This is your guide to building Internet applications and user interfaces with the Mozilla component framework, which is best known for the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird email client. Programming Firefox demonstrates how to use the XML User Interface Language (XUL) with open source tools in the framework's Cross-Platform Component (XPCOM) library to develop a variety of projects, such as commercial web applications and Firefox extensions.
This book serves as both a programmer's reference and an in-depth tutorial, so not only do you get a comprehensive look at XUL's capabilities--from simple interface design to complex, multitier applications with real-time operations--but you also learn how to build a complete working application with XUL. If you're coming from a Java or .NET environment, you'll be amazed at how quickly large-scale applications can be constructed with XPCOM and XUL.
Topics in Programming Firefox include:
- An overview of Firefox technology
- An introduction to the graphical elements that compose a XUL application
- Firefox development tools and the process used to design and build applications
- Managing an application with multiple content areas
- Introduction to Resource Description Files, and how the Firefox interface renders RDF
- Manipulating XHTML with JavaScript
- Displaying documents using the Scalable Vector Graphics standard and HTML Canvas
- The XML Binding Language and interface overlays to extend Firefox
- Implementing the next-generation forms interface through XForms
Programming Firefox is ideal for the designer or developer charged with delivering innovative standards-based Internet applications, whether they're web server applications or Internet-enabled desktop applications. It's not just a how-to book, but a what-if exploration that encourages you to push the envelope of the Internet experience.

Design patterns have been used with great success in software programming. They improve productivity, creativity, and efficiency in web design and development, and they reduce code bloat and complexity. In the context of CSS and HTML, design patterns are sets of common functionality that work across various browsers and screen readers, without sacrificing design values or accessibility or relying on hacks and filters. But until now they have not been applied systematically to HTML and CSS web design and development.
With the help of Pro CSS and HTML Design Patterns, you can reap the benefits of using design patterns in your HTML and CSS code. The book provides you with all the CSS and HTML design patterns you need. Web development expert and author Michael Bowers then takes you through multiple design patterns for text, backgrounds, borders, images, forms, layouts, and much more. He shows you exactly how each one works, and how to use them most effectively in your own projects. After you learn about these design patterns, you'll wonder how you ever developed web sites without them!

This book is great if you develop websites, especially if you maintain a webserver. I am fairly well versed on basic security measures, but there was alot of stuff in this book that I didn't know. Its not a book for someone who is looking for an in-depth detailed book about network security, but its a really good overview of web attacks and how to avoid being hit.
The book is also well written, and easy and fun to read. The writers do a good job of making the content fun and entertaining. You won't be disapointed with this book unless you are already very familiar with many different types of web attacks.

Divided into four parts, LAN Switch Security provides you with steps you
can take to ensure the integrity of both voice and data traffic
traveling over Layer 2 devices. Part I covers vulnerabilities in Layer 2
protocols and how to configure switches to prevent attacks against those
vulnerabilities. Part II addresses denial-of-service (DoS) attacks on an
Ethernet switch and shows how those attacks can be mitigated. Part III
shows how a switch can actually augment the security of a network
through the utilization of wirespeed access control list (ACL)
processing and IEEE 802.1x for user authentication and authorization.
Part IV examines future developments from the LinkSec working group at
the IEEE. For all parts, most of the content is vendor independent and
is useful for all network architects deploying Ethernet switches.
After reading this book, you will have an in-depth understanding of LAN
security and be prepared to plug the security holes that exist in a
great number of campus networks.
- Use port security to protect against CAM attacks
- Prevent spanning-tree attacks
- Isolate VLANs with proper configuration techniques
- Protect against rogue DHCP servers
- Block ARP snooping
- Prevent IPv6 neighbor discovery and router solicitation exploitation
- Identify Power over Ethernet vulnerabilities
- Mitigate risks from HSRP and VRPP
- Stop information leaks with CDP, PaGP, VTP, CGMP and other Cisco
ancillary protocols
- Understand and prevent DoS attacks against switches
- Enforce simple wirespeed security policies with ACLs
- Implement user authentication on a port base with IEEE 802.1x
- Use new IEEE protocols to encrypt all Ethernet frames at wirespeed.

