John R. Vacca "Practical Internet Security"
Publisher: Springer | Number Of Pages: 536 | 1.45 MB | PDF | 2006-10-18 | ISBN: 038740533X
As organizations today are linking their systems across enterprise-wide networks and VPNs as well as increasing their exposure to customers, competitors, browsers and hackers on the Internet, it becomes increasingly imperative for Web professionals to be trained in techniques for effectively protecting their sites from internal and external threats. Each connection magnifies the vulnerability to attack. With the increased connectivity to the Internet and the wide availability of automated cracking tools, organizations can no longer simply rely on operating system security to protect their valuable corporate data. Furthermore, the exploding use of Web technologies for corporate intranets and Internet sites has escalated security risks to corporate data and information systems.

Practical Internet Security reveals how the Internet is paving the way for secure communications within organizations and on the public Internet. This book provides the fundamental knowledge needed to analyze risks to a system and to implement a security policy that protects information assets from potential intrusion, damage, or theft. It provides dozens of real-life scenarios and examples, as well as hands-on instruction in securing Web communications and sites. You will learn the common vulnerabilities of Web sites; as well as, how to carry out secure communications across unsecured networks. All system administrators and IT security managers will find this book an essential practical resource.

Wai M Tam, Francis C. M. Lau, Chi K Tse " Digital Communications with Chaos: Multiple Access Techniques and Performance "
Publisher: Elsevier Science | Number Of Pages: 256 | 7.32 MB | PDF | 2006-12-13 | ISBN: 0080451519
Since the 1970's, there has been a great deal of research effort spent on studying chaotic systems and the properties of the chaotic signals generated. Characterized by their wideband, impulse-like autocorrelation and low cross-correlation properties, chaotic signals are useful spread-spectrum signals for carrying digital information. Spectrum spreading has become one of the most popular modulation techniques for high-speed wireless communications. It makes use of signals of very wide bandwidth to carry information at relatively low data rates, and possesses advantages such as low probability of interception, resistance to jamming, multiple-access capability and mitigation to multipath effect, which are particularly important in a wireless scenario. In addition to enjoying the aforementioned benefits, chaotic signals can be generated using simple circuitries, thus lowering the cost of transceivers.

Early study of chaos-based communication systems was focused on a single-user case. In the past few years, more effort has been put on investigating systems with multiple-access capability, which is a key feature of spread-spectrum communication systems. This book presents a detailed study of some multiple-access schemes used for chaos-based communications, and evaluates their performance. In addition, the effectiveness of the multiuser detection techniques, whose primary objective is to reduce interference between users and hence improve performance, is evaluated in the context of multiple-access digital communication systems.

* Hot research topic
* Describes communication technologies for the future
* Authors among the pioneers researching in chaos-based communications

Kweku Ewusi-Mensah " Software Development Failures "
Publisher: The MIT Press | Number Of Pages: 290 | 2003-09-14 | 1.6 MB | ISBN: 0262050722

Failed or abandoned software development projects cost the U.S. economy alone billions of dollars a year. In Software Development Failures, Kweku Ewusi-Mensah offers an empirically grounded study that suggests why these failures happen and how they can be avoided. Case studies analyzed include the well-known Confirm travel industry reservation program, FoxMeyer's Delta, the IRS's Tax System Modernization, the Denver International Airport's Baggage Handling System, and CODIS. It has been estimated that one-third of software development projects fail or are abandoned outright because of cost overruns, delays, and reduced functionality. Some consider this an acceptable risk -- that it is simply the cost of doing business. Ewusi-Mensah argues that understanding the factors involved in development failures will help developers and businesses bring down the rate of software failure and abandoned projects.

Ewusi-Mensah explores the reasons software development projects are vulnerable to failure and why issues of management and organization are at the core of any failed project. He examines these projects not from a deterministically technical perspective but as part of a complex technical and social process; he proposes a framework of factors that contribute to the decision to abandon a project and enumerates the risks and uncertainties inherent in each phase of a project's life cycle. Exploring the multiplicity of factors that make software development risky, he presents empirical data that is reinforced by analyses of the reported cases. He emphasizes the role of the user in the development process and considers the effect of organizational politics on a project. Finally, he considers what lessons can be learned from past failures and how software development practices can be improved.

Jan Blommaert “Discourse: A Critical Introduction"
Cambridge University Press (March 28, 2005) | ISBN: 0521828171 | 314 pages | PDF | 1,5 Mb

Review
"The major contribution of this book is its emphasis on global contexts and their importance for discourse analysis. The author shows in a convincing way that consideration must be given to inequality at a much wider level than only in isolated texts if patterns of inequality are to be fully uncovered and exposed. The particular instances of discourse analysis presented in the book are also exceptionally thorough and well argued. I have no doubt that 'Discourse: A Critical Introduction' will have an excessive impact on the study of discourse, communication and power relations in the future." - Johanna Barodal, University of Bergan, Norway

Product Description
Organized thematically, this introduction outlines the basic principles and moves on to examine the methods and theory of CDA (critical discourse analysis). Topics covered include text and context, language and inequality, choice and determination, history and process, ideology and identity. Jan Blommaert focuses on how language can offer a crucial understanding of wider aspects of power relations, arguing that CDA should specifically analyze the effects of power.

Appetite and Food Intake
Stationary Office | Pages: 376 | 2008-02-21 | ISBN: 1420047833| 5 MB | Rapidshare

A complex interplay of social, economic, psychological, nutritional and physiological forces influence ingestive behavior and demand an integrated research approach to advance understanding of healthful food choices and those that contribute to health disorders including obesity-related chronic diseases.
Taking a multifaceted approach, Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations summarizes current understanding of environmental and physiological determinants of food choice and energy balance. The editors juxtapose pairs of chapters drawn from animal research and human clinical findings to highlight the synergies, and gaps in research approaches to highlight current knowledge and identify areas of needed and promising study.
Beginning with a theoretical consideration of the purported existence and functionality of mechanisms for the regulation of feeding and energy balance, the book progresses through a more detailed consideration of knowledge related to mechanisms recruited from the initial thought of eating through post-ingestive events. Chapters address preingestive motivational, cognitive, and orosensory processes that influence food selection and continue with critical reviews of intestinal and postabsorptive signaling systems and nutrient metabolism. The book concludes with a consideration of how the micro- and macro-nutrient composition of foods influences ingestive behavior and the physiologic consequences of consumption.
By comparing research from basic and applied scientific disciplines and knowledge from animal models and human trials, the editors provide a critical review of current knowledge of ingestive behavior and future research needs.
