Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Nutraceuticals and Bioactive Compounds Publisher: CRC | ISBN: 0849370892 | edition 2007 | PDF | 424 pages | 8,7 mb
Enhanced concern for the quality and safety of food products, increased preference for natural products, and stricter regulations on the residual level of solvents, all contribute to the growing use of supercritical fluid technology as a primary alternative for the extraction, fractionation, and isolation of active ingredients. As a solvent-free process, supercritical fluid technology is a popular answer for the functional foods and nutraceutical sector, one of the fastest growing consumer driven markets. Recent advancements in the technology and increased utilization of the process demand a comprehensive, single-source review of current and future trends in supercritical fluid technology.
Compiling contributions from international experts in the field, Supercritical Fluid Extraction of Nutraceuticals and Bioactive Compounds presents the state-of-the-science in the extraction and fractionation of bioactive ingredients by supercritical fluids. Focusing on implemented industrial processes and trends, it reviews the fundamentals of the technology and examines the economics of supercritical fluid extraction systems and processes. Over the course of twelve chapters, the book presents the supercritical fluid extraction processes in edible oils, including fish oils and specialty oils; herbs, such as Latin American plants and those used in Traditional Chinese Medicine; algae; spices; antioxidants and essential oils; as well as the processing of micro and nano-scale materials by supercritical fluid technology.
Each chapter covers the major active components in the target material, including chemical, physical, nutritional, and pharmaceutical properties; an analysis of the specific supercritical fluid process used; a comparison of traditional processing methods versus supercritical fluid technology; and a set of conclusions with supporting data and insight.

Karris, Steven T, "Networks - Design and Management, Second Edition" Orchard Publications | ISBN: 1934404160 | 01-06-2009 | 522 pages | PDF | 5.7MB
Networks are growing in size and complexity and this trend has created a rapid increase for networking engineers to provide practical and efficient solutions. Networking needs vary from one network to another; there is no such thing as "one size fits all." Also, a properly designed network must allow for expansion. The management of a small company may feel that this advanced technology is of no use to them since their monetary budget is limited. However, with proper planning, small companies can start with an affordable and versatile network and later expand on the next level of affordability. It is the scope of this text to provide a thorough treatment on networking and address the concerns cited above. On the title of this book "design" implies the purchasing and proper installation of the essential hardware and software that one must collect to assemble an effective computer network. Basically, it means the building of a network. By "management" we mean the duties and responsibilities of the network administrator. This book is primarily intended for those student and working professionals who have the desire to become network administrators. However, all practicing engineers will find it to be a very valuable source of information on this fascinating subject.

Branding Texas: Performing Culture in the Lone Star State By Leigh Clemons Publisher: University of Texas Press 2008 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 0292718071 | PDF | 5.5 MB
Ask anyone to name an archetypal Texan, and you're likely to get a larger-than-life character from film or television (say John Wayne's Davy Crockett or J. R. Ewing of TV's Dallas) or a politician with that certain swagger (think LBJ or George W. Bush). That all of these figures are white and male and bursting with self-confidence is no accident, asserts Leigh Clemons. In this thoughtful study of what makes a "Texan," she reveals how Texan identity grew out of the history—and, even more, the myth—of the heroic deeds performed by Anglo men during the Texas Revolution and the years of the Republic and how this identity is constructed and maintained by theatre and other representational practices.
Clemons looks at a wide range of venues in which "Texanness" is performed, including historic sites such as the Alamo, the battlefield at Goliad, and the San Jacinto Monument; museums such as the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum; seasonal outdoor dramas such as Texas! at Palo Duro Canyon; films such as John Wayne's The Alamo and the IMAX's Alamo: The Price of Freedom; plays and TV shows such as the Tuna trilogy, Dallas, and King of the Hill; and the Cavalcade of Texas performance at the 1936 Texas Centennial. She persuasively demonstrates that these performances have created a Texan identity that has become a brand, a commodity that can be sold to the public and even manipulated for political purposes.