A+ Network Security Exams in a Nutshell
A Desktop Quick Reference
If you're preparing for the new CompTIA 2006 certification in A+, or the current Network+ and Security+
certifications, you'll find this book invaluable.
It provides all the information you need to get ready for these exams, including the four new A+ exams -- the
required Essentials exam and three elective exams that pertain to your area of specialization.
As with other O'Reilly Nutshell books for certification exams, A+, Network+ and Security + in a Nutshell
follows a proven style and approach.
It reviews all of the topics needed to master each exam in a remarkably concise format, with required knowledge
boiled down to the core.
Instead of plowing through 500 to 700 pages to prepare for each exam, this book covers each one in
approximately 150 pages.
And because the objectives for the three elective A+ exams are redundant, and the book covers them in one
section.

Networking For Dummies
8 edition
ISBN: 0470056207
412 pages {CHM}
May 29, 2007
Networking For Dummies
Networking for Dummies upholds the series' proletarian tradition by entertainingly explaining local area
networks (LAN) to the rest of us.
Written with three different--but equally "clueless in technical matters -audiences in mind, Lowe's book
appeals to novice network users, novice network builder/administrators, and the managers who must finance the
activities of the other two groups.
A large part of this book is devoted to user issues such as
"Accessing a network drive from WordPerfect"
"What is a print job?"
Other chapters explain the differences among the various network architectures and network operating systems.
In addition, the book pays a lot of attention to troubleshooting, particularly for common problems.
For these reasons, Networking for Dummies makes a fine resource for people who are new to a networked
environment.
If you are a network administrator, you might want to get a copy (or three) of this book for the corporate
library and refer it to all askers of brain-dead questions.
The book's primary shortcoming is its ignorance of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Novell IntranetWare.
(Coverage of NT stops at version 3.51 and coverage of NetWare stops at version 4.1.)
Still, lots of organizations still run these network operating systems, and if yours is one of them, this book
may fit your needs admirably.

The Cambridge World History of Food - 2 vol
Have the French always enjoyed their renowned cuisine?
When did Russians begin to eat pirogi?
What was the first Indonesian spice to be cultivated elsewhere in the world?
Questions such as these make for good Jeopardy material, but they're far from trivial, just ask anyone with a passion for good food and a curiosity for where that food originated.
That person will know instinctively that the best way to approach a culture and, indeed, the human animal is through the stomach.
For this individual, The Cambridge World History of Food will be something of a bible, and the best of gifts.
A massive scholarly tome in two volumes and more than 2,000 pages, the CWHF encompasses a wealth of learning that touches on nearly every aspect of human life.
(It also reveals the answers to the three earlier questions:
No, French cuisine as we know it is a 19th-century development
In the 16th century, following the conquest of the Volga Tatar
Ginger, in colonial Mexico.)
Thoroughly researched and highly accessible despite its formidable layout, the set addresses a groaning board of topics past and present, from the diet of prehistoric humans to the role of iron in combating disease; from the domestication of animals to the spread of once isolated ethnic cuisines in a fast-globalizing world.
Of greatest interest to general readers is its concluding section a dictionary of the world's food plants, which gives brief accounts of items both common and exotic, from abalong to Zuttano avocado.

Networking for Dummies upholds the series' proletarian tradition by entertainingly explaining local area networks (LAN) to the rest of us. Written with three different--but equally "clueless in technical matters;quot;--audiences in mind, Lowe's book appeals to novice network users, novice network builder/administrators, and the managers who must finance the activities of the other two groups.
A large part of this book is devoted to user issues such as "Accessing a network drive from WordPerfect" and "What is a print job?" Other chapters explain the differences among the various network architectures and network operating systems. In addition, the book pays a lot of attention to troubleshooting, particularly for common problems.

This book is an experiment in discourse. It uses the medium of the story to engage the issues and ideas of business. Unlike other such experiments, such as "The Goal", this book is profoundly intellectual in the very best sense of the term. And it needs to be, for it is tackling a deep idea, the notion that our computer systems replicate our social relationships and that managing either can be improved by learning from the other.
The notion that computer and social systems are ecologically intertwined is at first startling, but within seconds it becomes commonplace. Of course they are intertwined—how could they not be? But then why have we not made more of this in the past? Well, that is what bright ideas are all about: they show us things we are pretty sure we already knew but have never brought properly into focus.
Too many among us believe that technology and technology decision making is “someone else’s job.” Who can forget the CEO involved in a white collar fraud case who responded to the question, “You had a computer on your desk didn’t you?” with “Yes, but it was just for show.” Prison isn’t bad enough for this kind of mindset. We should extract his critical organs and donate them to more deserving people higher on the evolutionary food chain. Fortunately, this kind of thinking will soon migrate from being passively stupid to being prosecutably malfeasant.

