Philosophy: 100 Essential Thinkers
# Language: English
# ISBN-10: 1592700160
# ISBN-13: 978-1592700165
This book takes a thematic and then chronological approach to its subject. The philosophers are first
grouped by their school of thought, clearly outlined on the contents page. Within each division, Stokes
includes several examples, showing the progression of that philosophy over time. For example, existentialism
is traced from Kierkegaard through Heidegger and Sartre to de Beauvoir. Each entry is two pages long, and
includes a black-and-white illustration or photo of the philosopher. No biographical information is included
beyond a general comment about nationality or education. Instead, readers are given a summary of each
individual's contribution to the "science" of philosophy. There are cross-references throughout, indicated by
boldface type. The glossary seeks to clarify some of the more difficult terms and concepts. This is not a work
for beginners; both the vocabulary and content make it appropriate for more mature readers. Overall, however,
it is a valuable introduction to some of the world's great thinkers.

Encyclopedia of the Solar System
Edited By: Lucy-Ann McFadden, Paul Weissman, Torrence Johnson
Publisher: Academic Press; 2 edition
Language: English
Number of Pages: 987
PDF: 51.6 MB
ISBN-10: 0120885891
ISBN-13: 978-0120885893
An arresting jacket painting by Brad Greenwood shows the solar system as it would be seen from the sun. The 56 contributors to this one-volume encyclopedia--all specialists in solar system science--describe the system from the galaxy inward to the sun and then outward through the planets. They discuss also comets, asteroids, missions of exploration to the planets, and the search for planets outside the solar system. The audience the editors have aimed at includes teachers, students, advanced amateurs, astronomers who do not specialize in the solar system, and professionals in other scientific and technical fields. Such a person could usefully read the volume straight through or plunge at once into any of the topics. Indeed, a reader who knows little about the solar system could do the same; she would end up knowing a lot.
Long before Galileo published his discoveries about Jupiter, lunar craters, and the Milky Way in the Starry Messenger in 1610, people were fascinated with the planets and stars around them. That interest continues today, and scientists are making new discoveries at an astounding rate. Ancient lake beds on Mars, robotic spacecraft missions, and new definitions of planets now dominate the news. How can you take it all in? Start with the new Encyclopedia of the Solar System, Second Edition. This self-contained reference follows the trail blazed by the bestselling first edition. It provides a framework for understanding the origin and evolution of the solar system, historical discoveries, and details about planetary bodies and how they interact—and has jumped light years ahead in terms of new information and visual impact. Offering more than 50% new material, the Encyclopedia includes the latest explorations and observations, hundreds of new color digital images and illustrations, and more than 1,000 pages. It stands alone as the definitive work in this field, and will serve as a modern messenger of scientific discovery and provide a look into the future of our solar system.

A Brief History of Science: As Seen Through the Development of Scientific Instruments
Author: Thomas Crump
Number of pages: 425 pages
Publisher: Carroll & Graf Pub.; 1st edition (January 9, 2001)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0786709073
ISBN-13: 978-0786709076
Potential readers should follow the author's lead and ignore the subtitle of this survey of the history of science in Europe and America, or they may be disappointed. Amsterdam-based writer Crump (Solar Eclipse; The Anthropology of Numbers) does discuss the evolution of scientific equipment, but the book is centered around the scientists, not their instruments. Crump begins with mankind's discovery of how to create fire and ends with SQUIDs, superconducting quantum interference devices. In between, there is chemistry, astronomy and 20th-century physics. The sections on advances in electricity and energy measurement make for particularly fascinating reading. Overall, however, Crump's book would have been more successful if he had followed the lead of his subtitle. He attempts to cover too much, and inevitably there are striking gaps and imbalances that leave the final product feeling scattered. (Only a few paragraphs are devoted to radio and redshift, for instance, while Crump dallies over Wernher von Braun's experiences at the end of World War II.) It might be argued that English scientists receive more attention than those of other countries, although the adept sketch of Dmitri Mendeleyev's career should be required reading for chemistry students. Crump's prose is generally reader-friendly, and mathematical and chemical notation are kept to a minimum. This will make a useful addition to home libraries. 16 pages of photographs and appendixes not seen by PW.

Origami to Astonish and Amuse

Language: English
ISBN-10: 0312254040
ISBN-13: 978-0312254049
Jeremy Shafer is one of my favorite creators. His ideas are so original! And the execution is great. This book is a hefty showcase of his work, containing around 80 models.
Scattered throughout the book are "Thoughts behind the fold" segments, containing Jeremy's insights about the design and uses for the model.
The diagrams are excellent (and fun to read!), and there's a B&W photo for every model.
Imagine folding a piece of paper into nail clippers that really work, or a Swiss Army knife that actually opens, or a surfer on a wave that crashes when the surfer is slid forward...There's no need to imagine-this is for real!
In Origami to Astonish and Amuse Jeremy Shafer has taken the art of paper folding in an entirely new direction. Filled with hundreds of entertaining models and folding ideas, ranging from amazingly simple to ridiculously complex, this is origami at its most fun and creative.
About the Author
Jeremy Shafer has been folding for fifteen years and has created hundreds of original models, each folded from one piece of paper, without cutting. He has been published in major origami journals in the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, and has exhibited his work at seven OrigamiUSA conventions. He is a member of the Friends of Origami Center of America and is the editor of the BARF (Bay Area Rapid Folders) newsletter. He lives in Berkeley, California.
