Restriction Endonucleases (Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology)CRC | ISBN: 084938205X | Edition - 2007-07-23 | PDF | 368 pages | 14.3Mb
The automated identification of biological objects or groups has been a dream among taxonomists and systematists for centuries. However, progress in designing and implementing practical systems for fully automated taxon identification has been frustratingly slow. Regardless, the dream has never died. Recent developments in computer architectures and innovations in software design have placed the tools needed to realize this vision in the hands of the systematics community, not several years hence, but now. And not just for DNA barcodes or other molecular data, but for digital images of organisms, digital sounds, digitized chemical data - essentially any type of digital data. Based on evidence accumulated over the last decade and written by applied researchers, Automated Taxon Identification in Systematics explores contemporary applications of quantitative approaches to the problem of taxon recognition. The book begins by reviewing the current state of systematics and placing automated taxon identification in the context of contemporary trends, needs, and opportunities. The chapters present and evaluate different aspects of current automated system designs. They then provide descriptions of case studies in which different theoretical and practical aspects of the overall group-identification problem are identified, analyzed, and discussed. A recurring theme through the chapters is the relationship between taxonomic identification, automated group identification, and morphometrics. This collection provides a bridge between these communities and between them and the wider world of applied taxonomy. The only book-length treatment that explores automated group identification in systematic context, this text also includes introductions to basic aspects of the fields of contemporary artificial intelligence and mathematical group recognition for the entire biological community.

K. Frank, Michael M, Harvey I, John P (Authors), "Samter's Immunologic Diseases 6th edition"Publisher: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins | English | 103 pages | 13.2 MB | ISBN: 0071388365 | RS.com
In this sixth edition the authors continue to emphasize the immune system of humans and the immunologic basis of human disease. The bibliographies are still rather extensive but have the added intent of providing a pathway to "finding the right additional information." Many authors are new and the emphasis in some chapters has changed as might be expected in a fast-moving field such as immunology. Overall, however, this edition is similar to the previous one in content and emphasis. They faced an issue in this edition of how to handle infectious diseases in which, in most cases, the immune system was just doing "its thing." The major question in infectious diseases for the immunologist is to understand its limitations and compromises in an agent related fashion and to understand how infection contributes to the development of immunologic diseases. Consequently, they have included overviews of how the immune system deals with microbes rather than, in most cases, discussing each disease entity separately.

Macrophages: A Practical ApproachOxford University Press | ISBN: 0199636885 | October 23, 2000 | PDF | 228 pages | 2.6 MB
Macrophages are an important part of the immune response and are characterized by their ability to phagocytose foreign matter. However the difficulties involved in macrophage isolation mean they are some of the body's least explored cells. Macrophage Methodology describes how to isolate moderate to high yields of viable cells from a variety of specific tissue sites under both normal and pathological conditions and then goes on to give protocols for macrophage purification. The third chapter covers techniques used to identify and measure endocytic and phagocytic capabilities using immunochemistry and fluorescent analysis. Chapter four identifies the key issues relating to the study of macrophages as antigen presenting cells and has protocols for the major assays used to measure antigen processing and presentation. Also covered are the theoretical and practical issues related to the processing and presentation of intracellular pathogens for which macrophages are the major host cell. The methods described for measuring macrophage secretory products concentrate on bioassays for molecules where no ELISA is available. The next two chapters cover measuring macrophage activity in vitro and in vivo. Finally methods are described for the analysis of gene expression in macrophages. A variety of broad techniques have been brought together in one affordable volume to make Macrophage Methodology an essential buy for anyone studying macrophages.

Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer (US$129)Stationary Office | Pages: 650 | 2006-10 | ISBN: 1402060157 | 13 MB
The knowledge of molecular defects that lead to cancer is increasing rapidly. This has created a need for a textbook that conveys a comprehensive review of this topic. "Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer", describes molecular processes whose deregulation is important in the formation of tumours. The material is developed from basic cell signalling pathways to their roles in the clinical manifestation of specific cancers. Topics covered include molecular events intrinsic to tumour cells (leading to growth deregulation, extended lifespan, and the ability to invade surrounding tissue), protective mechanisms that prevent transformation (including DNA repair and epigenetic regulation), tumour-host interactions (with the endocrine system, the immune system, and blood vessel formation), and the underlying molecular defects of individual cancers. This book is an essential resource for researchers, graduate students and oncologists. It will also aid in drug discovery by identifying molecular targets. The growing insight generated by research into molecular carcinogenesis and the absence of comparably comprehensive and systematic textbooks makes this publication important and timely.

Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine Stationary Office | Pages: 320 | 2007-07-16 | ISBN: 1420053159 | 5 MB
Encouraged by the medicinal success of quinine, early 19th century scientists hoped strychnine, another plant alkaloid with remarkable properties, might also become a new weapon against disease. Physicians tried for over a century, despite growing evidence to the contrary, to treat everything from paralysis to constipation with it. But strychnine proved only to be disappointingly deadly-relegating its fate almost entirely to animal control, the dangerous adulteration of foods, and criminal exploits. The NOTORIOUS and TRUE story of how a POISONOUS alkaloid... Bitter Nemesis: The Intimate History of Strychnine presents a scholarly and compelling history of this fascinating chemical substance from its discovery to present times. A renowned editor for the Dictionary of Natural Products, Dr. John Buckingham fuses his eclectic interests into an extraordinary mix of original research spanning the realms of history, medicine, literature, chemistry, and forensics. ...Changed the course of HISTORY! Uncovering details and logistics from the earliest experiments performed in an era when proper scientific trials for testing new drugs were still in their infancy, the author explores strychnine's trial-and-error contributions to scientific, medical, and forensic developments. He also investigates historical milestones and the perception of strychnine in popular culture-including criminal notoriety, accidental misuse, and new claims of strychnine's benefits that extend through to the present day. Juxtaposing the real trials, mistrials, and persistent curiosity associated with one of history's most notorious pharmaceutical failures, Bitter Nemesis offers rare insight into the anarchic, yet inspired landscape, practices, and legacy of 19th century science.
