ASP.NET Website Programming shows you how to build an interactive website from design to deployment. Packed with solutions to website programming problems, this book will have you building well-engineered, extendable ASP.NET websites quickly and easily. This book is for developers who use ASP.NET and Visual Basic .NET or use Visual Studio .NET Professional or above or Visual Basic .NET Standard.
The book concentrates on websites that focus on content. It does not show how to produce an e-commerce system, although a lot of the advice will apply to e-commerce sites. We could add a shopping basket module using the same foundations, for example. This book is different from most Wrox books, because we build a single working website throughout the book. However, each chapter stands alone and shows how to develop individual modules, which you can adapt for your own websites. We also suggest a framework that allows us to create modules and slot them in to the website quickly and easily.
The book is for developers who have a reasonable knowledge of ASP.NET, and want to apply that knowledge to building websites. You will get the most from this book if you have read a decent amount of Wrox's Beginning ASP.NET using Visual Basic .NET, or Professional ASP.NET and a VB.NET book. You should be comfortable using Visual Studio .NET to create ASP.NET projects, and that you know VB.NET.

If you've thought of programmers as elite intelligentsia who possess expertise (and perhaps genes) the rest of us will never have, think again. "C++ For Dummies, 5th Edition", debunks the myths, blasts the barriers, shares the secrets, and gets you started. In fact, by the end of Chapter 1, you'll be able to create a C++ program. OK, it won't be newest, flashiest video game, but it might be a practical, customized inventory control or record keeping program. Most people catch on faster when they actually DO something, so "C++ For Dummies" includes a CD ROM that gives you all you need to start programming (except the guidance in the book, of course), including: Dev C, a full featured, integrated C++ compiler and editor you install to get down to business; the source code for the programs in the book, including code for Budget, programs that demonstrate principles in the book; documentation for the Standard Template Library; online C++ help files written by Stephen Randy Davis, author of "C++ Weekend Crash Course", "C++ for Dummies", takes you through the programming process step by step. You'll discover how to: generate an executable; create source code, commenting it as you go and using consistent code indentation and naming conventions; write declarations and name variables, and calculate expressions; write and use a function, store sequences in arrays, and declare and use pointer variables; understand classes and object oriented programming; work with constructors and destructors; use inheritance to extend classes; use stream I/O; comment your code as you go, and use consistent code indentation and naming conventions; and automate programming with the Standard Template Library (STL).

Jean Hugard's "Encyclopedia of Card Tricks" remains one of the most comprehensive and exhaustive texts on card effects even after 60 years of being in publication. A brief summary of the table of contents shows the variety of effects covered: impromptu card tricks, spelling effects, "you do as I do", special cards, special decks (Svengali, Mene-Tekel, Stripper), calculation effects, and miscellaneous card tricks. Hugard describes the effects clearly and accurately, attributes the originator of the effect (if known), and occasionally offers an editorial comment or suggestion. The book is quite literally a gold mine of information, awaiting an interested and motivated magician to mine its contents.

This book is about programming per se. It is about the most elementary principles of program construction—problem decomposition, invariant properties, and guarantees of progress. It is intended to appeal to both novice programmers, who wish to start on the right track, and to experienced programmers who wish to properly master their craft.
Although the subject matter of the book is 'elementary', in the sense of foundational, it is not 'easy'. Programming is challenging, and it is wrong to skirt the issues or to wrap it up in a way that makes it seem otherwise. I have lectured on this material for many years, mostly to undergraduates on computing science degrees, and, occasionally, to professional programmers. Inevitably, it is the experienced programmers who appreciate its value the most. Novice programmers have the additional hurdle of learning how to write code—too often in a highly complex programming language. For them, the problem is the programming language, whereas, of course, the programming language should not be a problem, but part of the solution.
The book has been written primarily for self-study. Many exercises have been supplied, with complete solutions, interspersed throughout the text. Only by making a serious attempt at the exercises can the material be properly mastered. My hope is that readers will do the exercises as they read, rather than postponing them until the chapter has been completed. Many of the exercises are quite challenging; the solutions are there to be consulted, so that the reader can build up confidence and experience in an effective, calculational style of reasoning.

