A large part of this book is devoted to user issues such as
"Accessing a network drive from WordPerfect"
"What is a print job?"
Other chapters explain the differences among the various network architectures and network operating systems.
In addition, the book pays a lot of attention to troubleshooting, particularly for common problems.

For these reasons, Networking for Dummies makes a fine resource for people who are new to a networked

environment.
If you are a network administrator, you might want to get a copy (or three) of this book for the corporate

library and refer it to all askers of brain-dead questions.

The book's primary shortcoming is its ignorance of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Novell IntranetWare.
(Coverage of NT stops at version 3.51 and coverage of NetWare stops at version 4.1.)
Still, lots of organizations still run these network operating systems, and if yours is one of them, this book

may fit your needs admirably.

This book is an experiment in discourse. It uses the medium of the story to engage the issues and ideas of business. Unlike other such experiments, such as "The Goal", this book is profoundly intellectual in the very best sense of the term. Too many among us believe that technology and technology decision making is “someone else’s job.” Who can forget the CEO involved in a white collar fraud case who responded to the question, “You had a computer on your desk didn’t you?” with “Yes, but it was just for show.” Prison isn’t bad enough for this kind of mindset. We should extract his critical organs and donate them to more deserving people higher on the evolutionary food chain. Fortunately, this kind of thinking will soon migrate from being passively stupid to being prosecutably malfeasant.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Nabokov writes great prose, and actually twists your mind into thinking what Humbert is doing is not really all that wrong. It makes you sick, but you start to feel for Humbert. It's a fantastic read, even if you think you already know the story, or if you've seen one of the movies. This is am amazing book, one that I would recommend to everyone.

This book is ideal for any programmer with .NET experience to learn the new technology. This is because most programmers do not need to absorb all of the available information on a particular subject in a traditional fashion. Many times, programmers are looking to find the answers within the code, and then read content or material on it as an afterthought. This book aims to satisfy this tendency, but not at the expense of providing quality information and useful instruction at the same time. Thus, the topics and concepts that must be learned are taught from basic to advanced forms, across all of the 12 projects, with overlapping tools and features to drive home the concepts.

Calvin and Hobbes is a comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson, following the humorous antics of Calvin, an imaginative six-year old boy, and Hobbes, his energetic and sardonic—albeit stuffed—tiger. (The pair are named after John Calvin, a 16th century French Reformation theologian, and Thomas Hobbes, a 17th century English political philosopher.

The strip was syndicated daily from November 18, 1985 to December 31, 1995. At its height, Calvin and Hobbes was carried by over 2,400 newspapers worldwide. To date, more than 30 million copies of the 18 Calvin and Hobbes books have been printed, and popular culture is still replete with references to the strip.

The strip is vaguely set in the contemporary Midwestern United States, on the outskirts of suburbia, a location probably inspired by Watterson's home town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Calvin and Hobbes appear in most of the strips, while very few focus on other members of Calvin's family.

The broad themes of the strip deal with Calvin's flights of fantasy, his friendship with Hobbes, his misadventures, his views on a diverse range of political and cultural issues and his relationships and interactions with his parents, classmates, educators, and other members of society. The dual nature of Hobbes is also a recurring motif. Calvin sees Hobbes one way (alive), while other characters see him as something else (a stuffed animal).

Even though the series does not mention specific political figures like political strips such as Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury, it does examine broad issues like environmentalism and the flaws of opinion polls. A number of cartoons feature Calvin announcing the results of "polls of household six-year-olds" to his father, treating his father's position as though it were an elected political office.

Ulysses has been the subject of controversy since copies of the first English edition were burned by the New York Post Office authorities. Today critical interest centres on the authority of the text, and this edition, complete with an invaluable Introduction, notes, and appendices, republishes for the first time, without interference, the original 1922 text.

Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic book--although he found it sufficiently unobscene to allow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of these adjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even (in a close-focus sort of way) suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung up in the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book. Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigated with relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged, and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's sheer command of the English language.

Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the first question about any story is: What happens?. In the case of Ulysses, the answer might be Everything. William Blake, one of literature's sublime myopics, saw the universe in a grain of sand. Joyce saw it in Dublin, Ireland, on June 16, 1904, a day distinguished by its utter normality. Two characters, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, go about their separate business, crossing paths with a gallery of indelible Dubliners. We watch them teach, eat, stroll the streets, argue, and (in Bloom's case) masturbate. And thanks to the book's stream-of-consciousness technique--which suggests no mere stream but an impossibly deep, swift-running river--we're privy to their thoughts, emotions, and memories. The result? Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordian folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism.

