Modern Banking focuses on the theory and practice of banking, and its prospects in the new millennium. The book is written for courses in banking and finance at Masters, MBA or advanced undergraduate level. Bank practitioners who wish to deepen and broaden their understanding of banking issues may also be attracted to this book. While they often have exceptional detailed knowledge of the areas they have worked in, busy bankers may be all too unaware of the key broader issues and lack perspective.

Consider the fundamental question: what is unique about a bank? What differentiates it from other financial institutions? Answering these questions begins to show how banks should evolve and adapt – or fail. If bankers know the underlying reasons for why profitable banks exist, it will help them to devise strategies for sustained growth.

Unlike many other books in this field, the focus of the book is on the microeconomic issues related to banks, covering key areas such as what singles a bank out from other financial institutions, the diversification of banks into non-banking financial activities, different types of banks within a banking structure, bank failures, and so on.

TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - What are Banks and What Do They Do?
Chapter 02 - Diversification of Banking Activities
Chapter 03 - Management of Risks in Banking
Chapter 04 - Global Regulation of Banks
Chapter 05 - Bank Structure and Regulation: UK, USA, Japan, EU
Chapter 06 - Banking in Emerging Economies

The latest horror novel from consistently bestselling Saul ( Suffer the Children ; Hellfire ) is set in Silverdale, Colo., a company-town variation on Spielberg surburbia. There, conglomerate TarrenTech provides the high school teams with every advantage, including a high-tech sports clinic. Dr. Martin Ames beefs up the brawny, aggressive teenagers, and it's to him that newcomer Sharon Tanner goes for answers when her gentle son Mark turns into a belligerent jock overnight. This slick, high-concept thriller, which might have been titled Stepford High , won't surprise anyone, but it should please the author's fans as it continues Saul's focus on children as the vehicles and victims of unnatural forces.

The most trusted nonfiction series on the market, Eyewitness Books provide an in-depth, comprehensive look at their subjects with a unique integration of words and pictures.
A fascinating look into some of history’s greatest music makers, from Beethoven to the Beatles.

Roots of Music:
Where did music come from? Nobody knows exactly, because there are no written records.
A good guess would be that thousands of years ago, primitive peoples used music in much the same way as we use it now: to communicate, to pass time while working, to express joy or sadness, or to mark a special occasion.

The first instrument was the one every person is born with—the body.
We have voices to sing and shout with, hands to clap, and feet to stamp.
This is enough to create melody and rhythm, the two basic elements of music.
Hunters imitated the songs of animals they chased, mothers sang their children to sleep, and tribes
rhythmically stamped and shouted to keep away evil spirits.
It is a short step from there to making sounds by banging a sticks together or blowing through a hollow
reed stalk.
So how did we get from there to symphony orchestras and rock stars?

Early Musicians:
The Middle Ages (476–1453 ce) saw the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of the Catholic Church
in Europe, which was crucial to the spread of music through the Western world.
The first church music was called plainsong.
It was monophonic—just a single tune sung by either one person or a group, mostly from memory before musical notation existed.
Throughout this period, secular (nonreligious) music began to flourish, but it was rarely written down.
Most of it was performed by minstrels who composed songs about courtly love and accompanied themselves on the lute, the forerunner of the guitar, and the vielle, a kind of violin.

When I was 16, back in the 1980's, my friend and I bought copies of this book to try and see what kind of explosives we could make. These recipes are dangerous, ineffective, and could potentially burn your house down. Smoking banana peels is not a good idea. Gunpowder is dangerous to home manufacture in any quantity. The recipes only partly work, the booby traps are a farce, and the whole book only makes sense to an immature mind that can picture fighting a guerilla insurgency against invading Soviet scum (moi, circa 1984). Fact of the matter is, children have access to far more dangerous ideas and images on the web than they do out of this book which if serialized and published as a blog, would have gotten the author some mild notoriety but nothing more so than young people airing ridiculous ideas and their body parts on line. As an adult with a child of my own, I can understand the why behind the book, the historical context around it, and the desire by many reviewers, including myself and the author, to just bury the book, but I don't think it needs any more attention than pictures of Barbara Streisand's house, Obama-girl, Britney-Lindsey-Paris, and leaked financial documents from a Swiss bank. Stop looking! Don't stop thinking.

After three years out of the LAPD, Harry Bosch returns, to find the department a different place from the one he left. A new Police Chief has been brought over from New York to give the place a thorough clean up from top to bottom.

Working with his former partner, Kiz Rider, Harry is assigned to the department's Open-Unsolved Unit, working on the thousands of cold cases that haunt the LAPD's files. These detectives are the Closers—they put a shovel in the dirt and turn over the past. By applying new techniques to old evidence they aim to unearth some hidden killers and bring them to justice, for "a city that forgets its murder victims is a city lost." Harry and Kiz are given a politically sensitive case when a DNA match connects a white supremacist to the 1988 murder of Rebecca Verloren, a sixteen-year-old girl. Becky was of mixed race, and the case appears to have a racial angle. This was LA before the riots and Rodney King; the city
was a powder keg waiting for a match. The detectives who worked the case all those years ago seem to have done a decent job, but something doesn't fit. Meanwhile Harry's nemesis, Deputy Chief Irving, is watching him. In the new "clean" LAPD Irving has been sidelined to a meaningless job. Compelled by vengeance, he hopes that Harry will make a slip...

Characters based on James Patterson's international bestsellers When the Wind Blows and The Lake House are re-invented in Maximum Ride and are launched on the ultimate action-packed adventure full of humor and suspense.

Fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it's like to soar above the world. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time--like when Angel, the youngest member of the "Flock," is kidnapped and taken back to the "School" where she and the others were genetically engineered by sinister scientists. Her friends brave a journey to Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare--this one involving fighting off the half-human, half-wolf "Erasers" in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives. Along the way Max discovers from her old friend and father-figure Jeb--now her betrayed and greatest enemy--that her purpose is save the world--but can she?

Program Format: Unabridged
Length: 48 min.

