Diabetes care has changed enormously in the past few years. Diagnostic criteria have changed and there is strong evidence for the benefits of vigorous treatment of high blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and other risk factors for complications. Without such care, there is a greater risk of
disability or death. Patients rightly expect high standards of evidence-based care tailored to their personal needs.
General Practitioners are well placed to provide good, local disabetes care. This book provides a step-by-step guide to diabetes care for general practitioners and their teams; some patients may also find it helpful. The author draws on practical experience and takes a realistic, common sense
approach to the assessment, education, monitoring, and treatment of diabetes in all age groups. The new diagnostic criteria are explained and the bewildering range of new pills, insulins and gadgets are clearly discussed with help in choosing the right one for your patient. There are detailed sections on helping patients to manage diabetes in everyday life- eating, exercise, work and travel and there is extensive help about monitoring and adjustment of glucose levels, and how to prevent and cope with emergencies. The book focuses particularly on the preventive, detection and treatmentof diabetic tissue damage, including heart disease. Children, the elderly, and those from varied ethnic backgrounds have dedicated chapters, as do men and women with diabetes.
'Practical Diabetes Care' gently guides those who wish to establish new diabetic services, and provides more detailed specialist information for those who wish to enhance the diabetes care they already provide.
The author has many years of practical experience in the field of diabetes care and has written widely on the topic for professionals and patients.

The Herbal Pharmacy
It's not a book, it's a CD-ROM but it delivers what it promises: a Herbal Pharmacy.
It's the best herbal Materia Medica program I know of, with close to 300 plants and about 100 formulas. The information is accurate, too - Brigitte has been a practising herbalist for quite a few years.
Welcome to The Herbal Pharmacy CD Rom. We hope that this CD will help you benefit from the wonderful healing properties of plants as well as guide you to using them safely and effectively. Herbal medicine is one of the most time-tested human traditions on the face of the Earth. The information you are about to read has been well researched, and although the modern scientific method has given us great insights into herbs, more research is needed and will certainly continue. Nonetheless, herbal medicine has benefited millions of people for thousands of years. I myself have been a practitioner for over 27 years, and my undiminished enthusiasm for herbal healing stems from my experiences of seeing herbs help many lives. A bibliography is also provided which will, I hope, guide you to some of the excellent and detailed literature available in the field of herbal medicine.
Health is a gift that makes life worthwhile. Herbs can certainly help us along that path, but they should not be relied upon simply as a band-aid to fix a health problem. I encourage you to look deeply at the causes of illness and seek to live a healthier lifestyle whenever possible. This includes having healthy relationships, eating a wholesome diet, and exercising. We must also avoid the things that damage health, such as stress, smoking, exposure to pollutants, and an unhealthy lifestyle.
Provided in this program is information on how to use herbs, as well as herbal blends. Each herbal description includes contraindictions, such as dangerous side effects, to which you should pay careful attention. Many of the contraindications only occur in extremely large doses and would never be a problem with normal use. However, there are some plants that should best be used with professional counsel, and many should be avoided during pregnancy. In listing contraindications, I have chosen to err on the side of safety, rather than ignore any potential dangers. Remember just because something is from a plant does not mean it is appropriate for everyone to use at all times.
In Chinese medicine, different foods have different characteristics, described as energetics. This program is not intended to teach Chinese herbalism, but it does provide the energetics for each herb. I must admit that not everyone agrees on whether an herb is cool, cold or warm. As American herbalism evolves the use of energetics will become a more genuine and accurate part of our own healing tradition, with more agreement between herbal practitioners.
Even though some of the constituents of the plants are listed, herbalists usually prefer to use plants in a more whole form. I firmly believe that using the entire herb, with all of its components, is more effective and often safer than using any one component. Many herbs are becoming endangered. Please support local organic farming by buying herbs from reputable sources, and please avoid harvesting any endangered species. With the burgeoning interest in herbs, we must be careful not to threaten any more species, and you should consider the joy that comes from growing some of these plants yourself.

Medical information science requires analytic tools. This is achieved by developing and assessing methods and systems for the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of patient data, aided by scientific discovery. Cancer Informatics in Post-Genomic Era provides both the necessary methodology and practical information tools.
Key challenges include integrating research and clinical care, sharing data, and establishing partnerships within and across sectors of patient diagnosis and treatment.
Addressing important clinical questions in cancer research will benefit from expanding computational biology.
The advent of genomic and proteomic technologies has ushered forth the era of genuine medicine. The promise of these advances is true "personalized medicine" where treatment strategies can be individually tailored and advance to initiating intervention before visible symptoms appear.