Both characters add their glorious intonations to the music of Joyce's prose. Dedalus's accent--that of a freelance aesthetician, who dabbles here and there in what we might call Early Yeats Lite--will be familiar to readers of Portrait of an Artist As a Young Man. But Bloom's wistful sensualism (and naive curiosity) is something else entirely. Seen through his eyes, a rundown corner of a Dublin graveyard is a figure for hope and hopelessness, mortality and dogged survival: "Mr Bloom walked unheeded along his grove by saddened angels, crosses, broken pillars, family vaults, stone hopes praying with upcast eyes, old Ireland's hearts and hands. More sensible to spend the money on some charity for the living. Pray for the repose of the soul of. Does anybody really?"

The 1934 text, as corrected and reset in 1961. Ulysses is one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. It was not easy to find a publisher in America willing to take it on, and when Jane Jeap and Margaret Anderson started printing extracts from the book their literary magazine The Little Review in 1918, they were arrested and charged with publishing obscenity. They were fined $100, and even The New York Times expressed satisfaction with their conviction. Ulysses was not published in book form until 1922, when another American woman, Sylvia Beach, published it in Paris for her Shakespeare & Company. Ulysses was not available legally in any English-speaking country until 1934, when Random House successfully defended Joyce against obscenity charges and published it in the Modern Library. This edition follows the complete and unabridged text as corrected and reset in 1961. Judge John Woolsey's decision lifting the ban against Ulysses is reprinted, along with a letter from Joyce to Bennett Cerf, the publisher of Random House, and the original foreword to the book by Morris L. Ernst, who defended Ulysses during the trial.

Enjoyable Audiobook (wtfk's)

I'm surprised it took me so long to get around to trying Koontz.
I've been a Stephen King fan for years but I was never really tempted to try Koontz.
I'm so happy that I finally got around to picking up a few of his books because I can't get enough of him now.

I've really been enjoying listening to his books on CD and MP3. I use them as my "bedtime stories". It's a great way to squeeze in extra books and they're great entertainment.

I'm picking up every single one that I can find so I'm getting my Koontz education fairly quickly.
Icebound was really well done with good narration.
I never thought I'd enjoy listening to books on tape as much as I do.
If you haven't tried them, I'd encourage you to pick up a few.
A good narrator makes all the difference!

Each chapter in this book has been written as a reference on a specific hardware or software topic. Due to the hard work of my editors, you can begin reading anywhere you like because each chapter is self-contained. However, I recommend that you read from front to back, because the linear order of the book makes a great deal of sense.

I wrote this book for myself — and for every other Apple laptop owner who desires to become a laptop techno-wizard. After I cover the basics that every laptop owner should know, you find out how to accomplish all sorts of cutting-edge audio, visual, and Internet projects. (Oh, and if you already have another of my books, you know that I don’t skimp on the power user tips and tricks that’ll save you time, effort, and money.)

Like my dozen-or-so other For Dummies titles, I respect and use the same English language you learned in school, avoiding jargon, ridiculous computer acronyms, and confusing techno-babble whenever possible. (Plus, I try to bring out the humor that’s hidden inside every computer. Finding out how to use your Mac should be fun, and not a chore!)

This book has been written using the latest MacBook Pro computer, so owners of older Mac laptops that aren’t running Intel processors may not be able to follow along with everything I cover. However, if you’ve upgraded an older G4 laptop with Mac OS X Tiger and the iLife ’06 application suite, you should be able to use most of the book with no problem!

This book is now in its fifth edition and, like aged cheddar cheese, is getting better with time. This edition is packed with the maximum number of pages that can be bound into a paperback book, so if you’re planning on taking a book to read on a subway ride, take this book and leave all the others behind. I’d hate to think that I caused some loyal readers back pain. Several changes have been made in this edition. First of all, many of the older tutorials have been retired to make room for the new features. I’ve also included a new Quick Start that takes you through constructing an entire character and using the Character Studio tools. I’ve also made room for an entire part covering Character Studio and several other new chapters covering the new features. To make room for the new Editable Poly features, I’ve taken away a
chapter covering Editable Mesh objects and I’ve split the modifiers into several chapters, making them easier to locate and use.