An exciting new tale set in the world of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials saga. Lyra's Oxford opens in the thrilling comfort and familiarity of Jordan College, where Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon sit on the sun-drenched roof looking out over all of Oxford. But their peace is shattered when a strange bird (a witch's daemon, on its own) tumbles out of the sky. It is Ragi, daemon of Yelena Pazhets, and he seeks a healing elixir from an infamous Oxford alchemist (and rumored man slaughterer) to cure his witch of a strange new disease from the South. Lyra and Pan decide to help and guide him (witches are friends, of course) but the closer their winding walk leads them to the alchemist's house, the stronger Lyra's sense that she's walking into a deadly trap.

Standardizing Medication Labels

Tags  [edit]

Medications are an important component of health care, but each year their misuse results in over a million adverse drug events that lead to office and emergency room visits as well as hospitalizations and, in some cases, death. As a patient's most tangible source of information about what drug has been prescribed and how that drug is to be taken, the label on a container of prescription medication is a crucial line of defense against such medication safety problems, yet almost half of all patients misunderstand label instructions about how to take their medicines. Standardizing Medication Labels: Confusing Patients Less is the summary of a workshop, held in Washington, D.C. on October 12, 2007, that was organized to examine what is known about how medication container labeling affects patient safety and to discuss approaches to addressing identified problems.

Identifying the Opportunities in Alternative Energy

Identifying the Opportunities in Alternative Energy
English | 20 pages | PDF | 1.2 MB
The prices of fossil fuels, particularly oil and natural gas, have risen sharply over the past few years. As a result, alternative sources of energy — used specifically in electricity generation and transportation — are garnering increasing attention. Although they still meet only a small percentage of global energy demand, the more commercially viable alternative energy sources are growing rapidly, presenting investors with the potential for attractive long-term opportunities.

What Do We Mean by Alternative Energy?

The alternative-energy segment of the energy industry covers a broad range of sources. These sources range from wellestablished technologies, such as nuclear energy and hydroelectric power, through high-growth segments such as wind and solar power. They also include less tried and tested alternatives, such as hydrogen-powered, fuel-cell technology for use in both electricity generation and as an alternative to gasoline in the automotive industry. These sources cover the gamut from commercially viable and fully competitive with fossil fuels to those that are at a more experimental stage of development, presenting a bigger risk for investors who want to take advantage of the increasing attractiveness of this sector.

The importance of quality of service (QoS) has risen with the recent evolution of telecommunication networks, which are characterised by a great heterogeneity. While many applications require a specific level of assurance from the network; communication networks are characterized by different service providers, transmission means and implementer solutions such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), Internet protocol version 4 (IPv4), IPv6 and MPLS.

Providing comprehensive coverage of QoS issues within heterogeneous network environments, “QoS Over Heterogeneous Networks” looks to find solutions to questions such as does QoS fit within heterogeneous networks and what is the impact on performance if information traverses different network portions that implement specific QoS schemes.

An ideal book for graduate students, researchers and lecturers. System designers, developers and engineers will also find “QoS Over Heterogeneous Networks” a valuable reference.

The Encyclopedia of World History

The "Langer Encyclopedia," as the professional academics call The Encyclopedia of World History originally edited by the late William L. Langer, is basically a history of everything--and an outstanding reference volume. Want to know why the English called their 10th-century king Ethelred "the Unready"? See page 181. Or what the Ottoman Empire's constitution of 1876 said? See page 531. Or when women in Honduras got the vote? See page 955. This sixth edition, completely updated and revised by a team of scholars led by George Mason University's Peter N. Stearns, packs all it can into a year-by-year and region-by-region chronicle of human life on planet Earth. The book is big, the type is small, and the maps and genealogical tables are excellent. Stearns has added more material on women, leisure activities, and demographics to this edition, and the sections on Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Latin America are much different from the previous version. As if this weren't enough, the book comes with a CD-ROM featuring the complete text and fantastic search capabilities. The Encyclopedia of World History is highly recommended for serious history buffs.

Towards Universal Access Scaling up priority HIV/AIDS interventions in the health sector
Posted: June 23rd, 2008, 12:15pm CEST
Tags  [edit]

The end of 2007 marks an important step in the history of the HIV epidemic. According to the WHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF report Towards Universal Access: Scaling up Priority HIV/AIDS Interventions in the Health Sector, nearly a million more people (950,000) were receiving treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) in low- and middle-income countries by year’s end, bringing the total number of recipients to close to 3 million—a more than seven-fold increase over four years.

The WHO/UNAIDS ‘3 by 5’ initiative, which sought to have 3 million individuals on treatment by 2005, is widely credited with jump-starting the global effort to provide widespread ART access to people in need living in low- and middle-income countries.

In 2007, that target was achieved a scant two years after the 2005 deadline. Not only has the number of people receiving treatment increased dramatically, but the pace of scale-up has also accelerated.

The year 2007 also saw gains in access to interventions designed to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), as well as increased testing and counselling and greater country commitment to male circumcision. An increasing number of children are also benefiting from paediatric ART programmes. At the end of 2007, an estimated 200,000 children were receiving ART compared to 127,000 in 2006 and 75,000 in 2005.

Nevertheless, countries are still far from meeting universal access goals. An estimated 2.5 million people were newly infected with HIV in 2007, and overall, ART coverage still remains low—only 31% of people estimated to be in need of treatment in low- and middle-income countries were receiving it in 2007.

Moreover, weak health systems and, in particular, a critical shortage of health-care personnel and a lack of long-term sustained funding threaten efforts to achieve universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care. At the end of 2007, the gap between required and available funding was estimated to be US$ 8.1 billion. To meet universal access targets, funding will have to more than quadruple to US$ 35 billion in 2010 and to US$ 41 billion in 2015.