Essential Reading This is one of the best books I have ever read. Nabokov writes great prose, and actually twists your mind into thinking what Humbert is doing is not really all that wrong. It makes you sick, but you start to feel for Humbert. It's a fantastic read, even if you think you already know the story, or if you've seen one of the movies. This is am amazing book, one that I would recommend to everyone.

War on Crime revises the history of the New Deal transformation and suggests a new model for political historyone which recognizes that cultural phenomena and the political realm produce, between them, an idea of "the state." The war on crime was fought with guns and pens, movies and legislation, radio and government hearings. All of these methods illuminate this period of state transformation and perceptions of that emergent state, in the years of the first New Deal. The study of the creation of G-men and gangsters as cultural heroes in this period not only explores the Depression-era obsession with crime and celebrity, but it also lends insight on how citizens understood a nation undergoing large political and social changes.

This book is ideal for any programmer with .NET experience to learn the new technology. Anyone who has experimented with .NET 1.1 or implemented full-scale solutions for their employers would be a perfect candidate to easily absorb all of the materials within this book. You should have some general understanding of how a basic database works, with experience in developing software to access a database object such as a stored procedure.
The book contains a dozen projects you can use right off the disk with minimal setup needed. Each project has step-by-step instructions on installing the source code to your local machine. The goal of the chapter and accompanying project code is to enable you to understand and quickly modify the project to enhance its capabilities or to learn how to implement some of the features it uses within different situations. Through the repeated studying of simple project walkthroughs and hands-on experimentation, you learn more about the design and creation of full projects in the 2.0 version of ASP.NET. The book references some of the advancements since the older version 1.1, but not to any level of detail. Most of the logic and material is gauged toward explaining the deeper concepts within the 2.0 version in its entirety.
This book is designed in similar fashion to other Wrox Press Instant Results titles, in that it serves as more of a reference manual of usable and instructional source projects, as compared to a traditional end-to-end book. This is because most programmers do not need to absorb all of the available information on a particular subject in a traditional fashion. Many times, programmers are looking to find the answers within the code, and then read content or material on it as an afterthought. This book aims to satisfy this tendency, but not at the expense of providing quality information and useful instruction at the same time. Thus, the topics and concepts that must be learned are taught from basic to advanced forms, across all of the 12 projects, with overlapping tools and features to drive home the concepts.

Learn to Design High Performance Switches and Routers for Today's Ever Growing Internet Traffic
As Internet traffic continues to grow, and demands for quality of service become more stringent, researchers and engineers can turn to High Performance Switches and Routers for tested and proven solutions. This text presents the latest developments in high performance switches and routers, coupled with step-by-step design guidance.
More than 550 figures and examples enable readers to grasp all the theories and algorithms used for design and implementation.
The authors begin with an examination of the architecture of the Internet, as it is now and as it will be in the future. Then, they examine router architectures and their building blocks, and the challenging issues involved in designing high performance, high-speed routers. Examples of commercial high-end routers are provided.
Next, the authors discuss the main functions of the line cards of a core router, including route lookup, packet classification, and traffic management for quality of service control. The bulk of the text is then dedicated to packet switching designs. Coverage includes the various available architectures, algorithms, and technologies. Among the topics covered, readers will find detailed discussions of the latest innovations in electrical and optical packet switching. The final chapter discusses state-of-the-science commercial chipsets used to build routers. Readers learn their architecture and functions, using the theories and conceptual designs presented in the previous chapters as a foundation.
Although implementation techniques for switches and routers will continue to evolve, the fundamental theories and principles of this text will serve readers for years to come. In addition to bringing researchers and engineers up to date with the latest designs, this text, with its focus on illustrations and examples, is an ideal graduate-level textbook.

Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson, following the humorous antics of Calvin, an imaginative six-year old boy, and Hobbes, his energetic and sardonic—albeit stuffed—tiger. (The pair are named after John Calvin, a 16th century French Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, a 17th century English political philosopher.
The strip was syndicated daily from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. At its height, Calvin and Hobbes was carried by over 2,400 newspapers worldwide. To date, more than 30 million copies of the 18 Calvin and Hobbes books have been printed, and popular culture is still replete with references to the strip.
The strip is vaguely set in the contemporary Midwestern United States, on the outskirts of suburbia, a location probably inspired by Watterson's home town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Calvin and Hobbes appear in most of the strips, while very few focus on other members of Calvin's family.
The broad themes of the strip deal with Calvin's flights of fantasy, his friendship with Hobbes, his misadventures, his views on a diverse range of political and cultural issues and his relationships and interactions with his parents, classmates, educators, and other members of society. The dual nature of Hobbes is also a recurring motif. Calvin sees Hobbes one way (alive), while other characters see him as something else (a stuffed animal).
Even though the series does not mention specific political figures like political strips such as Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury, it does examine broad issues like environmentalism and the flaws of opinion polls. A number of cartoons feature Calvin announcing the results of "polls of household six-year-olds" to his father, treating his father's position as though it were an elected political office.

