The VBScript standard has changed over time, and several new things have been introduced since this book first published in 1999. The current standard for VBScript is 5.6. The script debugger, script control, and script encoder have all changed and the Windows Script Component Wizard, regular expressions, and remote scripting have been introduced. Windows Script Host technology has also matured over time and gained in both effectiveness and popularity.

VBScript Programmer's Reference, 2nd Edition begins with discussion of the general syntax, functions, keywords, style, error handling, and similar language-specific topics and then moves into an expanded reference section covering the object models in detail. Book Description:
One of the most fascinating men of his generation, W.H.R. Rivers was a British doctor and psychiatrist as well as a leading ethnologist. Immortalized as the hero of Pat Barker's award-winning Regeneration trilogy, Rivers was the clinician who, in the First World War, cared for the poet Siegfried Sassoon and other infantry officers injured on the western front. His researches into the borders of psychiatry, medicine and religion made him a prominent member of the British intelligentsia of the time, a friend of H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Bertrand Russell. Part of his appeal lay in an extraordinary intellect, mixed with a very real interest in his fellow man. Medicine, Magic and Religion is a prime example of this. A social institution, it is one of Rivers' finest works. In it, Rivers introduced the then revolutionary idea that indigenous practices are indeed rational, when viewed in terms of religious beliefs. Welcome to the second edition of Professional Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET. Crystal Reports is one of the world’s leading software packages for creating interactive reports that can be integrated into a wide range of Windows and Web applications. With more than four million licenses shipped, Crystal Reports is the leader among Windows report writers. Crystal Reports has been in the Visual Studio box since 1993, but with the introduction of Visual Studio .NET 2002, a new version, Crystal Reports .NET, was integrated more closely than ever before. And with the release of Visual Studio .NET 2003, the bar has been raised even higher, with tighter integration and more reporting options. This book will detail the functionality provided with Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET 2003 and how, when, and where you should integrate reports into your .NET applications.

This book does not attempt to be all-inclusive, and it will not teach basic .NET techniques. To be able to deliver a functional guide to Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET, we assume that you have a grasp of essential programming techniques — in this case, a knowledge of programming in Visual Basic .NET and experience using Visual Studio .NET — and that you can apply these skills to a new technology.

This book is for programmers who want a comprehensive guide to the functionality included with Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET. It’s assumed that you have some knowledge of .NET and experience with Visual Studio .NET.

It is mainly aimed at readers who have some experience with Crystal Reports. However, this edition has been specifically updated to include a large section on report design, which can assist new users in learning how to create their own reports. This title should also prove valuable for readers who are new to reporting in general and who want a guide to this free reporting tool they’ve discovered within Visual Studio .NET.

This book covers the features of Crystal Reports for Visual Studio .NET that you’ll find yourself using time and again to build complex reports and integrate them into different .NET applications. We start by explaining how Crystal Reports fits into the .NET platform and how it differs from previous versions of Crystal Reports.

TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - Crystal Reports .NET Overview
Chapter 02 - Getting Started with Crystal Reports .NET
Chapter 03 - Designing Reports
Chapter 04 - Report Integration for Windows-Based Applications
Chapter 05 - Report Integration for Web-Based Applications
Chapter 06 - Creating XML Report Web Services
Chapter 07 - Working with .NET Data
Chapter 08 - Formulas and Logic
Chapter 09 - Working with the Crystal Reports Engine
Chapter 10 - Distributing Your Application

What if you could get, for free, a miracle substance to alleviate symptoms of pain, depression, chronic fatigue, attention deficit disorder, stress, hypertension, back pain, peptic ulcer disease, migraines, arthritis pain, colitis, chronic constipation, kidney stones, heartburn, high cholesterol, morning sickness, and obesity?

You can. This wonder elixir is something we often overlook, yet it is available in unlimited quantities in almost every household.

It is almost too simple to believe that even the water we get from our taps has the power to reduce and eliminate severe medical conditions. Yet in the next few pages you will see how water should be the treatment of choice for pain, inflammation, and autoimmune diseases. Instead of reaching for more drugs, that are increasingly expensive and often have negative side effects, we should drink more water instead. The water you use to treat your ailments doesn't have to be spring water or distilled; purified water from your household tap will do just as well.

Book Description:
Since I was intrigued by the title and have been on to homeopathy for over a year, I decided to add this book to my homeopathy library (currently about 20 books and growing . Already from the start I could see that this book was going to be different than the others. What’s different is that Chris Kurz explains exactly those topics that are difficult to understand in other books in a way that makes intuitive sense to me. He uses images, analogies and even little experiments to get you thinking along the right lines. This approach seemed to work great for me, since even such heavy concepts as “miasms” and “homeoprophylaxis” (homeopathic vaccination) were explained using a metaphor that makes intuitive sense and got me to understand what’s really behind those concepts.