How to Know God: The Soul's Journey Into the Mystery of Mysteries
Posted: June 23rd, 2008, 6:21am CEST
Tags  [edit]

God is not a person or a thing but rather a process, according to world-renowned author and spiritual leader Deepak Chopra. The purpose of this ambitious book is to assure readers that anyone can engage in this process--"it isn't a matter of faith, religious teaching, innate goodness, luck or some other mysterious factor," Chopra explains. "Our brains are hardwired to find God." This hardwiring is deftly explored as Chopra lists the seven ways humans know God and how they correspond to the anatomy of our human brains. He devotes a chapter to each of the seven visions of God: "Protector," "Almighty," "God of Peace," "Redeemer," "Creator," "God of Miracles," and "Pure Being--I am." In every chapter he asks and answers the same questions for the readers: "Who am I?" "How do I fit in?" "How do I find God?" The format works well, helping to tame this broad discussion while also illuminating the different personality types that are attracted to these seven different visions.

Fortunately, Chopra is a gifted narrator, able to make human anatomy and quantum physics understandable while also keeping spiritual and metaphysical discussions grounded. As he drifts through the cloudy realms of ESP, telepathy, clairvoyance, miracles, obedience, loyalty, evil, ego, addictions, and mentors, readers can trust that there is a competent pilot at the helm, deftly guiding this excellent book. Plan to take some time with this one. It is perhaps his best yet and as such deserves a slow and steady commitment.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit, Third Edition
Microsoft | 2005 | ISBN: 0735621675 | 1568 pages | PDF | CD 2nd Ed | Total 35 Mb

The definitive resource for installing, managing, and supporting Windows XP Professional-with in-depth technical information and tools from the Microsoft Windows team. Includes new coverage of Windows XP Service Pack 2 and updated security features.

Authors: Charlie Russel and Sharon Crawford

(from an Amazon customer review)
Usually when a book is release as a 2nd or 3rd edition, the publisher is just updating the content to reflect the new features or releases of the software. This book is just that and a little bit more.

This book takes apart the XP operating system from stem to stern and everything in between. Taking it from the deployment to remote users to desktop configuration. In most case that would be enough, but here's where the book is updated.

Adding over 200 pages on security, you will find that book is far more than a Resource kit, it may also be used as a study guide for the 70-270 exam.

The book is actually a repost. The CD is from the 2nd Edition and has not been posted here before. I was unable to locate the CD of the 3rd Ed so would be grateful to anyone who can supply a link, though the 2nd Ed CD should have all you need. It contains:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit, 2nd Ed (installation, to be read by IE5 or later. Thanks Microsoft for forcing us to use IE to read it.)
A mystery "Bonus Book" which turns out to be Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Automating and Customizing Installation (PDF) - not much use if you aren't into servers.
A very good set of tools, probably the best part of the CD. Includes sleep.exe for inserting delays, etc.

Access 2007 VBA Bible (with source code)

Author(s) : Helen Feddema
Publisher : Wiley
Year : May 2007
ISBN 10 : 047004702X
ISBN 13 : 9780470047026
Language : English
Pages : 720
File type : PDF
Size : 25.6 MB  (book + source code)

This book is a fairly comprehensive resource on writing VBA code to exchange data among the main Office applications (Access, Word, Excel, and Outlook), using Access as the central application for storing data, and using the other applications for producing attractively formatted documents of various types.

By the time you have completed the Access 2007 VBA Bible, you will be well-prepared to write VBA Automation code that uses your Access data to produce Word letters, mailing labels and other documents (without the overhead of mail merge), to create Excel worksheets and PivotCharts, and to create Outlook appointments, mail messages, contacts, and journal items, with or without attachments. Additionally, you will be able to synchronize contact data (both ways) between Access and Outlook.

The book is written for the Access/Office developer or power user who is familiar with working with Office applications (particularly Access) in the interface, and has at least a basic familiarity with writing VBA code, but needs more information on how to write Automation code to work with Word, Excel, and Outlook objects, so as to be able to use each Office application for creating the documents that are its specialty, while storing most of the data in Access databases.

To run the sample code in this book, you need a computer capable of running at least Windows XP, and of course you need Office 2007. Because Office 2007 runs fine on Windows XP, you don’t need Windows Vista, but Office 2007 works even better on Vista.

TABLE OF CONTENT:
Chapter 01 - Storing and Displaying Data in Access
Chapter 02 - Creating Word Documents from Access
Chapter 03 - Analyzing Data with Excel
Chapter 04 - Organizing and Communicating with Outlook
Chapter 05 - Working with Access Data
Chapter 06 - Working with Word Documents and Templates
Chapter 07 - Working with Excel Worksheets
Chapter 08 - Working with Outlook Items
Chapter 09 - Working with Files and Folders
Chapter 10 - Working with External Data
Chapter 11 - Synchronizing Access and Outlook Contacts

Catherine Cookson - Our Kate
Posted: June 20th, 2008, 9:44pm CEST
Tags  [edit]

Catherine Cookson is known and loved for her vibrant and earthy novels set in and around the North-East of England, past and present. Her autobiography makes plain how it is she who knows her background and her characters so well. The "Our Kate" of the title is not Catherine Cookson, but her mother, around whom the autobiography revolves. Despite her faults, Kate emerges a warm and loveable human figure. "Our Kate" is an honest statement about living with hardship and poverty, seen through the eyes of a highly sensitive child and woman, whose zest for life and unquenchable sense of humour won through to make Catherine Cookson the warm, engaging and human writer she is today.

Hitler versus Stalin:

The Second World War on the Eastern Front In Photographs Illustrates every aspect of the Eastern Front campaigns, from the early Blitzkrieg successes of the Nazis through the turning point of Stalingrad to the climactic fall of Berlin.
It presents a panoramic view of this war using previously unpublished photographs from Russian collections, augmented by Images from Germanarchives.
lt Is not a book of posed propaganda triages but the viscera of life, death, survival, battle, the home front, friend and foe.

Written by the world's leading authority on the subject, the late Professor John Erickson, and his wife, LJublca,Hltler versus Stalin: The Second World War on the Eastern Front in Photographs Is a moving, authoritative and unforgettable account of the conflict that sealed the fate of Nazi Germany and shaped the world's postwar history.