Ulysses has been the subject of controversy since copies of the first English edition were burned by the New York Post Office authorities. Today critical interest centres on the authority of the text, and this edition, complete with an invaluable Introduction, notes, and appendices, republishes for the first time, without interference, the original 1922 text.
Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic book--although he found it sufficiently unobscene to allow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of these adjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even (in a close-focus sort of way) suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung up in the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book. Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigated with relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged, and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's sheer command of the English language.
Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the first question about any story is: What happens?. In the case of Ulysses, the answer might be Everything. William Blake, one of literature's sublime myopics, saw the universe in a grain of sand. Joyce saw it in Dublin, Ireland, on June 16, 1904, a day distinguished by its utter normality. Two characters, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, go about their separate business, crossing paths with a gallery of indelible Dubliners. We watch them teach, eat, stroll the streets, argue, and (in Bloom's case) masturbate. And thanks to the book's stream-of-consciousness technique--which suggests no mere stream but an impossibly deep, swift-running river--we're privy to their thoughts, emotions, and memories. The result? Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordian folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism.
Both characters add their glorious intonations to the music of Joyce's prose. Dedalus's accent--that of a freelance aesthetician, who dabbles here and there in what we might call Early Yeats Lite--will be familiar to readers of Portrait of an Artist As a Young Man. But Bloom's wistful sensualism (and naive curiosity) is something else entirely. Seen through his eyes, a rundown corner of a Dublin graveyard is a figure for hope and hopelessness, mortality and dogged survival: "Mr Bloom walked unheeded along his grove by saddened angels, crosses, broken pillars, family vaults, stone hopes praying with upcast eyes, old Ireland's hearts and hands. More sensible to spend the money on some charity for the living. Pray for the repose of the soul of. Does anybody really?"
The 1934 text, as corrected and reset in 1961. Ulysses is one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. It was not easy to find a publisher in America willing to take it on, and when Jane Jeap and Margaret Anderson started printing extracts from the book their literary magazine The Little Review in 1918, they were arrested and charged with publishing obscenity. They were fined $100, and even The New York Times expressed satisfaction with their conviction. Ulysses was not published in book form until 1922, when another American woman, Sylvia Beach, published it in Paris for her Shakespeare & Company. Ulysses was not available legally in any English-speaking country until 1934, when Random House successfully defended Joyce against obscenity charges and published it in the Modern Library. This edition follows the complete and unabridged text as corrected and reset in 1961. Judge John Woolsey's decision lifting the ban against Ulysses is reprinted, along with a letter from Joyce to Bennett Cerf, the publisher of Random House, and the original foreword to the book by Morris L. Ernst, who defended Ulysses during the trial.

Product Details
Book Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (15 July, 2002)
ISBN: 0195148207
Book author: Richard Abrams
Amazon Rating: 4.0
Book Description:
In this fully-revised fourth edition of what has long been the standard textbook for the field, Dr. Richard Abrams once again demonstrates his unique ability to analyze and present a wealth of new(and often technical) material in a lucid, compelling, and highly readable fashion. Hundreds of new clinical studies called from the more than 1500 published since the third edition appeared have been analyzed in depth and incorporated throughout the book. An important new chapter has been added on Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation(TMS) therapy, a treatment for depression that is widely-used in Europe and expected to become available soon for clinical use in the United States. Dr. Abrams exposes the scientific flaws in several widely-cited reports, while focusing on the few carefully-controlled studies that provide solid support for the results claimed. The sections on the electrical stimulus, seizing introduction, seizure quality, and treatment electrode placement have been completely revised and updated with new information on those clinical and technical issues that are presently of greatest concern to practitioners and researchers. A comprehensive critical assessment of the nature of the seizure threshold and the validity of the stimulus titration method for ECT dosing is presented for the first time, with conclusions and recommendations that many will find surprising. The continued controversy over the relative efficacies of unilateral and bitemporal ECT is revisited in light of the latest dosing strategies and treatment outcomes reported, and of the latest results obtained with bifrontal ECT. The potential clinical and theoretical advantages of the recently-rediscovered technique of ultrabrief pulse therapy are explained in detail. The chapter on the memory and cognitive consequences of ECT has been expanded to focus on the subjective memory effects of treatment, with new analysis of the possible biological basis for the improvement in subjective memory so often reported. Recently-published claims of persistent or permanent memory effects of ECT are refuted in detail. In full accordance with the American Psychiatric Association’s new guidelines for the practice of ECT, Dr. Abrams’ book remains the essential practical guide and reference work for all those who prescribe, perform, or assist with ECT, or are interested in learning more about the subject. Dean Koontz Icebound Audio CD Unabridged
Random House Audio

