A Guide to MATLAB Object-Oriented Programming is the first book to deliver broad coverage of the documented and undocumented object-oriented features of MATLAB??. Unlike the typical approach of other resources, this guide explains why each feature is important, demonstrates how each feature is used, and promotes an understanding of the interactions between features. Assuming an intermediate level of MATLAB programming knowledge, the book not only concentrates on MATLAB coding techniques but also discusses topics critical to general software development. It introduces fundamentals first before integrating these concepts into example applications. In the first section, the book discusses eight basic functions: constructor, subsref, subsasgn, display, struct, fieldnames, get, and set. Building on the previous section, it explores inheritance topics and presents the Class Wizard, a powerful MATLAB class generation tool. The final section delves into advanced strategies, including containers, static variables, and function fronts. With more than 20 years of experience designing and implementing object-oriented software, the expert author has developed an accessible and comprehensive book that aids readers in creating effective object-oriented software using MATLAB

The first edition set a standard of excellence that has eluded all followers, and I have recommended it to my clients for years. The new edition is a gift to the field and should be required reading for all managers. — Adrian J. Bowles, Ph.D., Vice President, Giga Information Group. One of the most readable introductions you will find. The new edition offers vital insights into the effective use of objects in business. — Chris Stone, President , Object Management Group. The first edition of Object Technology: A Manager's Guide is widely viewed as the classic introduction to this powerful computing concept. Object technology offers increased agility, significant time-to-market reduction, and the opportunity to exploit the potential of the World Wide Web by deploying globally distributed business systems. At a time when many of the world's largest companies are making the transition to object technology, David Taylor has updated his book to address the important issues facing the growth of object technology and to provide a glimpse into the future of this evolving paradigm. In updating this seminal work, David Taylor has retained the signature conciseness and clarity of discussion that made the first edition a best-seller. Object Technology: A Manager's Guide, Second Edition, covers the key terms, emerging concepts, and useful applications of objects. Managers, salespeople, engineers, software developers — anyone interested in understanding or implementing object technology — will find this a lucid introduction to the topic. Highlights of this new edition include: an explanation of how to use objects to create evolutionary software that rapidly adapts to changing business conditions, eliminating the need for most new application development; an introduction to Java, and an explanation of how its use of message interfaces enables a new generation of portable, mix-and-match, Internet-enabled business objects; an update on the state of object databases and extended relational databases, with guidelines for combining the two for optimal information storage; and an introduction to the new generation of object engines and how they combine storage and execution capabilities for maximum software integration.

There is no sorcery to implementing proper information security, and the concepts that are included in this fully updated second edition are not rocket science. Build a concrete foundation in network security by using this hands-on guide. Examine the threats and vulnerabilities of your organization and manage them appropriately. Includes new chapters on firewalls, wireless security, and desktop protection. Plus, plenty of up-to-date information on biometrics, Windows.NET Server, state laws, the U.S. Patriot Act, and more.
From Library Journal
All companies rely on some security mechanisms to ensure their corporate privacy and information integrity. In many cases, the ability of the technician to explain a system's vulnerabilities to managers in order to acquire funding is as important as the technical skills to build the system. This book addresses a wide range of topics, from security basics to policies, practices, and practical solutions. Though intended for network administrators, this also acts as a good primer on security concepts for the lay computer user. A rock-solid resource for all libraries.

Issues #1-6 of 6.
A Dame to Kill For is the second Sin City story, and the first Sin City story to have its own comic. It was written and drawn by Frank Miller. It was originally published by Dark Horse Comics between November 1993 and May 1994. It was edited by Jerry Prosser.
Summary
A Dame to Kill For is a prequel to The Hard Goodbye, as Marv is still alive, but about half-way through after Marv is last seen with Dwight, it is a midquel as some of the events that appear in The Hard Goodbye appear in the background of some parts.

