Daniel Charles Mattis, “Statistical Mechanics Made Easy: A Guide for Students and Researchers”
World Scientific | April 2003 | ISBN: 981238166X | PDF | 2 Mb | 266 pages
This book is an elaboration of the author’s lecture notes in a graduate course in statistical physics and thermodynamics, augmented by some material suitable for self-teaching as well as for undergraduate study. The first 4 or 5 chapters are suitable for an undergraduate course for engineers and physicists in Thermodynamics and Statistical Physics and include detailed study of the various ensembles and their connections to applied thermodynamics. The Debye law of specific heats and reasons for deviations from the Debye formulas are covered, as are the Einstein theories of Brownian motion, black-body radiation and specific heat of solids. Van der Waals gases and the reason for the apparent failure of his Law of Corresponding States are discussed.
The last 5 chapters treat topics of recent interest to researchers, including: the Ising and Potts models, spin waves in ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic media, sound propagation in non-ideal gases and the decay of sound waves, introduction to the understanding of glasses and spin glasses, superfluidity and superconductivity.
The selection of material is wide-ranging and the mathematics for handling it completely self-contained, ranging from counting (probability theory) to quantum field theory as used in the study of fermions, bosons and as an adjunct in the solutions of the equations of classical diffusion-reaction theory. In addition to the standard material found in most recent books on statistical physics the constellation of topics covered in this text includes numerous original items:
Generalization of “negative temperature” to interacting spins
Derivation of Gibbs’ factor from first principles
Exact free energy of interacting particles in 1D (e.g., classical and quantum Tonk’s gas)
Introduction to virial expansions, Equations of State, Correlation Functions and “critical exponents”
Superfluidity in ideal and non-ideal fluids (both Bogolubov and Feynman theories)
Superconductivity: thermodynamical approach and the BCS theory
Derivation of “Central Limit Theorem” and its applications
Boltzmann’s “H-Theorem” and the nonlinear Boltzmann equation
Exact solution of nonlinear Boltzmann Equation for electrons in time-dependent electric field and the derivation of Joule heating, transport parameters in crossed electric and magnetic fields, etc.
Frequency spectrum and decay of sound waves in gases
Exact evaluation of free energy and thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional Ising model in regular and fully frustrated (spin-glass like) lattices
The “zipper” model of crystal fracture or polymer coagulation - calculation of Tc
Potts model in 2D: duality and Tc
“Doi’s theory” of diffusion-limited chemical reactions with some exact results - including the evaluation of statistical fluctuations in radioactive decay
Thermodynamic Green Functions and their applications to fermions and bosons with an example drawn from random matrix theory

Roger Trigg, Religion in Public Life: Must Faith Be Privatized?
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0199279802 | 2007 | PDF | 0.7 MB | 275 pages
How far can religion play a part in the public sphere, or should it be only a private matter? Roger Trigg examines this question in the context of today’s pluralist societies, where many different beliefs clamour for attention. Should we celebrate diversity, or are matters of truth at stake? In particular, can we maintain our love of freedom, while cutting it off from religious roots? In societies in which there are many conflicting beliefs, the place of religion is a growing political issue. Should all religions be equally welcomed in the public square?
Favouring one religion over others may appear to be a failure to treat all citizens equally, yet for citizens in many countries their Christian heritage is woven into their way of life. Whether it is the issue of same-sex marriages, the right of French schoolgirls to wear Islamic headscarves, or just the public display of Christmas trees, all societies have to work out a consistent approach to the public influence of religion.

Revolutionaries of the Cosmos: The Astro-Physicists
Oxford University Press, USA| 332 pages | 2005-12-23 | ISBN:0198570996 | PDF | 6.1MB
Galileo, Newton, Herschel, Huggins, Hale, Eddington, Shapley and Hubble: these astronomers applied ideas drawn from physics to astronomy and made dramatic changes to the world-pictures that they inherited. They showed that celestial objects are composed of the same materials as the earth and that they behave in the same way. They displaced successively the earth, the sun and finally the milky way galaxy from being the centre of the universe. This book contains their biographies and outlines their greatest discoveries. Hard work, physical insight, desire for fame and a strong belief in the rightness of their own ideas were characteristics of all eight. Their often quirky personalities led them into bitter controversies with their contemporaries. But their successes arose from the outstanding clarity of their thoughts, their practical ability and their strong sense of direction in science.