N. Mallikarjuna Rao., “Medical Biochemistry” New Age International | 2006 | ISBN: 8122418236 | 837 pages | PDF | 6 MB
PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
I attempted to provide essential information on molecular basis of health and disease
that is mainly related to life of surviving cell(s) in the first edition of the book. However life
cycle of cell(s) includes cell(s) birth and cell(s) death apart from survival. For the last couple
of years these frontier areas are advancing rapidly which is viewed by many as good sign
for development of :
(a) new therapy or therapeutics for cancer
(b) immortalized cells.
The latter fuels growth of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries also. Hence, in
the second edition two chapters—1. Biochemistry of cell cycle (cell birth) 2. Biochemistry of
apoptosis (cell death) are added.
As living organisms evolved from simple unicellular to highly complex multicellular
mammals, several new systems and organs were developed. For example, blood which acts
as vehicle or communication between various locations of body, immune system which
protects body from intruders or foreign organisms.
Parkinsonism, psychosis, depression, Schizophrenia, loss of taste and olfaction are due
to disturbances in nervous, taste and olfactory systems. Various organs present in body
perform several organ specific functions which are essential for life. If functions of these
organs are disturbed, diseases in which may culminate in death. So, in this edition biochemistry
of blood including immune response in Chapter-32; molecular and cellular mechanism of
learning, memory, behaviour, taste and olfactory in biochemical communications Chapter;
tests, procedures that are done in hospital biochemistry laboratory to assess functions of
liver, kidney in Chapter-33 and thyroid in Chapter-29 are detailed.
Depending on disease a particular constituent of blood is either elevated or lowered.
Diagnosis and prognosis of disease usually involves detection and measurement of various
blood constituents in hospital biochemistry laboratory. Therefore advanced techniques like
high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), affinity chromatography, and general
techniques like centrifugation and dialysis, instruments from spectrophotometer to auto
analyzer and methods used for detection and quantitation of blood constituents like
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymes, electrolytes etc., in health and disease
are detailed in Chapter-34.
Humans and other mammals are able to remove waste products, toxins, foreign
compounds from blood and organs in the form of urine. In disease, composition of urine
varies from that of healthy state. So, detection, quantitation of various constituents of urine
is carried out in hospital biochemistry laboratory to confirm diagnosis of diseases. In Chapter
34, methods for detection and estimation of urine constituent under normal and diseased
conditions are also detailed.
Most striking feature in this edition of the book is inclusion of biochemical aspects of
diseases or disease causing organisms common to tropical countries like malaria, tuberculosis,
peptic ulcer or gastritis, pneumonia, leishmaniasis, giardiasis, trypanosomiasis etc. Since
most of the organisms are developing resistance to the existing drugs, there is need for
development of new drugs which requires thorough biochemical knowledge of these diseases
as well as disease causing organisms. Apart from adding new chapters, all existing chapters
have been updated by adding new subject matter. References of each chapter updated by
including reviews, books, research articles etc. Further, number of unsolved problems have
been increased in most of the chapters.
I hope this edition will be well received by teachers and students of various medical,
dental, pharmacy, biotechnology, physiotherapy, medical laboratory technology, biomedical
engineering, life sciences under graduate and post graduate courses, Suggestions or comments
from teachers and students are welcome. I am grateful to Sri. R.K. Gupta, Chairman; Sri
Saumya Gupta, Managing Director of New Age International, New Delhi, for publishing
second edition.

