Essays on Managing Successful Projects

Product Description
Over the course of a legendary career, Joe Marasco earned a reputation as the “go to” software project manager: the one to call when you were facing a brutally tough, “make or break” project. Marasco reflected on his experiences in a remarkable series of “Franklin’s Kite” essays for The Rational Edge, Rational and IBM’s online software development magazine. Now, Marasco collects and updates those poignant essays, bringing his unique insights (and humor) to everything from modeling to scheduling, team dynamics to compensation. The result: a new classic that deserves a place alongside Fred Brooks’ The Mythical Man-Month in the library of every developer and software manager

The Definitive Guide to Grails, Second Edition

Product Description

The rise of Ruby on Rails has signified a huge shift in how we build web applications today; it is a fantastic framework with a growing community. There is, however, space for another such framework that integrates seamlessly with Java. Thousands of companies have invested in Java, and these same companies are losing out on the benefits of a Rails–like framework. Enter Grails.

Grails is not just a Rails clone, it aims to provide a Rails–like environment that is more familiar to Java developers and that employs idioms that Java developers are comfortable using, making the adjustment in mentality to a dynamic framework less of a jump. The concepts within Grails, like interceptors, tag libs, and Groovy Server Pages (GSP), make those in the Java community feel right at home.

Grails’ foundation is on solid open source technologies such as Spring, Hibernate, and SiteMesh, which gives it even more potential in the Java space: Spring provides powerful inversion of control and MVC, Hibernate brings a stable, mature object relational mapping technology with the ability to integrate with legacy systems, and SiteMesh handles flexible layout control and page decoration.

Grails complements these with additional features that take advantage of the coding–by–convention paradigm such as dynamic tag libraries, Grails object relational mapping, Groovy Server Pages, and scaffolding.

Graeme Rocher, Grails lead and founder, and Jeff Brown bring you completely up–to–date with their authoritative and fully comprehensive guide to the Grails framework. You’ll get to know all the core features, services, and Grails extensions via plug–ins, and understand the roles that Groovy and Grails are playing in the changing Web.

Java Reflection in Action

Product Description
Explaining the Java Reflection API and providing techniques for using it successfully, this guide describes the capabilities that allow a program to examine and modify itself at runtime. The book examines the java.lang.reflect package, explains how you can benefit from its use, and includes a detailed discussion of Java’s dynamic proxy facility.

The authors also address less obvious reflective capabilities, such as call stack introspection and the Java class loader. You’ll learn the various ways to use Reflection to generate code and work around the API’s limitations. The book also focuses on performance analysis techniques as well as patterns, and features a peek at what’s new in JDK 1.5. The book begins with simple, teachable examples that allow you to observe the concepts in action and then progresses to more complex examples that relate to problems programmers encounter every day. The authors provide valuable insight into how you can easily solve these problems using Reflection.

Lightroom is Adobe’s Pro Photo editing and organizing application, and it’s a requirement for anyone that is working with large number of photos. In this 4.5-hour tutorial by star trainer Dan Moughamian, you’ll learn incredibly useful skills and workflows that will help you get the best results from your photo library.

With the digital revolution it’s now very common to shot first and ask questions later. Consequently, if you’re like most photographers you have endless amounts of digital photos to catalogue and control. This comprehensive tutorial begins by showing you how to organize large libraries of photo files using the detailed database & meta-tagging features contained in Lightroom’s Library Mode.

Next, you’ll move on to Lightroom’s Develop Mode to edit your photos. Common digital photography skills such as editing hue, saturation, luminance, noise reduction, and other workflows are carefully explored. You’ll even learn how to restore photos that are overexposed of under exposed, how to sharpen detail in images, and also how to use saturation to create sepia and other common photographic effects.

Of course, having photos that look great on your computer is only one step in the chain - you still need to output those photos for others to see. To that end, the final chapters of the course demonstrate concepts you need to know when it comes time to output your photos for print and the web.

This is a comprehensive tutorial, but you don’t need to watch the entire show. Use the detailed menus and keyword search functions to quickly find topics of interest, or watch the program from beginning to end. That’s the essence of Nonlinear Educating!

This 7.5 hour tutorial is available! See the Table of Contents for a full list of the topics covered by this title.

For decades, Photoshop has been the industry-standard software used for computer graphics and photo manipulation - and with the release of Adobe CS4, it’s now better than ever! In this comprehensive 5-hour tutorial-video, you’ll learn everything you need to know to confidently make and re-touch amazing images with Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Veteran trainer and certified Adobe product expert Jim Kanter demonstrates important tips and tricks for working with layers, applying Photoshop’s built-in effects to change and manipulate images, using Paths & Masks, working with Erasers & Brushes, and so much more. Along the way, you’ll learn important workflow techniques for retouching photographs to improve contrast and color, while removing unwanted artifacts from your images.

As a personal note, I (Martin Sitter) have been using Photoshop for close to 20 years. I’ve used it almost daily in the process of writing books, creating DVD-Videos, or making graphics for things like this web site. As I watched this tutorial I was blown away by the amount of stuff I never knew about Photoshop.

Jim Kanter is without a doubt one of the best educators in the Nonlinear Educating roster, and I can confidently say that if you’re interested in getting the most out of Photoshop, you need to watch this tutorial. It is incredibly detailed, has a logical flow, and IMHO is one of the best titles we’ve ever released, either at designProVideo.com or macProVideo.com.

This is a comprehensive tutorial, but you don’t need to watch it all. Use the search functions and detailed menus to quickly find important topics - that’s the essence of Nonlinear Educating using N.E.D.!

Application in focus: Maya 2008
Instructor: Adrian Cruceru (he speaks VERY slow and annoying!)
TRT: 35h59m
Video: QuickTime h.264 @ 300kbps, 1024×640, 10fps.
Audio: Mono AAC 44.1 kHz

This tutorial takes you in depth through all the parts of maya.

I’m sorry I can’t give any other details on the tutorial because the vendor dosen’t exist anymore,
and I haven’t watched the tutorial to it’s end because of the annoying voice of the instructor.

The tutorial was made by a company called Binary Divinity.
They suddenly closed their webpage and took whatever money their students had payed,
still owing them the tutorials witch they now never are going to make.

The guy behind it all Ramon Lopez-Vidal also ended up owing the instructors money because he didn’t pay them either.