The Digital Video Pocket Guide is concise, easy to use, and is overflowing with the techniques you'll need to know to create great movies. This book is organized, like the popular Digital Photography Pocket Guide, into three chapters: "What Is It?", "How Does It Work?", and "How Do I...Tips, Tricks, and Techniques". Its compact size, organization, and detailed illustrations make it easy to find the information you need. In the first chapter, "What Is It?", you're introduced to the ins and outs of your DV camcorder. Author Derrick Story builds the solid foundation that helps you better understand the camera you have now, and will prove invaluable when shopping for your next camcorder. For instance, what is a tally lamp, and do you need one? What is the difference between the optical and digital zoom? Should you spend the extra money for a 3-CCD chip? Chapter two puts the tools in action. It maps out, step by step, a sure-fire approach to successful movie making -- including home videos, tutorials, and even short features. This chapter takes the worry out of organizing and lets you focus on creativity. Next, you'll accelerate your prowess by learning the rock-solid techniques of video experts. Among the tips and tricks featured in chapter three are how the pros shoot action video, arrange lighting for an interview, and capture clean audio. Finally, the Appendix is packed with well-organized tables and charts on a myriad of topics and includes: a color temperature chart, a guide to color correction gels, a table of everyday lux ratings, a handy cable connector guide, a reference for microphone patterns, and much, much, more. Completely indexed, beautifully illustrated in color, and more compact than those bulky books that never make if off your bedside nightstand, the Digital Video Pocket Guide is the ultimate shooting companion that will help your create the videos you want to show to friends, family, or even the world at large.

Upgrading & Fixing PCs For Dummies
Publisher For Dummies
Author Andy Rathbone
ISBN 0470121025
Release Date 07 May 2007

Loaded with solid advice in the fun style typical of this series, Upgrading
& Fixing PCs for Dummies is an excellent introduction to what makes your computer
go. If you’re sure you can put your new modem or video card in by yourself
(and you can), this book will provide you with the help you need.

Rathbone starts with an introduction to all the mysterious connections on the
back of your computer’s case, teaching you how to distinguish a game port from
a serial port and an audio jack from a network connection. He then moves inside
the case, using drawings and diagrams to illustrate processors, peripheral cards,
memory modules, and other internal components. Troubleshooting occupies much of
this book, and the author explains the basic “identify and isolate” strategy
very well. He also points out what to look and listen for, describing, for example,
the meaning of the beeps you hear when you turn your computer on.

Some of Rathbone’s organizational decisions seem weird. He covers the procedure for
replacing an internal modem in a chapter about all kinds of internal expansion
cards, rather than in the modem chapter. But the information is there and it is well
presented, so Upgrading & Fixing PCs for Dummies makes an excellent resource
for hardware novices.

The Object Primer is a straightforward, easy-to-understand introduction to agile software development (ASD) using object-oriented (OO) and relational database technologies. It covers the fundamental concepts of ASD and OO and describes how to take an agile approach to requirements, analysis, and design techniques applying the techniques of the unified modeling language (UML) 2 as well as other leading-edge techniques, including agile model–driven development (AMDD) and test-driven development (TDD) approaches.

During the 1990s OO superceded the structured paradigm as the primary technology paradigm for software development. Now during the 2000s ASD is superceding traditional, prescriptive approaches to software development. While OO and ASD are often used to develop complex systems, learning them does not need to be complicated. This book is different from many other introductory books about these topics—it is written from the point of view of a real-world developer, someone who has lived through the difficulty of learning these concepts.

This book is aimed at two primary audiences—existing developers and university/college students who want to gain the fundamental skills required to succeed on modern software development projects. Throughout this book I use the term "developer" broadly: a developer is anyone involved in the development of a software application. This includes programmers, analysts, designers, business stakeholders, database administrators, support engineers, and so on. While many people would not include business stakeholders in this, my experience is that active business stakeholder involvement is often the key determinant to the success of a software project. Business stakeholders can actively participate in requirements engineering, analysis, and sometimes, in design—it is clear to me that they should be considered developers. Call me a radical.

In this book, you will find a survey of the latest software development techniques and a wealth of knowledge to get you started on the road to agile. Those new to this community will find an overview of the critical areas of the agile software movement. This book will help you become more productive. The agile principles inside will change the way that you view software development and, ultimately, the way you build software.

Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography--how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).

This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This isn't a book of theory—it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. There's never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

Describing how the Assembly language can be used to develop highly effective C++ applications, this guide covers the development of 32-bit applications for Windows. Areas of focus include optimizing high-level logical structures, creating effective mathematical algorithms, and working with strings and arrays. Code optimization is considered for the Intel platform, taking into account features of the latest models of Intel Pentium processors and how using Assembly code in C++ applications can improve application processing. The use of an assembler to optimize C++ applications is examined in two ways, by developing and compiling Assembly modules that can be linked with the main program written in C++ and using the built-in assembler. Microsoft Visual C++ .Net 2003 is explored as a programming tool, and both the MASM 6.14 and IA-32 assembler compilers, which are used to compile source modules, are considered.

As one of the most powerful development tools, the Microsoft Visual C++ .NET development environment offers the programmer a wide variety of features for the development of applications of any type and level of complexity. Nevertheless, most serious applications are written with much manual work. This is because none of the high-level language development tools can provide maximum performance. This is the truth based on the structure and semantics of high-level languages.

A possible solution to the application optimization problem is the use of assembly language. Note that it is possible to write an application without using this language. There are many programs that do not require optimization. However, with regard to real-time applications, device drivers, multimedia applications, sound processing applications, graphics applications, and any applications, for which the time of execution is important, the use of assembly language is inevitable because no other optimization method will work.

This book will focus on the use of assembly language in programs created with Visual C++ .NET 2003, currently the most powerful C++ development environment. The material of this book will disclose two relatively independent aspects of using it as a stand-alone tool for creating individual procedures in the form of object modules and as a built-in tool integrated in C++ .NET. Microsoft continually improves the inline assembler.

This book is not a tutorial on assembly language, nor on C++ .NET. It assumes that you have a certain knowledge of these programming areas.

This book is targeted at experienced Visual Basic 6 developers who are looking toward the future – Microsoft's .NET platform and its associated Framework. The aim of this book is bring VB6 developers quickly up to speed in these (and other) new important features of Visual Basic .NET.