Highly illustrated in full colour, the new edition continues to provide clear, concise and comprehensive coverage of the clinical and pathological features of a wide range of oral diseases. It provides a compact and readable text for dental students, which covers the clinicopathological features and pathogenesis of oral diseases, and meets the requirements of the undergraduate curriculum. Book Description:
This publication originates from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Environmental Radiation: Impact on Ecosystems and Human Health and Predictive Models, held in Pisa, Italy, in June 2001. The book offers not only basic information on the action mechanisms of UV radiation on ecosystems and various biological systems, but also a picture of the possible scenarios of the long-term global increase of environmental UV radiation, with emphasis on the research aspects aimed at the proper quantitative assessment of risk factors and the formulation of reliable predictive models. The purpose of the authors is to present a critical discussion on how changes in UV radiation will affect ecosystems and the biological processes needed to sustain life on Earth and to provide useful hints for future actions of governmental and international agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations. The book is structured in four sections: the first one is devoted to a general overview of the consequences of ozone depletion and to the basic concepts of radiation measurements and monitoring; the other three sections are devoted to the effects on plants, aquatic ecosystems and human health.

Book Description:
From reflexology and rolfing to shiatsu and dream work, we are confronted today by a welter of alternative medical therapies. But as James Whorton shows in Nature Cures, the recent explosion in alternative medicine actually reflects two centuries of competition and conflict between mainstream medicine and numerous unorthodox systems. This is the first comprehensive history of alternative medicine in America, examining the major systems that have emerged from 1800 to the present. Writing with wit and with fairness to all sides, Whorton offers a fascinating look at alternative health systems such as homeopathy, water cures, Mesmerism, Christian Science, osteopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, and acupuncture. He highlights the birth and growth of each system (including European roots where appropriate) and vividly describes both the theories and the therapies developed within each system, including such dubious practices as hour-long walks barefoot in snow or Samuel Thompson’s “puking and steaming regimen. In particular, Whorton illuminates the philosophy of “natural healing that has been espoused by alternative practitioners throughout history and the distinctive interpretations of “nature cure developed by the different systems. Though he doesn’t hesitate to point out the failings of these systems, he also shows that some “cult medicines have eventually won recognition from practitioners of mainstream medicine. Throughout, Whorton writes with a light touch and quotes from contemporary humorists such as Mark Twain. His book is an engaging yet authoritative history that highlights the course of alternative medicine in the U.S., providing valuable background to the wide range of therapies available today.

Book Description:
Although chemical methods of analysis, especially chromatography, are now accepted as standard techniques for the identification of many vegetable materials, microscopical structure is long established as providing a most useful and reliable criterion. Microscopy is particularly applicable to the exmaination of mixtures when individual components can readily be recognised whereas no satisfactory chromatographic identification would be possible. Microscopy also has the advantages of requiring only small quantities of the material and, once the technique has been acquired, a conclusion as to whether or not a sample is genuine can be reached very rapidly.
As this book is intended primarily for use in the verification of materials, for ease of location we have arranged the contents in alphabetical order according to their commonly accepted names. We have also provided separate indices of Synonyms and Botanical Sources.
“All the drawings in this book have been made solely by ourselves from previously authenticated samples. For the drugs and spices, which usually occur commercially in the powdered form, number 60 grade powders were prepared for examination, but for the culinary herbs, which are more usually available in the whole or broken condition, fragments of a suitable size were examined. The drawings were made at a magnification of 500, using a camera lucida, from fresh mounts prepared as described in the section on Practical Methods. In preparing the drawings our aim has been to illustrate the diagnostic characters for each material and we have excluded cell contents which are common to a morphological group but are not otherwise diagnostic, for example, aleurone grains and fixed oil globules in seeds. The descriptions, similarly, are intended to give a detailed account of the actual characters seen in the fragments rather than the full histology of the plant organ from which the materials are derived. We have quoted dimensions of cells and other particles only when they are of value in distinguishing between closely similar materials.

Book Description:
Interest in and usage of herbal preparations as alternatives to pharmaceuticals has exploded in recent years. Having a complete herbal reference on hand is now absolutely necessary for doctors and other healers when a patient wants to add herbs–let’s say St. John’s wort–to his drug regimen. Should the patient stop taking the Paxil he’s been on for depression, and if so, how long must he wait before he can start taking the St. Johns wort, and what’s the recommended dosage?
The PDR for Herbal Medicines will go a long way towards answering such questions. The physician in this case would learn, after consulting the PDR, that “St. John’s wort taken concomitantly with an SSRI … may lead to an increased effect and possible toxicity ’serotonin syndrome’, e.g., sweating, tremor, flushing, confusion and agitation. The same physician will also learn that the German Federal Health Authority’s Commission E, which has studied the effects of hundreds of herbs, approved St. John’s wort for depressive moods, among other conditions.
For more information, the physician can read about the trade names, descriptions of all the medicinal parts of the plant, actions and pharmacology (including the compounds and their effects, with citations), the results of clinical trials, contraindications, precautions and adverse reactions (photosensitization is a biggie for St. John’s wort), dosage information, and a complete list of literature citations.
The second edition of this mammoth guide includes over 100 entries more than the first, bringing the total to more than 700. Additions include a selection of Asian herbs, such as Buplerum Chinese (also known as Chinese thoroughwax), which is used in Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, and homeopathic preparations; a directory of manufacturers (with Internet addresses when available), a safety guide (don’t use kava kava while nursing), and more. There’s even a section that lists unproven uses for each herb. But make no mistake: this is a mainstream reference that relies on scientific proof above all. Therefore, this is not a guide for everyone, but for scientific and medical reference, it’s a helpful and comprehensive resource, and even those who push the herbal envelope will find much valuable information here. –Stefanie Durbin

Book Description:
Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins’s diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there’s always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight–especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption–their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as “the fat-producing hormone.
Dr. Atkins’s diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though–those who’ve tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins’s patients–more than 25,000 of them–have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus.

