In this book you learn everything you need to know about developing C# applications that access databases. If you are wondering why this is such an important topic, just consider how many applications use the functionality. At first glance, you might notice a few specialized ones such as Windows applications to view and edit human resources data or Web applications that display recent sport results. Look a bit deeper, however, and you quickly find that the vast majority of applications use database data in one form or another, even if it isn’t immediately obvious.
This book is the perfect starting point to learn about databases, and particularly about using MS SQL Server from .NET 2.0 applications written in C#. Over the course of the book, you learn the fundamentals of database technology, how the .NET Framework can be used to access databases, and how to get the most out of your code. Along the way you are presented with numerous helpful, easy-to-follow examples that demonstrate the techniques you need. Each example increases your understanding of a particular subject, and often provides you with tips and tricks that you can adapt to different contexts in the future. Each chapter also includes exercises to reinforce key concepts, the answers to which are found at the back of the book.
The main idea behind the book is to present you with a solid understanding of the basics of database access in C#. You’ll also be exposed to many possibilities for future development. You will often learn about quite complicated techniques, but they are broken into simple steps and carefully explained. These explanations provide an appreciation for what is possible, and prepare you for handling additional resources about these subjects when you’ve finished the book. And you’ll be able to do that without facing instant despair at attempting to learn about a completely new subject because you’ll already know the basics of what you are doing.
This book is aimed at people who already have at least a basic understanding of .NET development with C# and who want to learn about databases and database access. The C# code used in the examples in this book is described in detail only in cases where it is quite advanced, or where it’s an area you might not have looked at before. However, no experience with databases is assumed, so the database code you write (using ADO.NET) is explained from first principles. Databases themselves are explained, as well as the SQL language used to access them. This book is perfect for you if the word “database” is one that you’ve heard only in passing.

The book deals with the art of error correcting coding, in the sense that it addresses the need for selecting, implementing and simulating algorithms for encoding and decoding of codes for error correction and detection. New features of the second edition include additional in-text examples as well as new problems at the end of each chapter, intended for use in a course on ECC. A comprehensive bibliography is included, for readers who wish to learn more about the beautiful theory that makes it all work.
One of the best features of the book is that it provides a natural introduction to the principles and decoding techniques of turbo codes, LDPC codes, and product codes, from an algebraic channel coding perspective. In this context, turbo codes are viewed as punctured product codes. With simple examples, the underlying ideas and structures used in the construction and iterative decoding of product codes are presented in an unparalleled manner.
The detailed treatment of various algebraic decoding techniques for the correction of errors and erasures using Reed–Solomon codes is also worth a mention. On the applications of ECC in combined channel coding and digital modulation, or coded modulation, the author does a good job in introducing the basic principles that are used in the construction of several important classes of coded modulation systems.

This book, as the title suggests, is all about database administration. But what is database administration? Database administrators are more and more often being called upon to perform duties that are not strictly “administrative” in nature. Along with typical administrative duties such as backups, database maintenance, and user management, database administrators are increasingly being asked to perform tasks such as building complex data transformations for data import, building distributed data solutions, and, with the release of SQL Server 2005, maintaining the security and integrity of the database while enabling the integration of managed code into the database engine.
This book lays the foundation by covering in detail the most common database administrative tasks. It also introduces you to many of the more advanced areas that enterprise database administrators need to be familiar with. Read these pages carefully, and apply what you learn. From here, move on to more complex jobs and tasks. The opportunities for talented and hard-working database administrators are virtually unlimited.
Our primary audience is IT professionals (both developers and administrators) who have found themselves responsible for the management and maintenance of a SQL Server 2005 database. You may have been responsible for a SQL Server 2000 database and were just getting used to that when your company decided to move to SQL Server 2005. The new features and new tool set can be intimidating.

Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), German painter, engraver, and draftsman, was the most celebrated artist of the Northern Renaissance. His reputation spread throughout Europe during his lifetime, beyond his native city of Nuremberg, a thriving center of art and commerce. Like Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer became deeply involved in scientific and mathematical studies. Dürer’s application of scientific principles to the creation of art, especially as recorded in his Underweysung der Messung (Instruction in measurement), marks the beginning of art theory in Northern Europe. This Octavo Edition presents a sammelband (or volume in which multiple works are bound together) of the first two books of Dürer’s Von menschlicher Proportion (Four books of human proportions) in the Latin translation of 1532 (De Symmetria), along with the revised and expanded 1538 second edition of Underweysung der Messung. Other copies of this assemblage are recorded.

