under their radical, the dictionary encourages the student to link characters according to their phonetic. The

Potential readers should follow the author's lead and ignore the subtitle of this survey of the history of science in Europe and America, or they may be disappointed. Amsterdam-based writer Crump (Solar Eclipse; The Anthropology of Numbers) does discuss the evolution of scientific equipment, but the book is centered around the scientists, not their instruments. Crump begins with mankind's discovery of how to create fire and ends with SQUIDs, superconducting quantum interference devices. In between, there is chemistry, astronomy and 20th-century physics. The sections on advances in electricity and energy measurement make for particularly fascinating reading. Overall, however, Crump's book would have been more successful if he had followed the lead of his subtitle. He attempts to cover too much, and inevitably there are striking gaps and imbalances that leave the final product feeling scattered. (Only a few paragraphs are devoted to radio and redshift, for instance, while Crump dallies over Wernher von Braun's experiences at the end of World War II.) It might be argued that English scientists receive more attention than those of other countries, although the adept sketch of Dmitri Mendeleyev's career should be required reading for chemistry students. Crump's prose is generally reader-friendly, and mathematical and chemical notation are kept to a minimum. This will make a useful addition to home libraries. 16 pages of photographs and appendixes not seen by PW.

We live in an aging world. Illnesses that are prevalent and cause significant morbidity and mortality
in older people will consume an increasing share of health care resources. One such illness is depression.
This illness has a particularly devastating impact in the elderly because it is often undiagnosed or inadequately
treated. Depression not only has a profound impact on quality of life but it is associated with an increased risk
of mortality from suicide and vascular disease. In fact for every medical illness studied, e.g. heart disease,
diabetes, cancer, individuals who are depressed have a worse prognosis. Research has illuminated the
physiological and behavioral effects of depression that accounts for these poor outcomes. The deleterious
relationship between depression and other illnesses has changed the concept of late-life depression from a
"psychiatric disorder" that is diagnosed and treated by a psychiatrist to a common and serious disorder that is the
responsibility of all physicians who care for patients over the age of 60. This is the first volume devoted to the
epidemiology, phenomenology, psychobiology, treatment and consequences of late-life depression. Although much
has been written about depressive disorders, the focus has been primarily on the illness as experienced in younger
adults. The effects of aging on the brain, the physiological and behavioral consequences of recurrent depression,
and the impact of other diseases common in the elderly, make late-life depression a distinct entity. There is a compelling
need for a separate research program, specialized treatments, and a book dedicated to this disorder.

This book will be invaluable to psychiatrists, gerontologists, clinical psychologists, social workers,
students, trainees, and others who care for individuals over the age of sixty.

Is this book useful for Macintosh users? Absolutely. Although the bulk of this book is devoted to showing you how to link Windows-based computers to form a network, you can find information about how to network Macintosh computers as well. This book covers the basics of mass spectra, and how to interpret them by hand. While it doesn't really go into modern developments, its certainly a great way to get started thinking about mass spectroscopy in general. Probably most useful for an undergraduates course in spectroscopy, which is where I first came across it. The nice thing is it has lots of exercises for the reader that are actually alot of fun. Does not, unfortunately, address protein identification and sequencing by mass spec at al, so while I recommend this book as a starting point, a biologically oriented reader would best use this book in conjunction with a more protein-specific reference.

Time (trademarked in capitals as TIME) is a weekly American newsmagazine, similar to Newsweek and U.S. News & World Report. A European edition (Time Europe, formerly known as Time Atlantic) is published from London. Time Europe covers the Middle East, Africa and, since 2003, Latin America. An Asian edition (Time Asia) is based in Hong Kong. Time publishes simultaneously in Canada, with separate advertising. The South Pacific edition, covering Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, is based in Sydney. In some advertising campaigns, the magazine has suggested that through a backronym the letters Time stand for "The International Magazine of Events".

Richard Stengel is the current managing editor of Time; Priscilla Painton, Adi Ignatius and Michael Elliott are the current deputy managing editors.

Khalid Sayood's textbook-style Introduction to Data Compression is the definitive guide to all kinds of compression schemes. Early chapters establish the mathematics involved in basic compression techniques, including lossless and lossy compression as well as the fundamentals of information theory that lay the groundwork for common forms of compression. (The book contains all the relevant formulas, although those who don't need such mathematical detail will still be able to understand the book.)

A good portion of the book examines various compression schemes, their strengths and weaknesses, and what content they work best for. Introduction to Data Compression begins with lossless compression schemes, which lose no information during the compression/decompression process. Huffman Coding, a well-established compression scheme, and arithmetic and dictionary coding also receive excellent treatment. In addition, the author takes on lossless compression for images.

For lossy compression, Sayood discusses schemes that use quantization, where a range of values is compressed in some way. He also describes scalar, vector, and differential encoding and fractal compression. A final chapter looks at video encryption (which often combines techniques from earlier chapters). Many of the compression schemes include examples from image and sound files, but the book considers a wide variety of video schemes too. This rich and confidently written text collates a lot of research and can serve as both textbook and source for designers who need a readable and mathematically solid introduction to data compression.
