E.L. Lehmann and George Casella, "Theory of Point Estimation"
Springer | ISBN: 0-387-98502-6 | 589 Pages | PDF | 2.6 Mb
This book is concerned with point estimation in Euclidean sample spaces. The first four chapters deal with exact (small-sample) theory, and their approach and organization parallel those of the companion volume, Testing Statistical Hypotheses (TSH). Optimal estimators are derived according to criteria such as unbiasedness, equivariance, and minimaxity, and the material is organized around these criteria. The principal applications are to exponential and group families, and the systematic discussion of the rich body of (relatively simple) statistical problems that fall under these headings constitutes a second major theme of the book.
Since the publication of Theory of Point Estimation, much new work has made it desirable to bring out a second edition. The inclusion of the new material has increased the length of the book from 500 to 600 pages; of the approximately 1000 references about 25% have appeared since.

Martin Bilodeau and David Brenner, "Theory of Multivariate Statistics"
Springer | ISBN: 0-387-98739-8 | 288 Pages | PDF | 1.7 Mb
Our object in writing this book is to present the main results of the modern theory of multivariate statistics to an audience of advanced students who would appreciate a concise and mathematically rigorous treatment of that material. It is intended for use as a textbook by students taking a first graduate course in the subject, as well as for the general reference of interested research workers who will find, in a readable form, developments from recently published work on certain broad topics not otherwise easily accessible, as, for instance, robust inference (using adjusted likelihood ratio tests) and the use of the bootstrap in a multivariate setting. The references contains over 150 entries post-1982. The main development of the text is supplemented by over 135 problems, most of which are original with the authors.

Robert Kaplan and Ellen Kaplan, "The Art of The Infinite: The Pleasures of Mathematics"
Oxford | ISBN: 0-19-514743-X | 324 Pages | PDF | 2.6 Mb
We commonly think of ourselves as little and lost in the infinite stretches of time and space, so that it comes as a shock when the French poet Baudelaire speaks of “cradling our infinite on the finite seas.” Really? Is it ourself, our mind or spirit, that is infinity’s proper home? Or might the infinite be neither out there nor in here but only in language, a pretty conceit of poetry?
We are the language makers, and what we express always refers to something—though not, perhaps, to what we first thought it did. Talk of the infinite naturally belongs to that old, young, ageless conversation about number and shape which is mathematics: a conversation most of us overhear rather than partake in, put off by its haughty abstraction. Mathematics promises certainty—but at the cost, it seems, of passion. Its initiates speak of playfulness and freedom, but all we come up against in school are boredom and fear, wedged between iron rules memorized without reason.

Alan Jeffrey, "Mathematical and Analytical Techniques with Applications to Engineering"
Springer | ISBN: 0-387-23217-6 | 292 Pages | PDF | 3.4 Mb
The importance of mathematics in the study of problems arising from the real world, and the increasing success with which it has been used to model situations ranging from the purely deterministic to the stochastic, is well established. The purpose of the set of volumes to which the present one belongs is to make available authoritative, up to date, and self-contained accounts of some of the most important and useful of these analytical approaches and techniques. Each volume provides a detailed introduction to a specific subject area of current importance that is summarized below, and then goes beyond this by reviewing recent contributions, and so serving as a valuable reference source.

James E. Gentle, "Random Number Generation and Monte Carlo Methods"
Springer | ISBN: 0-387-21610-3 | 381 Pages | PDF | 2.9 Mb
The role of Monte Carlo methods and simulation in all of the sciences has increased in importance during the past several years. This edition incorporates discussion of many advances in the field of random number generation and Monte Carlo methods since the appearance of the first edition of this book.
These methods play a central role in the rapidly developing subdisciplines of the computational physical sciences, the computational life sciences, and the other computational sciences. The growing power of computers and the evolving simulation methodology have led to the recognition of computation as a third approach for advancing the natural sciences, together with theory and traditional experimentation. At the kernel of Monte Carlo simulation is random number generation.

Alfio Quarteroni, Riccardo Sacco, Fausto Saleri, "Numerical Mathematics"
Springer | ISBN: 0-387-98959-5 | 654 Pages | PDF | 3.6 Mb
Numerical mathematics is the branch of mathematics that proposes, develops, analyzes and applies methods from scientific computing to several fields including analysis, linear algebra, geometry, approximation theory, functional equations, optimization and differential equations. Other disciplines such as physics, the natural and biological sciences, engineering, and economics and the financial sciences frequently give rise to problems that need scientific computing for their solutions.