Book Description:
“What is mind? “Can we build synthetic or artificial minds? Think these questions are only reserved for Science Fiction? Well, not anymore. This collection presents a diverse overview of where the development of artificial minds is as the twenty first century begins. Examined from nearly all viewpoints, Visions of Mind includes perspectives from philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, social studies and artificial intelligence. This collection comes largely as a result of many conferences and symposiums conducted by many of the leading minds on this topic. At the core is Professor Aaron Sloman’s symposium from the spring 2000 UK Society for Artificial Intelligence conference. Authors from that symposium, as well as others from around the world have updated their perspectives and contributed to this powerful book. The result is a multi-disciplinary approach to the long term problem of designing a human-like mind, whether for scientific, social, or engineering purposes. The topics addressed within this text are valuable to both artificial intelligence and cognitive science, and also to the academic disciplines that they draw on and feed. Among those disciplines are philosophy, computer science, and psychology.

Book Description:
The Handbook of Parenting concerns itself with:
*different types of parents–mothers and fathers, single, adolescent, and adoptive parents;
*basic characteristics of parenting–behaviors, knowledge, beliefs, and expectations about parenting;
*forces that shape parenting–evolution, genetics, biology, employment, social class, culture, environment, and history;
*problems faced by parents–handicap, marital difficulties, drug addiction; and
*practical concerns of parenting–how to promote children’s health, foster social adjustment and cognitive competence, and interact with school, legal, and public officials.
Contributors to the Handbook of Parenting have worked in different ways toward understanding all these diverse aspects of parenting, and all look to the most recent research and thinking in the field to shed light on many topics every parent wonders about.
Each chapter addresses a different but central topic in parenting; each is rooted in current thinking and theory, as well as classical and modern research in that topic; each has been written to be read and absorbed in a single sitting. In addition, each chapter follows a standard organization, including an introduction to the chapter as a whole, followed by historical considerations of the topic, a discussion of central issues and theory, a review of classical and modern research, forecasts of future directions of theory and research, and a set of conclusions. Of course, contributors’ own convictions and research are considered, but contributions to this new edition present all major points of view and central lines of inquiry and interpret them broadly.
The Handbook of Parenting is intended to be both comprehensive and state of the art. As the expanded scope of this second edition amply shows, parenting is naturally and closely allied with many other fields.

Book Description:
Although the brain is the most complex entity in the universe, it can be studied broadly as well as in great detail by focusing on five of its major systems: emotional, social, cognitive, physical, and reflective. In Teaching to the Brain’s Natural Learning Systems, Barbara K. Given has cautiously investigated brain structures and functions of these five systems and applied findings from neurobiology to education without making leaps of judgment or unfounded claims. Thus, this is the first book that translates neuroscience into an educational framework for lesson planning and teaching.
The framework can serve as a mental model for an ongoing assessment of youngsters’ basic human needs to be themselves, to belong, to know, to do, and to experiment and explore. It can also help teachers assess the roles they play (mentor/model, collaborator, facilitator, coach, and talent scout) and the personal/professional qualities they bring to the classroom (passion, vision, intention, action, and reflection). This is a practical book for educators based on current neurobiological insights into learning.

Biology undergraduates, medical students and life-science graduate students often have limited mathematical skills. Similarly, physics, math and engineering students have little patience for the detailed facts that make up much of biological knowledge. Teaching computational neuroscience as an integrated discipline requires that both groups be brought forward onto common ground. This book does this by making ancillary material available in an appendix and providing basic explanations without becoming bogged down in unnecessary details. The book will be suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students taking a computational neuroscience course and also to anyone with an interest in the uses of the computer in modeling the nervous system.

Book Description:
With this Third Edition, the authors and contributors set a new standard for textbooks in the field by tailoring the study of plant physiology to virtually every studentproviding the basics for introductory courses without sacrificing the more challenging material sought by upper-division and graduate-level students.
Key pedagogical changes to the text will result in a shorter book. Material typically considered prerequisite for plant physiology courses, as well as advanced material from the Second Edition, will be removed and posted at an affiliated Web site, while many new or revised figures and photographs (now in full color), study questions, and a glossary of key terms will be added. Despite the streamlining of the text, the new edition incorporates all the important new developments in plant physiology, especially in cell, molecular, and developmental biology.
The Third Edition’s interactive Web component is keyed to textbook chapters and referenced from the book. It includes WebTopics (elaborating on selected topics discussed in the text), WebEssays (discussions of cutting-edge research topics, written by those who did the work), additional study questions (by chapter), additional references, and suggestions for further reading.
