TagsA Universe of Atoms An   [edit]

The essays in this book are based on researches the author has undertaken on a wide range of topics, some using equipment no more elaborate than what one can find in an ordinary kitchen, others making elegant use of sophisticated experimental apparatus. Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not), or that appear to be well understood but turn out to be subtly devious. Written in an engagingly personal style, the essays will be of interest to students of physics and related disciplines as well as professional physicists. Though they deal with subtle concepts, the discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure. Silverman's researches deal with in quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics, electromagnetism and optics, gravity, thermodynamics, and the physics of fluids, and these essays address .such questions as: How does one know that atomic electrons move? Would an "anti-atom" fall upward? How is it possible for randomly emitted particles to arrive at a detector preferentially in pairs? Can one influence electrons in London by not watching them in New York? Can a particle be influenced by a magnetic field through which it does not pass? A basketball is not changed by turning it once around its axis, but what about an electron? Can more light reflect from a su Read more...

TagsThe Renaissance An Encyclopedia for   [edit]

Note: Black-and-white figures and photos. Based on the Dartmouth Medal-winning Encyclopedia of the Renaissance (2000), this set has been prepared especially for non-specialists, focusing on the Renaissance-era topics most studied in high school world history, art, literature, economics and science curriculum. Organized alphabetically, this illustrated, full-color set includes entries on a range of topics, including: * Florence * Galileo * Heraldry * Humanism * Medici family * Opera * Piracy * Rhetoric * Shakespeare * Spanish Armada * Leonardo da Vinci * And many others Features include a master chronology with topical timelines; a bibliography with age-appropriate further reading sources and a comprehensive index. From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-This accessible, well-organized work is based on the Encyclopedia of the Renaissance(Scribners, 2000). The 465 alphabetically arranged entries, covering the years 1350-1620, include a broad spectrum of topics on concepts; individuals; movements; and discoveries in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Social history is also an emphasis and students will find information on censorship, religion, clothing, childhood, popular culture, love and marriage, and the role of women. The Protestant and Catholic Reformations are not a major focus. Reformation topics are considered in relation to their impact on the period. Numerous see-also references are included. Throughout the set, definitions of unfamiliar words, Read more...

TagsElementary Numerical Analysis An Algorithmic   [edit]

PREFACE This is the third edition of a book on elementary numerical analysis which is designed specifically for the needs of upper-division undergraduate students in engineering, mathematics, and science including, in particular, computer science. On the whole, the student who has had a solid college calculus sequence should have no difficulty following the material. Advanced mathematical concepts, such as norms and orthogonality, when they are used, are introduced carefully at a level suitable for undergraduate students and do not assume any previous knowledge. Some familiarity with matrices is assumed for the chapter on systems of equations and with differential equations for Chapters 8 and 9. This edition does contain some sections which require slightly more mathematical maturity than the previous edition. However, all such sections are marked with asterisks and all can be omitted by the instructor with no loss in continuity. This new edition contains a great deal of new material and significant changes to some of the older material. The chapters have been rearranged in what we believe is a more natural order. Polynomial interpolation (Chapter 2) now precedes even the chapter on the solution of nonlinear systems (Chapter 3) and is used subsequently for some of the material in all chapters. The treatment of Gauss elimination (Chapter 4) has been simplified. In addition, Chapter 4 now makes extensive use of Wilkinson's backward error analysis, and contains a survey of m Read more...

TagsUnderstanding The GPS An Introduction   [edit]

There is an ever-growing supply of information about the Global Positioning System. Unfortunately, these new (and now, some not so new) documents seem to be located at each end of the comprehension scale: either at the "gee-whiz" level which basically describes how interesting and useful this new utility is, or at the engineer's level which starts out with Keplerian orbits and Hopfield Modeling. What seems to be missing is a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, presentation of the Global Positioning System (GPS) for people who may have a very real need to apply this new technology but lack the basic understanding necessary to make important, and often expensive, decisions about it. Thus this book. This book is designed to support an introductory course on the fundamentals of the Global Positioning System based on a series of graphic representations and distilled concept-bullets. Math is scrupulously avoided-that level of information is readily available through numerous highly technical publications and is no more necessary for most users than is a textbook on electronics necessary for the purchaser of a television set. Each concept is presented in one to four graphics found in this book on the left page of each page-pair. The opposing right page presents a brief discussion of the concept. While much more could be said on each of the topics presented, only those highlights considered by the author to be of most immediate value to the geographer, project manager, field Read more...

TagsAn Introduction to Cryptography Second   [edit]

Continuing a bestselling tradition, An Introduction to Cryptography, Second Edition provides a solid foundation in cryptographic concepts that features all of the requisite background material on number theory and algorithmic complexity as well as a historical look at the field. With numerous additions and restructured material, this edition presents the ideas behind cryptography and the applications of the subject. The first chapter provides a thorough treatment of the mathematics necessary to understand cryptography, including number theory and complexity, while the second chapter discusses cryptographic fundamentals, such as ciphers, linear feedback shift registers, modes of operation, and attacks. The next several chapters discuss DES, AES, public-key cryptography, primality testing, and various factoring methods, from classical to elliptical curves. The final chapters are comprised of issues pertaining to the Internet, such as pretty good privacy (PGP), protocol layers, firewalls, and cookies, as well as applications, including login and network security, viruses, smart cards, and biometrics. The book concludes with appendices on mathematical data, computer arithmetic, the Rijndael S-Box, knapsack ciphers, the Silver-Pohlig-Hellman algorithm, the SHA-1 algorithm, radix-64 encoding, and quantum cryptography. New to the Second Edition: ? An introductory chapter that provides more information on mathematical facts and complexity theory ? Expanded and updated exercises sets, Read more...

TagsAmerican Religions An Illustrated History   [edit]

J. Gordon Melton, "American Religions: An Illustrated History"
Publisher: ABC-Clio | 2000 | 316 pages | CHM | English | 7.2 MB
American Religions: An Illustrated History is a brief summary of how we have arrived at this most interesting development in the human drama. The story begins at the end of the fifteenth century when Europeans discovered the continent and made their initial contacts with the more than 500 different peoples that inhabited it. There was already great diversity among the Native Americans, and the Europeans injected the different varieties of Christianity and Judaism. Here our story really begins and unfolds as the new settlers conquered the land, pushed aside its original inhabitants, and created a new society that we like to think of as the greatest nation on earth. Any account of the mosaic necessarily requires both a perspective and a considerable amount of interpretation.