Because of a shocking ending to the first Sin City book, many people wondered how successful Frank Miller could be with future tales of his no-holds-barred city noir. Enter Dwight McCarthy, a clean-living photographer who tries to avoid trouble because he knows what he's capable of. His tactics don't do him much good when a girl from his past (who he can't say no to) shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she's in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. What's going to happen? You guessed it: people get hurt. Read more...

"The disciplines of optical character recognition and document image analysis have a history of more than forty years. In the last decade, the importance and popularity of these areas have grown enormously. Surprisingly, however, the field is not well covered by any textbook. This book has been written by prominent leaders in the field. It includes all important topics in optical character recognition and document analysis, and is written in a very coherent and comprehensive style. This book satisfies an urgent need. It is a volume the community has been awaiting for a long time, and I can enthusiastically recommend it to everybody working in the area."

The book "Ship Knowledge - A Modern Encyclopedia" is basically the adapted and extended English language version of the very successful Dutch book "Scheepskennis" (published in 2001, author Klaas van Dokkum).
In a state-of-the-art lay-out the book's 16 chapters lead the reader in great detail through the multitude of facts related to ships, ship building and shipping. The parts and systems together forming a modern ship from design drafts up to the finished construction including paint systems and legal aspects, are extensively dealt with. The incorporation of clear and to the point drawings, cross-section drawings, system diagrams and many full-colour pictures and, especially its use of a lucid no nonsense style of English, make the book eminently readable for everybody with an interest in shipping. In actual fact the book may be termed as easy reading; leisure material.
The title "Ship Knowledge - A Modern Encyclopedia" well describes the contents of the book. Veritably this is a book that should be found on every true shipbuilder's bookshelf and thus be close at hand for daily use whenever necessary. Questions that crop up like "What is a reefer ship?", or "What was this thing called again? or "What type of systems do they have for that on board?" or "Which party is responsible for this, that or the other" can now be answered within a fraction of the time otherwise taken by asking colleagues, phoning out to "experts in the field" etc. Lots of colour pictures of ships Read more...

This textbook is written for advanced undegraduates or first year graduate students of mathematics and computer science. It is also intended for the working mathematician who wants to gain an appreciation of Mathematical Logic. There are no prerequisites for this book; however, some mathematical maturity is required. The book is written in a totally mathematical style, and any mathematician should feel at home reading this. The book starts with the definition of first order languages, proceeds through propositional logic, completeness theorems, and finally the two Incompleteness Theorems of Godel. In the process, the reader is also introduced to model theory and recursion Theory. After reading this book, the reader will be ready to branch into model Theory, recursion Theory, axiomatic set theory or even theoretical computer science.
Logic is a very profound subject, Godel's work being one the most remarkable discoveries in 20th-Century mathematics, having made an enormous impact on set theory, model theory as well as computer science. In spite of this impact, there exists a dearth of modern books which allow an aspiring mathematician to read and develop an appreciation for the subject. This book attempts to fill that gap by providing a short, distinctive, modern, and well-motivated introduction to mathematical logic. Read more...

This is the book to tell the intermediate-level amateur astronomer what he needs to know about observatories. It draws on the authors practical experience and that of many other experienced amateur astronomers.
It is an ideal complement to Patrick Moores More Small Astronomical Observatories which is a compendium of ideas for different observatory designs. Setting-up a Small Observatory covers the details of design, siting and construction once a basic type has been decided upon.
It is written in a way that is equally applicable to the USA and UK (where there are slightly different building regulations) and deals with matters that are basic to building and commissioning any amateur observatory. Uniquely, David Arditti also considers the aesthetics of amateur observatories fitting them in with family and neighbors, and maybe disguising them as more common garden buildings if necessary.
Every amateur astronomer who wants a purpose-built observatory (and that is most of them!) will find this book absolutely invaluable both during the planning and the construction stages.
About the Author
A physicist by training and specializing in materials science, David Arditti earns his living as a music writer and classical musician. He is a member of the British Astronomical Association and a committee member of the West of London Astronomical Society. He has written papers for the BAA Journal on the construction of small observatories. Read more...