This book looks at the transformation that Art and Art history is undergoing through engagement with the digital revolution. Since its initiation in 1985, CHArt (Computers and the History of Art) has set out to promote interaction between the rapidly developing new Information Technology and the study and practice of Art. It has become increasingly clear in recent years that this interaction has led, not just to the provision of new tools for the carrying out of existing practices, but to the evolution of unprecedented activities and modes of thought.
This collection of papers represents the variety, innovation and richness of significant presentations made at the CHArt Conferences of 2001 and 2002. Some show new methods of teaching being employed, making clear in particular the huge advantages that IT can provide for engaging students in learning and interactive discussion. It also shows how much is to be gained from the flexibility of the digital image – or could be gained if the road block of copyright is finally overcome. Others look at the impact on collections and archives, showing exciting ways of using computers to make available information about collections and archives and to provide new accessibility to archives. The way such material can now be accessed via the internet has revolutionized the search methods of scholars, but it has also made information available to all. However the internet is not only about access. Some papers here show how it also offers the opportunity of exploring the structure of images and dealing with the fascinating possibilities offered by digitisation for visual analysis, searching and reconstruction. Another challenging aspect covered here are the possibilities offered by digital media for new art forms. One point that emerges is that digital art is not some discreet practice, separated from other art forms. It is rather an approach that can involve all manner of association with both other art practices and with other forms of presentation and enquiry, demonstrating that we are witnessing a revolution that affects all our activities and not one that simply leads to the establishment of a new discipline to set alongside others.

A UWB system is defined as any radio system that has a 10-dB bandwidth larger than 20 % of its center frequency, or has a 10-dB bandwidth equal to or larger than 500 MHz. The recent approval of UWB technology by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the United States reserves the unlicensed frequency band between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz (7.5 GHz) for indoor UWB wireless communication systems. It is expected that many conventional principles and approaches used for short-range wireless communications will be reevaluated and a new industrial sector in short-range (e.g., 10 m) wireless communications with high data rate (e.g., 400 Mbps) will be formed. Further, industrial standards IEEE 802.15.3a (high data rate) and IEEE 802.15.4a (very low data rate) based on UWB technology have been introduced.
UWB technology has many benefits owing to its ultra-wideband nature, which include high data rate, less path loss and better immunity to multipath propagation, availability of low-cost transceivers, low transmit power and low interference, and so on. On the other hand, there exist many technical challenges in UWB deployment, such as the received-waveform distortion from each distinct delayed propagation path, antenna design for and synchronization of very short pulses, performance degradation due to multiple access interference and narrowband jamming, employment of higher order modulation schemes to improve capacity or throughput, and development of link and network layers to take advantage of the UWB transmission benefits at the physical layer.
Even though R&D results so far have demonstrated that UWB radio is a promising solution for high-rate short-range wireless communications, further extensive investigation, experiments, and development are necessary for developing effective and efficient UWB communication systems and UWB technology. This book is timely in reporting the results from cutting edge research and state-of-the-art technology in UWB wireless communications.

Tired of getting swamped in the nitty-gritty of cross-browser, Web 2.0-grade JavaScript? Get back in the game with Prototype and script.aculo.us, two extremely popular JavaScript libraries, that make it a walk in the park. Be it AJAX, drag and drop, auto-completion, advanced visual effects, or many other great features, all you need is write one or two lines of script that look so good they could almost pass for Ruby code!
Web applications are getting richer and richer, with more interaction baked in every day. But JavaScript, DOM, CSS and a full host of other Web standards are quite complex, and the result isn't always browser compliant.
The Prototype and script.aculo.us libraries are veritable treasure troves, smoothing over all the usual nitty-gritty differences between browsers, and making most common features a breeze to implement. With this book, you can quickly wield the whole power of these extraordinary libraries.
Dive into Prototype, the library that makes JavaScript so much more powerful, and it looks a lot like Ruby code. Exploring the DOM, handling events, taming AJAX, and radically simplifying most of your scripting code: it all becomes easy-and very portable-with Prototype.
When it comes to advanced UI features, script.aculo.us is every web developer's dream come true: whether you need to create auto-completed text inputs, implement in-place editors, provide customized drag-and-drop behaviors, capture your users' attention with visual effects or simply build DOM fragments more efficiently, it's all there, and lightweight too.

While building on the skills you already have, Expert SQL Server 2005
Development will help you become an even better developer by focusing on
best practices and demonstrating how to design high-performance,
maintainable database applications. This book starts by reintroducing
the database as a integral part of the software development ecosystem.
You'll learn how to think about SQL Server development as you would any
other software development. For example, there's no reason you can't
architect and test database routines just as you would architect and
test application code. And nothing should stop you from implementing the
types of exception handling and security rules that are considered so
important in other tiers, even if they are usually ignored in the
database. You'll learn how to apply development methodologies like these
to produce high-quality encryption and SQLCLR solutions. Furthermore,
you'll discover how to exploit a variety of tools that SQL Server offers
in order to properly use dynamic SQL and to improve concurrency in your
applications. Finally, you'll become well versed in implementing spatial
and temporal database designs, as well as approaching graph and
hierarchy problems.