2007
The arctic night is endless.
The fear is numbing. Screams freeze in the throat.
Death arrives in shades of white.
Cold-blooded murder seems right at home....the chill of the grave.
Review:
Enjoyable Audiobook (wtfk's)
I'm surprised it took me so long to get around to trying Koontz.
I've been a Stephen King fan for years but I was never really tempted to try Koontz.
I'm so happy that I finally got around to picking up a few of his books because I can't get enough of him now.
I've really been enjoying listening to his books on CD and MP3. I use them as my "bedtime stories". It's a great way to squeeze in extra books and they're great entertainment.
I'm picking up every single one that I can find so I'm getting my Koontz education fairly quickly.
Icebound was really well done with good narration.
I never thought I'd enjoy listening to books on tape as much as I do.
If you haven't tried them, I'd encourage you to pick up a few.
A good narrator makes all the difference!

An underground classic since its first publication in 1996, Fight Club is widely recognized as one of the most original and provocative novels of the last decade. Now the author adds his own voice to the critical debate he generated. In a new Introduction, he discusses the various interpretations in the popular media of Fight Club and the movie it inspired, as well as his personal reactions to the work's reception and the influence that the Fight Club phenomenon has already had on our culture.Chuck Palahniuk's darkly funny first novel tells the story of a disenfranchised young man frustrated with his bureacratic job and superficial relationships and disillusioned with the consumer culture's prepackaged pleasures. Relief for him and his peers comes in the form of Tyler Durden, the intensely charismatic inventor of Fight Club. Waiters, clerks, and middlemen seek out the visceral satisfaction of secret after-hours boxing matches in the basements of bars, thinking they have found a way to live beyond their confining and stultifying lives. But in Tyler's world there are no rules, no limits, no brakes.

As STAR WARS fans await the upcoming EPISODE TWO: ATTACK OF THE CLONES, the time is ripe to catch up on the events that occurred prior to Episode One and between Episodes One and Two. Here are two STAR WARS novels, written by fan favorites Luceno and Foster, and both read by Alexander Adams (aka Golden Voice Grover Gardner). Adams reads expertly and confidently, and his storytelling powers flow with Jedi force. CLOAK OF DECEPTION is the story of political intrigue and economic espionage in which the shadowy Dark Side sets out to destroy Chancellor Valorum, setting the groundwork for the Trade Federation blockade of Naboo. THE APPROACHING STORM follows young Anakin Skywalker and his Jedi Master, Obi Wan Kenobi, on an interstellar and interpersonal adventure. The production quality of these audiobooks is clean and professional except for the overuse of canned sound effects--everything from blaster fire and rocket blasts to the belches and flatulent sounds of alien creatures--that will likely annoy most listeners over the age of 10. While good Foley sound work can enhance a full-cast dramatization, overdone sound effects can easily mar a straight reading. S.E.S.

Each chapter in this book has been written as a reference on a specific hardware or software topic. Due to the hard work of my editors, you can begin reading anywhere you like because each chapter is self-contained. However, I recommend that you read from front to back, because the linear order of the book makes a great deal of sense.
I wrote this book for myself — and for every other Apple laptop owner who desires to become a laptop techno-wizard. In these pages, you’ll find a guide to both your laptop’s hardware and Mac OS X Tiger, the latest version of Apple’s superb operating system. After I cover the basics that every laptop owner should know, you find out how to accomplish all sorts of cutting-edge audio, visual, and Internet projects. (Oh, and if you already have another of my books, you know that I don’t skimp on the power user tips and tricks that’ll save you time, effort, and money.)
Like my dozen-or-so other For Dummies titles, I respect and use the same English language you learned in school, avoiding jargon, ridiculous computer acronyms, and confusing techno-babble whenever possible. (Plus, I try to bring out the humor that’s hidden inside every computer. Finding out how to use your Mac should be fun, and not a chore!)
This book has been written using the latest MacBook Pro computer, so owners of older Mac laptops that aren’t running Intel processors may not be able to follow along with everything I cover. However, if you’ve upgraded an older G4 laptop with Mac OS X Tiger and the iLife ’06 application suite, you should be able to use most of the book with no problem!