FOREWORD
On Sunday morning 22 June 1941, Adolf Hitler launched the greatest land campaign in world history:
Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union.
This was total war without match, stupefying in its dimension, horrendous in its cruelty, harrowing in its degradation.
Hitler committed his armies to a war of subjugation, to an ideological crusade against "Jewish-Bolshevism" and to racial war against Slav "subhumans".
In the course of "The Great Patriotic War 1941-1945", the Soviet Union mobilized 29,574,900 men.
Wartime turnover in manpower amounted to 21,700,000.
During 1,418 days of barbarized warfare, bereft of any legal or moral constraints, the Red Army's battlefield losses were more than half those 21 million, 11,440,100 men put permanently out of action.
Almost one million men were variously convicted:
376,300 charged with desertion and 422,700 sentenced to service in penal battalions, or strafbats, assigned to the most dangerous sectors.
Civilians were not spared.
German rule in occupied territory took the lives of some 16,350,000 citizens, shot, starved, neglected, or
murdered in concentration camps.
More than two million were deported for slave labour in the Reich.
Soviet soldiers and civilians shared a combined death toll of 27-28 million souls.
Each minute of this war cost 9-10 lives, each hour 587, each day 14,000.
Savage partisan warfare and ferocious German retribution compounded the horrors.
Huge hunks of fronts disintegrated.
Entire armies vanished, some to reappear later, others with fatal damage.
Between 1941 and 1943, the Wehrmacht destroyed almost a third of 570 Soviet rifle divisions.
The Red Army finally destroyed, disabled or captured 607 Axis divisions, at great cost to itself in men and machines: 96,500 tanks, 106,400 aircraft and 317,000 guns.
Anglo-American armies fighting in North Africa, Italy and Western Europe destroyed 176 enemy divisions.
What Boris Pasternak called the "naked power of evil" had been unleashed.
The cost to perpetrator and victim of first suppressing and then exorcising it was visited on the wartime generation and also on their descendants, mindful of inconsolable grief and ineluctable sorrows.

Liquid Filtration
Posted: June 20th, 2008, 12:11pm CEST
Tags  [edit]

This book is a state-of-the-art review of liquid filtration in the chemical process and allied industries. Interpretations of the phenomenological observations of the hydrodynamics of filtration are given in the hopes of establishing more theoretical and generalized bases of design methodology. Specific design and selection criteria are reviewed, and typical industrial problems and their solutions are presented.

Liquid Filtration is a fundamental unit operation extensively practiced throughout the chemical process, petroleum, and allied industries. It involves the separation, removal, and collection of a discrete phase of matter existing in a dispersed or colloidal state in suspension. This separation is most often performed in the presence of a complex media structure in which physical, physiochemical and/or electrokinetic forces interact.

So Much Blood by Simon Brett AB

So Much Blood
(The second book in the Charles Paris series)
Charles Paris returns again, in a fringe show at the Edinburgh Festival, with another nubile girl to provoke him, and his accommodating wife to console him, and a gory murder to challenge him in So Much Blood.
Edinburgh and the Festival are both background and foreground with Charles, flitting between a re-visualized Midsummer Night's Dream, a mixed-media satire, a late-night revue, and his own one-man show on Thomas Hood-and with a fading pop star as the first victim, a bomb scare in Holyrood Palace, and a suicide leap from the top of the Rock. Charles copes splendidly with the Festival, with his affair with the girl with the navy eyes, and with a most complex murder investigation.

Publisher: Osprey Publishing (September 2007) | ISBN: 9781846032011 | PDF | 14,3 MB | 96 pages

New book from Osprey Aircraft of the Aces series!

This is the history of the best Allied fighter-destroyer of World War I and the pilots who flew it. Numerous ace teams earned the 'Biff' grudging respect from its German opponents, as the crews operated the plane not as a standard two-seater, but as a single-seat with a 'sting in the tail' in the form of a rear gunner with a Lewis machine gun. This book charts the development of the plane from its inauspicious beginnings to the revised model operating with a new kind of tactics. Numerous first-hand accounts and combat reports give a fascinating insight into the combat experiences of the pilots themselves.

Tags  [edit]

Sample preparation is an essential step in many analyses. This book approaches the topic of sample preparation in chromatography in a methodical way, viewing it as a logical connection between sample collection and analytical chromatography. Providing a guide for choosing the appropriate sample preparation for a given analysis, this book describes various ways to process the sample, explaining the principle, discussing the advantages and disadvantages, describing the applicability to different types of samples, and showing the fitness to specific chromatographic determinations.

The first part of the book contains an overview of sample preparation showing its relation to sample collection and to the core chromatographic analysis. The second part covers procedures that do not use chemical modifications of the analyte and includes methods for sample dissolution, concentration and cleanup designed mainly for modifying the initial matrix of the sample. This part starts with conventional separations such as filtration and distillation and finishes with more advanced techniques such as solid phase extraction and electroseparations. The third part gives a description of the chemical modifications that can be performed on a sample either for fractionation purposes or to improve a specific property of the analyte. This part includes derivatizations, polymer chemical degradations, and pyrolysis.

Raman and SERS Investigations of Pharmaceuticals
Posted: June 14th, 2008, 11:10am CEST
Tags  [edit]

Over the last several years it has become apparent to most researchers that interdisciplinary research is the key to success in the sciences’ future. The present book exemplifies such interdisciplinary work. Thus, some new derivatives have been prepared by chemists and consecutively analyzed by physicists in order to better understand their physical-chemical properties for future tests to be performed by pharmacists. The book consists of an introductory section and other eight chapters. First, the fundamentals of infrared, Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and those of the theoretical methods employed for the vibrational prediction modes are highlighted. The SERS investigations illustrated in the following chapters are focused on different kinds of drugs: tranquilizers and sedatives, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins, drugs with anti-bacterial properties, etc. Since there is an increased interest in designing highly effective and controllable SERS-active substrates, a few newly developed substrates that could contribute to a deeper understanding and knowledge of the adsorption behavior of various types of molecules of pharmaceutical and

medical interest are also presented.

Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults

Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults
Pdf | 384 pages | 1.6 mb

Myths about Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADD/ADHD)

abound. This disorder frequently goes unrecognized, and even when diagnosed may be

inadequately treated. In this up-to-date and clearly written book, a leading expert

offers a new way of understanding ADD. Drawing on recent findings in neuroscience and a

rich variety of case histories from his own clinical practice, Dr. Thomas E. Brown

describes what ADD syndrome is, how it can be recognized at different ages, and how it

can best be treated.

This is the first book to address the perplexing question about ADD: how can individuals,

some very bright, be chronically unable to “pay attention,” yet be able to focus very

well on specific tasks that strongly interest them? Dr. Brown disputes the “willpower”

explanation and explains how inherited malfunctions of the brain’s management system

prevent some people from being able to deal adequately with challenging tasks of

childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. His book is an authoritative and practical guide

for physicians and psychologists, parents and teachers, and the 7 to 9 percent of persons

who suffer from ADD/ADHD.

Java In A Nutshell, 5th Edition
Posted: June 10th, 2008, 10:36am CEST
Tags  [edit]

With more than 700,000 copies sold to date, "Java in a Nutshell" from O'Reilly is clearly the favorite resource amongst the legion of developers and programmers using Java technology. And now, with the release of the 5.0 version of Java, O'Reilly has given the book that defined the "in a Nutshell" category another impressive tune-up.

In this latest revision, readers will find "Java in a Nutshell," 5th Edition, does more than just cover the extensive changes implicit in 5.0, the newest version of Java. It's undergone a complete makeover--in scope, size, and type of coverage--in order to more closely meet the needs of the modern Java programmer.

To wit, "Java in a Nutshell," 5th Edition now places less emphasis on coming to Java from C and C++, and adds more discussion on tools and frameworks. It also offers new code examples to illustrate the working of APIs, and, of course, extensive coverage of Java 5.0. But faithful readers take comfort: it still hasn't lost any of its core elements that made it such a classic to begin with.

This handy reference gets right to the heart of the program with an accelerated introduction to the Java programming language and its key APIs--ideal for developers wishing to start writing code right away. And, as was the case in previous editions, Java in a Nutshell, 5th Edition is once again chock-full of poignant tips, techniques, examples, and practical advice. For as long as Java has existed, "Java in a Nutshell" has helped developers maximize the capabilities of the program's newest versions. And this latest edition is no different.

The Female Orgasm Black Book
Posted: June 10th, 2008, 8:32am CEST
Tags  [edit]

Oh Boy... We're at it again. Covering sex and intimacy topics that seem to be considered hush-hush.
Do you believe your girlfriend or wife when she claims to have an orgasm? How can you know for certain that she's not faking?

Here are some surprising facts about female orgasm:

  1. 70% of women have NEVER had an orgasm with a man.
  2. 25% of men will get turned down by their lovers over half the time. These men have women who think sex is a chore.
  3. Nearly 50% of men have partners that will NEVER ask for sex (would you ask for something that doesn’t give you any pleasure?)
  4. 92% of women will FAKE ORGASMS just to “get it over with”.

It’s obvious that what most men are doing simply isn’t working.
If you have never given your partner an orgasm, and you don’t know how… Lee Jenkins has created the Female Orgasm Black Book for men and women, but it is especially valuable for caring boyfriends and husbands who want a no-nonsense, step-by-step plan for bringing explosive sexual pleasures to their partners. You do want that, don't you?

The “Black Book” explains the female orgasm, A-to-Z, with sex tips, checklists and examples of “orgasm routines” you can use to bring your partner to an orgasm (or multiple orgasms).

Here's just a peak at the great information that Lee gives you in the Female Orgasm Black Book:

  1. Why being a “pick up artist” doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be a “Stud” in bed!
  2. How to re-ignite the white-hot passion of any long-term relationship!
  3. The number one reason women can’t have orgasms…even if you’re using every trick in the book…and…what to do about it!
  4. How to tell if she’s faking an orgasm on you and How to tell if she’s having a real orgasm!
  5. A simple “shortcut” to knowing exactly how she likes to be touched! (This takes the guesswork out of foreplay)
  6. How to create a setting in your home that will make her want to have sex!
  7. The 10 best sex positions that will give her an orgasm
  8. How to train your woman to be more orgasmic, and want sex more often!
  9. The most common female orgasm problems…and what to do about it
  10. 18 hidden signs that reveal if a woman is really “turned on”…or…if she’s just faking it! (most men don’t have a clue about what “signals” a woman can’t stop sending out…which…always reveal the honest truth).
  11. How to make heart-pounding intimacy last forever!

Roadmap to Strategic HR: Turning a Great Idea into a Business Reality
Posted: June 9th, 2008, 1:02pm CEST
Tags  [edit]

Foreword by Dave Ulrich For all the theories and talk about making human resources a strategic component of business, in most organizations it's still viewed as a support function -- and a costly one at that. This book presents a nine-step roadmap to making HR a true strategic partner, drawn from the author's years of experience at major organizations. Christensen simplifies HR hierarchies by aligning myriad functions with five fundamental processes, and answers key questions including: * How do we get line management engaged and build a partnership between

managers and HR? * How do we acknowledge, address, and overcome weaknesses in HR functions and processes? * How do we resolve tensions between generalists and specialists so that they can join forces toward common goals? The book includes a detailed account of how the roadmap was implemented at Hallmark. This case study shows how a real HR department reached an often-stated but rarely-achieved goal: that! of becoming an indispensable partner and driver of company growth. Readers will find much food for both thought and action in this revelatory book.