Many young programmers are interested in game programming. Learn VB .NET Through Game Programming is a self-paced learning tutorial designed to help any developer master the basics of object-oriented programming (OOP) with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET. Unlike other books on OOP, this easy-to-understand book provides readers with peer-level language, while illustrating concepts with definitive and intuitive game programming examples.
The goal of this book is to teach you how to get started programming in Visual Basic .NET by developing games. This book doesn’t intend to be a complete treatise of all the features and capabilities of this latest version of VB. Instead, it provides a series of example programs that illustrate basic features of the language and begins the huge task of introducing you to the contents of the .NET Framework. In addition, I introduce one more important programming concept—the concept of design. Now that object-oriented languages are more common, people have found that the various objects in a program can be designed to interact with each other in different ways; these interactions can make the program more or less complex or more or less adaptable to future features or enhancements.
To illustrate the importance of design on a program, I’ve taken the time to walk you through the development process of several of these programs rather than simply presenting you with the final version of the game. By learning how to solve a program one way, then improving upon that design in a second or third version of the program, you’ll begin to recognize when your own designs might be headed down a wrong path and some redesign is in order.
This book assumes you’ve had at least some experience in software development before diving into the first chapter and that you now want to learn Visual Basic .NET. Perhaps you’re a VB 6 programmer, for example, in which case this book will help describe the syntactical differences between the languages, as well as introduce you to the .NET Framework classes that will be new to you. Perhaps you’re experienced in an older technology such as mainframe programming and are looking to update your skill set to something more modern. Whatever the case, my assumption is that as you crack open Chapter 1, “Developing Your First Game,” you’ve written programs in some other language so that you have a jumping-off point.

Chapter 01 - Developing Your First Game
Chapter 02 - Writing Your First Game, Again
Chapter 03 - Understanding Object-Oriented Programming from the Start
Chapter 04 - More OOPing Around

Health foods and dietary supplements are widely used throughout the world - it is estimated that more than seventy million people in Europe regularly buy these products, and it is a billion dollar business in the USA. Health foods include vitamins, minerals, cereals, nuts, herbal medicines, functional foods, and many others. A large number of people use these foods in the belief that they contribute to their general health, while, in most countries, little or no information is given on products explaining their therapeutic values. The Oxford Book of Health Foods begins with an account of modern concepts of human nutrition, followed by a series of over one hundred accounts of individual health foods and dietary supplements. In all cases the importance of these products in human health is explained, and, for herbal medicines, the evidence for their claimed therapeutic value is given, and toxic effects are described. Full-colour illustrations accompany these accounts. The Oxford Book of Health Foods will be of interest not just to health professionals, but to all people with an interest in health foods and healthy eating. The text is supplemented by a glossary, explaining the more technical terms, and a bibliography listing sources for further reading.

The definition of an owl had always pleased him: a night bird of prey...sharp talons and soft plumage which permits noiseless flight...applied figuratively to a person of nocturnal habits. 'I am The Owl', he would whisper to himself after he had selected his prey, 'and nighttime is my time.'"
Jean Sheridan, a college dean and prominent historian, sets out to her hometown to attend the twenty-year reunion of Stonecroft Academy alumni, where she is to be honored along with six other members of her class. There is something uneasy in the air: one woman in the group about to be feted, Alison Kendall, a beautiful, high-powered Hollywood agent, drowned in her pool during an early-morning swim. Alison is the fifth woman in the class whose life has come to a sudden, mysterious end.

Entity-relationship (E-R) diagrams are time-tested models for database development well-known for their usefulness in mapping out clear database designs. Also commonly known is how difficult it is to master them. With this comprehensive guide, database designers and developers can quickly learn all the ins and outs of E-R diagramming to become expert database designers. Because E-R diagrams are so fundamental to database design, this book is also an indispensable text for teaching computer science students the basics of database development. Database Design Using Entity-Relationship Diagrams clarifies E-R diagramming by defining it in terms of requirements (end user requests) and specifications (designer feedback to those requests).
The book explains how open communication between designers and end users is critical to developing usable, easy-to-understand E-R diagrams that model both requirements and specifications. The authors explain, in an intuitive, informal manner, how to develop an E-R diagram, how to map it to a database, and how the resulting database can be tested. This definitive guide is a basic component for any database course, and is also an invaluable reference that database professionals can use throughout their careers.
This book is intended to be used by database practitioners and students for data modeling. It is also intended to be used as a supplemental text in database courses, systems analysis and design courses, and other courses that design and implement databases. Many present-day database and systems analysis and design books limit their coverage of data modeling. This book not only increases the exposure to data modeling concepts, but also presents a detailed, step-by-step approach to designing an ER diagram and developing the relational database from it.

Handbook of Medicinal Herbs
CRC PRESS
James A. Duke with Mary Jo Bogenschutz-Godwin,
Judi duCellier & Peggy-Ann K. Duke
Previously published: CRC handbook of medicinal herbs.
Includes bibliographical references and index.
ISBN 0-8493-1284-1 (alk. paper)
870 pages {pdf}

