeter) and offering unprecedented functions and excellent material properties. Nanotechnology consists of the “top-down approach” and the “bottom-up approach.” In the former approach, the sophistication of fine processing technologies, such as semiconductor manufacturing, can lead to the processing of nanosized fine structures. In the bottom-up approach, self-organization properties inherent in materials can be utilized to assemble nanosized fine structures from the atomic or moleculer levels. Nanotechnology, including nanostructured material metrology to accurately determine physical properties at the nanolevel, is considered a strategic technological area that goes beyond conventional technologies, potentially leading to a paradigm shift in new industrial technologies. The basic concept of nanotechnology first emerged half a century ago. Actual observation and manipulation of nanosized atoms became possible when scanning tunneling microscopes came into practical use in the first half of the 1980s. Since the United States launched its National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in 2000 as a strategic governmental research program, global nanotechnology research and development investment has been on the rise.