Cocoa(R) Programming for Mac(R) OS X (2nd Edition)
ISBN-10: 0321213149

Title: Cocoa® Programming for Mac® OS X (2nd Edition)
Author: Aaron Hillegass
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional; 2 edition (April 30, 2004)
480 pages
PDF

There's a reason that a large slice of the open-source movement has
defected from running Linux on its laptops to running Mac OS X.
The reason is the Unix core that underlies Mac OS X, and the development
tools that run on that core. Cocoa makes it easy to create very slick
Mac OS X interfaces for software (as well as to create applications
in a hurry), and this new edition of Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X
does an excellent job of teaching its readers how to put a Cocoa face
on top of code (Objective-C code almost exclusively). If you know
something about C and/or C++ programming and want to apply your skills
to the Mac, this is precisely the book you want.
Author Aaron Hillegass teaches a Cocoa class, and his book reads like a
demonstration-driven lecture in a computer lab. That is, the book takes a
heavily example-centric approach to its subject, beginning with simple
announcement windows and proceeding to cover the more advanced controls
and object-oriented features of Cocoa and Objective-C. Throughout, he hops
back and forth between descriptions of the goal to be accomplished,
listings of the code that does the job, and instructions on how to use
the Mac OS X development tools to speed the development process.

Drugs-From Discovery to Approval
Posted: June 9th, 2008, 8:20am CEST
Tags  [edit]

Statistics show that out of five thousand compounds with initial promise, five will go into human clinical trials, and only one will become an approved drug. This tiny fraction illustrates the huge complexities involved in bringing a drug to market, a process that brings together scientific research,

medical ethics, business, and various regulatory agencies.
Drugs-From Discovery to Approval presents a clear, step-by-step overview of the entire process. Using simple language, this comprehensive guide introduces basic concepts, then moves on to discuss disease target selection and the discovery processes for both small and large molecule drugs. Subsequent chapters explain preclinical studies, clinical trials, regulatory issues, good manufacturing practices (GMPs), and perspectives on the future. Coverage also includes:
* A helpful listing of current FDA and European guidelines
* A special section on regulatory authorities and processes in Japan and China
* Rich illustrations throughout, including more than ninety figures and tables
* Useful appendices on the history of drug discovery and development
* Representative examples of drug mechanisms in action
Written for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry, and readily accessible for students of pharmacy or medicine and others interested in drug discovery, Drugs-From Discovery to Approval represents a practical and approachable reference on this important process.

Helping Your Child Series
The Helping Your Child publication series aims to provide parents with the tools and information necessary to help their children succeed in school and life. These booklets feature practical lessons and activities to help their school aged and preschool children master reading, understand the value of homework and develop the skills and values necessary to achieve and grow.

Helping Your Child Learn History
With activities for children in preschool through grade 5
The booklet is designed to help families prepare their children to achieve the lifelong task of finding their place in history by helping them learn what shaped the world into which they were born. Employing the latest research, the booklet is largely comprised of activities that can be experienced at home or in the community for children in preschool through grade 5, yet also features information about the basics of history; practical suggestions for how to work with teachers and schools to help children succeed in school; and a list of federal sources, helpful Web sites and suggested books for parents and children

Helping Your Child Learn Science
Fun Activities to Learn and Understand Science
Every day is filled with opportunities to learn science—without expensive chemistry sets or books. Parents don't need degrees in chemistry or physics to help their children learn science. All that is needed is a willingness to observe and learn with them, and, above all, to make an effort and take the time to nurture their natural curiosity. This booklet provides parents of children ages 3 through 10 with information, tools and activities they can use in the home and community to help their child develop an interest in the sciences and learn about the world around them.

Helping Your Child Learn Math
Our increasingly technological world demands strong skills in mathematics, not only in the workforce but also in everyday life, and these demands will only increase over the lifetimes of our children. The major portion of this booklet is made up of fun activities that parents can use with children from preschool age through grade 5 to strengthen their math skills and build strong positive attitudes toward math.
Helping Your Child Become a Reader
Other than helping your children to grow up healthy and happy, the most important thing that you can do for them is to help them develop their reading skills. This booklet offers pointers on how to build the language skills of young children, and includes a list of typical language accomplishments for different age groups, suggestions for books, and resources for children with reading problems or learning disabilities

lot of the models in this book is 2D and thus you can fold and send as presents or send it as a self made card. The result is very attractive. Some of it looks good on a dinner table when you have guests for special occasions.

I like the spectacularly beautiful stars, boxes and presents. The stars looks attractive when they form part of a card send to a love one.

All these models looks good when used to decorating your home.

The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the reference
tool you need to distinguish those herbal products that have been
clinically tested from those for which there is little or no real
evidence that substantiates or disputes their claims of efficacy.
This essential volume provides a snapshot of over 160 herbal products
that have been tested in clinical trials. Details of the products and
the clinical trials they underwent are here --in an easy to read,
at-a-glance format. In addition, the book contains eleven chapters
covering the basic fundamentals of herbal medicine--including history
and regulation, product characterization, standardization, bioavilability,
efficacy, safety, pharmacopoeial monographs, and the motives for conducting
clinical studies both in the United States and Europe.

The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap between wireless networking and service research communities who have hitherto confined their work to their respective specialties.
It not only focuses on the latest technology enablers for speedier and more reliable wireless networking in the home, but also integrates these enablers to provide workable end-to-end solutions from a user’s perspective.
The scope is limited to approaches that will enhance the user’s experience in consuming content in the private and secure setting of the home.

INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKED HOME
MAHBUBUL ALAM, SUDHIR DIXIT, AND RAMJEE PRASAD
Advances in communications technology to seamlessly connect all types of home devices and appliances are driving the vision to create an intelligent home ecosystem.
This would enable control, access, and information sharing among all the devices and thereby a much more enhanced user experience.
The future growth of electronics at home lies in the devices being able to wirelessly communicate among themselves and with one or more universal handheld portable multiradio devices (including other intelligent control points).
Such a control device would be able to control the other wireless-enabled devices in a distributed or centralized manner.
All devices would in the future come with some type of a radio interface built into them. One could potentially conceive the giant intelligent “home system” as being distributed but connected in a modular fashion over a large-area wireless infrastructure.

Dependence Analysis (Loop Transformation for Restructuring Compilers)

Dependence Analysis (Loop Transformation for Restructuring Compilers) ebook for free download.

