The book offers a unique insight into the life of Rome's first imperial matron, Livia. Reviewing narrative and archeological evidence, Anthony Barret succeeds in showing how Livia was perceived by her contemporaries in light of Augustus' new imperial institutions. Because there's so little information on who Livia really was as a person, Mr. Barret's analysis starts becoming rather speculative when it comes to Livia's private dispositions. The book is thus more of a review of Livia's persona as opposed to her actual beliefs and behavior behind closed doors. At the very least, he succeeds in dispelling many of the anecdotal stories of her as a ambitious master schemer and regicite.
the very least, he succeeds in dispelling many of the anecdotal stories of her as a ambitious master schemer and regicite. These negative qualities are mostly the product of Tacitus' biased accounts which were so wonderfully crafted into Robert Graves' "I, Claudius" books. At the very least, one gets a good picture of the political and social environment Livia found herself in when she married Augustus and how it affected her public image.

Whether you are a FileMaker developer who is new to web publishing, a web developer who is new to FileMaker, or a complete beginner looking to put your data online, this book is for you. In Part I, you learn the basics of how web publishing works and how to write your own HTML and PHP. In Part II, you learn how to build a FileMaker database and install and configure the FileMaker Server to host the database. In Part III, you learn how to put it all together to create web pages that talk to your database and allow people to view the data and, if you like, modify it. Throughout the book, publishing a FileMaker Product Catalog to the web is used as an example. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter. When you are done, you will have a working website!

Database Access with Visual Basic .NET continues to use techniques developed by Jeffrey McManus that provide solutions to problems faced by developers every day. Since data access is the most used feature in corporate development, it is important for developers to understand the most effective and efficient way to access data using .NET technologies. This book provides clear explanations of how to use ADO.NET to access data stored in relational databases, as well as how XML integrates with ADO.NET. The authors use their years of experience to relate key topics to real-world applications through use of Business Cases that include code listings in Visual Basic .NET.
The purpose of this book is to show you how to develop database applications, using Visual Basic.NET and ADO.NET. Even though we expect that most readers will be working with SQL Server, we do not assume that they are experienced with it. You may be new to database applications or only have experience with other databases such as Microsoft Access or Oracle. We have therefore included a hefty overview of Microsoft SQL Server in Chapter 3. If you are experienced with SQL Server, you may want to skip this chapter. However, it covers a wide variety of topics, and you may still find a "nugget" or two that would make reading the chapter worthwhile.
We assume that you are already familiar with Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET). Although we give step-by-step coding instructions and code examples, we do not cover VB.NET syntax in this book. We assume that you are reasonably comfortable with VB.NET and Visual Studio.NET (VS.NET) and do not waste your time reviewing fundamental concepts. For example, we do not normally step through basic tasks, such as opening and saving project files, except maybe the first time you encounter them. We do, however, often show how to do the same thing in several different ways—we hope that this will extend your knowledge of VB.NET, without rehashing the basics. You may also notice variant coding styles, and even screen shots on different versions of Windows—all illustrating the flexibility of VB.NET.

Susan Greenwood, The Nature of Magic: An Anthropology of Consciousness
Berg Publishers | ISBN 1845200950 | 2005 | PDF | 2 MB | 257 pages
This book examines how and why practitioners of nature religion--Western witches, druids, shamans--seek to relate spiritually with nature through "magical consciousness". Greenwood develops a new theory of magical consciousness by arguing that magic ultimately has more to do with the workings of the human mind in terms of an expanded awareness than with socio-cultural explanations. She combines her own subjective insights gained from magical practice with practitioners' in-depth accounts and sustained academic theory on the process of magic. She also tracks magical consciousness in philosophy, myth, folklore and story-telling, and the hi-tech discourse of postmodernity.