This book is now in its fifth edition and, like aged cheddar cheese, is getting better with time. This edition is packed with the maximum number of pages that can be bound into a paperback book, so if you’re planning on taking a book to read on a subway ride, take this book and leave all the others behind. I’d hate to think that I caused some loyal readers back pain. Several changes have been made in this edition. First of all, many of the older tutorials have been retired to make room for the new features. I’ve also included a new Quick Start that takes you through constructing an entire character and using the Character Studio tools. I’ve also made room for an entire part covering Character Studio and several other new chapters covering the new features. To make room for the new Editable Poly features, I’ve taken away a
chapter covering Editable Mesh objects and I’ve split the modifiers into several chapters, making them easier to locate and use.

Book Description:
Every day we are surrounded by chemicals that are potentially harmful. Some of these we take intentionally in the form of drugs; some we take unknowingly through the food we eat, and the environment around us. John Timbrell explores what makes particular chemicals harmful, what their effects are, and how we can test for them. He examines drugs such as Paracetamol and what it does to the body; Ricin, the most toxic substance known to man; Paraquat, a widely available weedkiller; and how the puffer fish, eaten as a delicacy in Japan, can kill. Using case studies from all around the world, such as the Spanish Oil syndrome which made over 20,000 people ill in Madrid, Timbrell uncovers the facts behind chemical scares. He shows how, with a rational, scientific, and balanced approach, risks can be assessed and managed safely.

An important merit of the MPEG-4 video standard is that it not only provided tools and algorithms for enhancing the compression efficiency of existing MPEG-2 and H.263 standards, but also contributed key innovative solutions for new multimedia applications such as: real-time video streaming to PCs and cell-phones over Internet and wireless networks, interactive services, and multimedia access. Many of these solutions are currently used in practice or have been important step-stones for new standards and technologies. In this lecture, the authors focus on three key innovations of MPEG-4 video that will continue to serve as an inspiration and basis for emerging standards, products, and technologies. The three topics highlighted in this lecture are object based coding and scalability, Fine Granularity Scalability (FGS), and error resilience tools. This lecture is aimed at engineering students as well as professionals interested in learning about these MPEG-4 technologies for multimedia streaming and interaction. Finally, this lecture is not aimed as a substitute or manual for the MPEG-4 standard, but rather as a tutorial focused on the principles and algorithms underlying it.

As you'd expect of Apple, the iPhone is gorgeous. iPhone: The Missing Manual is a book as breathtaking as its subject. Teeming with high-quality color graphics, each custom designed page helps you accomplish specific tasks -- everything from Web browsing to watching videos. Written by New York Times columnist and Missing Manual series creator David Pogue, this book shows you how to get the most out of your new Apple iPhone.
The name iPhone may be doing Apple a disservice. This machine is so packed with possibilities that the cellphone may actually be the least interesting part. The iPhone is at least three products merged into one: a phone, a wide-screen iPod and a wireless, touch-screen Internet communicator. The iPhone's beauty alone may be enough for you to dig for your credit cards, but its Mac OS X-based software makes it not so much a smartphone as something out of the film "Minority Report."
The real magic, however, awaits when you browse the Web. You get to see the entire Web page on the iPhone's screen. All of this is cooked up with Apple's traditional secret sauce of simplicity, intelligence and whimsy.
Written by New York Times columnist and Missing Manual series creator David Pogue, iPhone: The Missing Manual shows you everything they need to know to get the most out of your new Apple iPhone. Full of humor, tips, tricks, and surprises, this book teaches you how to extend iPhone's usefulness by exploiting its links to the Web as well as its connection to Macs or PCs; how to save money using Internet-based messages instead of phone calls; and how to fill the iPhone with TV shows and DVDs for free.