Christopher Tyerman, The Crusades: A Very Short Introduction
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0192806556 | 2005 | PDF | 3.8 MB | 185 pages
Crusading fervour gripped Europe for over 200 years, creating one of the most extraordinary, vivid episodes in world history. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most romantic of Christian expeditions, or the last of the barbarian invasions, they have fascinated generations ever since, and their legacy of ideas and imagery has resonated through the centuries, inspiring Hollywood movies and great works of literature.
Even today, to invoke the Crusades is to stir deep cultural myths, assumptions and prejudices. Yet despite their powerful hold on our imaginations, our knowledge of them remains obscured an distorted by time. Were the Crusaders motivated by spiritual rewards, or by greed? Were the Crusades an experiment in European colonialism, or a manifestation of religious love? How were they organized and founded? With customary flair and originality, Christopher Tyerman picks his way through the many debates to present a clear and lively discussion of the Crusades; bringing together issues of colonialism, cultural exchange, economic exploitation, and the relationship between past and present.

Exploring the Quantum: Atoms, Cavities, and Photons (Oxford Graduate Texts)
Oxford University Press, USA | 616 pages | 2006-09-18 | ISBN: 0198509146 | PDF | 10.31MB
The counter-intuitive aspects of quantum physics have been for long illustrated by thought experiments, from Einstein’s photon box to Schrodinger’s cat. These experiments have now become real, with single particles - electrons, atoms or photons - directly unveiling the weird features of the quantum. State superpositions, entanglement and complementarity define a novel quantum logic which can be harnessed for information processing, raising great hopes for applications. This book describes a class of such thought experiments made real. Juggling with atoms and photons confined in cavities, ions or cold atoms in traps, is here an incentive to shed a new light on the basic concepts of quantum physics. Measurement processes and decoherence at the quantum-classical boundary are highlighted. This volume, which combines theory and experiments, will be of interest to students in quantum physics, teachers seeking illustrations for their lectures and new problem sets, researchers in quantum optics and quantum information.

It has been more than twenty years since desktop publishing reinvented design, and it’s clear that there is a growing need for designers and artists to learn programming skills to fill the widening gap between their ideas and the capability of their purchased software. This book is an introduction to the concepts of computer programming within the context of the visual arts. It offers a comprehensive reference and text for Processing (www.processing.org), an open-source programming language that can be used by students, artists, designers, architects, researchers, and anyone who wants to program images, animation, and interactivity.
The ideas in Processing have been tested in classrooms, workshops, and arts institutions, including UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, New York University, and Harvard University. Tutorial units make up the bulk of the book and introduce the syntax and concepts of software (including variables, functions, and object-oriented programming), cover such topics as photography and drawing in relation to software, and feature many short, prototypical example programs with related images and explanations. More advanced professional projects from such domains as animation, performance, and typography are discussed in interviews with their creators. “Extensions” present concise introductions to further areas of investigation, including computer vision, sound, and electronics. Appendixes, references to other material, and a glossary contain additional technical details. Processing can be used by reading each unit in order, or by following each category from the beginning of the book to the end. The Processing software and all of the code presented can be downloaded and run for future exploration.

While building on the skills you already have, Expert SQL Server 2005 Development will help you become an even better developer by focusing on best practices and demonstrating how to design high-performance, maintainable database applications.
This book starts by reintroducing the database as a integral part of the software development ecosystem. You’ll learn how to think about SQL Server development as you would any other software development. For example, there’s no reason you can’t architect and test database routines just as you would architect and test application code. And nothing should stop you from implementing the types of exception handling and security rules that are considered so important in other tiers, even if they are usually ignored in the database.
You’ll learn how to apply development methodologies like these to produce high-quality encryption and SQLCLR solutions. Furthermore, you’ll discover how to exploit a variety of tools that SQL Server offers in order to properly use dynamic SQL and to improve concurrency in your applications. Finally, you’ll become well versed in implementing spatial and temporal database designs, as well as approaching graph and hierarchy problems.