Dependence Analysis may be considered to be the second edition of the author's 1988 book, Dependence Analysis for Supercomputing. It is, however, a completely new work that subsumes the material of the 1988 publication. This book is the third volume in the series Loop Transformations for Restructuring Compilers. This series has been designed to provide a complete mathematical theory of transformations that can be used to automatically change a sequential program containing FORTRAN-like do loops into an equivalent parallel form. In Dependence Analysis, the author extends the model to a program consisting of do loops and assignment statements, where the loops need not be sequentially nested and are allowed to have arbitrary strides. In the context of such a program, the author studies, in detail, dependence between statements of the program caused by program variables that are elements of arrays. Dependence Analysis is directed toward graduate and undergraduate students, and professional writers of restructuring compilers. The prerequisite for the book consists of some knowledge of programming languages, and familiarity with calculus and graph theory. No knowledge of linear programming is required.

Get to the Top on Google

Tips and Techniques to Get Your Site to the Top of the Search Engine Rankings and Stay There
Written in a clear, non-technical, style by a leading expert in SEO (search engine optimization), GTTTOG explains techniques and strategies proven to return higher search engine rankings and sales.
It addresses all aspects of search engine marketing and includes an assessment of the impact of Web 2.0 on Internet search strategies.

Search engine optimization (or SEO for short) is the art of getting your website to the top of the search rankings.
Why would you want to get to the top on Google?
Well, here is my elevator pitch for why SEO (and this book) could be the best investment you ever make in your website and your business:

G Search engines are the way in which 90% of people locate the internet resources they need and Google has a 75% market share in Europe and North America.
The Google brand is now rated as the most powerful in the world and, within three years, the company is
expected to be the largest advertiser (by revenue) in the world.
My approach focuses on Google because it’s the most important, but includes tips on other search engines where relevant.
G 84% of searchers never make it past the bottom of page two of Google and 65% of people never click on paid (or “sponsored”) results.
Being at the top of the nonpaid (or “organic”) search results is a make-or-break mission for the modern business in a world ever more dominated by the internet.
G Around 15% of all sales in the British economy are now completed online, and price comparison service uSwitch predicts that internet sales will make up 40% of all purchases by the year 2020.
The numbers are similar in all the developed countries of the word, including the United States.
G In this book I share with you my seven-step approach to search engine optimization and website promotion.

This proven methodology is the very same process I use with all my clients (large or small, ranging from Amazon and Microsoft to the smallest high-street store) and contains all the tips and tricks you need to achieve top rankings. The rest is down to you:
your effort, vigilance, and determination.

2 Foreword
G Whether you have a new website or a long-established internet presence, there will be much in this book to challenge your thinking: not just how to promote your business but the very nature of your proposition online.

The book is designed to be accessible for the beginner but comprehensive enough for the skilled marketer.
You will be guided but not patronized.
G Throughout the book I use a case study to illustrate the seven steps.
This helps you check your understanding and more readily apply the techniques to your own business.
I also throw in six months of free membership to my SEO Expert Forum, so you can ask me questions and get direct help if you are struggling.
G I have set out to write the most complete and up-to-date guide to SEO on the market today.
Unlike other, earlier books on the subject, this guide covers the emerging fields of Web 2.0 optimization,
local search optimization, and the future of search itself (including emerging competitors to Google and alternative search models).

Fluid-Structure Interaction: Modelling, Simulation, Optimisation (Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering)

Fluid-Structure Interaction: Modelling, Simulation, Optimisation (Lecture Notes in Computational Science and Engineering) ebook for free download.

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), that is interactions of some movable or deformable structure with an internal or surrounding fluid flow, are among the most important and, with respect to both modelling and computational issues, the most challenging multi-physics problems. The variety of FSI occurrences is abundant and ranges from tent-roofs to micropumps, from parachutes via airbags to blood flow in arteries. This volume of LNCSE contains a collection of papers presented at the International Workshop on FSI held in October 2005 in Hohenwart and organized by DFG's Research Unit 493 "FSI: Modelling, Simulation, and Optimization". The papers address partitioned and monolithic coupling approaches, methodical issues and applications, and discuss FSI from the mathematical, informatical, and engineering point of view.

Inventing and Delivering Its Future (The MIT Sloan School of Management 50th Anniversary)

Management: Inventing and Delivering Its Future (The MIT Sloan School of Management 50th Anniversary) ebook for free download.

The MIT Sloan School of Management, as conceived by the legendary General Motors chairman Alfred P. Sloan, was founded in 1952 to draw on the scientific and technical resources of MIT and approach the problems of management with the rigorous research practices for which MIT was famous. Fifty years later, the Sloan School gathered international leaders in business and management, MIT faculty, students, and alumni to address again the basic principles that should guide business and management. This book presents the papers prepared by student-faculty teams, speeches by business and world leaders, and summaries of the discussions from this special convocation; taken together, they offer a guide to the future of management based on the hallmarks of MIT and Sloan--creativity and innovation. The topics considered coalesced around three main themes. First, and paramount, is the necessity of building and maintaining trust by means of openness, transparency, and accountability; this was addressed in speeches by Kofi Annan and Carly Fiorina and exemplified by the case study presented of Nike?s efforts to rebuild the trust of customers. The increasingly complex conditions of the modern global economy emerged as another recurring theme, as the participants considered the effect of the growing spectrum of stakeholders on issues of corporate governance. The third common theme was the inescapability of technological and scientific change, from the Internet as a marketing tool to the organizational impact of information technology.

The Road to Safety

Young Drivers: The Road to Safety ebook for free download.

Traffic crashes are the single greatest killer of those aged 15-24 in OECD countries, killing about 25 000 people per year. The situation can be assumed to be equally grim in non-OECD countries. In many countries, about 20% to 30% of total fatal crashes involve a young driver. For every young driver killed, a likely 1.3 or more other people also die in the same crashes. Thus, young drivers pose a greater risk than other drivers to themselves, their passengers and other road users. This problem imposes substantial costs on individuals, families and societies. This report provides an overview of the scope of the problem of young driver risk, its primary causes and concrete options to combat it.

Saving Our World by Seeking Others

Space on Earth: Saving Our World by Seeking Others ebook for free download.