This book covers not only a new version of Visual Basic, but also the new programming platform on which it runs. It is aimed at developers with a good working knowledge of VB, or ASP and VBScript. No attempt is made at providing a tutorial about the VB language, other than comparisons between VB6 and Visual Basic .NET code techniques, so a good familiarity with VB6 (or at least VBA or VBScript) is necessary to get the full benefit from this book.

This book will also appeal to web developers who are using ASP.NET and intend to use the VB language when developing their ASP.NET sites. The level of integration between ASP.NET and Visual Basic .NET far exceeds that between ASP and VB6, and a comprehensive understanding of Visual Basic .NET will be a huge asset to any web developer using ASP.NET.

The .NET Framework provides a powerful new way to program for both Windows and the Internet, and this may well attract experienced developers from other platforms and languages to .NET and the Visual Basic .NET language. This book will appeal to these people as it provides discussion and examples of commonly performed programming tasks and techniques, allowing rapid transition from other platforms or languages to Visual Basic .NET.

Have you ever been assigned a project and realized that you had no idea how  you  were  going  to  accomplish  it?  Many  developers  have  experienced this feeling when asked to interface their code with a database. With a few exceptions, most developers were busy learning Lisp, linked lists, and big-O notation during their formal education instead of learning the fundamentals of relationship database management systems. When the time comes to interface their code with a database, they turn to a book like the one you are holding.

Whatever the situation, interfacing an application to a database is one of the most  fundamental  tasks  a  developer  is  required  to  perform.  This  book  is designed for developers who either have a pressing task ahead of them or who are curious about how to read database information into their application.

The primary goal of this book is to provide a comprehensive approach to writing code from a Java application to a MySQL database  using  the  industry  standard:  JDBC.  As  you  will  see  later  in  this Introduction, the chapter titles indicate what area of database connectivity and manipulation they cover. The chapters are ordered to reflect the JDBC specification, but we aren’t here to simply describe the specification.

Introduction to Probability Models, 8th Edition, continues to introduce and inspire readers to the art of applying probability theory to phenomena in fields such as engineering, computer science, management and actuarial science, the physical and social sciences, and operations research. Now revised and updated, this best-selling book retains its hallmark intuitive, lively writing style, captivating introduction to applications from diverse disciplines, and plentiful exercises and worked-out examples.

The 8th Edition includes five new sections and numerous new examples and exercises, many of which focus on strategies applicable in risk industries such as insurance or actuarial work.

The five new sections include:
* Section 3.6.4 presents an elementary approach, using only conditional expectation, for computing the expected time until a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables produce a specified pattern.
* Section 3.6.5 derives an identity involving compound Poisson random variables and then uses it to obtain an elegant recursive formula for the probabilities of compound Poisson random variables whose incremental increases are nonnegative and integer valued
* Section 5.4.3 is concerned with a conditional Poisson process, a type of process that is widely applicable in the risk industries
* Section 7.10 presents a derivation of and a new characterization for the classical insurance ruin probability.
* Section 11.8 presents a simulation procedure known as coupling from the past; its use enables one to exactly generate the value of a random variable whose distribution is that of the stationary distribution of a given Markov chain, even in cases where the stationary distribution cannot itself be explicitly determined.

This book, combining analysis and tools from mathematical probability, focuses on a systematic and novel presentation of recent trends in pure and applied mathematics: the emergence of three fields, wavelets, signals and fractals. The unity of basis constructions and their expansions is emphasized as the starting point for the development of bases that are computationally efficient for use in several areas from wavelets to fractals.
The book brings together tools from engineering and math, especially from signal- and image processing, and from harmonic analysis and operator theory. The presentation is aimed at graduate students, as well as users from a diverse spectrum of applications.
Key features:
• A hands-on approach for students, including tutorials and numerous exercises;
• Excellent motivation throughout;
• New pedagogical features: glossary of terms, their use in mathematics and in engineering, help for cross-audiences, image processing, visual presentation of key algorithms, structure and geometry of big matrix computations, explanation of uses of the theory in applications outside of mathematics;
• Includes more than 50 figures with captions, illustrating the main ideas, plus engineering diagrams, graphic renditions of algorithms, and separate illustrations;
• Separate sections in the book explain engineering terms to mathematicians, and operator theory to engineers;
• Each chapter concludes with a helpful guide to the literature allowing students to follow up on the topics in the book.
Palle E.T. Jorgensen is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Iowa. This book is based in part on interdisciplinary courses that he has taught over the last several years, and on his work with his current and former students. His most recent book was written jointly with Ola Bratteli and is entitled Wavelets through a Looking Glass, ©2002 Birkhäuser Boston. Link[rapidshare.com]

Keep Your Brain Alive: 83 Neurobic Exercises

English | 1.99 Mb | PDF | 80 pages | ISBN 0761110526 | Workman Publishing Co. Inc. | May 1999

No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain.

QoS (Quality of Service) and Network Management are old topics. However, the fusion of IP style multimedia and wireless networks (3G) means that network managers who might previously have dealt with one or the other, must now manage and provide service guarantees for the both. This is where Managing Service Level Quality across Wireless and Fixed Networks steps in...

It begins by examining the mechanisms that already existed in fixed IP data networks prior to the introduction of probe and agent technology. A look at these later developments is then supplemented with a real-world scenario of how real time application performance monitoring can not only provide service level management but can also aid in root cause analysis.

This same model is then applied to a wireless environment examining which elements are required to be able to deliver multimedia services across 2nd and 3rd generation mobile networks, detailing the components of data networking that will assist in guaranteeing service level performance and the constraints placed on those guarantees when passing services over an air interface to a wireless-enabled device.