This is the first of two books serving as an expanded and up-dated version of Windows Server 2003 Security Infrastructures for Windows 2003 Server R2 and SP1 & SP2. The authors choose to encompass this material within two books in order to illustrate the intricacies of the different paths used to secure MS Windows server networks.
Since its release in 2003 the Microsoft Exchange server has had two important updates, SP1 and SP2. SP1, allows users to increase their security, reliability and simplify the administration of the program. Within SP1, Microsoft has implemented R2 which improves identity and access management across security-related boundaries. R2 also improves branch office server management and increases the efficiency of storage setup and management. The second update, SP2 minimizes spam, pop-ups and unwanted downloads. These two updated have added an enormous amount of programming security to the server software.

With today's security challenges and threats growing more sophisticated, perimeter defense alone is no longer sufficient. Few organizations are closed entities with well-defined security perimeters, which has led to the creation of perimeterless networks with ubiquitous access. Organizations need to have internal security systems that are more comprehensive, pervasive, and tightly integrated than in the past.
Cisco® Network Admission Control (NAC) Appliance, formerly known as Cisco Clean Access, provides a powerful host security policy inspection, enforcement, and remediation solution that is designed to meet these new challenges. Cisco NAC Appliance allows you to enforce host security policies on all hosts (managed and unmanaged) as they enter the interior of the network, regardless of their access method, ownership, device type, application set, or operating system. Cisco NAC Appliance provides proactive protection at the network entry point.
Cisco NAC Appliance provides you with all the information needed to understand, design, configure, deploy, and troubleshoot the Cisco NAC Appliance solution. You will learn about all aspects of the NAC Appliance solution including configuration and best practices for design, implementation, troubleshooting, and creating a host security policy.

Web Hacking: Attacks and Defense
By Stuart McClure, Saumil Shah, Shreeraj Shah,
Review:
Great Book for Web Developers or Administrators
This book is great if you develop websites, especially if you maintain a webserver. I am fairly well versed on basic security measures, but there was alot of stuff in this book that I didn't know. Its not a book for someone who is looking for an in-depth detailed book about network security, but its a really good overview of web attacks and how to avoid being hit.
The book is also well written, and easy and fun to read. The writers do a good job of making the content fun and entertaining. You won't be disapointed with this book unless you are already very familiar with many different types of web attacks.

Implement bulletproof Cisco security the battle-tested Hacking Exposed way
Defend against the sneakiest attacks by looking at your Cisco network and devices through the eyes of the intruder. Hacking Exposed Cisco Networks shows you, step-by-step, how hackers target exposed systems, gain access, and pilfer compromised networks. All device-specific and network-centered security issues are covered alongside real-world examples, in-depth case studies, and detailed countermeasures. It’s all here--from switch, router, firewall, wireless, and VPN vulnerabilities to Layer 2 man-in-the-middle, VLAN jumping, BGP, DoS, and DDoS attacks. You’ll prevent tomorrow’s catastrophe by learning how new flaws in Cisco-centered networks are discovered and abused by cyber-criminals. Plus, you’ll get undocumented Cisco commands, security evaluation templates, and vital security tools.
Use the tried-and-true Hacking Exposed methodology to find, exploit, and plug security holes in Cisco devices and networks
- Locate vulnerable Cisco networks using Google and BGP queries, wardialing, fuzzing, host fingerprinting, and portscanning
- Abuse Cisco failover protocols, punch holes in firewalls, and break into VPN tunnels
- Use blackbox testing to uncover data input validation errors, hidden backdoors, HTTP, and SNMP vulnerabilities
- Gain network access using password and SNMP community guessing, Telnet session hijacking, and searching for open TFTP servers
- Find out how IOS exploits are written and if a Cisco router can be used as an attack platform

Configuring Windows 2000 WITHOUT Active Directory
Why Use Windows 2000 without Active Directory?
We’re actually asking two different questions here:Why use Windows 2000 at all,and why use Windows 2000 without Active Directory? There is more to Windows 2000 than just Active Directory features—as this book shows. But there’s no doubt that Windows 2000 was written with Active Directory in mind, which is reflected in the standard documentation that accompanies the software. Both questions deserve a separate look.