The essays in this book are based on researches the author has undertaken on a wide range of topics, some using equipment no more elaborate than what one can find in an ordinary kitchen, others making elegant use of sophisticated experimental apparatus. Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not), or that appear to be well understood but turn out to be subtly devious. Written in an engagingly personal style, the essays will be of interest to students of physics and related disciplines as well as professional physicists. Though they deal with subtle concepts, the discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure. Silverman's researches deal with in quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, electromagnetism and optics, gravity, thermodynamics, and the physics of fluids, and these essays address .such questions as: How does one know that atomic electrons move? Would an "anti-atom" fall upward? How is it possible for randomly emitted particles to arrive at a detector preferentially in pairs? Can one influence electrons in London by not watching them in New York? Can a particle be influenced by a magnetic field through which it does not pass? A basketball is not changed by turning it once around its axis, but what about an electron? Can more light reflect from a su Read more...

* Accessible, yet comprehensive introduction to parsing techniques helps readers to quickly gain a broad understanding of subject
* Summarizes more than 700 papers referenced in the book, saving readers countless hours
* Many exercises include hints and partial solutions, making it ideal for self-study or classroom use
* Extensive bibliography, as well as annotated bibliography on the website, to help interested readers to find more information
Parsing, also referred to as syntax analysis, has been and continues to be an essential part of computer science and linguistics. Today, parsing is also applied in other disciplines; some examples are document preparation and conversion, chemical formulae typesetting, and chromosome recognition.
In addition to the traditional parsing techniques, this second edition presents new developments and discoveries: generalized deterministic parsing, linear-time substring parsing, parallel parsing, parsing as intersection, non-canonical methods, non-Chomsky systems, and many more.
Parsing techniques provide a solid basis for compiler construction and linguistics, and contribute to all existing software: they enable Web browsers to analyze HTML pages and PostScript printers to analyze PostScript, and some of the more advanced techniques are used in code generation in compilers and in data compression. Also their importance as general pattern recognizers is slowly being acknowledged.

This text is one of the first to treat vector calculus using differential forms in place of vector fields and other outdated techniques. Geared towards students taking courses in multivariable calculus, this innovative book aims to make the subject more readily understandable. Differential forms unify and simplify the subject of multivariable calculus, and students who learn the subject as it is presented in this book should come away with a better conceptual understanding of it than those who learn using conventional methods.
* Treats vector calculus using differential forms
* Presents a very concrete introduction to differential forms
* Develops Stokess theorem in an easily understandable way
* Gives well-supported, carefully stated, and thoroughly explained definitions and theorems.
* Provides glimpses of further topics to entice the interested student

Requiring only an understanding of differentiable manifolds, Isaac Chavel covers introductory ideas followed by a selection of more specialized topics in this second edition. He provides a clearer treatment of many topics, with new proofs of some theorems and a new chapter on the Riemannian geometry of surfaces. Among the classical topics shown in a new setting is isoperimetric inequalities in curved spaces. Completely new themes created by curvature include the classical Rauch comparison theorem and its consequences in geometry and topology, and the interaction of microscopic behavior of the geometry with the macroscopic structure of the space.
Review
"Each chapter concludes with an excellent section of notes and advanced exercises with further results, with hints and sketches of solutions at the end of the book...I think that it is the best reference on Riemannian geometry available, especially for someone interested in isoperimetric problems...Chavel is one of about a dozen mathematics books I keep at home for ready reference."

Kanji Power presents the level 1 and 2 joyo kanji, which Japanese kids learn in their first two years of school. Learning by frequency of occurence (such as with many of the kanji cards available) may be a better approach, depending on your goals. If you want to read children's books and the like, go with the joyo ordering -- you'll get furigana for higher-level kanji.
The presentation is fairly rote, like how it's taught in the schools, which will prove more effective for some than others. I personally need mnemonics and am interested in how the kanjis came to be, but I have Kanji Pictographix and Read Japanese Today for this purpose. Read more...