In the pages of this book are the secrets I’ve uncovered and discovered through more than 20 years of working with literally thousands of IT professionals around the world. My goal is to expose these secrets as plainly and completely as I possibly can.
One of these secrets is unraveling the relationship between service-level management and forecasting Oracle performance. The difficulty lies in the breadth and depth of each of these topics. They are both massive and fork off in a variety of directions. If you are able to bring the two together, you will be able to architect, build, use, and explain to others how they can better manage the delivery of IT services. I will, as clearly as I can throughout this book, present both these areas of IT and then weave them together. The result will leave you with a confident understanding so you can deal with the realities of IT.
So many people from a variety of backgrounds need to know about this information, it’s difficult to pinpoint just who will benefit. But when pressed for a list of those who will most likely benefit, I would have to say DBAs, IT managers, capacity planners, systems integrators, and developers.

Knowledge and the sudden experience of understanding can be as thrilling as the solution to any puzzle or riddle, since knowledge always resolves a mystery-that of not knowing. Most people are familiar with the names Plato, Machiavelli, Spinoza, and Simone de Beauvoir, but remain unsure of their significance. Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers provides succinct descriptions of the essential thought of one hundred major philosophers, including some who are not seen primarily as philosophers, such as Darwin, Freud, and Einstein. Presenting biographical details, quotations, and clear explanations, Philosophy serves as a thorough and accessible introduction to the Western intellectual tradition, covering philosophical, scientific, political, and religious thought over a period of 2,500 years.

Tomorrow, all communications will happen over IP. In the past, telecom operators handled most communications, and the main business for them was voice communication. In reality, almost all last-mile communications today still happen over the conventional telecom infrastructure. The backbone of the Internet has been going through a fast transition to faster and faster fiber optics and digital data transfer. The era of analog communications has been over for some time already.
Today, people speak of Voice over IP, but a better name for the Next Generation Networks is Everything over IP (EoIP). And all of that communication will be wireless. But what does that have to do with the topic of this book? It means the world has to finally wake up to the security of the communications networks.
To be secure, you have to understand that wireless networks are always open. While in traditional telephone networks all the switches were kept behind locked doors and all the cabling was protected, in wireless technology there are no cables and everyone has access to wireless access points. One compromised infrastructure component, and the entire network is compromised. One virus-contaminated access device, and everyone in the network will be contaminated.
This book is built around voice as the application to be secured, but the principles apply to any communications. Studying this book should be obligatory to all students in computer engineering and computer science, not only due to its content and deep understanding of VoIP security, but also to allow them to learn how to apply the best practices in other fields, no matter what their future field of study will be. The key to learning is not only studying things and memorizing the various topics, but learning how to apply the best practices of other fields in your own. Combining the best practices of traditional telecommunications, e-mail, and the web into new next-generation technologies is essential to be able to build reliable and usable communication technologies. Voice over IP is potentially the killer application, destroying conventional communication networks and creating a new IP-based communication infrastructure.

This book has been designed from a practical, task-oriented approach so that the information taught is backed up with solid examples that confirm and extend the text. If you’re someone who prefers to get straight into your learning experience, rather than try to wade through thousands of pages of text, this is exactly the book you need. From the first chapter, you will be writing programs and learning how to use Visual Basic to solve common programming tasks.
If you’ve used the Basic language in its previous forms, you’ll appreciate the elegance and simplicity of this latest iteration, which is coupled with the most powerful library of functions and classes Visual Basic has ever been able to access. In addition, if you’re new to the language or new to programming, this book will introduce you to the important concepts and information you’ll need to get up to speed — by the end of this book, you’ll find that Visual Basic Express is so easy to learn that you’ll wonder why you haven’t been programming already.
This book is completely, unabashedly focused on the just released Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition. From installation to deployment, everything that you can do in Visual Basic Express is discussed here so you can get up to speed as quickly as possible.
To use this book you’ll need Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition installed, as well as SQL Server Express for some of the later topics. Apart from that, everything else you will create yourself by following the examples and exercises found in each chapter. If you’re not sure of the best way to tackle an exercise at the end of a chapter, Appendix C has suggested answers for each one so you can be confident that you’re learning what you need to know.