By the time this second edition is published, the first edition of the Handbook of Medicinal Herbs will have been out more than 15 years.
The second edition is designed to present most of the old information plus new information on the more important of those original 365 herbs.
I submitted the first edition under the original unpublished title, Herbs of Dubious Salubrity.
I intentionally left out many of the completely safe culinary herbs, spices, and food plants that are clearly medicinal.
I also intentionally omitted some strictly dangerous herbs, such as foxglove, that were too unhealthy for use in unskilled hands.
I did include several obscure hallucinogenic plants of dubious salubrity.
I did, or should have, dropped some of these because they have little medicinal importance.
Some poorly documented species, such as Mimosa hostilis and Phoradendron leucarpum , for example, were retained with fragmentary entries, so as to at least mention species from the first edition that might better have been dropped.
Now I think I have the most important herbs well covered here.
In edition two, which I will refer to frequently as my Herbal Desk Reference (HDR), I have tried to concisely corral the data on some 1000 herbs in as little space as possible, striving to make a reliable, referenced resource to parallel the PDR for Herbal Medicines.
I use the three-letter abbreviation, HDR, to indicate the second edition of my Handbook of Medicinal Herbs, because I compare and contrast it to other important sources, which are also represented by three-letter
abbreviations. (See the reference abbreviation appendix.)
With this edition, I have tried to cover most of the widely mentioned medicinal plants, whether they are extremely salubrious or extremely toxic.
Without counting them, I estimate we include more than 1000 of the most important herbs, including the more important herbs from the young Native American and the European traditions (including most of those approved by Commission E (KOM), and almost all of those included in the PDR for Herbal Medicine (PHR for the first edition, and PH2 for the second edition).
Unlike Commission E and the Herbal PDR, which seem to stress European and American traditions, I include proportionately more herbs from the older African, Ayurvedic, and Chinese traditions as well, not wanting to slight any major medicinal plant from any major tradition.
(The index permits you to locate an herb by its common name)

QBase Anaesthesia 3 is the third volume in the QBase series of book + CD-ROM packages and is aimed at the FRCA (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists) candidate. Both the book and CD contain 555 questions divided into a number of pre-set exams (with accompanying fully referenced explanatory notes) and there are also a number of pre-set short exams to attempt, utilising the questions in the book. The CD-ROM can be installed in seconds and gives the reader an incredible range of options, greatly increasing the utility and value of the book. Not only can the reader practice the set exams, but the program will mark these exams, allow the reader to customize exams to focus in on areas requiring further revision, shuffle the stems (A-E) to prevent the candidate from memorising 'patterns' and advise on examination strategy. It also has the facility to print out and store test results and provide helpful notes on each question. The CD-ROM accompanying this volume has been improved so that the exam analysis now gives a subject-based as well as an overall analysis. On installation, the CD-ROM will automatically update the version of the Qbase program released with QBase Anaesthesia 1 or 2.

Modern Banking focuses on the theory and practice of banking, and its prospects in the new millennium. The book is written for courses in banking and finance at Masters/MBA level, or undergraduate degrees specialising in this area. Bank practitioners wishing to deepen and broaden their understanding of banking issues may also be attracted to this book. While they often have exceptional and detailed knowledge of the areas they have worked in, busy bankers may be all too unaware of the key broader issues. Consider the fundamental questions: What is unique about a bank? and What differentiates it from other financial institutions? Answering these questions begins to show how banks should evolve and adapt - or fail. If bankers know the underlying reasons for why profitable banks exist, it will help them to devise strategies for sustained growth.
Modern Banking concludes with a set of case studies that give practical insight into the key issues covered in the book:

This book starts right from the basics with databases and SQL. Prior database or SQL knowledge is not necessary, as this book covers everything from database design to creating your first database and understanding how the SQL language is used with databases.
If you have some previous experience with databases and SQL, then you’ll have a head start and you may want to just skim Chapter 1. You’ll need to follow its instructions for creating the book’s example database, as this is used for all the examples throughout the book.
This book will look at Structured Query Language, or SQL as it’s usually abbreviated. SQL works with a database to create the database and to insert and extract data. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the theory and concepts behind database systems. Hence, this book also covers database theory and database design, so that you’re equipped to create an effective database.
The SQL code in this book reflects the modern SQL standards set by organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Standards Organization (ISO). However, while standards are great, what’s available for practical use is what really counts. This book, then, concentrates on the sort of SQL supported by most modern database systems. You should that find most of the code runs with little or no modification on most database systems released within the last six or seven years.

Learning insights from Wall Street’s best portfolio managers is incredibly smart for any investor, and R.J. Shook provides an excellent conduit through The Winner’s Circle. It makes perfect sense to see what the great investors have done. In every other field of endeavor, from the arts to medicine to sports, people turn to the best practitioners to learn how they succeeded.
The irony is that when it comes to investments, university classes teach
the theory of investing—that markets are efficient and you can’t beat
them. This is the equivalent of saying that there are rules of literature, and if you don’t follow them, you can’t write a great novel. The managers profiled in this book have long-term track records—many of them through
multiple bear and bull markets—that have stood the test of time.
R.J. Shook is essentially providing readers a unique opportunity to
spend a day with 14 outstanding portfolio managers and learn how they
think and how they process information to make their investment decisions.
Discovering how these managers invest, the mistakes they have made
and since learned from, how they think, and what they have studied over
time is extremely relevant to individual investors.
Of course, individual investors have more freedom than the typical
money manager. The professionals have to worry about their quarterly
performances, whether their track record will fall off and hurt their rankings, and so on. But individuals can emulate these professional money managers—even by picking and choosing investing styles and ideas—and Shook has selected the crème de la crème from which to choose.