Author(s) brian d foy
ISBN 0596527241
Release Date 16 July 2007

This is the third in O’Reilly’s series of landmark Perl tutorials, which started with Learning Perl, the bestselling introduction that taught you the basics of Perl syntax, and Intermediate Perl, which taught you how to create re-usable Perl software. Mastering Perl pulls everything together to show you how to bend Perl to your will. It convey’s Perl’s special models and programming idioms.

This book isn’t a collection of clever tricks, but a way of thinking about Perl programming so you can integrate the real-life problems of debugging, maintenance, configuration, and other tasks you encounter as a working programmer.

The book explains how to:

* Use advanced regular expressions, including global matches, lookarounds, readable regexes, and regex debugging
* Avoid common programing problems with secure programming techniques
* Profile and benchmark Perl to find out where to focus your improvements
* Wrangle Perl code to make it more presentable and readable
* See how Perl keeps track of package variables and how you can use that for some powerful tricks
* Define subroutines on the fly and turn the tables on normal procedural programming.
* Modify and jury rig modules to fix code without editing the original source
* Let your users configure your programs without touching the code
* Learn how you can detect errors Perl doesn’t report, and how to tell users about them
* Let your Perl program talk back to you by using Log4perl
* Store data for later use in another program, a later run of the same program, or to send them over a network
* Write programs as modules to get the benefit of Perl’s distribution and testing tools

Appendices include “brian’s Guide to Solving Any Perl Problem” to improve your troubleshooting skills, as well as suggested reading to continue your Perl education. Mastering Perl starts you on your path to becoming the person with the answers, and, failing that, the person who knows how to find the answers or discover the problem.

This is a book which uses jokes to highlight grammatical patterns. Humorous learning materials have a number of advantages. Firstly, they increase motivation by being potentially amusing. Secondly, they are memorable and can help the learner to remember grammar. Lastly, they lead to spontaneous practice and consolidation of grammar through the learner's natural desire to share jokes with others.

It is intended for intermediate students although the material will be of use to pre- and the post-intermediate student. It consists of 82 woorksheets to be used to provide supplementary grammar practice. The woorksheets are organised grammatically, consisting of a series of jokes which have a single grammar focus. Each worksheet ends with a task which is designed to help the learner personalise the grammar focus item of the woorksheet. This generally involves learners in producing information about themselves, their attitude and opinions.

Language: English

File type: PDF

This book is an experiment in discourse. It uses the medium of the story to engage the issues and ideas of business. Unlike other such experiments, such as "The Goal", this book is profoundly intellectual in the very best sense of the term. And it needs to be, for it is tackling a deep idea, the notion that our computer systems replicate our social relationships and that managing either can be improved by learning from the other.

The notion that computer and social systems are ecologically intertwined is at first startling, but within seconds it becomes commonplace. Of course they are intertwined—how could they not be? But then why have we not made more of this in the past? Well, that is what bright ideas are all about: they show us things we are pretty sure we already knew but have never brought properly into focus.

Too many among us believe that technology and technology decision making is “someone else’s job. Who can forget the CEO involved in a white collar fraud case who responded to the question, “You had a computer on your desk didn’t you? with “Yes, but it was just for show. Prison isn’t bad enough for this kind of mindset. We should extract his critical organs and donate them to more deserving people higher on the evolutionary food chain. Fortunately, this kind of thinking will soon migrate from being passively stupid to being prosecutably malfeasant.

Book Description:

The world of medicine has become splintered into two factions, that of orthodoxy and its counterpart, alternative or complementary medicine. A problem with alternative medicine is, of course, that of anecdote and hearsay. The solution: the disclosure, in an unassailable fashion, of the underlying biochemical principles for alternative cancer therapies. Cancer and the Search for Selective Biochemical Inhibitors, Second Edition delineates the underlying biochemical principles for alternative cancer therapies. Completely revised and updated, this edition includes coverage of the link between concepts and practices of alternative and conventional medicine. The author examines anticancer plant substances and other alternatives such as Vitamin C, essiac tea, shark cartilage, and cat’s claw. The text also addresses the problem of determining selective and non-toxic enzyme inhibitors for cancer cell metabolic pathways. While an increased number of allopathic professionals are in tune with alternative therapies, the integration of the two factions is far from the norm. Keeping the same format that made its predecessor a benchmark text, this book compares complementary, alternative, and integrative treatments with chemotherapy and other more traditional treatments.

Book Description:

Increasingly viewed as the future of medicine, the field of tissue engineering is still in its infancy. As evidenced in both the scientific and popular press, there exists considerable excitement surrounding the strategy of regenerative medicine. To achieve its highest potential, a series of technological advances must be made. Putting the numerous breakthroughs made in this field into a broad context, Tissue Engineering disseminates current thinking on the development of engineered tissues. Divided into three sections, the book covers the fundamentals of tissue engineering, enabling technologies, and tissue engineering applications. It examines the properties of stem cells, primary cells, growth factors, and extracellular matrix as well as their impact on the development of tissue engineered devices. Contributions focus on those strategies typically incorporated into tissue engineered devices or utilized in their development, including scaffolds, nanocomposites, bioreactors, drug delivery systems, and gene therapy techniques. Finally, the book presents synthetic tissues and organs that are currently under development for regenerative medicine applications. The ability to engineer biocompatible tissue is the hallmark of modern biomedical engineering, integrating all aspects of every sub-discipline in the field. Featuring chapters drawn from the third edition of the best-selling Handbook of Biomedical Engineering as well as new contributions not found in the handbook, Tissue Engineering surveys the latest advances in this relatively young area. The contributing authors are a diverse group with backgrounds in academia, clinical medicine, and industry. Furthermore, the text includes contributions from Europe, Asia, and North America, helping to broaden the views on the development and application of tissue engineered devices.