The Medieval City
(Greenwood Guides to Historic Events of the Medieval World)
Greenwood Press
By Norman Pounds
ISBN 0313324980
2005
265 pages {PDF}
The Medieval City
Greenwood Guides to Historic Events of the Medieval World
Identifying the attraction of the city in its urbanitas, its “urbanity,” or the way of living in a city, Pounds discusses first its origins in prehistoric and classical Greek urban revolutions.
During the Middle Ages, the city grew primarily between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, remaining essentially the same until the Industrial Revolution.
Pounds provides chapters on the medieval city’s planning, in terms of
Streets
Structures
Life in the medieval city
The roles of the Church and the city government in its operation
The development of crafts and trade in the city
And the issues of
Urban health
Wealth
Welfare
Concluding with the role of the city in history, Pounds suggests that the value of the city depended upon its balance of social classes.
Its need for trade and profit to satisfy personal desires through the accumulation of wealth and its consequent economic power.
Its political power as a representative body within the kingdom, and its social role in the rise of literacy and education and in nationalism.

Howard Zinn People's History of the United States
1492 to Present
Harper Perennial Modern Classics
ISBN 0060838655
768 Pages {PDF}
2005
People's History of the United States
1492 to Present
According to this classic of revisionist American history, narratives of national unity and progress are a smoke screen disguising the ceaseless conflict between elites and the masses whom they oppress and exploit.
Historian Zinn sides with the latter group in chronicling
Indians struggle against Europeans
Blacks struggle against racism
Women's struggle against patriarchy
and Workers ' struggle against capitalists.
First published in 1980, the volume sums up decades of post-war scholarship into a definitive statement of leftist
multicultural
anti-imperialist historiography.
This edition updates that project with new chapters on the Clinton and Bush Presidencies
Which deplore Clinton's pro-business agenda, celebrate the 1999 Seattle anti-globalization protests and apologize for previous editions' slighting of the struggles of Latinos and gays.
Zinn's work is an vital corrective to triumphalist accounts, but his uncompromising radicalism shades, at times, into cynicism.
Zinn views the Bill of Rights, universal suffrage, affirmative action and collective bargaining not as fundamental (albeit imperfect) extensions of freedom, but as tactical concessions by monied elites to defuse and contain more revolutionary impulses; voting, in fact, is but the most insidious of the "controls." It's too bad that Zinn dismisses two centuries of talk about "patriotism, democracy, national interest" as mere "slogans" and "pretense," because the history he recounts is in large part the effort of downtrodden people to claim these ideals for their own.

When people use the word “crusade,” though, they may not recognize its distinctly religious
meaning and history, even though they might embark on their crusade with religious enthusiasm.
The Crusades Almanac discusses various topics, including
The conquering of Jerusalem by the Caliph Umar
Pilgrimages to the Holy Land
The traditions of chivalry
Shiites and Sunnis

Welcome to ASP.NET 2.0 All-in-One Desk Reference For Dummies, the Wone ASP.NET programming book that’s designed to replace an entire shelf full of the dull and tedious ASP.NET books you’d otherwise have to buy. This book contains all the basic and not-so-basic information you need to know to get going with ASP.NET Web programming, including the basics of working with Visual Studio or Visual Web Developer Express, using Web controls, working with databases, and learning the basics of both C# and Visual Basic .NET.
Of course, you can (and probably should) eventually buy separate books on each of these topics. It won’t take long before your bookshelf is bulging with 10,000 or more pages of detailed information about every imaginable nuance of ASP.NET programming. But before you’re ready to tackle each of those topics in depth, you need a birds-eye picture. That’s what this book is about.
The basic idea here is that we’ve tried to wring out the 100 or so most useful pages of information on eight different ASP.NET programming topics: basic programming, Web controls, HTML, C#, Visual Basic, database programming, the .NET Framework, and advanced programming topics. Thus, here’s a nice, trim 900-or-so-page book that’s really eight 100-page books. (Well, they didn’t all come out to 100 pages each. But close!)

Visual Basic For Application (VBA for short) is a programming environment designed to work with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and Power Point). components in each application (for example, worksheets or documents) are exposed as objects to the programmer to use and manipulate to a desired end. Almost anything you cand do through the normal use of the Office application can also be automated thourgh programming.
VBA is a complete programming language, but you can't use it outside the application in which it is integrated. This does not mean VBA can be integrated only with Office programs. Any software vendor that decides to implement VBA can include it with their application.
VBA is relatively easy to learn, but to use it in a new application, you must first become familiar with the "object model" of the application. For example, the "Document" and "Dictionary" objects are specific to the Word object mode, whereas the "workbook", "Worksheet" and "Range" objects are specific to the Excel object model. As you proceed through this book, you will see that the Excel Object model is faifly extensive; however, if you are familiar with Excel, you will find that using theese objects is generally straightforward.