The C# programming language is a powerful, relatively new descendant of the earlier C, C++, and Java languages. Programming with it is a lot of fun, as you’re about to find out in this book.
The goal of this book is to explain C# to you, but to write actual programs you need a specific coding environment. We’re betting that most readers will be using Microsoft Visual Studio, although we do provide alternatives. In basing the book on Visual Studio, we’ve tried to keep the Visual Studio portions to a reasonable minimum. we could just tell you, “Run your program any way you want,” but instead we may say, “Execute your C# program from Visual Studio by pressing F5.” We want you to be able to focus on the C# language and not on the mechanics of getting simple things to work.
We’ve made this book as easy to use as possible. Figuring out a new language is hard enough. Why make it any more complicated than it needs to be? The book is divided into six parts. Part I introduces you to C# programming with Visual Studio. This part guides you step by step in the creation of two different types of programs. We strongly encourage you to start here and read these two chapters in order before branching out into the other parts of the book. Even if you’ve programmed before, the basic program framework created in Part I is reused throughout the book.

In 2002 voice over IP will constitute more than 25% of all long distance voice calls, according to Network World. That’s more than a 30% ramp-up from 2001. The emergence of SIP, MPLS and new quality of service tools is making carrier grade voice over IP a service reality, and a potentially huge margin booster and revenue driver for service providers. The first edition of Carrier Grade Voice over IP played a roll in VoIP growth, in less than year becoming an essential tool for carriers working to provide high quality IP telephony. This new edition vastly updates the SIP chapter, details MPLS, and takes the explanations of the previous edition a step further in a final chapter that shows, step by step, how to design working VoIP networks.

In the more than fifteen years since its publication, the classic The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has become an international phenomenon with over fifteen million copies sold. Tens of millions of people in business, government, schools, and families, and, most important, as individuals have dramatically improved their lives and organizations by applying the principles of Stephen R. Covey's classic book. The world, though, is a vastly changed place. The challenges and complexity we all face in our relationships, families, professional lives, and communities are of an entirely new order of magnitude. Being effective as individuals and organizations is no longer merely an option -- survival in today's world requires it. But in order to thrive, innovate, excel, and lead in what Covey calls the new Knowledge Worker Age, we must build on and move beyond effectiveness. The call of this new era in human history is for greatness; it's for fulfillment, passionate execution, and significant contribution.
Accessing the higher levels of human genius and motivation in today's new reality requires a sea change in thinking: a new mind-set, a new skill-set, a new tool-set -- in short, a whole new habit. The crucial challenge of our world today is this: to find our voice and inspire others to find theirs. It is what Covey calls the 8th Habit.
So many people feel frustrated, discouraged, unappreciated, and undervalued -- with little or no sense of voice or unique contribution. The 8th Habit is the answer to the soul's yearning for greatness, the organization's imperative for significance and superior results, and humanity's search for its "voice." Profound, compelling, and stunningly timely, this groundbreaking new book of next-level thinking gives a clear way to finally tap the limitless value-creation promise of the Knowledge Worker Age.
Covey's new book will transform the way we think about ourselves and our purpose in life, about our organizations, and about humankind. Just as The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People helped us focus on effectiveness, The 8th Habit shows us the way to greatness.

The great strides made over the last decade in the complexity and network functionality of embedded systems have significantly enhanced their attractiveness for use in critical applications such as medical devices and military communications. However, this expansion into critical areas has presented embedded engineers with a serious new problem: their designs are now being targeted by the same malicious attackers whose predations have plagued traditional systems for years. Rising concerns about data security in embedded devices are leading engineers to pay more attention to security assurance in their designs than ever before. This is particularly challenging due to embedded devices inherent resource constraints such as limited power and memory.
Therefore, traditional security solutions must be customized to fit their profile, and entirely new security concepts must be explored. However, there are few resources available to help engineers understand how to implement security measures within the unique embedded context. This new book from embedded security expert Timothy Stapko is the first to provide engineers with a comprehensive guide to this pivotal topic. From a brief review of basic security concepts, through clear explanations of complex issues such as choosing the best cryptographic algorithms for embedded utilization, the reader is provided with all the information needed to successfully produce safe, secure embedded devices.
The ONLY book dedicated to a comprehensive coverage of embedded security!
Covers both hardware and software-based embedded security solutions for preventing and dealing with attacks
Application case studies support practical explanations of all key topics, including network protocols, wireless and cellular communications, languages (Java and C/++), compilers, web-based interfaces, cryptography, and an entire section on SSL

David Baldacci has taken a new approach to murder in HOUR GAME. The killer he has created is no run-of-the-mill killer. Quite the contrary. This killer shows an astounding cleverness, exhibiting an ego that mocks the police by making sure the clues he leaves are obvious and in plain sight, while at the same time ensuring that he "plays" by the rules --- warped rules, admittedly, but rules nonetheless.
The small Virginia town of Wrightsburg sees very few murders, and most of those are domestic disputes. So when a body shows up in the woods, the local lawmen get very nervous. Evidence points to foul play immediately, no question. The positioning of the corpse and some gruesome trademarks well known as the MO of a long-ago serial killer leave no doubt about that. Has the Zodiac started up again? Authorities don't think so, since his age would render him incapable of the physical strength required to snuff the life out of the young woman, not to mention muscle the body deep into the woods. A copycat maybe? An equally chilling thought, but it, too, soon proves to be a dead end. Maybe a pair working in tandem?