Scientific American October 2007
PDF | 88 Pages | 11 MB

Scientific American is a popular-science magazine, published (first weekly and later monthly) since August 28, 1845, making it the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It brings articles about new and innovative research to the amateur and lay audience.

Scientific American (informally abbreviated to "SciAm") had a monthly circulation of roughly 555,000 US and 90,000 international as of December 2005.[1] It is a well-respected publication despite not being a peer-reviewed scientific journal, such as Nature; rather, it is a forum where scientific theories and discoveries are explained to a wider audience. In the past scientists interested in fields outside their own areas of expertise made up the magazine's target audience. Now, however, the publication is aimed at educated general readers who are interested in scientific issues. The magazine American Scientist covers similar ground but at a level more suitable for the professional science audience, similar to the older style of Scientific American.

Publisher Apress
Author(s) Lara Rubbelke
ISBN 159059729X
Release Date 15 May 2007

While building on the skills you already have, Expert SQL Server 2005 Development will help you become an even better developer by focusing on best practices and demonstrating how to design high-performance, maintainable database applications.

This book starts by reintroducing the database as a integral part of the software development ecosystem. You’ll learn how to think about SQL Server development as you would any other software development. For example, there’s no reason you can’t architect and test database routines just as you would architect and test application code. And nothing should stop you from implementing the types of exception handling and security rules that are considered so important in other tiers, even if they are usually ignored in the database.

You’ll learn how to apply development methodologies like these to produce high-quality encryption and SQLCLR solutions. Furthermore, you’ll discover how to exploit a variety of tools that SQL Server offers in order to properly use dynamic SQL and to improve concurrency in your applications. Finally, you’ll become well versed in implementing spatial and temporal database designs, as well as approaching graph and hierarchy problems.

Learn Java From the Ground-Up—With Animated Illustrations that You Manipulate
This is the first effective Java book for true beginners. Sure, books before now focused on basic concepts and key techniques, and some even provided working examples on CD. Still, they lacked the power to transform someone with no programming experience into someone who sees, who really "gets it."

Working with Ground-Up Java, you will definitely get it. This is due to the clarity of Phil Heller's explanations, and the smoothly flowing organization of his instruction. He's one of the best Java trainers around.

But what's really revolutionary are his more than 30 animated illustrations, which you'll find on the enclosed CD. Each of these small programs, visual and interactive in nature, vividly demonstrates how its source code works. You can modify it in different ways, distinctly altering the behavior of the program. As you experiment with these tools—and you can play with them for hours—you'll gain both the skills and the fundamental understanding needed to complete each chapter's exercises, which steadily increase in sophistication. No other beginning Java book can take you so far, so quickly, and none will be half as much fun.

Transport is one of the major global consumers of energy and therefore has an important role in meeting the primary objective of the World Energy Council, sustainable energy for all. Transport is the only energy sector in which the energy itself is mobile during consumption, rather than being delivered for use at a fixed location. For this reason, energy for transport is dominated by petroleum, which is widely available, relatively inexpensive and from which easily transportable liquid fuels of high energy density such as gasoline and diesel are made.
The sustainability of petroleum and other fossil fuels within the timeframe of this study, to 2050, has been put into question by scientists, policymakers and other stakeholders. Sustainability is measured in terms of the 3 A’s criteria of accessibility, availability and acceptability, differentiating between the relative importance of different regions. Sustainability of fuels brings into question the sustainability of the associated vehicle technologies. In this study, existing and potential fuel and vehicle technologies are assessed both qualitatively (by the 3 A’s criteria) and quantitatively (by the contribution to reduced consumption) to determine a roadmap for technologies which can help meet the objective of sustainable energy. Other non-technical measures are also considered. The roadmap of technologies and measures is put into a practical context by considering the policies necessary to ensure that the objectives are met in the most efficient and effective way possible.

The book begins with an easy-to-read introduction to the concepts associated with the creation of optimization models for production planning. These concepts are then applied to well-known planning models, namely mrp and MRP II. From this foundation fairly sophisticated models for supply chain management are developed. Another unique feature is that models are developed with an eye toward implementation. In fact, there is a chapter that provides explicit examples of implementation of the basic models using a variety of popular, commercially available modeling languages. The new edition is updated and provides extensions.

Book author: Rakesh Kumar

Book Description:
Our limited understanding of cellular regulatory signal-transduction-networks has been a barrier to progress in improving the overall cure-rate of human cancers. Delineation of the physiologic roles of the specific regulatory signaling components, with known association with metastatic phenotypes, is a highly promising area which will likely provide the next generation of targeted strategies in the future of molecular cancer medicine. These signaling components are likely to be used in diagnosis, prognosis, and as novel targets for therapeutic development.
This book brings together up-to-date summaries by leading cancer researchers on the major principles of cancer cell biology: survival, apoptosis, adhesion, and cell cycle deregulation. It is directed at clinicians and scientists working in the areas of experimental and molecular therapeutics, molecular medicine, translational cancer research, and bio-medical sciences in general.

Publisher friends of ED
Author(s) Paul Haine
ISBN 1590597656
Release Date 18 December 2006

Why settle for average HTML, when you can become a master of it? Markup is the fabric that holds the web together, but most people only scratch the surface of what can be achieved using (X)HTML.