In this book, you will learn about what drives the Linux development process. You will discover the wide variety of tools commonly used by Linux developers – compilers, debuggers, Software Configuration Management – and how those tools are used to build application software, tools, utilities and even the Linux kernel itself. You will learn about the unique components of a Linux system that really set it apart from other UNIX-like systems, and you will delve into the inner workings of the system in order to better understand your role as one of a budding new generation of Linux developers.
You will learn about novel development methods, including the use of virtualization technology, cross-compilation as a means to build software for different compatible platforms. You will also learn about the importance of internationalization to a community that has no borders – Linux is truly international and so are its users. Finally, you will learn about wider uses of Linux with the modern Internet by writing software for the oft-touted LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/Python) stack. Linux is about so much more than just the Linux kernel itself – and it’s important to realize that as a Linux developer.
This book is written for two different kinds of reader. First and foremost, this book is targeted at existing programmers looking to make the switch to Linux. Such readers will already have some familiarity with the C programming language and understand fundamental concepts – compilers, linkers, debuggers, and so on. They will have likely read an introductory text on the subject – for example, Wrox’s Beginning Linux Programming (Wiley 2004), but will have little practical experience.
For those who are new to professionally developing software for Linux, the content of the book is ordered for your benefit. You should be able to begin reading at the beginning and read right through in the order presented. Optionally, you might decide to skip over the kernel material (Chapters 7-9) and concentrate more on the higher level applications and tools used in everyday projects outside of the Linux kernel. You will find the background on Toolchains, Portability, and SCMs of particular use.

This book focuses on using SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SSE) to design and build your desktop and web applications. In addition to the tools supplied with SSE, Visual Basic Express 2005 and Web Express 2005 are used to for application development. The features that are unique to SSE such as Xcopy, User Instances, and deployment are also covered in detail. The Microsoft SQL Server Books Online focuses primarily on other editions of SQL Server, and the details specific to its free edition is often lost. You can use this book not only to jump start your database application development, but also as a reference on SSE features.
This book assumes you have very little background with either databases or programming. You may never have created a single application of any kind. No prior programming experience is required, but you should have an aptitude for working with software and a desire to learn. If you have a desire to learn and an interest in storing information in a database—and in creating drop-dead simple applications to work with the data—this book has a lot to offer. The step-by-step samples cover all the major scenarios SSE is designed for, from installation and development to debugging and deployment.
Alternatively, if you are a more experienced developer, you may find this book useful because it describes a number of new features that are unique to SSE that make working with SSE much easier than with its predecessor, MSDE. You get an insight into the SSE design and architecture from the authors who are intimately involved in the creation of many of these features. In addition, you will find useful information about the various deployment and programmatic features that are not properly documented.
There are four major areas in this book. The first part is a basic introduction to SQL Server, VB Express, and some basics of working with databases. Next, you move into richer application development topics. In the third part, you will learn some of the details of setting up and distributing SSE in scenarios that are more sophisticated. Finally, there is a section on developing multi-user applications.
TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - Getting Started with SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
Chapter 02 - Database Basics with SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition
Chapter 03 - Creating a Simple Database Application
Chapter 04 - Developing a Rich Client Database Application
Chapter 05 - Developing a Rich Web Database Application
Chapter 06 - Understanding Xcopy Deployment and User Instance Model
Chapter 07 - Using XML in Your Database Application
Chapter 08 - Debugging Database Applications
Chapter 09 - Understanding SQL Server Express Setup
Chapter 10 - Deploying Your Application
Chapter 11 - Migrating from Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE)
Chapter 12 - Migrating from Jet and Microsoft Access to MSDE and SSE
Chapter 13 - Securing Your Multi-User Database Application
Chapter 14 - Upgrading from SSE to Other SQL Server 2005 Editions
Chapter 15 - Building Robust Multi-User Database Applications