PREFACE
Manufacturing and workshop practices have become important in the industrial environment
to produce products for the service of mankind. The knowledge of manufacturing
practices is highly essential for all engineers and technocrats for familiarizing themselves
with modern concepts of manufacturing technologies. The basic need is to provide theoretical
and practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and workshop technology to all the
engineering students. Therefore, an attempt has been made through this book to present
both the theoretical and practical knowledge of these subjects. Considering the general
needs of engineering students in the country and the fact that they hardly get any exposure
to hand tools, equipments, machines and manufacturing setups, a basic course in manufacturing
science remains a core subject for all the branches of engineering. This book covers
most of the syllabus of manufacturing processes/technology,
workshop technology and workshop
practices for engineering diploma and degree classes prescribed by different universities
and state technical boards. While preparing the manuscript of this book, the examination
requirements of the engineering students have also been kept in mind. The book is
written in very simple language so that even an average student can easily grasp the subject
matter. Some comparisons have been given in tabular form and the stress has been given
on figures for better understanding of tools, equipments, machines and manufacturing setups
used in various manufacturing shops. The contents include exposure to bench work and
fitting, smithy and forging, sheet metal work, wood and wood working, casting, welding and
machine shop practices. At the end of each chapter, a number of questions have been
provided for testing the student’s understanding about the concept of the subject. The whole
text has been organized in twenty six chapters.
The first chapter presents the brief introduction of the subject with modern concepts
of manufacturing technology needed for the competitive industrial environment. Chapter 2
provides the necessary details of plant and shop layouts. General industrial safety measures
to be followed in various manufacturing shops are described in detail in chapter 3.
Chapters 4–8 provide necessary details regarding fundamentals of ferrous materials,
non-ferrous materials, melting furnaces, properties and testing of engineering materials and
heat treatment of metals and alloys.
Chapters 9–13 describe various tools, equipments and processes used in various shops
such as carpentry, pattern making, mold and core making, foundry shop. Special casting
methods and casting defects are also explained at length.
Chapters 14–16 provide basic knowledge of mechanical working of metals. Fundamental
concepts related to forging work and other mechanical working processes (hot and cold
working) have been discussed at length with neat sketches.
Chapter 17 provides necessary details of various welding and allied joining processes
such as gas welding, arc welding, resistance welding, solid state welding, thermochemical
welding, brazing and soldering.
Chapters 18–19 describe sheet metal and fitting work in detail. Various kinds of hand
tools and equipments used in sheet metal and fitting shops have been described using neat
sketches.
Chapters 20–24 provide construction and operational details of various machine tools
namely lathe, drilling machine, shaper, planer, slotter, and milling machine with the help
of neat diagrams.
Chapter 25 deals with technique of manufacturing of products with powder metallurgy.
The last chapter of the book discusses the basic concepts of quality control and inspection
techniques used in manufacturing industries.
The author strongly believes that the book would serve not only as a text book for the
students of engineering curriculum but would also provide reference material to engineers
working in manufacturing industries.
Although every care has been taken to check misprints and mistakes, yet it is difficult
to claim perfection. Any errors, omissions and suggestions for improvement of this volume
will be thankfully acknowledged and included in the next edition.

Planning of an Irrigation project, particularly mega projects like IGNP.
Sardar Sarover requires prime importance. Such projects are meant for
hundreds of years to come. The impact of such projects on environment,
economic, social, institutional on the area covered is drastic and in short
span of implementation there would be a sea change in life style of the
inhabitants.
We, the Irrigation engineers owe particular responsibilities towards
the nation, to bring maximum area under irrigation. The lands are limited
and cultivable area has almost reached a plateau. So to feed the increasing
population with limited lands, sustainable irrigation is a must.
Any ill planning may create havoc. Where as proper long term
based planning may be sustainable and keep the area blooming for the
times to come.
This small book is the out come of the problems faced by the authors
during their working in the field in various capacities, as well as difficulty
faced by farmers. Department find it in dilemma, when farmer brought
their genuine demand for commanding of their lands by canal system.
Authors feel perturbed, why farmers and nation should suffer for the
lapses in planning in canal network, OFD works by the department. In
IGNP some six lacs ha area which could have been covered by flow
canals has been left out. This is attributed to non-existence of any survey,
planning policy, Execution of canal system, and on farm development
(OFD) works uncoordinated.
This has prompted the authors to bring out some book on Survey and
Planning, Canal network and OFD works. The aim is not fault finding but
to stress that Survey and Planning are the keys for the optimum use of
national resources and sustainable irrigation. Hitherto Survey and Planning
is totally neglected.
Authors are greatly indebted for inspiration received from our fellow
Engineers in IGNP, CAD & WAPCOS.
The authors greatfully acknowledge the help taken from many standard
works on irrigation, studies and other national and international publications.
We wish to express our sincere thanks to M/s New Age International
(P) LTD Publishers particularly Saumya Gupta for having expressed his
confidence in publishing this book.
The authors would feel gratified to receive comments from our fellow
practicing engineers for whom this book is meant as a reference book.

Quantum Information: An Introduction Publisher: Springer | Pages: 424 | 2006-06-02 | ISBN 3540302654 | PDF | 4 MB
Recently, quantum information theory has been developing through a fusion of results from various research fields. This requires that understanding of basic results on diverse topics, and derived from different disciplinary perspectives, is required for appreciating the overall picture. Intended to merge key topics from both the information-theoretic and quantum- mechanical viewpoints, this graduate-level textbook provides a unified viewpoint of quantum information theory and lucid explanations of those basic results, so that the reader fundamentally grasps advances and challenges. For example, advanced topics in quantum communication such as quantum teleportation, superdense coding, quantum state transmission (quantum error-correction), and quantum encryption especially benefit from this unified approach. Unlike earlier treatments, the text requires knowledge of only linear algebra, probability theory, and quantum mechanics, while it treats the topics of quantum hypothesis testing and the discrimination of quantum states, and quantum channel coding (message transmission) with the minimal amount of math needed to convey their essence. Solving the more than 240 exercises provides readers with practice that not only enriches their knowledge of quantum information theory, but also can equip them with the techniques necessary for pursuing their own research in this field.

