This book integrates a historical and linguistic exploration of world English, documenting the emergence of the language as a contested site of linguistic encounters. It revises the understanding of English spread during the colonial period, emphasizing the agency of non-mother-tongue English speakers. The book contends that English owes its existence as a world language in large part to the struggle against imperialism but not to imperialism alone. To explain English varieties, the book introduces a new linguistic model of second language acquisition by speech communities: macroacquisition.
Ten chapters focus on the following:
(1) "Images of World English: Writing English as an International Language";
(2) "The Representation of the Social in a Social Science: Methodology in Linguistics";
(3) "Ideological and Economic Crosscurrents of Empire";
(4) "The Contested Terrain of Colonial Language Policy";
(5) "Access Denied: Containing the Spread of English";
(6) "The Becoming of a World Language";
(7) "Macroacquisition: Bilingual Speech Communities and Language Change";
(8) "The Macroacquisition of English: New Representations in the Language";
(9) "(The) World (of) English: Englishes in Convergence"; and
(10) "Decentering English Applied Linguistics."
(Contains approximately 400 references.) (SM)

In the early 5th century BC, after the fall of the Lydian Empire, the Persian Wars began. It was an ideological conflict which pitted a proud, democratic, freedom-loving people against a tyrannical and mighty empire. The stories of the many battles fought between the Greeks and the Persians are here splendidly brought to life by Jack Cassin-Scott, who details the tactics, organisation and uniforms of the armies of both sides in a volume featuring numerous illustrations and museum photographs, plus eight full page colour plates superbly drawn by the author himself.

Headway Video, Intermediate is the third level of an innovative English language teaching video series. It combines light-hearted drama with six factual reports to provide rich and varied learning material. The language syllabus is based on the New Headway English Course, Intermediate course book. The video can therefore be used as an additional component to the New Headway English Course, Intermediate or as supplementary material alongside other course books at intermediate level.
The activity book is in full colour and illustrated throughout. Each unit is divided into three sections. The 'Before You Watch' section aims to prepare students for the video. The 'While You Watch' section offers a global viewing task and then exploits the video sequence by sequence. The 'After You Watch' section offers optional activities in the form of role-plays, tasks and reading texts. There is also an active summary section of language used in the video. The activity book aims to develop listening and speaking skills. Students are encouraged to express their views on the characters featured in the drama and on issues raised in the reports. The activities draw on students' own experience and help them to gain insights into aspects of British culture. The activity book also contains a complete transcript of the video.

Headway Video, Beginner is the first level of an innovative English language teaching video series. It combines light-hearted drama within six units to provide rich and varied learning material. The language syllabus is based on the New Headway English Course, Beginner course book. The video can therefore be used as an additional component to the New Headway English Course, Beginner or as supplementary material alongside other course books at beginner level.
The activity book is in full colour in jpg form and is illustrated throughout. The activity book aims to develop listening and speaking skills. The activities draw on students' own experience and help them to gain insights into aspects of British culture. The activity book also contains a complete transcript of the video.
Contents:
1. Three Plus One
2. Home Movie
3. Do It Yourself
4. Surprise, Surprise!
5. A Night to Remember
6. Close Encounters