The purpose of this book is to describe a practical approach for making sense out of data. A step-by-step process is introduced that is designed to help you avoid some of the common pitfalls associated with complex data analysis or data mining projects. It covers some of the more common tasks relating to the analysis of data including (1) how to summarize and interpret the data, (2) how to identify nontrivial facts, patterns, and relationships in the data, and (3) how to make predictions from the data.
The book is focused on practical approaches and contains information on how the techniques operate as well as suggestions for when and how to use the different methods. Each chapter includes a further reading section that highlights additional books and online resources that provide background and other information. At the end of selected chapters are a set of exercises designed to help in understanding the respective chapter’s materials.

This introductory textbook puts forth a clear and focused point of view on the differential geometry of curves and surfaces, emphasizing the global aspects. The excellent collection of examples and exercises (with hints) will help students in learning the material. Advanced undergraduates and graduate students will find this a nice entry point to differential geometry.
In order to study the global properties of curves and surfaces, it is necessary to have more sophisticated tools than are usually found in textbooks on the topic. In particular, students must have a firm grasp on certain topological theories. Indeed, this monograph treats the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and discusses the Euler characteristic. The authors also cover Alexandrov's theorem on embedded compact surfaces in $mathbb{R}^3$ with constant mean curvature. The last chapter addresses the global geometry of curves, including periodic space curves and the four-vertices theorem for plane curves that are not necessarily convex.
This volume is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and researchers interested in the differential geometry of curves and surfaces. It can also be used as an introduction to a more general study of differential geometry.
This book is jointly published by the AMS and the Real Sociedad Matem?tica Española (RSME).

This book, at its core, is all about building your own set of tools from which you can draw inspiration as you work with SQL Server. I try to explain not only the hows of each concept described herein, but also the whys. And in many examples throughout the book, I attempt to delve into the process I took for finding what I feel is the optimal solution. My goal is to share with you how I think through problems. Whether or not you find my approach to be directly usable, my hope is that you can harness it as a means by which to tune your own development methodology.
This book is arranged into three logical sections. The first four chapters deal with software development methodologies as they apply to SQL Server. The next three chapters get into advanced features specific to SQL Server. And the final four chapters are more architecturally focused, delving into specific design and implementation issues around some of the more difficult topics I’ve encountered in past projects.
The primary purpose of this book is to bring Microsoft SQL Server developers back into the software development fold. These pages stress rigorous testing, well-thought-out architectures, and careful attention to interdependencies. Proper consideration of these areas is the hallmark of an expert software developer—and database professionals, as the core members of any software development team, simply cannot afford to lack this expertise.

Software security is the practice of building software to be secure and function properly under malicious attack. This book is about one of software security’s most important practices: code review with a static analysis tool.
In my book Software Security, I introduce a set of seven best practices called touchpoints. Putting software security into practice requires making some changes to the way most organizations build software. The good news is that these changes don’t need to be fundamental, earth shattering, or cost-prohibitive. In fact, adopting a straightforward set of engineering best practices, designed in such a way that security can be interleaved into existing development processes, is often all it takes.
The book is not a guide to using security features, frameworks, or APIs. We do not discuss the Java Security Manager, advanced cryptographic techniques, or the right approach to identity management. Clearly, these are important topics. They are so important, in fact, that they warrant books of their own. Our goal is to focus on things unrelated to security features that put security at risk when they go wrong.
This book is written for people who have decided to make software security a priority. We hope that programmers, managers, and software architects will all benefit from reading it. Although we do not assume any detailed knowledge about software security or static analysis, we cover the subject matter in enough depth that we hope professional code reviewers and penetration testers will benefit, too. We do assume that you are comfortable programming in either C or Java, and that you won’t be too uncomfortable reading short examples in either language. Some chapters are slanted more toward one language than another. For instance, the examples in the chapters on buffer overflow are written in C.

