Grigore Gogu "Structural Synthesis of Parallel Robots: Part 1: Methodology (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications)"
Springer | 2007-12-10 | ISBN: 1402051026 | 706 pages | PDF | 10 MB
This is the first book of robotics presenting solutions of uncoupled and fully-isotropic parallel robotic manipulators and a method for their structural synthesis. . The originality of this work resides in combining the new formulae for mobility connectivity, redundancy and overconstraints, and the evolutionary morphology in a systematic approach of structural synthesis. This work is organized in two parts published in two distinct books. Part 1 presents the methodology proposed for structural synthesis and Part 2 the various topologies of parallel robots generated by this systematic approach. Many solutions are presented here for the first time in the literature.

The author had to make a difficult and challenging choice between protecting these solutions through patents, and releasing them directly into the public domain. The second option was adopted by publishing them in various recent scientific publications and mainly in this book. In this way, the author hopes to contribute to a rapid and widespread implementation of these solutions in future industrial products.

Linking Competence to Opportunities to Learn: Models of Competence and Data Mining
Publisher: Springer | Pages: 148 | 2009-06-01 | ISBN 140209910X | PDF | 3 MB
The current world-wide movement toward standards-based science education is based on a belief that every student, no matter how different he/she is, can and should reach a prescribed level of competence. Yet there are differences in circumstances between students that lie beyond their control, such as classroom, school and family resources and practices. Thus it is more important than ever to identify the particular resources and practices that significantly predict students’ levels of achievement so that strategies can be developed to help students reach competence.

This book applies data mining methodology to the issue of standardizing achievement in science education and develops frameworks of competence in the ‘Opportunity-to-learn’ (OTL) model of science education. It is aimed primarily at science education researchers, but can also be used as a reference by national and state education agencies who are required to make decisions about science curriculum standards and resource allocation. School district personnel will also find it useful in teacher professional development.

Opportunity-to-learn (OTL) refers to the entitlement of every student to receive the necessary classroom, school and family resources and practices to reach the expected competence. This book quantifies and stystematizes OTL by developing models showing how the circumstances of classroom, school and family relate to students’ achievement. Liu has also applied data mining techniques to these models. In addition, the text analyzes policy as well as pedagogical implications for standards-based science education reform.

Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6
Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6: Build your own professional blog, forum, portal or community website with Drupal 6
Packt Publishing | April 4, 2008 | ISBN: 1847192971 | 380 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Drupal is a hugely popular and widely celebrated open-source Content Management System that is day-by-day becoming the first choice of people for building blogs and other websites. Sir Tim Berners-Lee (the father of the Internet), Hillary Clinton, and many others utilize Drupal to fulfil their online requirements.

Drupal is an elegantly designed, well-supported and flexible platform that anyone can use in order to create their own website. With such a powerful tool at your fingertips there is no longer any need to pay professionals to design a site when you can do the same job yourself absolutely free. All it takes is a bit of practice!

This book meets the booming demand for well presented, clear, concise, and above all practical information on how to move from knowing you want a website all the way through to designing and building it like a pro, and finally successfully managing and maintaining it.

Experienced technical author David Mercer expertly guides the reader through all the stages of building a professional website in a plain, articulate manner. Aimed in particular at beginners to Drupal, this book will allow readers to advance rapidly up the learning curve to the point where they can tackle any problem with confidence.

About the Author

David Mercer was born in August 1976 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Having always had a strong interest in science, David came into regular contact with computers at university where he graduated cum laude with majors in applied math and math (although he minored in computer science).

As a programmer and professional writer who has been writing both code and books for about nine years, he has worked on a number of well known titles, in various capacities, on a wide variety of topics. His books have sold tens of thousands of copies and have been translated into over 6 different languages to date.

David finds that the challenges arising from the dichotomous relationship between the science (and art) of software programming and the art (and science) of writing is what keeps his interest in producing books piqued. He will no doubt continue to write professionally in the future.

David balances his time between programming, reviewing, writing, and contributing to interesting web-based projects such as RankTracer and LinkDoozer. When he isn't working (which isn't that often) he enjoys playing guitar (generally on stage and unrehearsed) and getting involved in outdoor activities ranging from touch rugby and golf to water skiing and snowboarding.

Test Your C Skills
Test Your C Skills
BPB Publications | March 14, 2003 | ISBN: 8170298016 | 255 pages | PDF | 60 MB
With so many Degree / Diploma / Certificate programs being conducted in Computer Science and Information Technology it has indeed become difficult for software development companies to separate chaff from the grain. Hence many companies conduct written test in C language before conducting an interview. Though on the face it C language appears to be simple it has a number of features which can challenge the best in the field.

Unless you fully understand what these features are and how they are used you would not be able to answer these tests confidently. Instead of taking the regular approach of discussing each of these features one by one, this book takes a different route. It highlights these features through questions, about 1000 of them. Answers are furnished for each question which illustrates the key points lucidly. Once you are through with this book you will be able to face these written tests with the confidence that "I can do it"!

Animal Experimentation: A Guide to the Issues, 2nd Edition
Publisher: Cambridge University | Pages: 128 | 2009-02-16 | ISBN 0521703484 | PDF | 1 MB
Animal Experimentation is an important book for all those involved in the conduct, teaching, learning, regulation, support or critique of animal-based research. Whilst maintaining the clarity of style that made the first edition so popular, this second edition has been updated to include discussion of genetically modified organisms and associated welfare and ethical issues that surround the breeding programs in such research. It also discusses the origins of vivisection, advances in human and non-human welfare made possible by animal experimentation, principle moral objections to the use of research animals, alternatives to the use of animals in research, and the regulatory umbrella under which experiments are conducted in Europe, USA and Australasia. In addition, the book highlights the future responsibilities of students who will be working with animals, and offers practical advice on experimental design, literature search, consultation with colleagues, and the importance of the on-going search for alternatives.