Human Missions to Mars
Enabling Technologies for Exploring the Red Planet
Publisher: Springer 1st Edition
Publication Date: October 2007
ISBN/ASIN: 3540729380
ISBN-13: 978-3540729389
Pages: 542
In Human Missions to Mars Donald Rapp looks at human missions to Mars from
an engineering perspective. He begins by describing the pros and cons of robotic
exploration versus human exploration and then examines the ideas for sending
humans to Mars from the point of view of both the enthusiast and the skeptic.
Chapter 2 describes how space missions are planned and how they may be achieved
as a sequence of separate steps. Chapter 3 deals with the complex issues relating
to the outward journey to Mars and the return leg. The author deals with propulsion
systems and with the analysis of the various trajectories which may be utilized
for such a mission. He divides mission into a number of stages: Earths surface to
low-Earth orbit (LEO); departing from LEO; Mars orbit insertion and landing;
ascent from Mars; trans-Earth injection from Mars orbit and Earth orbit insertion
and landing. Chapter 4 discusses a wide range of elements critical to a human Mars
mission, including life support consumables, radiation effects and shielding,
microgravity effects, abort options and mission safety, possible habitats on the
Martian surface and aero assisted orbit insertion and entry decent and landing.
For any human mission to the Red Planet the possible utilization of any resources
indigenous to Mars would be of great value and such possibilities are discussed
in Chapter 5. The use of indigenous resources on the Moon is described as a
precursor to the availability of similar resources on Mars and issues such as
fuelling Mars-bound craft from lunar resources, the use of lunar ferries, staging,
assembly and refueling in near-Earth space are all discussed. The important
applications arising from the transportation of hydrogen to Mars are also described.
Chapter 6 deals with a range of previous Mars mission studies and the technologies they employed. Chapter 7 looks as how NASA is planning for its return to the Moon,
and the use of the Moon as a stepping stone to Mars. Chapter 8 presents the authors
detailed analysis of why, in his opinion, the current NASA approach will fail to
send humans to Mars before 2080. The book concludes with three appendices describing
the use of solar energy on the Moon and on Mars and the value of
indigenous water on Mars.

This book is a complete SQL functions reference for all of the major RDBMS vendors in today’s market. The SQL implementations covered in this book include ANSI SQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, IBM Universal Database (UDB) DB2, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. As a SQL programmer, you will find that there is a growing need to effectively use SQL functions, yet there are few resources to serve as an aid. You will also encounter the need to cross-reference different SQL implementations, at times having to integrate data between, say, Oracle and SQL Server.
Migrations of data from one implementation to another is also very common in data warehousing environments, and as organizations make the commitment to go with another vendor’s relational database management system (RDBMS) to better support evolving business needs. This book is the necessary tool to facilitate expedient function referencing, cross-referencing between implementations, creating userdefined functions (UDFs), and providing tips and examples for applying the use of functions to real-world data-retrieval situations.
This book is for the SQL programmer, and any software developer who has a need to effectively retrieve data from a relational database, or to integrate applications with RDBMS implementations. Database administrators and other database users will also discover great value. This book is for readers of all levels, and has been organized in an easy-to-understand format that allows quick search and reference. This book is packed with realistic examples, allowing the reader to immediately apply SQL functions concepts to the job at hand.
Although the intent of this book is not to teach you SQL, the introductory chapters we have provided serve as an introduction to the world of SQL, explaining basic SQL concepts and describing how to use SQL to query a database, either with or without the use of functions. The trailing chapters of this book show numerous applications of SQL functions in the modern database world.

With more than 7,000 zingers, the right crushing retort is always at hand!
No more thinking of an apt reply after it's too late: just store up a collection of choice rejoinders from over 1,000 ways to call somebody a fool and 600 ways to say someone's acting stupid. Pick from hundreds of little-known terms for know-it-alls, egotists, flatterers, and nags. Really want to hit below the belt?
Try a politically incorrect insult that zaps somebody for being too fat or thin, too young or old, or too socially unacceptable, sexually inept, or spiritually impoverished. So from now on, the weird, fussy, boring, loathsome and intolerable, or merely irritating had better watch out!

The Adventures of Tintin is a series of comic strip narratives created by Georges Remi under the pseudonym Herg? (a reversal of his initials, R G, as pronounced in French). They first appeared in French in a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingti?me Si?cle in 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, The Adventures of Tintin present a number of well realised characters in distinctive settings. The series has continued as a favourite of readers and critics alike for over 70 years.
Tintin and Snowy (original French language names: Tintin et Milou) are a pair of "world travellers" who travel around the world in a variety of adventures.

In order for food businesses, scientists and policy makers to develop successful products, services and policies, it is essential that they understand food consumers and how they decide which products to buy. Food consumer behavior is the result of various factors, including the motivations of different consumers, the attributes of specific foods, and the environment in which food choices occur. Recognising diversity between individual consumers, different stages of life, and different cultural context is increasingly important as markets become increasingly diverse and international.