That’s where this unique book comes in—it’s aimed at web designers and developers who have already mastered the basics of HTML and web design, but want to take their markup further, making it leaner and more semantically rich, for a more efficient, more usable/accessible web site.

HTML Mastery does all that and more, showing all of the HTML tags available, including less commonly used ones, where and how to use them, and clever styling and scripting techniques that you can employ to take advantage of them on your web site. It is totally standards compliant, up to date with modern web design techniques. Forms and tables are looked in particular detail, as there is so much that can be done with them.

In addition, the book also looks at some of the advanced semantic tools that look to further improve the usability and semantic value of your sites—an entire chapter is devoted to Microformats, and a nod is given to XHTML 2.0 and Web Applications 1.0—web standards of the future.

Summary of Contents:

* Chapter 1: Getting Started

* Chapter 2: Using the Right Tag for the Right Job

* Chapter 3: Table Mastery

* Chapter 4: Form Mastery

* Chapter 5: Purpose-Built Semantics: Microformats and Other Stories

* Chapter 6: Recognizing Semantics

* Chapter 7: Looking Ahead: XHTML 2.0 and Web Applications 1.0

* Appendix A: XHTML As XML

* Appendix B: Frames, and How to Avoid Them

WiMAX Broadband Wireless Access Technology, based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, is at the origin of great promises for many different markets covering fixed wireless Internet Access, Backhauling and Mobile cellular networks. WiMAX technology is designed for the transmission of multimedia services (voice, Internet, email, games and others) at high data rates (of the order of Mb/s per user). It is a very powerful but sometimes complicated technique.
The WiMAX System is described in thousands of pages of IEEE 802.16 standard and amendments documents and WiMAX Forum documents. WiMAX: Technology for Broadband Wireless Access provides a global picture of WiMAX and a large number of details that makes access to WiMAX documents much easier. All the aspects of WIMAX are covered. Illustrations and clear explanations for all the main procedures of WiMAX are pedagogically presented in a succession of relatively short chapters
*Topics covered include WiMAX genesis and framework, WiMAX topologies, protocol layers, MAC layer, MAC frames, WiMAX multiple access, the physical layer, QoS Management, Radio Resource Management, Bandwidth allocation, Network Architecture, Mobility and Security
* Features a glossary of abbreviations and their definitions, and a wealth of explanatory tables and figures
* Highlights the most recent changes, including the 802.16e amendment of the standard, needed for Mobile WiMAX
* Includes technical comparisons of WiMAX vs. 802.11 (WiFi) and cellular 3G technologies
This technical introduction to WiMAX, explaining the rather complex standards (IEEE 802.16-2004 and 802.16e) is a must read for engineers, decision-makers and students interested in WiMAX, as well as other researchers and scientists from this evolving field.

To be competitive, service providers cannot customize every installation but must simultaneously offer services that meet a wide range of perceived customer needs. This guide shows commercial service providers and equipment vendors how to build competitive service offerings for enterprise-specific needs.

In general, the book is organized into three main parts. Chapters 1 through 5 deal with defining  customer  requirements  and  the  abstract  provider  architecture.  Chapters  6  through 8 deal with building and extending carrier facilities and transmission systems. Chapters 9 through 13 deal with the intelligent communications systems overlaid onto the physical structures, which to varying extents involve Internet Protocol (IP)–based control planes, and possibly IP forwarding.

This book focuses on the service provider network, and ideally will be read in concern with the  more  customer-oriented  WAN  Survival  Guide. It  is  not  aimed  at  protocol  implementers, although it does present alternatives between techniques in development. If a reader finishes the book and is disappointed that he or she did not become utterly familiar with bit-level techniques, I have succeeded in my goals! There are many excellent sources  for  dealing  with  protocol  mechanics,  but  a  shortage  of  sources  for  pinning down problems and selecting solutions.

TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - What Is the Problem to Be Solved?
Chapter 02 - The Service Provider Landscape
Chapter 03 - Services, Service Level Agreements, and Delivering Service
Chapter 04 - Translating Service Definitions to Technical Requirements

This book will show you how to think about similarities in your application logic and how to design and create objects that maximize the benefit and power of .NET. Packed with examples that will guide you through every step, Object-Oriented Programming with Visual Basic .NET is for those with some programming experience.

This book is not a reference. That needs to be said right off the bat. It was written to be read cover to cover; it tells a story. It's an interwoven tale about object-oriented programming in the .NET world: building objects, moving them, and using them around the world. This is not just a how-to book; it's a why-to and a when-to book as well.

At times, this book is ideal for beginners. At other times, it is for intermediate programmers. And sometimes, it is for advanced coders. Regardless of your skills, this book assumes three things: the .NET Framework is installed on a machine and under your control, you have access to a web server, and, when you get curious, you know how to look up whatever interests you in the documentation. .NET is massive. However, I wasn't able to cover every subject; I wanted the book to be manageable for the readers, fun, and informative.

TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - Introduction

Leading Programmers Explain How They Think

How do the experts solve difficult problems in software development? In this unique and insightful book, leading computer scientists offer case studies that reveal how they found unusual, carefully designed solutions to high-profile projects. You will be able to look over the shoulder of major coding and design experts to see problems through their eyes.

This is not simply another design patterns book, or another software engineering treatise on the right and wrong way to do things. The authors think aloud as they work through their project's architecture, the tradeoffs made in its construction, and when it was important to break rules. Beautiful Code is an opportunity for master coders to tell their story. All author royalties will be donated to Amnesty International.