An Introduction to Cryptography provides a solid mathematical treatment of cryptography for readers with little or no background in number theory. Although intended for undergraduate students, it contains enough optional, advanced material to challenge even the most informed reader and provides a solid basis for a second course on the subject. Throughout the book, the author incorporates nearly 300 problems, more than 80 examples, and over 60 diagrams, figures, and tables, as well as optional topics that go beyond the basics. An extensive index, appendices that review background material, and a list of symbols for easy reference complete this outstanding text.
This edition presents the ideas behind cryptography and the applications of the subject. The first chapter provides a thorough treatment of the mathematics necessary to understand cryptography, including number theory and complexity, while the second chapter discusses cryptographic fundamentals, such as ciphers, linear feedback shift registers, modes of operation, and attacks. The next several chapters discuss DES, AES, public-key cryptography, primality testing, and various factoring methods, from classical to elliptical curves. The final chapters are comprised of issues pertaining to the Internet, such as pretty good privacy (PGP), protocol layers, firewalls, and cookies, as well as applications, including login and network security, viruses, smart cards, and biometrics. The book concludes with appendices on mathematical data, computer arithmetic, the Rijndael S-Box, knapsack ciphers, the Silver-Pohlig-Hellman algorithm, the SHA-1 algorithm, radix-64 encoding, and quantum cryptography.

| “ | Late Antiquity, no doubt, was a “time of transition or rather transitions”.In spite of extensive research on the “Germanic” (or, from the Roman point of view, “barbarian”) invasions and the successor states of the Roman Empire, comparatively little attention has been paid to the “transition of peoples”, or their “developing” into kingdoms. This volume is deliberately not just confined to the “Germanic” peoples (Anglo-Saxons, Bavarians, Burgundians, Franks, Langobards, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Visigoths), but compares these with the West and East Roman tradition (Byzantium and Late Antique Spain) and also with non-Germanic peoples (such as Celts, Huns and Avars), and even with the Islamic kingdoms in early medieval Spain. It also seemed advisable to include a comparative survey of the different Germanic laws. | ” |

| “ | Amateur astronomy has changed beyond recognition in less than two decades. The reason is, of course, technology. Affordable high-quality telescopes, computer-controlled 'go to' mountings, autoguiders, CCD cameras, video, and (as always) computers and the Internet, are just a few of the advances that have revolutionized astronomy for the twenty-first century. Martin Mobberley first looks at the basics before going into an in-depth study of whats available commercially. He then moves on to the revolutionary possibilities that are open to amateurs, from imaging, through spectroscopy and photometry, to patrolling for near-earth objects - the search for comets and asteroids that may come close to, or even hit, the earth. The New Amateur Astronomer is a road map of the new astronomy, equally suitable for newcomers who want an introduction, or old hands who need to keep abreast of innovations. | ” |

| “ | Observing variable stars is one of the major contributions amateur astronomers make to science. There are 36,000 variable stars listed in the General Catalogue of Variable Stars, so it is clearly impossible for the limited number of professional observatories to target even the majority of them. That's where amateur astronomers come in - thousands of them turning their telescopes to the sky every night. Variable star observing is the most popular of "real science" activities for amateurs, and Gerry Good's book provides everything needed. The first part of the book provides a highly detailed account of the various classes of variable star, with examples, illustrations and physical descriptions. The second section covers practical aspects of observing, everything from preparation and planning, through observing techniques, to data management and reduction. | ” |