This book is aimed at those who want to learn to be programmers but who haven’t had a background that has exposed them to programming or programmers-teachers, pupils, nurses, lawyers, lorry drivers, pilots. People who see the ability to get a computer to work for them as an advantage that they want to have access to.
It will give you the firm grounding that you need to be able to narrow your field of study and concentrate on the task of specializing in particular programming languages or tasks. In these pages, you won’t find any “how to become a work expert programmer in 5 minutes” or “how to write world-beating applications,” but what you will find is solid information that will enable you to take your skills in the direction they need to go.
The purpose of this book is to allow those who are interested in programming to gather the skills and experience they need to fulfill their goals. The primary focus of this book is, therefore, the skills that are at the core of being a programmer. It shows you the theory of programming and takes a look at this theory in action in real code. I use a variety of languages throughout the book to help demonstrate and explain these concepts.
The languages that you will be looking at include:
- C++
- Java
- VBScript
- JavaScript
This book shows numerous examples of these languages in action as well as providing opportunities to use a variety of programming tools and compilers.

That book presented wireless networking as the enabling communications technology of the 1990s and beyond. Now, only a decade later, mobile and portable telephones and wireless data services are a familiar part of our daily lives, as the twenty-first century witnesses widespread deployment of wireless networks, which has revolutionized the concept of communication and information processing for business, professional, and private applications. The field of wireless communications continues to experience unprecedented market growth, as evidenced by over 1.5 billion cellular telephone subscribers worldwide and the rapid increase in the size of the wireless local area network market for office, home, and public access applications.
The book is written from a systems engineering perspective, by which we mean that the various technical topics are presented in the context of ongoing development of specific new systems and services, as well as key recent developments in national and international spectrum allocations and standards.
Our method of presentation is to organize the myriad of emerging wireless technologies into logical categories that reflect the variety of perspectives that users have toward different networks and services. The book addresses the major segments of wireless technology: first-, second-, and third-generation wide-area cellular networks, wireless local area networks (WLANs), and wireless personal area networks (WPANs), with special attention to the emerging location-aware broadband wireless sensor and ad hoc networks. Although the book covers technology applicable to a wide range of wireless systems, as in the first edition, particular attention is given to indoor wireless communications, an area that is not treated in great depth in most other books.

Error correcting coding is often analyzed in terms of its application to the separate levels within the data network in isolation from each other. In this fresh approach, the authors consider the data network as a superchannel (a multi-layered entity) which allows error correcting coding to be evaluated as it is applied to a number of network layers as a whole. By exposing the problems of applying error correcting coding in data networks, and by discussing coding theory and its applications, this original technique shows how to correct errors in the network through joint coding at different network layers
By progressing from theory through to practical problem solving, this resource contains invaluable advice for researchers, postgraduate students, engineers and computer scientists interested in data communications and applications of coding theory.
The problem of error control coding in data networks is very wide and not yet fully defined today so the authors do not claim to provide a full solution of the problem but are hoping that this book can become a fist step to further research in the fild.

Use Font Folio 11 to expand your design options in virtually any medium — including print, web, video, and electronic documents. Updates to Existing Fonts Every font that was previously shipped on Font Folio has been updated. Most of these are very minor changes that are not expected to cause any reflow of existing documents. In a few cases more extensive changes have been made. Most notably, the coding of OpenType "fraction" and "ordinals" support has been updated so that more fonts support full arbitrary fractions and more flexible use of ordinals. Note that as recommended previously, you should not apply "fraction" or "ordinal" formatting globally to text, but only to the fractions or ordinals themselves. Applying such formatting more broadly may cause problems when switching typefaces or using an updated version of the same font. Download part-1 Download part-2 Download part-3 | |

Book Description:
Get ready to roll up those shirtsleeves, pop the hood, and get a little Windows grime under those fingernails! This is a book about tools, nuts and bolts. Through lucid tutorials and examples, Windows XP Under the Hood shows how to use scripting and batch tools to automate repetitive tasks. You’ll master the gory details of the automation, management, command-line and diagnostic tools that are often given short
shrift in both online documentation and standard end-user books. Then, the detailed reference sections will keep you coming back time and again. This book will help you make the leap from accomplished user to bona fide Windows hero.
Finally, a hardcore Windows book that digs into the XP interface while not putting the reader to sleep! Lively and written for Windows mechanics who live for more power.
Learn how to create and deploy tools to manage your computers and networks. Here you’ll find a straightforward introduction to scripting with VBScript, coverage of dozens of powerful programming and management objects, and from-the-trenches advice on distributing and managing your new toolkit.
Learn how to master the Command Line. Many books cover Windows Script Host, but none of the others address the powerful and still-useful batch file language and command-line utilities.
Clear, practical examples show how each scripting object, batch file or command line utility can change lives, make the dog behave, and eliminate bad hair days.
Although Microsoft provides the tools, users are hard pressed to find much-if any-documentation on these tools. Rather than learning by osmosis, we suggest that you pick up a copy of this indispensable book.

