Human language seems to have arisen roughly within the last 50-100,000 years. In evolutionary terms, this is the mere blink of an eye. If this is correct, then much of what we consider distinctive to language must in fact involve operations available in pre-linguistic cognitive domains. Electronic business (e-business) is the use of Internet-based information and communication technologies (ICTs) to conduct business (including sharing information, maintaining relationships and conducting transactions) within and between organisations. Despite some failures, organisations of all kinds have continued to invest heavily in e-business. However, many organisations have struggled to adapt their performance measurement systems to the digital environment. Little research has yet been conducted in this field and it is not clear how, or even if, existing models of performance measurement need to be modified to make them suitable for the needs of e-business.
The authors have been studying the impact of the adoption of ICTs on business operations for more than four years. The authors had access to a number of organisations that claim to have developed performance measurement systems that are suited to the e-business environment.
The authors also addressed the following issues
- the origins and process of development of e-business performance measurement systems
- any theoretical basis of e-business performance measurement systems.
- - the links between the performance measurement systems for e-business and traditional business
- the impact of specific e-business performance measurement systems on business performance.