This book is a practical guide for developers and information technology managers. It is focused on conveying what elements make up a portal and how to construct these elements using the Microsoft development platform. It is a combination of introductions to key concepts, suggestions for portal planning, and limited detailed technical instruction by way of examples that relate to all the main portal elements. Most chapters describe what to build and then show how to build it.
The most important section for managers is the first five chapters. These chapters address the portal from the perspective of a user and provide valuable background that can help managers form reasonable project expectations. The focus is not on individual products and features. Indeed, portals with the functionality described here could be implemented with a number of different technologies and products, and these are introduced in the second part of the book.
Developers will spend more time with the remainder of the book to understand how to fill the gap between products and where each portal service belongs. They will want to review the early chapters to understand the vision for a .NET portal and to ensure that the IT manager doesn't know something that they don't. These later chapters do not attempt to restate the vast amount of information in help files and product documentation for the products used in our examples. Rather, our goal is to create a higher-level overview that encompasses multiple products and puts each product and feature in its proper place. We also highlight best practices and hints that are not found in the product documentation but can save many hours of work or frustration.
There are no prerequisites for grasping the material in this book, as it explains the anatomy of a portal from the ground up. Our goals are to provide a compelling vision for portals that can be applied to your business requirements and to explain in detail how this vision maps to the Microsoft .NET Framework and web services.

In the 1960s, it became increasingly clear that more and more information was going to be stored on computers, not on pieces of paper. With these changes in technology and the ways it was used came a need to protect both the systems and the information. For the next ten years, encryption systems of varying strengths were developed, but none proved to be rigorous enough. In 1973, the NBS put out an open call for a new, stronger encryption system that would become the new federal standard. Several years later, IBM responded with a system called Lucifer that came to simply be known as DES (data encryption standard).
The strength of an encryption system is best measured by the attacks it is able to withstand, and because DES was the federal standard, many tried to test its limits. (It should also be noted that a number of cryptographers and computer scientists told the NSA that DES was not nearly strong enough and would be easily hacked.) Rogue hackers, usually out to steal as much information as possible, tried to break DES. A number of “white hat” hackers also tested the system and reported on their successes. Still others attacked DES because they believed it had outlived its effectiveness and was becoming increasingly vulnerable. The sum total of these efforts to use all of the possible keys to break DES over time made for a brute force attack.
In 1996, the supposedly uncrackable DES was broken. In this captivating and intriguing book, Matt Curtin charts DES’s rise and fall and chronicles the efforts of those who were determined to master it.

This book is all about wrangling a herd of network computers so that all display the correct time. This may seem like a really narrow business, but the issues go far beyond winding the clock on your display taskbar. Carefully coordinated, reliable, and accurate time is vital for traffic control in the air and on the ground, buying and selling things, and TV network programming. Even worse, ill-gotten time might cause domain name system (DNS) caches to expire and the entire Internet to implode on the root servers, which was considered a serious threat on the eve of the millennium in 1999. Critical data files might expire before they are created, and an electronic message might arrive before it was sent. Reliable and accurate computer time is necessary for any real-time distributed computer application, which is what much of our public infrastructure has become.
This book speaks to the technological infrastructure of time dissemination, distribution, and synchronization, specifically the architecture, protocols, and algorithms of the Network Time Protocol (NTP). NTP has been active in one form or another for more than two decades on the public Internet and numerous private networks on the nether side of firewalls. Just about everything today that can be connected to a network wire has support for NTP — print servers, Wi-Fi access points, routers of every stripe, and even battery backup systems. NTP subnets are in space, on the seabed, on board warships, and on every continent, including Antarctica. NTP comes with Windows/XP and NT2000, as well as all flavors of Unix.
This book is designed primarily as a reference book, but is suitable for a specialized university course at the senior or graduate level in both computer engineering and computer science departments. Some chapters may go down more easily for an electrical engineer, especially those dealing with mathematical concepts; others more easily for a computer scientist, especially those dealing with computing theory, but each will learn from the other. There are things for mathematicians and cryptographers, even something for historians.