Software Requirement Patterns (Best Practices)

Learn proven, real-world techniques for specifying software requirements with this practical reference. It details 30 requirement "patterns" offering realistic examples for situation-specific guidance for building effective software requirements. Each pattern explains what a requirement needs to convey, offers potential questions to ask, points out potential pitfalls, suggests extra requirements, and other advice. This book also provides guidance on how to write other kinds of information that belong in a requirements specification, such as assumptions, a glossary, and document history and references, and how to structure a requirements specification.

A disturbing proportion of computer systems are judged to be inadequate; many are not even delivered; more are late or over budget. Studies consistently show one of the single biggest causes is poorly defined requirements: not properly defining what a system is for and what it's supposed to do. Even a modest contribution to improving requirements offers the prospect of saving businesses part of a large sum of wasted investment. This guide emphasizes this important requirement need–determining what a software system needs to do before spending time on development. Expertly written, this book details solutions that have worked in the past, with guidance for modifying patterns to fit individual needs–giving developers the valuable advice they need for building effective software requirements.

This book will be useful for those administrators who currently work with Windows 2000 domains and for those who are planning to deploy Active Directory on Windows .NET servers. For an administrator, the new version of Active Directory does not have any new principle features, and all options that are only available on Windows .NET servers are specifically described in the book. Therefore, an administrator can deal with any version of Active Directory domains and compare the working environment's features with those that were on the old platform.

One probably would not even consider repairing a defective car or a complex electronic device without special additional tools and facilities. Nonetheless, administrators who work with Active Directory often forget that the problems which come up in the process of working with Active Directory are also impossible to eliminate without the help of the appropriate tools and utilities. Most of the tools that you need for working with Active Directory (and that are looked at in this book) are furnished along with the system, and are found in the Windows Support Tools pack. This book is dedicated, to a large extent, to working with exactly these tools. A few tools and scripts from the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit are also considered, since they work properly in the Windows .NET environment.

Besides, the author would like to turn administrators' attention to methods of program access to Active Directory, and in part to scripts that use the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI). Scripts can be used to solve many administrative tasks, and you may use already written scripts after a minimal number of modifications to fit your needs. Creating scripts does not require you to be a highly qualified programmer — a fact which the author tried to get across in the last two chapters of the book.

This book is geared towards a relatively prepared reader, one who has already had some experience working with Windows 2000, and is familiar with the basic work methods and components of the system (e.g., with Microsoft Management Console snap-ins). However, information on these questions can easily be found in the Help system.

Book Information and Description:

Expert One on One Access Application Development
What is this book about?

If you are developing databases for your own use, the process need not be complicated. But when you build databases for clients, many of whom may not be familiar with Access or comfortable with databases in general, you have a lot more work to do. Expert One-on-One Microsoft Access Application Development makes that process easier.

In these pages, you discover how to set up tables and relationships to ensure that the database is properly normalized. Then you write VBA code to create the connective tissue that turns a bunch of tables, queries, forms, and reports into a complete and coherent application. You also find out about the important but often inadequately documented area of Automation code, which is used to communicate with other Office applications.

Over years of working with Access, the author has created some add-ins to save time when developing applications. She shows you how to use them to create a main menu for an application, automatically apply a naming convention to database objects, and ensure a consistent and professional appearance of the application’s forms.

This book helps you write VBA code that unites database components into an application that works.

What does this book cover?

Here's what you'll discover in this book:

* How to build integrated Access-based applications that support multiple clients and databases

* Tips for streamlining application creation

* Maintenance required throughout an application’s life cycle, including migrating data from legacy systems and upgrading Office

* How to use Automation code to exchange data among Office components and even some non-Office programs

* Ways to avoid glitches when building Access applications that work with Excel, Word, and Outlook

Who is this book for?

This book is for experienced Access users who are familiar with creating Access objects and writing VBA code, but who need help transitioning from competent users/programmers to full-fledged Access developers.

Book Description
Extreme Programming Refactored: The Case Against XP is meant to provide an independent look at Extreme Programming. It is meant to cut through the marketing hype of Extreme Programming and expose a number of weaknesses with this approach to software development. It tries to draw a distinction between true "agility" in a software process and "fragility" inherent in techniques such as oral documentation. Extreme Programming (XP) is a consummate mix of good goals, some good advice, and lots of bad advice. The goals and the good advice draw people in; the bad advice can potentially cause projects to fail. The XPers' theory is that when applied together, this mixture of rules will somehow magically be safe. XP therefore represents a high-risk process, wrapped in a "feel-good" methodology. The marketing, hype, and earnest self-assurance of its authors will convince many project leaders to try out XP on their next project. In Extreme Programming Refactored: The Case Against XP into a more viable process, Rosenberg and Stephens are not attempting to define a new methodology, as there are plenty of those in the World already. Instead, they will be examining XP in the context of existing methodologies and processes such as RUP, ICONIX, Spiral, RAD, DSDM, etc - and showing how XP goals can be achieved using these existing processes (with a slight emphasis on RUP and ICONIX), using software wisdom that has been tried and proven to work again and again.

Download Description
"Any one [XP] practice doesn’t stand well on its own (with the possible exception of testing). They require the other practices to keep them in balance.” – Kent Beck, Extreme Programming Explained, (Chapter 11)

“Well, from my experience, most teams that say they're doing XP don't actually do the practices.

“Houston, we have a problem.” – Jim Lovell, Apollo 13

Extreme Programming Refactored: The Case Against XP (featuring Songs of the Extremos) takes a satirical look at the increasingly hyped Extreme Programming methodology. It explores some quite astonishing Extremo quotes that have typified the XP approach— quotes such as, “XPers are not afraid of oral documentation,” “Schedule is the customer’s problem,” “Dependencies between requirements are more a matter of fear than reality” and “Concentration is the Enemy.”

