Beginning Java Objects: From Concepts To Code, 2nd Edition by: Jacquie Barker
Publisher: Apress | 20-06-2005 | ISBN: 1590594576 | 1000 pages | 10.6 Mb
Learning to design objects effectively with Java is the goal of Beginning Java Objects, an intensive yet approachable guide to object design using UML and today's hottest programming language. Aimed at those who know a little Java, but don't yet feel comfortable with the object paradigm, this book can bridge the gap and take your knowledge of Java objects to the next level.

The book takes readers through object design from the very beginning at a relaxed pace. While you get all the necessary jargon for really learning the object paradigm (for example, there is full coverage of concepts such as data encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism), the tutorial is apt to reach more readers. Without being doctrinaire about the design process, the author walks you through the steps for "discovering" objects in a business problem (including classes, attributes and operations) and then determining how these objects work together to model real-world problems. The sample class diagrams offer quite a rich level of detail, and a single case study for a student course registration database demonstrates the design principles, including extensive class diagrams.

Elementary Fuzzy Matrix Theory and Fuzzy Models for Social Scientists
Publisher: Automaton | ISBN: 1599730057 | edition 2007 | PDF | 352 pages | 3,3 mb
This book gives the basic notions of fuzzy matrix theory and its applications to simple models. The approach is non-traditional in order to attract many students to use this methodology in their research. The traditional approach of mathematicians has conditioned students of sociology in such a manner that they averse to using mathematical tools. Six simple types of fuzzy models that make use of fuzzy matrices are given. These models are distinct because they are time dependent and can even be used for statistical data. The Fuzzy Cognitive Maps model gives the hidden pattern.

Fuzzy Relational Maps model not only gives the inter-relations between two sets of disjoint attributes. The Bidirectional Associative Memories model analyzes data depending on the time-period while the Fuzzy Associative memories model can give the gradation of importance of each attribute. Finally, the Fuzzy Relational Equation model is capable of giving a solution closer to the predicted solution. All the methods are illustrated through elaborate examples of particular social problems.

Topics and Methods in Condensed Matter Theory: From Basic Quantum Mechanics to the Frontiers of Research
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 443 | 2007-07 | ISBN 3540707263 | PDF | 4 MB
This book provides material for courses in theoretical physics for undergraduate and graduate students specializing in condensed matter, including experimentalists who want a thorough theoretical background; the advanced part should be of interest to research workers too. A good first course in quantum mechanics is assumed. Here a variety of many-body phenomena in condensed matter are discussed, with special attention paid to the understanding of strong correlation effects. This requires a variety of theoretical tools (diagram expansions, groups, recursion methods and more). The text, which arose naturally from teaching, is eminently readable and the mathematical treatments are explained in enough detail to be followed easily. Proofs of all the relevant theorems are provided, but the main emphasis is always on the physical meaning or applicability of the results. Many examples are provided for illustration and also serve as worked problems.

Did My Neurons Make Me Do It?: Philosophical and Neurobiological Perspectives on Moral Responsibility and Free Will
By Nancey Murphy, Warren S. Brown

Publisher Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0199215391 | edition 2007 | PDF | 236 pages | 1,27 mb
If humans are purely physical, and if it is the brain that does the work formerly assigned to the mind or soul, then how can it fail to be the case that all of our thoughts and actions are determined by the laws of neurobiology? If this is the case, then free will, moral responsibility, and, indeed, reason itself would appear to be in jeopardy. Nancey Murphy and Warren S. Brown here defend a non-reductive version of physicalism whereby humans are (sometimes) the authors of their own thoughts and actions. Did My Neurons Make Me Do It? brings together insights from both philosophy and the cognitive neurosciences to defeat neurobiological reductionism. One resource is a 'post-Cartesian' account of mind as essentially embodied and constituted by action-feedback-evaluation-action loops in the environment, and 'scaffolded' by cultural resources.