Laptops--call them notebooks, portable computers, or whatever else you like--are tightly engineered items. It's hard to get all the required components to obey stringent performance and power-management requirements, and still fit into a small case. The job usually requires a custom motherboard and other specialized components, and so the laptop owner who wants to upgrade his or her machine faces a much more difficult task than the owner of a desktop machine with a similar wish. One can swap out the hard drive, add more RAM, and make tweaks in software, but almost everything else requires the addition of external components, which kind of defeat the purpose of a laptop. That's the message the reader takes away from Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. It's not Mueller's fault that such computers are hard to do much with, and that your best upgrade procedure is often a visit to an auction site.
That said, Mueller does a great job of explaining how laptops work--how the engineers went about cramming all those heat-generating components into those miniature chassis in the first place. He also explains a lot of interesting component theory, such as how magnetic hard drives store data and how various DVD standards differ. The information makes for good reading, and comes in handy when you're shopping. He also demonstrates his skill--long well-reputed among builders and repairers of desktop machines--in teaching diagnostics. He explains, for example, how to test a laptop power supply, and why you should consider it a prime suspect in a malfunctioning computer even if the LEDs come on and the cooling fan spins. A CD-ROM features videos that show disassembly procedures--a strategy that works better than photographs and numbered steps.
Topics covered:
How portable computers work (and sometimes fail to work), and how to diagnose their woes. Sections address general troubleshooting concepts, system disassembly, and various subsystems such as memory, CPU, storage, and video. Coverage of PCMCIA (PC Card) is particularly good.
Book Description:
Beyond cutting edge, Scott Mueller goes where no computer book author has gone before--right past all the warranty stickers, the hidden screws, and the fear factor to produce a real owner's manual that every laptop owner should have on his desk. This book shows the upgrades users can perform, the ones that are better left to the manufacturer, and how to use add-on peripherals to make the most of a laptop. The CD contains one-of-a-kind video showing just what's inside a portable PC. For readers who have ever wondered what goes on inside their portable PC, how to upgrade/repair the portable PC or how to live on the road with it, this is the one must-have book of the year!

The Spud Gun is the reinvention of the old polish cannon, a fairly harmless toy that nondork guy kids discover about the age of 13. A Polish cannon, or Spud Gun(its name of choice among media harpies) is a pipe or other pelled ussually by ignited lighter fluid. In the old days, rich guys fired tennis balls while we poorer kids used hard green tomatoes in this silent blaster.

The fact that some alternative health treatments are now covered by health insurance is proof that they have entered the mainstream. The second edition of this set is "a one-stop source for alternative medical information" containing more than 800 articles covering 150 therapies, 275 diseases and conditions, and 300 herbs and other remedies. Alternative health practitioners, educators, pharmacists, and medical writers wrote the alphabetical, signed articles. All entries have resource lists of books, articles, and organizations, and many are illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Sidebars with biographies of leaders in the field, such as Edward Bach, Deepak Chopra, and David Palmer, are a new feature. A photo gallery of color plates of medicinal plants appears in each volume. Many entries have sidebars containing glossaries of key terms.
The entries for therapies (Acupuncture, Rolfing) discuss origins, benefits, precautions, side effects, and research and general acceptance. Those covering herbs and other remedies (Gotu kola, Saw palmetto) describe general use, preparations, precautions, side effects, and interactions. Information about diseases and conditions covers definitions, descriptions, causes and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, allopathic treatment, expected results, and prevention. Cross-references make locating relevant material easy. The articles are written in lay language, so they are easy to read and understand.
The second edition has a glossary and an expanded organization list that includes mainstream organizations such as the American Medical Association. It also has information about the efficacy of the various treatments based on research conducted at institutions such as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health. Controversial topics, such as the link between childhood vaccines and autism, are covered, but the article on vaccines does not include a citation for the information on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Web site citing studies that show no evidence for this.
Although this edition has only 50 new articles, the expanded coverage and inclusion of evidence-based study data make it a valuable addition to collections in health-science, consumer health, and large public libraries.