Amy Felder, CEPC, «Savory Sweets : From Ingredients to Plated Desserts»
Wiley | ISBN 0471740586 | 2007-02-09 | 272 pages| PDF | 3.5 Mb
A new approach to flavor, ingredients, and techniques
"From a simple idea, Amy Felder has practically conceived a new category of dessert ideation. And her instructional skills, honed in classroom kitchens, allow her to convey this knowledge in a clear, systematic, and inspirational fashion."
--Peter Reinhart, author of The Bread Baker's Apprentice and The Whole Grain Revival: Mastering the Art of Whole Grain Breads
Traditionally, pastry chefs have worked mainly with a sweet flavor palette, leaving savory tastes and techniques to their culinary colleagues. Today, fusion cuisine promises new blends of the savory and sweet. For pastry chefs, this means a new world of flavor opportunities--as well as the need to integrate them into dynamic dishes and cooking practice.
The pastry chef's key to the culinary side of the kitchen, Savory Sweets offers a complete, systematic discussion of flavor, techniques, and ingredients, then puts the discussion into practice using specific plated desserts. Author, chef, and acclaimed teacher Amy Felder brings together the culinary and pastry realms, giving students and professional chefs a new, up-to-date approach to flavor. Though the book comes from a baking perspective, culinary chefs will also find the discussion of savory flavors and fusion cuisine extremely useful.
Savory Sweets is divided into four parts:
- Vocabulary starts with a scientific explanation of taste, then establishes concepts of flavor and overall plate profile
- Culinary Skills looks at cooking methods other than baking and what they have to offer plated desserts; these techniques include sauce work and manipulation of texture
- Ingredients examines an assortment of vegetables, herbs, spices, dairy products, and dry pantry products with regard to flavor and partner flavors for each ingredient; plated dishes showcasing each ingredient are also provided
- Plated Desserts applies the information from the previous three sections in the form of eight specific desserts, each with its individual personality, plate and flavor profiles, theme, and integration of pastry and culinary practice; recipes for all of the plates' components are included
Filled with helpful figures and brilliant color photographs, Savory Sweets offers advanced baking students a unique, sophisticated, and practical classroom text, while also providing professional chefs and culinary students with an organized and detailed approach to flavor.

Patricia Bragg / Paul Bragg, «Build Powerful Nerve Force: It controls Your Life --Keep it Healthy»
Bragg Health Sciences | ISBN: 0877900949 | Revised edition (May 25, 2002) | 208 pages | PDF | 3.5 Mb
If you are suffering from stress overload, chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression or other related illnesses you really should read this book.
Nerve Force is the source of all life! Life itself flows through your nerves – never forget that! When fully supplied with Nerve Force, we are enthusiastic, happy, fit and ambitious. We overcome difficulties and are ready to accept the challenges that life offers. Problems of all kinds become manageable when we are confident that we have the Nerve Force to cope with them.
People with powerful Nerve Force cannot be beaten. They rise up again for a new start, no matter how often they might fail. In the end, they win! Thus, 95% of humanity is dominated by the other 5%. It’s Nerve Force that does the leading and makes the difference!
Nerve Force Is the Key to Vital Living
Your health, strength, vitality and endurance are directly measured by the degree of your Nerve Force. It gives you the reserve power that makes life successful and fascinating. The world is full of people with the brains and ability to rise to the top, but who lack the necessary Nerve Force to push them forward. A person’s beauty, charm and vivacity are directly related to the Nerve Force that makes them sparkle with radiant health.
Your body is a complicated machine; Nerve Force and physical health are interdependent. Nerve Force is the driving power – but its generation, in turn, depends upon the harmonious activities of the vital organs. Your body is nourished throughout its every part by a vast circulatory system that carries oxygenated blood from your heart and lungs. If an organ is not functioning properly, your blood will not contain the elements necessary to create the right sort of Nerve Force. Your stomach must digest efficiently. The digestion assimilating process must be dependable. The eliminating organs – the bowels, lungs, kidneys and skin – must have tremendous Nerve Force to work efficiently. The spleen, liver and all the vital organs of the complex blood-making laboratory must all work harmoniously.
If you arise every morning feeling dull and fatigued, if you are without ambition or goals, if you feel old, worn and dragged-out, or if the future looks hopeless and you feel defeated and helpless, then there’s something wrong with your nervous system! Your Nerve Force is depleted and must be renewed! Good news: You don’t have to feel this way! Read on and learn how.
There is one thing you can do – start rebuilding your vital Nerve Force today! The body is a miraculous self-cleansing and self-healing organism when you give it and Mother Nature a chance. Unfortunately, most people, especially Americans today, are depleting their Nerve Force and are whipping their nerves in a desperate effort to compensate. This only makes everything worse.