Another is a non-mysterious account of downward (mental) causation explained in terms of a complex, higher-order system exercising constraints on lower-level causal processes. These resources are intrinsically related: the embeddedness of brain events in action-feedback loops is the key to their mentality, and those broader systems have causal effects on the brain itself. With these resources Murphy and Brown take on two problems in philosophy of mind: a response to the charges that physicalists cannot account for the meaningfulness of language nor the causal efficacy of the mental qua mental. Solutions to these problems are a prerequisite to addressing the central problem of the book: how can biological organisms be free and morally responsible? The authors argue that the free-will problem is badly framed if it is put in terms of neurobiological determinism; the real issue is neurobiological reductionism. If it is indeed possible to make sense of the notion of downward causation, then the relevant question is whether humans exert downward causation over some of their own parts and processes. If all organisms do this to some extent, what needs to be added to this animalian flexibility to constitute free and responsible action? The keys are sophisticated language and hierarchically ordered cognitive processes allowing (mature) humans to evaluate their own actions, motives, goals, and rational and moral principles.

Clayton T. Crowe, Donald F. Elger, John A. Roberson, Barbara C. Williams, “Engineering Fluid Mechanics”
Wiley | 2008 | ISBN: 0470259779 | 552 pages | PDF | 45,1 MB
Connecting the math and theory of fluid mechanics to practical applications can be a difficult process. Engineering Fluid Mechanics builds on the success of previous editions to help engineers learn how to apply concepts by keeping them engaged and active throughout the book. Simple and effective examples show how key equations are utilized in practice, and step-by-step descriptions provide details into the processes that engineers follow. Each chapter also outlines the three most important things they will be able to accomplish once the concepts are learned. With its physical/visual approach, engineers will quickly gain an intuitive understanding of the principles.

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition
Publisher: O'Reilly Media | ISBN: 1600330150 | edition 2002 | PDF | 500 pages | 5,14 mb
Today's web sites have moved far beyond "brochureware." They are larger and more complex, have great strategic value to their sponsors, and their users are busier and less forgiving. Designers, information architects, and web site managers are required to juggle vast amounts of information, frequent changes, new technologies, and sometimes even multiple objectives, making some web sites look like a fast-growing but poorly planned city-roads everywhere, but impossible to navigate. Well-planned information

architecture has never been as essential as it is now.

"Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition, shows you how to blend aesthetics and mechanics for distinctive, cohesive web sites that work. Most books on web development concentrate on either the graphics or the technical issues of a site. This book focuses on the framework that holds the two together.

This edition contains more than 75% new material. You'll find updated chapters on organization, labeling, navigation, and searching; and a new chapter on thesauri, controlled vocabularies and metadata will help you understand the interconnectedness of these systems. The authors have expanded the methodology chapters to include a more interdisciplinary collection of tools and techniques. They've also complemented the top-down strategies of the first edition with bottom-up approaches that enable distributed, emergent solutions.

A whole new section addresses the opportunities and challenges of practicing information architecture, while another section discusses how that work impacts and is influenced by the broader organizational context. New case studies provide models for creating enterprise intranetportals and online communities. Finally, you'll find pointers to a wealth of essential information architecture resources, many of which did not exist a few years ago.

By applying the principles outlined in this completely updated classic, you'll build web sites and intranets that are easier to navigate and appealing to your users, as well as scalable and simple to maintain. "Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, 2nd Edition is a treasure trove of ideas and practical advice for anyone involved in building or maintaining a large, complex web site or intranet.

Michael Hafner (Author), Ruth Breu, “Security Engineering for Service-Oriented Architectures”
Springer | 2008 | ISBN: 3540795383 | 248 pages | PDF | 13,4 MB
While their basic principles and ideas are well understood and cogent from a conceptual perspective, the realization of interorganizational workflows and applications based on service-oriented architectures (SOAs) remains a complex task, and, especially when it comes to security, the implementation is still bound to low-level technical knowledge and hence inherently error-prone.