Many environmentalists think going into space detracts from solving problems here on Earth. Many astrophysicists feel environmentalism hampers their exploration and settlement of space. Actually environmentalism and space exploration have one and the same objective, argues leading astro-biologist Professor Charles Cockell: to ensure humanity has a home. Cockell calls for a fusion of the two movements as the only way forward. The technologies we develop to live sustainably on Earth, such as wind and solar power, will also establish humanity in space. The exploration of space will provide new resources and skills for the protection of the Earth's environment. For example, studying extreme environments on Earth is helping us to look for life on Mars and satellites orbiting Earth are helping track hurricanes and protect people from natural disasters. There are many books on environmentalism and many on space faring. Space On Earth is the first to provide a new vision of humanity's future bringing these two goals together.

Tags  [edit]

This innovative text offers a new way of understanding public relations and other types of strategic communication. Following the pragmatic, in-depth approach of the first edition, this text presents a step-by-step unfolding of the planning process most often used in public relations practice. Drawing from his experience in professional practice and in the classroom, author Ronald D. Smith walks readers through the critical steps for the formative research, strategic and tactical planning, and plan evaluation phases of the process.

Complete with clear explanations, relevant examples, and practical exercises, this text identifies and discusses the various decision points and options in the development of a communication program. Both classic public relations situations and current, timely events are presented in cases and examples throughout. This second edition offers new examples and updates on research, and provides new discussions on critical topics, including stereotyping and statistics.

As a classroom text or a resource for professional practice, this volume provides a model that can be adapted to fit specific circumstances and used to improve effectiveness and creativity in communication planning. It serves as an accessible and understandable

guide to field-tested procedures, offering practical insights that apply to public relations campaigns and case studies coursework.

The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies

The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the reference tool you need to distinguish those herbal products that have been clinically tested from those for which there is little or no real evidence that substantiates or disputes their claims of efficacy.
This essential volume provides a snapshot of 160 herbal products that have been tested in clinical trials.

Details of the products and the clinical trials they underwent are here in an easy-to-read, at-a-glance format.

Each botanical profile in The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies contains a summary section (table, text and references), followed by product information and clinical trials for that particular product.
An evaluation of the strength of the evidence from the trials, along with the context for therapeutics is included to give you a complete picture of each remedy and its usefulness or lack thereof.
If there is more than one product based on a particular botanical then the trials are grouped according to the product.

This valuable book also makes purchasing easy with manufacturer contact information.
With over 30 individual botanicals and 10 multi-ingredient formulas, 160 products and 360 clinical studies, The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the book you need to make an informed selection of herbal products.

Not only does it list proprietary herbal products that have been tested in controlled clinical studies and provide a rating of the quality of those trials, but, it also describes the fundamentals of herbal medicine, including regulation, characterization, standardization, bioavailability, efficacy, safety, pharmacopoeial monographs as well as incentives, or lack of incentive, for US and European manufacturers to conduct clinical studies.

All of the clinical trials in The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies were rated as to their Level of Evidence according to a system designed by Tieraona Low Dog, MD, Chair of the United States Pharmacopoeia Dietary Supplements/Botanicals Expert Panel and a member of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
The reviewers of the clinical trials included Karriem Ali, MD; Richard Aranda, MD; Elliot Fagelman, MD; Mary Hardy, MD; David Heber, MD, PhD, FACP, FACN; John Trimmer Hicks, MD, FACP, FACR; Hannah Kim, MD; Franklin C. Lowe, MD, MPH; Richard D. O’Connor, MD; Barry S. Oken, M.D; Lynn Shinto, ND; and Keith Wesnes, PhD.

Contributors to the chapters describing the fundamentals of herbal medicine include:
The late Dr. Varro Tyler, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Purdue University and co-author of Tyler’s Honest Herbal, Rational Phytotherapy, and Tyler’s Herbs of Choice
Loren Israelsen, JD, president of the LDI group

Design & Development of Biological, Chemical, Food and Pharmaceuticral Products
Posted: June 2nd, 2008, 6:07am CEST
Tags  [edit]

Design and Development of Biological, Chemical, Food and Pharmaceutical Products has been developed from course material from the authors’ course in Chemical and Biochemical Product Design which has been running at the Technical University Denmark for years. The book draws on the authors’ years of experience in academia and industry to provide an accessible introduction to this field, approaching product development as a subject in its own right rather than a sideline of process engineering

In this subject area, practical experience is the key to learning and this textbook provides examples and techniques to help the student get the best out of their projects. Design and Development of Biological, Chemical, Food and Pharma Products aims to aid students in developing good working habits for product development. Students are challenged with examples of real problems that they might encounter as engineers.

Written in an informal, student-friendly tone, this unique book includes examples of real products and experiences from real companies to bring the subject alive for the student as well as placing emphasis on problem solving and team learning to set a foundation for a future in industry. The book includes an introduction to the subject of Colloid Science, which is important in product development, but neglected in many curricula. Knowledge of engineering calculus and basic physical chemistry as well as basic inorganic and organic chemistry are assumed.

An invaluable text for students of product design in chemical engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences and product development.

Uses many examples and case studies drawn from a range of industries.
Approaches product development as a subject in its own right rather than a sideline of process engineering, Emphasizes a problem solving and team learning approach. Assumes some knowledge of calculus, basic physical chemistry and basic transport phenomena as well as some inorganic and organic chemistry.

Build Your Own AJAX Web Applications

Build Your Own AJAX Web Applications Book Details Author: Matthew Eernisse Publisher: SitePoint Pty, Limited Pub. Date: June 2006 ISBN-13: 9780975841945 297pp

Book Description

AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a new approach for developing Web applications. It essentially permits users to interact with a Webpage without forcing a slow & tedious reload of the entire page after every action.

This practical hands-on guide for first-time AJAX users will walk you through building multiple AJAX applications, with each application highlighting a different strength and use of AJAX.

Applications include a chess game, an app for refining searches on Amazon/Google/eBay without reloading an entire page and a blog system that uses drag-n-drop features.

Throughout the text, the author stresses usability, accessibility, and graceful degradation for older, less-capable web browsers.