The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the C++ programming language and its applications to the field of Quantitative Finance. It is a self-contained introduction to the syntax of C++ in combination with its applications to current topics of interest. In particular, we develop libraries, frameworks and applications for a variety of derivatives models using numerical methods such as binomial and trinomial trees, finite difference methods (FDM) and the Monte Carlo (MC) method.
The book consists of three major parts. The first part concentrates on essential C++ syntax that must be learned before proceeding. The second part introduces generic programming and design pattern techniques and we show how to create libraries and data structures that we use in part three that deals with full applications. We also have written a number of chapters on topics related to the current book, for example a review of the C language, interfacing with Excel and an introduction to the Component Object Model (COM).
We have written this book for quantitative analysts, designers and other professionals who are involved in developing front office and trading systems. The book is structured in such a way that both novice and experienced developers can use it to write applications in Quantitative Finance. The book is also suitable for university students in finance, mathematics and other disciplines where C++ is used as the language for computation.

Dr. A.J. Edwards explains how to achieve the ISO 14001 standard aided by resources freely available from the accompanying website, including a sample manual and detailed sample registers and procedures. Together, these provide a quick and straightforward guide to achieving the requirements of ISO 14001 Environmental Certification.
This revised edition has been updated to cover the latest developments in the interpretation of the standard, plus changes in related legislation, such as the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), Control of Pollution regulations, Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations, Landfill charges, Pollution Prevention and Control, and Asbestos Regulations. In addition, the new ISO 19011:2002 standard for auditing is reflected in the book, as are approaches to phased introduction of ISO 14001.
Many organisations working towards ISO 14001 already possess ISO 9000 registration, or choose to achieve ISO 14001 and ISO 9000 simultaneously as an integrated system. To prevent duplication, ISO 14001 Environmental Certification Step by Step includes cross-referencing of ISO 14001 requirements to the relevant procedures in the Quality System.
* A do-it-yourself manual, with steps to success and simple explanatory notes
* Revised and updated to cover developments in the interpretation of the standard, changes in related legislation, such as the EU's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), new standards and standards

Tired of getting swamped in the nitty-gritty of cross-browser, Web 2.0-grade JavaScript? Get back in the game with Prototype and script.aculo.us, two extremely popular JavaScript libraries, that make it a walk in the park. Be it AJAX, drag and drop, auto-completion, advanced visual effects, or many other great features, all you need is write one or two lines of script that look so good they could almost pass for Ruby code!
Web applications are getting richer and richer, with more interaction baked in every day. But JavaScript, DOM, CSS and a full host of other Web standards are quite complex, and the result isn't always browser compliant.
The Prototype and script.aculo.us libraries are veritable treasure troves, smoothing over all the usual nitty-gritty differences between browsers, and making most common features a breeze to implement. With this book, you can quickly wield the whole power of these extraordinary libraries.
Dive into Prototype, the library that makes JavaScript so much more powerful, and it looks a lot like Ruby code. Exploring the DOM, handling events, taming AJAX, and radically simplifying most of your scripting code: it all becomes easy-and very portable-with Prototype.
When it comes to advanced UI features, script.aculo.us is every web developer's dream come true: whether you need to create auto-completed text inputs, implement in-place editors, provide customized drag-and-drop behaviors, capture your users' attention with visual effects or simply build DOM fragments more efficiently, it's all there, and lightweight too.
This book guides you through all the details of these features, letting you use many technologies on the server side, such as PHP, vanilla Ruby, and Ruby On Rails, in countless examples illustrating every aspect. Power users will also learn the design philosophies of the libraries, and how to contribute to them and augment them for their own needs.