Hafner and Breu set a different focus. Based on the paradigm of model-driven security, they show how to systematically design and realize security-critical applications for SOAs. In their presentation, they first detail how systems and security engineering go hand in hand and are integrated from the very start in the requirements elicitation and the design phase. In a second step, they apply the principles of model-driven security to SOAs. Model-driven security is an engineering paradigm that aims at the automatic generation of security-critical executable software for target architectures. Based on the general principles of model-driven software development, the automation of security engineering through proven and reliable mechanisms guarantees correctness and facilitates an agile and flexible approach to the implementation and high-level management of security-critical systems.

Their book addresses IT professionals interested in the design and realization of modern security-critical applications. It presents a synthesis of various best practices, standards and technologies from model-driven software development, security engineering, and SOAs. As a reader, you will learn how to design and realize SOA security using the framework of an extensible domain architecture for model-driven security.

Olaf Kirch, “Administration réseau sous Linux”
O'Reilly | 1999 | ISBN: 2841770079 | 336 pages | PDF | 1,8 MB

The Smart Pantry section includes lists of Ayers's favorite vinegars, oils and grains, and includes creative recipes for homemade condiments like Chutney-Yogurt Crust for fish, Roasted Jalapeno Ketchup, and Flavor Cubes, such as one made with carrot juice, eggplant and garlic puree frozen in ice trays and used to add quick flavor to soups or sauces. Cesare Rossi , Flavio Russo , Ferruccio Russo, "Ancient Engineers' Inventions: Precursors of the Present "
Springer | 2009 | ISBN: 904812252X | 356 pages | PDF | 19,6 MB
This book describes inventions and designs of ancient engineers that are the precursors of the present. The ages mainly range from 300 B.C. to 1600 A.D. with some exceptions from before and after this period.
As for the very ancient ones, the book describes inventions (documented by archaeological finds mainly from Pompei, Ercolano and Stabia) that generally are very little known and sometimes not known at all. Some inventions are in the military field. This is because (unfortunately) many inventions and technological innovations have been conceived starting from military applications.
The book is divided into five parts.

The first four parts pertain to definite fields and present inventions generally conceived up to the late Roman Empire. Inventions that are representative of the engineering genius of the ancients and that may be considered as milestones, each in their respective field.
The fifth part refers to fields of engineering (such as textiles and automation) in which important innovations were conceived also in more recent centuries.
For each of the inventions presented, even the ancient ones of many centuries past, the authors provide three elements of research and reference:

Written documents (the classics)

Iconic references (coins, bas-reliefs, etc.)

Archaeological findings.

The target groups of the book are students and scholars with interest on History of Mechanical Engineering in Antiquity and Archaelogy.

Shel Perkins, “Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers”
Peachpit Press | 2006 | ISBN: 0321278798 | 392 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB
Review
"Now that design skills have become a commodity, you need business skills to focus them. Shel Perkins has written a crackerjack book that will be on the shelf of every ambitious designer." Marty Neumeier President, Neutron LLC, author of Zag and The Brand Gap "This is the best left-brain business book I've ever read for right-brain designers. And, having two right brains, I know what I'm talking about. I'm recommending Shel's book to every student of mine and buying a copy for each designer on my staff." Brian Collins Chief Creative Officer, Brand Integration Group, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide "Damn good advice! This is a fantastic business handbook for designers. It's loaded with the specific, usable, real-world business knowledge that designers need. Shel has done a masterful job of making the information simple, clear, and easy to follow.