In between the chuckles, though, there is a serious analysis of XP’s many flaws. The authors also examine C3, the first XP project, whose team (most of whom went on to get XP book deals shortly before C3’s cancellation) described themselves as "the best team on the face of the Earth". (In a later chapter, the authors also note that one problem which can affect pair programmers is overconfidence— or is that "eXcessive courage"?). The authors examine whether the problems that led to C3’s “inexplicable” cancellation could also afflict present-day XP projects.

In the final chapter (Refactoring XP) Matt and Doug suggest some ways of achieving the agile goals of XP using some XP practices (used in moderation) combined with other, less risk-laden methods." -->

Fighting Spam for Dummies

# Paperback: 236 pages
# Publisher: For Dummies (January 30, 2004)
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 0764559656
# ISBN-13: 978-0764559655
# Product Dimensions: 8.4 x 5.5 x 0.8 inches

Unsolicited commercial email--spam--has become the most frequent complaint among users of the Internet. Its blaring subject lines and gaudy content--repetitive at best and frequently offensive--have made it much harder to make productive use of computers. Fighting Spam for Dummies presents some techniques for keeping your email address off spammers' mailing lists and, when that fails, keeping junk mail out of your primary inbox with filters and other utilities. As a last resort, the book (which, oddly, has three co-authors of its 200 small pages) shows you how to adjust your email program so it doesn't automatically show pictures and is less likely to spread viruses.

There's a fair bit of interesting material in this book, a lot of which has to do with the tricks spammers use to conceal their identities. You'll find detailed instructions on how to convert the header lines of a garbage message--complete with obfuscated URLs and fake IP addresses--into the real origin of the message. Of course, there's not much more to do once you've figured out that the message originated in Taiwan or Russia, but that's not the fault of the authors. Elsewhere in this slender handbook, you'll find click-by-click instructions for erecting filters and making other worthwhile configuration changes in Eudora, Netscape and Mozilla Mail, several versions of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and several Webmail sites. --David Wall

Topics covered: Where spam comes from and what you can do about it. Instructions for configuring email clients focus on software for Microsoft Windows.

Reviews
Synopsis
Learn Java from the "Ground-Up" with animated illustrations that you manipulate. This is the first effective Java book for true beginners. Sure, books before now focused on basic concepts and key techniques, and some even provided working examples on CD. Still, they lacked the power to transform someone with no programming experience into someone who sees, who really "gets it." Working with "Ground-Up Java", you will definitely get it. As you experiment with these tools and you can play with them for hours you'll gain both the skills and the fundamental understanding needed to complete each chapter's exercises, which steadily increase in sophistication. No other beginning Java book can take you so far, so quickly, and none will be half as much fun. Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Step by Step--Version 2003

* Language: English
* ISBN-10: 0735619050
* ISBN-13: 978-0735619050
* Product Dimensions: 8.9 x 7.4 x 1.8 inches

Editorial Reviews

For the several million developers using "traditional" Visual Basic 6, Microsoft Visual Basic .NET Step by Step will put the new VB .NET within reach with a very approachable tour of the new version's features used to build traditional client-side software. If you've been put off by the newfangled books on .NET that spin the new VB as Internet-focused and unrelated to your existing expertise, this title shows you how to leverage your knowledge to get going with Microsoft's newest platform.

The salient feature of this text is the author's patient presentation style, which stresses "traditional" VB programming. (While VB 6 did technically support Web programming, the unarguable reality is that most developers have built form-based programs for years.) This volume shows you how to use the same techniques for the new VB .NET. The author begins his presentation here with a clever slot-machine application to get you started. Other early sections cover the basics of VB .NET from a language perspective, including basics like variables, data types, and flow control statements. This handsomely printed volume makes use of two-toned color (in blue) to highlight differences between VB 6 in VB .NET, making it an invaluable resource for programmers making this transition.

Other essential technologies get their due here as well, from basic control programming with Windows Forms, integrating with ActiveX controls, to a very approachable guide to the new ADO.NET APIs for databases. Coverage of how to bind data to a variety of controls, plus using the new VB .NET DataGrid control, will show you how to do all you did in VB 6 in the new .NET. Instead of getting bogged down in details, the author does a good job of presenting what working programmers need to know. Later chapters delve into .NET APIs for working with files, strings, and collections. This title doesn't pretend to cover ASP.NET in any detail, though there is a useful introduction to the subject, as well as how to use the Microsoft Internet Explorer Object to build VB applications that display HTML and other Internet content.

The reality is that most VB 6 programmers will have to learn a lot when it comes to .NET. Before launching into a whole new paradigm of Web development, this book shows that today's VB has a lot to do with the older VB 6 standard. This text will be nearly indispensable for any VB 6 programmers making the leap to .NET. It even suggests that rumors of the death of the traditional client-side VB application may be somewhat exaggerated. This title shows you that the new easier deployment and productivity features of VB .NET may extend the life of such applications in one of the best-available tutorials for learning VB .NET, bar none. --Richard Dragan --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

, atr:,, title:Encyclopedia of Modern US Weapons

When going over an encyclopedia, one of the main features you expect to have, next to each informative description of the weapon system is a visual overview, either in a drawn format or with a picture colour or black and white, and this is where this book is lacking. Though the book describes several weapons systems, it fails to deliver as there is too little in the way of visuals. Personally, I would steer those interested in modern military hardware into the direction of the Jane's Military books as they boffer what this book lacks.