Binocular Astronomy
Stephen Tonkin, "Binocular Astronomy (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)"
ISBN: 1846283086
PFD
288 Pages
The advantages of using both eyes for astronomical observing are many and considerable, largely because of the way the human brain processes visual information. Binoculars – the usual kinds – are incredibly useful for wide-field observing, but "binocular astronomy" is much more than that, including binocular eyepieces that can be fitted to normal astronomical telescopes, and even giant binocular telescopes that are effectively two astronomical telescopes working in tandem. Here is everything an astronomer needs to know about binocular observing. The book takes an in-depth look at the instruments themselves, and has sections on evaluating and buying binoculars and binocular telescopes, their care, mounting, and accessories. In addition there is a selection of fine objects to be seen with 50mm and 100mm binoculars.

Human Vision and The Night Sky
How to Improve Your Observing Skills (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
ISBN: 0387307761
291 Pages
PDF
This book is intended for amateur astronomers who are readers of Sky & Telescope
magazine or similar astronomy periodicals – or are at least at the same level of
knowledge and enthusiasm. In particular, those of us who have reached a point where
enjoyment is fading because the challenges have run out will appreciate it, because
it takes such people to the "next level" in observational astronomy.
It begins with teaching astronomers to use their most important astronomy tool,
their eyes. Then it discusses how to select the right telescope – taking into account
that everyone is unique – and shows readers how to set up and care for their instruments.
Subsequent chapters take the readers on a tour of the solar system as they have never
viewed it before… through their own eyes. We start close to home with the hidden
treasures of the Moon, on to investigate the power of the Sun, incredibly hot Mercury,
the subtleties of Venus, the changing surface of Mars, the outer solar system and
then on into deep space. Each chapter includes a series of observing challenges
that will entertain and push the reader to continually higher levels of achievement.
Amateur astronomers will learn, through this book, many of the same lessons that
professionals learned as they conducted similar observations.

Lunar and Planetary Webcam User's Guide
(Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy Series)
ISBN / ASIN: 1846281970
224 Pages
PDF
In the last few years, cheap webcams have revolutionized amateur astronomy by
providing a very inexpensive alternative to purpose-made astronomical CCD cameras,
which use refrigerated imaging chips and are thus extremely expensive. Webcams are
capable of more advanced work than 'normal' digital cameras because their simple
construction makes it easy to remove the webcam's lens, allowing it to be interfaced
directly to a telescope. Using a webcam is not difficult but most amateur astronomers
who have tried to do this do not achieve the finest results, despite the webcam's
potential. There are numerous imaging and image processing tricks and techniques,
and all of them are needed to get the best results.
Along with webcam technology has come simple-to-use image processing and enhancement
using a PC: the most powerful technique is, 'stacking' in which the best images
(out of hundreds) are selected and summed automatically to provide startlingly
good results.
"Lunar and Planetary Webcam User’s Guide" de-mystifies the jargon of webcams and
computer processing, and provides detailed hints and tips for imaging the Sun, Moon
and planets with a webcam. He looks at each observing target separately, describing
and explaining all specialised techniques in context.
Glance through the images in this book to see just how much you can – easily – achieve
by using a webcam with your telescope!

If you are developing databases for your own use, you may not mind opening forms or printing reports directly from the database window, and you know what query to run before printing which report or exporting data to Word. However, if you are planning to create applications for the use of others, particularly for clients who aren’t familiar with Access, and don’t understand databases in general, you have to do a lot more work, mostly in the form of writing VBA code to automate the application’s processes.
As a rule of thumb, it’s generally true that the easier the application is for the end user, the harder (and more time-consuming) it is to develop. In this book I concentrate on teaching you how to set up your tables and relationships to ensure that the database is properly normalized, and write VBA code to create the connective tissue that turns a bunch of tables, queries, forms and reports into a complete and coherent application.
This book is for experienced Access users who are familiar with creating Access objects and writing VBA code, but who need help transitioning from competent users/programmers to full-fledged Access developers.
The book is divided into three parts, each centered around a separate case application. The first shows best methods for building a relatively simple Access application using the developer's own data. The next section shows how to build a distributed application serving multiple clients and types of data. The chapters in this section cover each step in the application lifecycle — from gathering application requirements from clients to migrating data from legacy systems to the new Access database system.
The last section of the book shows how to build Access applications that work with other Office applications, inlcuding Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as non-Office applications. These integration issues cover some of the thorniest problems an Access developer will face. Feddema's years of experience as an author, consultant, and trainer ensure that she can provide highly original solutions and workarounds.

Enterprise integration and Web application developers predictably groan when they hear the word “portal” — nightmares of proprietary APIs, oversold features, and shoddy tool integrations. The authors of this book have been involved in over a dozen production portal efforts over the last several years. In that time, we have dealt with numerous products and frameworks, including some in-house frameworks based on servlets and JSPs. Through all of this, we began to wonder whether these commercial suites were really providing any value. We started to realize that we could put together a framework from open-source products.
We would like to point out that our portal framework is not meant to be an all-or-nothing solution. We present a number of tools that you may use to satisfy your enterprise portal needs, and we demonstrate how to use them, but because portal efforts are largely integration efforts, it would be folly to presume that anyone will drop all of their current systems and pick up our framework.
This book explains a set of tools at the foundation of an open-source portal framework, and demonstrates how to build your own portal using open-source tools. However, before describing the structure of the book, it makes sense to cover some fundamental concepts addressed therein.