This is a must-have book for any designer who wants to succeed in business." Billy Pittard President, Pittard Inc. "This is the most concise and brilliantly informative guide I have ever wished I'd read before establishing three studios for ATTIK. Shel has managed to capture a vast array of learning that most of us only gather after many years of trial and error -- a guide that every independent designer or agency owner should have within arm's reach." Will Travis President, U.S. Operations, ATTIK "Many design firms and designers have benefited from Shel Perkins' sound business perspectives and advice. Now Shel has written a valuable guide that continues that process. The lucky readers of Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers will absorb many important messages that are essential to success. Shel deserves a 'Thank You' for rendering this service to all designers." Roz Goldfarb President, Roz Goldfarb Associates, author of Careers by Design "Although designers are highly skilled at applying their creativity toward solving design-related problems, most lack the fundamental business knowledge that would enable them to start or optimally run a firm. Whether you're a student, design contractor or design firm owner, Shel Perkins' new book, Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers, is a comprehensive source of information on the professional practice of design." Gerard Furbershaw Co-Founder and COO, Lunar Design "Destined to become a dog-eared reference for all those parts of running a design firm that they never taught in college." Mitchell Mauk Principal, Mauk Design "A confident and perceptive mentor, Perkins creates a painless navigation through a range of strategies and issues." Communication Arts Magazine "Our favorite design consultant and your future best friend, Shel Perkins, literally wrote the book on this subject. Because he's a designer himself, he can give advice in a way that doesn't make creative types want to hurt themselves." Alissa Walker UnBeige "A great overview of all of the issues that designers need to know to be in business." Nathan Shedroff Author of Making Meaning and Experience Design "This book is simply a must-have for anyone working in the design profession." Deanna Moore AIGALosAngeles.org "This is a fantastic book, everyone should have a (well-worn) copy. In Shel's typical style, the information is delivered in clear, concise language. Required and highly valuable reading for us all." Rob Bynder Principal, Robert Bynder Design "Packed with information on everything from how to get started to how to stay afloat." STEP Magazine "Shel Perkins spells out every aspect of business for every type of designer in a language that is easy to understand. From career paths to pricing to legal issues, no stone is left unturned. This book is an invaluable asset." Troy Finamore Finamore Design "It is by far one of the best -- if not the best -- graphic design business book I have read." Daniel Schutzsmith GraphicDefine.org "Whether you're just getting out of design school, thinking of going out on your own, or having large-firm growing pains, this is the book for you." Andrew H. Paterson, "Genetics and Genomics of Cotton (Plant Genetics and Genomics: Crops and Models)"
Springer | 2009-03-31 | ISBN: 038770809X | 496 pages | PDF | 4,4 MB
A few members of the Gossypium (cotton) genus are cultivated for the production of elongated single-celled fibers valued worldwide at about $20 billion annually at the farm gate, and which sustain one of the world’s largest industries (textiles) with an annual worldwide economic impact of about $500 billion. In a number of ways, cotton production and the textile industry are closely tied to petrochemical usage. At a practical level, cotton genomics offers both bio-based carbon sequestration alternatives to petrochemical use, and improved sustainability of crop production.

The Gossypium (cotton) also genus presents novel opportunities to advance our understanding of the natural world and its organic evolution. In particular, the evolution of cultivated cottons from their wild ancestors has involved a fascinating series of events that offer scientists the opportunity to dissect the evolution of a novel organ, the ‘lint fiber’, and also to unravel the consequences of polyploidy, both for the generation of biodiversity and for crop productivity.

In this book, advances of the past decade will be summarized and synthesized to elucidate the current state of knowledge of the structure, function, and evolution of the Gossypium genome, and progress in the application of this knowledge to cotton improvement. This book will address five broad topics. First, as a backdrop for all studies of the genus, it is important to understand the naturally-occurring diversity in the genus, its organization and distribution, and its evolutionary history. Of special importance is the formation of a single polyploid from two (among 8) diploid genome types, the radiation of this polyploid, and the domestication and improvement of two (among 5 extant) polyploid species.

Jeremy Jones - Negotiating Change: The New Politics of the Middle East
I. B. Tauris | 2007 | ISBN: 1845112695 | Pages: 224 | PDF | 1.41 MB
As the US demand for Western-style democracy in the Middle East grows ever more strained, Harvard Middle East expert Jeremy Jones travels through the region evaluating the prospects for change. He engages with diverse political cultures, from traditional assemblies in the Persian Gulf, to sophisticated multiconfessional politics in the Levant. Drawing on 25 years experience in the region, and hundreds of interviews with government officials, opposition leaders, grassroots activists and ordinary people, he finds real momentum towards democratic reform, but concludes that to be successful and durable, it must be pursued through local political cultures, not in spite of them. With a new perspective on a troubled region, his critique of US policy argues that promoting a “one-size-fits-all” democratic model has been misguided, and ultimately counter-productive.