C.L. Wadhwa., “High Voltage Engineering” New Age International | 2007 | ISBN: 8122418597, 812242323X | 312 pages | PDF | 3,7 MB
“High Voltage Engineering” has been written for the undergraduate students in Electrical
Engineering of Indian and foreign Universities as well as the practising electrical
engineers.
The author developed interest in the field of High Voltage Engineering when he was a
student at the Govt. Engineering College, Jabalpur. It used to be thrilling to observe large
metal spheres flashing over, corona phenomenon on a wire placed along the axis of a
cylinder and then recording the corona loss, controlling the wave shapes of impulse voltages
etc.
The author has taught the subject at the Delhi College of Engineering for quite a number
of years and while preparing lecture notes he referred to some of the books and journals
and some literature from the internationally famed manufacturers of High Voltage
equipments e.g. Haefely, Tettex etc. The lecture notes so prepared, thus, have a touch of
both the class room requirements and a practising engineer’s requirements.
In this edition, zeroth chapter on Electric Stress estimation and c ontrol has been added
where in different methods viz. finite difference, finite element, charge simmulation method
and surface charge simulation methods have been discussed per estimation of metric
stresses in complex dielectric media and electrode configuration. a brief view of optimisation
of electrode configuration is also given in this chapter.
Chapter 1 deals with the breakdown of gases, liquids, and solid materials. Even though it
has not been possible to explain the physical phenomenon associated with breakdown of
the materials, with accuracy and precisiveness, an attempt has been made to bring out
some of the theories advocated by researchers in this field in a simple lucid and organised
way.
Chapters 2 and 3 discuss the generation of high d.c. and a.c. voltages and high impulse
voltages and currents. Some of the latest circuits have been discussed and rigorous mathematical
treatment of the circuit has been given to make the subject more interesting and
to make the student understand the subject better.
Measurement of transient voltage and currents and high voltage and current require different
skills and equipment as compared with common a.c. or d.c. voltages we normally
come across. Chapter 4 discusses various techniques and circuits for measurement of such
quantities.
Chapter 5 deals into high voltage testing of electrical equipments like insulators, cables,
transformers, circuit breakers etc.
The measurements using high voltage Schering bridge, transformer ratio arm bridge and
partial discharges yield information regarding the life expectancy and the long term stability
or otherwise of the insulating materials. These techniques have been discussed elaborately
in Chapter 6. These tests are very important both during design and operation of
the equipments.
Electrical transients last for a very short duration but these play a very important role in
the insulation design of power system. Chapter 7 takes a view of various types of transients
in power system and suggests classical and more modern statistical methods of
coordinating the insulation requirements of various equipments of the system and the
devices required for protection of these equipments.
In this edition of the book following articles have been added in chapter 1 of the book :
(i) Breakdown in SF6 gas and Vacuum.
(ii) Insulating materials used in power apparatus.
(iii) Application of gases, liquid and solid insulating materials in different power apparatus.
A suitable number of problems have been solved to help understand the relevant theory.
At the end, a large number of multiple choice questions have been added to help the
reader to test himself. An extensive bibliography will help the reader to locate detailed
information on various topics of his interest.
There are very few High Voltage Laboratories all over the world and the reader may not
have an opportunity to visit such a laboratory. Therefore, a few photoplates have been
added at suitable locations in the book to give a physical feel of various equipments in a
well equipped high voltage laboratory. The author feels that with the inclusion of
photoplates of high voltage equipments the student as well the practising engineers would
be greatly benefited.
I wish to express my sincere thanks to M/s Emile Haefely & Co. Ltd., Switzerland for
permitting inclusion of photoplates in the book which has enhanced the utility of the book.
I also wish my express my gratitude to my wife Usha, daughter Meenu and son Sandeep
for their patience and encouragement during the preparation of the book.
Any constructive suggestion for the improvement of the book will be gratefully acknowledged.
